The fact this conversation still has to be a thing is soooo eyeeeerolling man. The death of the chubby cutesy impersonator of the old 2D Sonic aesthetic is not the death of 2D Sonic. And especially not the death of Sonic overall lmao. I'm telling you. I look at the Mario franchise in pure jealously at how their fans understand the basic concept of 2D and 3D branches for their o n e character. Its why Mario Wonder was as great of a game as it was. It didn't limit itself by ONLY acting like the Classic Mario games existed for once. Like the NSMB games. It did new things, while moving the franchise forward, and taking inspiration from across all of it. The problem with "Classic Sonic" is that he is A GIMMICK that is solely based around mimicking only the Genesis trilogy. Yes, they've added new stuff to the Classic games like the Drop Dash, and new characters ofc. But at some point, Sega and the Classic defense folks need to realize that Classic Sonic is inherently limiting... Because that's his entire point. A brand made for people who got pissy at literally anything about the franchise that existed past Sonic3&K. A brand that purposely ignored other 2D games like the Advance or Rush games, which actually TRIED to push the 2D Sonic formula forward with more ambitious level design and ideas. Its time to let it go y'all lol. I have nostalgia for Sonic's Classic Era myself... But you can't endlessly replicate over and over and over again. Mania was a great hail mary for it. I truly do not need another. Let's get a properly new 2D Sonic now.
Sonic Super stars sold more than 3 times as much as the highest selling Advance game. The sales of Advance 1-3, Rush, and Rush Adventure combined is less than Superstars' 3 million
A physics based platformer is not more limiting than a boost based platformer where every level plays the same but with a different palette. There are various platformers that have done pure physics platforming well it and it leads to more variety than boost Sonic games which basically means avoiding pits
In real life, businesses and corporations care about numbers and profit. Frontiers took 5 years to develop and sold 3 million. Highest selling and most expensive Sonic game in over 2 decades. Sonic Superstars, a bad low budget game sold 3 Million for no reason other than Classic Sonic is in it.
Sonic Frontiers released the same time as God of War Ragnarok and Frontiers still sold well. Classic Sonic is simply not as profitable as Modern Sonic.
Superstars failed due its mediocrity. But it sold 2.7 Million. Frontiers sold 3 million. Frontiers still helped Sega more than Unleashed while costing less budget
Classic sonic is a gimmick. Classic sonic gameplay isn't. I hope they don't act stupid and throw away the most iconic (and first, and most consistent, and most successful) sonic formula just like they did with the adventure formula after sonic 2006. It would be a net loss in the long run
The gameplay being copied & pasted from the 90s with no major changes/improvements is a gimmick. If SEGA made a remake of SA1/2 then I'd expect it to be gameplay accurate, but if they made a NEW Adventure game then I'd expect them to add new things to distinguish it from the orignal games.
@premydaremy that, I agree with. Mania didn't iterate in meaningful ways (minus the drop dash), and superstars failed to do so. But ignoring the opportunity of a true evolution in the future would be, in my opinion, a mistake
@@premydaremyBut Sonic Superstars isn't copy and pasted. It fails to have the level design Classic Sonic is known for. Here in the city, people of all ages. Even those under 10 are commonly playing a Classic Sonic game on a mobile device. Usually sounds like Sonic 2 which has 600 Million Iphone downloads by now. 500M on Android. People want a good game. Separate what casuals are saying to those that argue online. If you think of it, both Shadow Generations and Frontiers had fall off rates in player count faster than Dragon Age Veilguard. Sonic games are generally less popular than mainstream games known to fail. Sonic's popularity is covered by "media" more than games
@@premydaremyplus Sonic is Sonic like why are people treating Classic and Morden like two different characters like it’s the same fucking character. Like that would be like if Naruto fans compared OG Naruto to Shippuden Naruto like there two different characters 🤦 So in reality, classic Sonic or we’ll Sonic back in the 90s isnt exactly dying since oh idk he *GREW UP*
I think is funny how some think sega executives have a bias against classic sonic, executives only care about numbers, nothing else matters to them edit: Guys i need you to back up your data, aside from an ambiguous total franchise sales numbers there's no word on how much did superstar sold, only sega claiming it did not meet expectations
Numbers matter in real life. Sonic Superstars plain and simply isn't a good game. But Sonic 2 mobile is continiously the most actively played widely available Sonic game.
And numbers make Superstars the second best seller. Right behind Sonic Frontiers. This justifies Sega's reason to use Classic more. And I dont even like Superstars. But your logic is against you
@@HyperSuperSonic-i1fThose are sales for the franchise in general and not just for Superstars. The truth is that Superstars didn't even reach 1 million sales, so it's a failure, stop spreading misinformation on the internet
The whole classic sonic/ Modern Sonic divide is one of the dumbest things they every could’ve done, it just serves to further divide the playerbase when at the end of the day Sonic games sell based on how good they are and not the specific style.
Apart of me actually kind of likes the devide since I think it be interesting in another universe were he never changes similar to like Charly brown or whatever, but i kinda agree on that tho like honestly it's mainly just how fans can be
Classic Sonic is a physics based platformer. Modern is more of a racing platformer. An audience exists for both types. Its Sega who doesnt do things right
Dude, that's what I've been saying for years. Literally the only reason that they made Sonic's older design an entirely separate character from the current design was to appease all of the whiners who complained about Sonic's eye colour in Sonic 4. Either that or it was one heck of a coincidence. Don't get me wrong, I liked both Mania and Superstars. They were fun and playable Sonic games. It was just a little disappointing that you would never get popular characters like Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze or Silver in them. And why? "Cos they got coloured irises!" It's so ridiculous. People can deny it all they want, but it is literally all down to the eye colour at this point. Then they introduce Trip, a brand NEW character, who they market as a Classic character. So what exactly makes her a Classic character? You guessed it! No coloured irises! Some fans would love to see an updated, Modern version of Trip, with a proper voice and everything, but tell that to these Classic purists who fully support the Classic/Modern divide and they go absolutely nuts. Recommend a traditional 2D Sonic game, but one that features the characters in their Modern designs, and people just can't get their heads around it. "But what about Classic Sonic? You can't just get rid of Classic Sonic! Where did Classic Sonic go?" He didn't go anywhere. He's right there! He just has green eyes and can talk. Sonic IS Sonic.
@@quickup7530 Sega are perfectly capable of making a physics based Sonic platformer that features the characters in their Modern designs, they're just too afraid to after the rigamarole of Sonic 4.
@@bowmaj8666Sega isnt very good at making games. Sorry to be blunt to you. Modern/Classic is far from a priority discussion in real life. These games are just not good. As for the classic/modern divide, MOST super hero characters have a divide/multiverse variation. This isn't a talking point outside internet communities
@@Ibalistic_hedge I think he's saying that there should be no "modern" or "classic" Sonic, just Sonic. Like how it was before Sonic Generations, classic sonic wasn't known as classic sonic, he was just Sonic.
It could work but it's very hard to execute and get right. What I mean by that is that a story could be crafted where events happen in the past and present. Or rather, there's something going on in the present, and Sonic remembers encountering something similar in the past. Basically keeping Classic Sonic as "flashbacks" when Sonic recalls something. And in the end, we either get a dual final boss where we switch back and forth between past and present, or we get one single final boss in the present. But definitely do not make Modern and Classic Sonic interact anymore. It's done, it only worked and made sense in Generations.
The thing that I feel like people don't understand or forgot is that modern sonic is classic sonic from the future. Classic was never supposed to be a separate character after sonic generations because he was only used to show how far we've come. Modern can literally do EVERYTHING classic can do but with added mechanics. So i'm sorry to say this, but there is no other use for classic sonic except for nostalgia. Heck i bet if sonic 4 did well that fact would've been proven a long time ago
Speaking of Sonic 4 some people even prefer that to Superstars, unironically, Mania has raised a very high bar, so for Superstars to be comparable to Sonic 4 at all says a lot about its quality.
They failed at leaving Classic behind in the 2010s since that decade was all about 90s nostalgia, Superstars is gonna stick out like a sore thumb of the 2020s and just kinda awkwardly exist among the other games.
To this day, I still believe that Classic Sonic truly works best in small doses. A variation of Sonic should only really used for SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES to celebrate the franchise’s history. Which is why I think Generations and Mania were so effective for fans (outside of just being good games). I’m not saying Classic Sonic should be erased altogether, but I do think Modern Sonic should be the main 90% focus for the games. I mean if we REALLY need another 2D game, why not try another 2D Modern Sonic game like the Advance or Rush series. And don’t give me that “A Modern 2D game won’t sell well!” Sure the Rush and Advance games weren’t big hitters, but they were restricted to handhelds so you can really blame them. And yes, Sonic 4 exists, but that shouldn’t be the be all end all. If 3D games bounced back after 06 and Forces, I don’t see why we can’t bounce back after Sonic 4
@@quickup7530 what platformer on DS was out here selling 10+ mil outside of New Mario Bros Cuz the Mega Man ZX series and those Crash games sure wasn’t
The beauty of Classic Sonic lies in its pixel graphics, and Classic Sonic with good graphics is nothing more than a degradation of Modern Sonic. This is something I have always thought, but SEGA doesn't seem to understand it for many years.
Eeeh idk if it's just pixel art, sonic cd opening was designed off being high quality and it's highly seen as one of the best interpretations of sonic ever, I think it's mostly just stylization n all
The Sonic Advance games have some of the best pixel models in any Sonic game. But apparently these games "don't count" because they feature Modern Sonic instead of Classic Sonic.
It’s not just the Genesis/Mega Drive-style pixel art that seperates Classic from Modern. It’s not just the gameplay. There’s also the art style used on the sprites or models, the general feel of the presentation and the style of music used in the soundtrack, as well. Classic Sonic OSTs rely heavily on 90s pop, dance and funk elements, the Adventure era is rock-heavy, while the Boost era is more orchestral. It’s impossible to undo the seperation at this point without alienating those who see Classic Sonic more than just 2D Sonic (including me). In my opinion, if you put Modern Sonic into a 2D game, with all the stylistic choices that come with it, it’s not a Classic game anymore, it’s a 2D Modern game now (yes, call me a heretic for considering the Advance series as part of the Adventure era, and as we know it, Sonic Rush was actually the very first Boost game).
@@bowmaj8666 The presentation also skews towards the art style of the Adventure games and the style of the music also feels more like the Adventure games. In my opinion, this is why the Advance series is not Classic Sonic, but rather 2D Adventure Sonic.
@@commentarysheep I'm still not entirely sure what the issue is here. It's like if Sega made a brand new 2D Sonic game, and the fan base is all like "Ok, let's see. 2D gameplay, momentum based physics, Genesis style graphics and music. This seems like a fantastic ga.... oh wait, Sonic's got green eyes in it, COMPLETELY RUINED!!!" That kind of petty attitude is what got us here in the first place. If Sega wants to make a 2D game with the traditional momentum based physics and include a character like Shadow or Silver in it, then they should totally do that. A bunch of whiners on the internet shouldn't be the ones dictating what a Sonic game can and can't be.
Why tie different gameplay styles to different sonics? Why not have 1 sonic with 3d modern gameplay and 2d classic gameplay. Just style them differently depending on the game. Making 2 separate sonics is entirely unnecessary
I think it was mainly done to make the player more likely to be engaged, either liking one of them better or just liking both styles, and at the time they didn't know how to connect the two together well and especially after 06 they wanted to just stay away from 3d classic kind of games
It’s not just gameplay. Classic Sonic has an art direction, soundtrack style and way of storytelling that is radically different from Modern Sonic. Some people just like that aesthetic more and start preferring the aesthetics of either Classic or Modern games.
@@commentarysheep You're not describing classic sonic though, you're describing 2D style gameplay for Sonic. Sonic Advance did what you're saying. There's of course stuff that are done better in the classic games S1-3K but that's not classic Sonic.
They need to get rid of Classic Sonic and never use him again. He was in Sonic Forces witch is regarded as a bad game, then Sonic Superstars witch we now see was a disappointment, and in Sonic X Shadow Generations he was overshadowed by Sonic and Shadow. 3D sonic is much better than 2D and its time to leave the 1990s in the past and embrace the future with only using Modern Sonic.
They are willing to bring Infinite into the forefront because he makes sense to be the present soldier of Solaris with Mephiles being the past and Iblis being the future.
Classic Sonic could've been successful if we were given a hand drawn Classic Sonic Game reminiscent of Sonic CD. Classic Sonic could've been successful if we were given Sonic Mania 2. Classic Sonic would've been successful if the character himself wasn't a lame light blue "cute" inferior to his much cooler modern counterpart. Lowkey Sega should hire me, because all of my ideas for Sonic are correct ngl 😈🙏🏾
I thino suepr stars tried to be a mania 2 and in some ways succeeded but not all of course, the thing of classic sonic being cute i think has kinda always been the plot in some way tho of recent it has went more for a cute look for classic sonic which I think it should be more even with modern, but I also kind of get it if we see the two as the same sonic but of different ages
Personally, I don't REALLY mind him, I just hate that he's the only 2D we're allowed to have nowadays, despite all the advancements the Advance and Rush games made. I've been recently playing Sonic Advance 3 on my GBA, and then played Mania on my switch... And I've been having more fun with Advance 3 than Mania. It makes me fairly annoyed that Mania is the far newer game 😂😂
Super Stars wasn’t the outcome compared to what they delivered meaning they thought the GP was going to be okay with the false advertisement of decently playable co-op (Like Mario Wonder) and running into enemies everything 2 seconds (Sonic Advance 2) and drawn out bosses without a decent checkpoint system (Sonic Heroes). Despite the reception, the game allegedly sold over 3 million copies which we Sonic games tend NOT to sell so it did something.
@@XTHHedgehogi mean it still had alot of things over advanced 3, the level design is better definitely and no I'm not saying cuz most of it is not original but even still the new levels are just top tier level design, I like modern but the last time we got him was in multiple games called 4 which they didn't even ever finish the story of
Classic Sonic cannot go- it's their best play style that they currently use. Legitimately, if Classic Sonic goes, than an entire chunk of the fandom will be erased.
All they need to do is make more Sonic Advance or Sonic 4 like games where the gameplay is based off the Genesis games (but ya know, actually having accurate physics) but simply make the art design and character designs modern.
I hope they at least bring Trip and Fang into the Modern era. Trip was a cool character and think would work better as a Modern Sonic character with her being able to become a Dragon and all. Fang, well, that's an obvious pick because he's a fan favorite, but then Mighty and Ray were shoved into only being in the Classic Sonic stuff despite the comics, so who even knows anymore?
If anything we should have gotten a new art style by now instead of sticking with the Unleashed style designs for over 15 years now, that would be the cleanest way to break away from this Classic Sonic/Modern Sonic seperation
I agree, but don't forget, this is the fan base that absolutely lost their minds because of Sonic's eye colour in Sonic 4. Despite the fact that he's had that eye colour since, what, 1997? And it wasn't just something as simple as "oh I just prefer his older design over his newer one." It was more "WAAAH, THE ENTIRE GAME IS RUINED! I DON'T LIKE THAT STINKY GREEN EYED SONIC! WHERE'S MY SONIC? GIVE ME MY SONIC OR I'M NEVER PLAYING ANOTHER SONIC GAME EVER AGAIN, REEEEEE!" You can tell that Sega have been treading lightly for over a decade because of whiners like this.
Worst case scenario, Classic Sonic exclusive characters like Mighty, Ray, Trip, and Fang stay lost in the past forever. Best case scenario, at least some of them finally get introduced to the Modern Era and maybe even become main characters.
@@MikeSpruce This is what I've been saying for years. The original 2D Sonic gameplay with momentum based physics is arguably the best Sonic gameplay formula. All that this Classic/Modern divide is doing is making it so that popular characters like Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze or Silver simply can't be in these types of games. And why? Because they weren't created between 1991 and 1996? Because they speak? Because only characters with Black irises can be in those games? It just sounds so ridiculous and petty. Likewise, you've got popular characters like Mighty, Ray, and Fang who haven't yet appeared in a Modern game. Plenty of long time fans would love to see these characters getting updated designs and voices. But thanks to this divide, it's likely never going to happen. I don't know if it's true or not, but there was a rumour that a fan asked one of the higher ups at Sega (at a convention or something) whether we'd be seeing a Modern version of Mighty, and they said that he was exclusively a Classic character. Like, who is this for? Other than whiney fan boys who hate "that ugly, stretched out green eyed Sonic!" Then there's this new character, Trip. She's a brand new character who's being marketed as a Classic character. What makes her a Classic character? Is it truly the eye colour and the fact that she doesn't talk? That's literally all this is to these people who encourage this divide. And if Sega lets these people ultimately dictate what can and can't be in certain Sonic games, then we're just going to be left with a bunch of stagnant characters who never go beyond these 2D throwback games. And strangely enough, people do want that, they just want them to be separate from the Modern games. Sega could literally make a brand new 3D Sonic game that features Classic Sonic, and I guarantee you that these Classic purists will start going "oh, but this is totally different to those other 3D Sonic games! Classic Sonic in 3D is a million, billion, squillion times more betterer than stinky Modern Sonic!" They just can't let this mere older character design go.
Great video prem, it’s high time people realize this classic thing never should’ve even gone past gens in the first place, I mean mania was great but superstars seriously dropped the ball, and aside from that what really annoys me is people defending classic sonic saying those of us who are critical of it just don’t like the character design, while I do prefer the modern designs over the classic designs it’s much more than just the look, it’s the limitations and the game design philosophy, for example you can’t add air tricks or the humming top (advance 2&3) in a “new” classic game cause it was never in the classics, even though those kind of innovations add a lot to the gameplay and should be staples of 2D and even 3D sonic, hopefully sega finally gets it together next time and does a proper modern 2D game that takes the classic physics but add modern mechanics to it and evolves the gameplay beyond the 90s
The whole treating Classic like his own character was a huge mistake and only served to divide the community even further imo. Classic and Modern shouldn’t be treated like Mega Man and X (two similar characters with their own gameplay styles) but rather Jumpman and Mario: the same character but with advancements to build on. It’s a shame that mobile game masquerading as Sonic 4 made people think that a 2D Modern Sonic game wouldn’t work because we’ve seen that the formula can advance (pun intended) and Superstars did have some modern elements seeping through the cracks like rail grinding and new playable characters but I hope going forward Sega will stop trying to handicap themselves and just make a game that feels like a proper next step for Sonic as a whole
And to that one guy who keeps saying Superstars sold $3 million as a gatcha: 1) evidently that’s not the numbers Sega thought it would be considering this whole thing is “Superstars was a disappointment.” Just because a game looks like it sold a lot on paper, doesn’t mean it underperforms despite what people think of the game. Just ask Square Enix fans this current decade so far. 2) Sonic Heroes sold $4 million and Secret Rings also sold $3 million and Sega left both of those games in the dust. Heck, they considered 06 a financial success ($2.69 million fyi) considering it got a Greatest Hits release on 360 but that didn’t stop people from treating the game like its pure evil and making Sega abandon the Adventure formula
Hopefully this "Classic" and "Modern" split ends now and it returns to simply being just "Sonic". It should be treated as an artstyle for the same character like it was in the late 90s-2000s.
This was entirely their fault. It was their fault for keeping Classic Sonic as entirely "nostalgia" rather than simply a design or artstyle difference. It was their fault for making the Mania devs bring back old levels rather than having entirely new levels like they wanted to do, it was their fault for putting Classic Sonic in Forces despite not needing to be in their at all and still reusing Green Hill and Chemical Plant, and it was their fault for Superstars turning out the way it did with the falling out with Evening Star and not allowing the game to go further past Sonic staple environments and mechanics.
Superstars would’ve been fine if it released in place of Sonic 4 back in 2010 with it wearing the title of that game Sonic the Hedgehog 4 or even releasing after Episode 2 as the Episode 3 we never got And I absolutely agree Classic Sonic is just a gimmick that they refused to let go of even when he played the worst in Forces. Forces should’ve been Classic Sonic’s last game, we could’ve left him in the 2010s since the entirety of that Decade was just 90s nostalgia. Take Megaman 11 for example, a 2018 game where they added the double gear system as the new main gimmick, they took a risk there but some people ended up liking it, even when the X series exists as an evolution of Megaman.
Exactly this. What Capcom did with Mega Man in the 2010s was EXACTLY what Sega ended up doing with Classic Sonic since Generations. Even using the same concept of member berries for each (ie Member Mega Man 2? Member US Box Art Mega Man 1?) and the fact it took Mega Man 11 to feel like a proper evolution of Classic Mega Man after 9 and 10 were handicapped to make it a copy of Mega Man 2. I was kinda hyped when I heard the leaks of a new 2D Sonic because I wanted to see an evolution like they did with Advance and Rush but nope. We couldn’t even have a freakin proper Shadow costume because “it wasn’t in the Genesis games” despite having other elements from the modern era like rail grinding in the game. That’s like saying Mario Wonder is going back to the basics of the NES games by not having extra moves and characters outside of the bros. I am glad with how SxSG has been marketing that Sega seems to have realized to chill with the Classic pandering and hopefully we can move forward with the confidence of a unified brand but I guess we’ll have to wait and see
@@redstreak9430 Speaking of Megaman 9 and 10 I actually prefer Street Fighter X Megaman over both of those, I NEVER liked how they removed charging and sliding, imagine if in Sonic Mania they reverted Sonic back to (Sonic 1 Sonic) where the only way to spindash is to run and press down, no insta-shield or drop dash either.
@ exactly. At least with Sonic Mania, it felt like it built off the initial games and introduced new moves to go with it. SFxMM basically did the same thing, with it being based on NES games in general and not specifically Mega Man 2 for the reasons you mentioned
Modern-styled 2D Sonic games have been way more inconsistent though. There's only a few of them I could name that are still generally positively received by the community and those are Advance 1, Rush, and Colors DS.
*ATTENTION:* Stop believing in misinformation and fake news, there are a bunch of idiots in the comments saying that Superstars sold more than 2 million and this *IS A LIE* , Sega never released the sales numbers for Superstars and this is all based on a misinterpretation, that reddit post showed the sales of the franchise in general AND NOT JUST SUPERSTARS. Use a little rationality, every game that surpassed 1 million Sega released the numbers, because for them it is considered a success, but Sega always omitted the Superstars ones, it doesn't make sense that a game that sold +2 million is considered a failure and Shadow Gens that sold 1.5 million, or Mania that sold only 1 is considered a success. THINK IMBECILES, THINK
I still wish Mania 2 was a thing... but I don't like this idea that Classic Sonic isn't allowed to do anything new. Classic Sonic is also the reason why Modern isn't allowed to have 2D games anymore.
The next time i want to see Classic Sonic is if SEGA/SonicTeam did a proper remake of the classic Sonic games. Remember Sonic 2 HD? The fan remake of Sonic 2? Ye, THAT should be how they remade the classic Sonic games
I see what you mean, if Sega never stops portraying classic as a cute bootleg version with no edge or innovation, then yeah get him tf out of here, I never wanna see him again. But I know they can do better. I want classic pushed to it's limits with the Saturn/Calendar designs, hell they could even finally make X-treme. But classic stuff has to be treated like a grand event, like Mania or Gens. Not a regular saturday like Superstars was
10:18 Look at Prince of Persia The Lost Crown; one of the best games of 2020, critically acclaimed, and nominated for best action/adventure game, but it sold terribly, and that’s why Ubisoft is slacking on PoP and instead pumping out slop.
Sadly the lesson for these situations tends to be “X thing had disappointing sales, thus, x thing is a poor choice to go forward with.” Rather than considering, *why* is achieved less success than [the developers or company] anticipated. Surely, it has nothing to do with: - the high release price - game competition - unpolished coop gimmick There are other factors, but, tbh those are a lot more focussed on individual preferences…
I wanna ask you this prem. If they brought back classic sonic agian but this time changed his design to look more like his toei self and added multiple New stuff to the classic formula (like combat, rail grinding, ect) wolud you like that? Or would you be upset cuz it's not modren sonic being used.
If they added new mechanics then there's no point in using the Classic model other than nostalgia. That being said, if the game was a masterpiece then I'd still love it, but I'd just slap on a Modern Sonic mod when playing it.
Absolute truth! Sonic worked in the 90’s because he was fresh and cool at the time and they kept evolving it. Things only work if they evolve and get better and try new things, which is why “classic” fails. Oh and maybe because he’s the wrong colour pallet and mechanics don’t feel the same unlike mania too but PLEASE let classic be done and just do better modern
Superstars suffered from bad corporate & game design choices. SEGA will act like it's the brand of gameplay that's the issue though. It's like they broke the legs of someone & then blamed the victim for not being able to stand up.
Honestly it’s SEGA’s fault for rushing out yet another game. They always shoot themselves in the foot then wonder why shit doesn’t sell! They should’ve doubled down on the multiplayer aspect of the game, like why the fuck is the post game (Trip’s Story) a ONE Player experience!? Could’ve just thrown in the Classic Chaotix so we could at least have another 4-player experience with different characters post game. I also think it’s dumb that the bosses aren’t centered around the Emerald powers, would’ve been creative at the very least. They should drop a Superstars Plus addressing all these issues but ik I’m just coping atp.
Honestly whats sad to me is they have a chance to really modernize classic sonic and make it better and do things that classic sonic couldn't do back then. Like actual voice acting or animated cutscene transitions and even secret stages and a world map that has secrets. We have seen more things done in sonic generations than sonic superstars. make the $60 actually feel worth it. But they wont do all of that because thats money
@@nazomius7033 so we’re gonna pretend Sand Sanctuary, Golden Capital Act 2, Cyber Space, and both versions of the Egg Fortress boss fights don’t exist?
If you ask me, Classic Sonic is so limiting to the series. Classic Characters arent allowed to talk or have any character development. Modern Characters arent allowed to appear in 2D games. Its better if Sega just says its simply a different art direction
Honestly, at this point the best thing classic sonic can do is just be apart of a sonic maker game, so that it's a *Choice* because any *real* innovation could literally just be an advance series. A lot of fan games do try to innovate on the series but tbh besides the gameplay experience being good there isn't really a point to play something like before or after the sequel unless you really like classic.
If they use the elements of the original 2d Sonic games that made the games great (momentum based physics, multiple routes, elemental shields) and put them into a 3d modern Sonic game, it would be a lot better than releasing an outdated play style with modernised graphics.
Classic Sonic is here to stay. They just introduced a new character with the ability to turn into a dragon with 7 Chaos Emeralds. A new character in the canon. The Classic Era is not day. It is the way that Sega approached new Classic Sonic games that ks controversial. Like the price tiers in Sonic Origins and the bugs and glitches they had to face after release.
So by his logic, if we get the return of the Adventure formula, it won’t work because it’s only nostalgia. Definitely he has it out for Classic Sonic, and it seems like he even hates Mania, which is infinitely better than Superstars. And even though Generations Classic Sonic isn’t like Genesis Classic Sonic, he’s still fun in his own way, and there’s a stupid, unnecessary bias against him. I’m not being a Classic Sonic fanboy, but if they bring back a gameplay style that was fun in a previous installment, I’m not going to have a weird, dumb prejudice against it. If Christian Whitehead returns to make a sequel to Sonic Mania, or if they make a Generations sequel and bring back Generations Classic Sonic with his gameplay style, I’d be happy. As long as the gameplay design from Superstars and Forces doesn’t come back, then it’s fine.
@@Ibalistic_hedgeIt released around the time Spider man 2 & Mario wonder released so the competition was HEAVY it didn’t really stand much of a chance if I’m being honest
Superstars sold better than mania and it was better than lost world colour utimate and forces, sega was expecting frontier numbers , also superstar was clearly rushed and didn't have the style of classic sonic games nor the music
I imagine only one future Classic Sonic game: Sonic X Metal Mania. It would be a remaster adding Amy, online versus, normal 2P coop, and few QOL changes like adding ERZ to the level select in Sonic’s save. Metal Mania would be the additional smaller game based like Shadow Generations. Metal Mania would take place after losing in Stardust Speedway in which he’s taken to the Egg Reverie. From this he meets Infinite in the Egg Reverie who plans his revenge against Eggman after his loss in forces. Metal Mania would use a hub world in the Egg Reverie and access stages from there. Metal Mania would use the Adventure games formula where it’s 3D platforming and Metal Sonic would be able to unlock abilities like Black Shield and the Light Speed Dash. His stages would be 3d takes on stages from his past and later Sonic games including Stardust Speedway, Death Egg, Cyber Station, Mad Gear, Final Egg, Egg Fleet, Tropical Resort, and Metropolitan Highway.
Here's how I see things The late 2000s and pretty much the whole 2010s were when Classic Sonic needed to return because Sega had alienated the franchise from its roots far too much, trying out a bunch of things that fans just weren't into. Generations was a renaissance for Sonic followed up by Lost World and Boom that were absolute disasters. But Sega thought that the solution was to pander to nostalgia, so they kept going with the Classic style, hoping to win fans back. And to be fair, Mania did exactly what Sega hoped for, and it was a huge hit, but alongside it, Forces was a boring dumpster fire and Classic Sonic couldn't save it, in fact I'd reckon he made it worse. They tried to catch lightning in a bottle and recreate Generations but with a more serious story behind it, and it failed. So they scrapped that and gave one more try with Classic Sonic in the form of Superstars. Now, personally I really liked Superstars, but objectively speaking it failed, and most people don't like it. I think we might be seeing the end of the "nostalgia train" in Sonic games. Sega kept pandering to nostalgia and was met with negative opinions for it, and Supertars was perhaps the final nail in the coffin. We might even stop seeing Green Hill, Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary be re-used over and over again in games moving forward, we might go back to new, original and (hopefully) well designed stages. Regardless, I do believe that the next era of Sonic is about to start right now. Idk what Sega's next move is, if it's a Heroes Remake, or Frontiers 2 (or both). The racing game they just announced is just a spin-off game to keep fans busy while they cook, and hopefully make some money that can be used to budget the next mainline game, but depending on what the next mainline game will be and what the overall direction is in terms of tone and gameplay, I feel like we're definitely entering the next era of Sonic right now.
I'm going to be real I feel like most people were in the situation of "only having enough for one so I have to make the right choice" and I feel like a large majority of people went with mario wonder
I don't mind having Neo Classic Sonic exist in general in the same way I don't mind Movie Sonic existing. The issue is when he being treated equal to Main Sonic in the games. He should be a skin or side character. He needs to have the same importance as Charmy Bee not Tails lol
Sega's decisions are disappointments. Like, oh, I dunno... releasing the same WEEK as Mario, for one thing. Sonic Superstars itself wasn't a disappointment. It was just mismanaged and poorly handled just like pretty much everything else relating to Sonic that Sega does.
I personally can make do with or without Classic Sonic, though I think that Sonic Team handled Classic Sonic as nothing more than a gimmick while not bothering to find ways to do something new or creative with Classic Sonic. Classic Sonic is nothing more than a tool used for nostalgia while also causing the series to become stagnant. Superstars at least tried to do something new by introducing the emerald power-ups, but still fell short because of clunky execution. Clearly, Frontiers and its open-zone gameplay is more popular across the globe, so that's fine by me. I just want the series to continue advancing and doing new things after so many years of obnoxious nostalgia pandering.
increndibly funny to me that we actually got a new sonic game with oshima's involvement that really does capture the essence of the series with its setting, characters and story and then it fails in comparison to other games that are inherently not sonic
Although I do prefer Sonic during his Genesis days much more than his post Adventure-Era self, I kinda see where this is coming from. Like, Sega has been using him quite a lot, and the ways that they do use him rub off as nostalgia bait. With Sonic Mania it was completely fine, as it was a good game, and it handled what made the games so good to begin with perfectly. Also I can't believe I'm saying it, but it's also fine with Forces, as after beating Sonic mania as Sonic and getting the "true" ending, the phantom ruby sent him to the future, which, while Sonic Forces was an okay game(There are worse Sonic Games, hear me out), it was a good way to explain Sonic disappearing at the end of Mania like that. With Superstars, it is more notable that they're trying to use him more.. Not necessarily a bad thing, but the game itself was kinda ass in my opinion(I enjoyed Forces more somehow)
If this is what they want to do, then whatever, it isn't my business. Though personally, I think we need to agree to disagree on the whole debate on whether or not Classic Sonic is own character. Yes, if I'm being real, Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic are the same person. This whole past self thing had already been done before so it was nothing new. Mario and Luigi met their past selves in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, and Baby Mario and Baby Luigi are pretty much standard "characters" in spin-offs now. If I were to meet my past self, yes, it would be the same person, but my personality and interests have changed, so, in a slight way, it would kind of be a separate entity. Only through growth and time though.
i think the problem is that while modern sonic games are trying new things and getting creative classic sonic games keep pretty much the same gameplay and gimicks with nothing rlly new to bring to the table i think its also due to how theres nothing to be interested in unless you like a classic sonic fan specifically like regular gamers to them it just looks like another classic sonic game and unless they like those games they wont buy i think things like new gimmicks or new style or just something that makes these games stand out will make it more interesting pp love classic sonic and his gameplay style and storytelling and his world and some prefer it over modern sonic so to me this feels like a loss
Maybe...just maybe...They can go in a Sonic Advance direction where classic type gameplay is fun, has modern designs, and new gameplay features. They're not going to do that though
@lemon5000-tj6nv 💯! And if the fans can do it, then what's segas excuse? That sonic ova tech demo looked phenomenal! & Streets of rage 4 received the hand drawn treatment, I just don't get why they don't do that with classic sonic moving on because classic sonic has a place, it's just not in 2.5D
Was always best to keep the two playstyles separate. Keep Sonic Mania / CD Sonic as a separate game and Adventure Sonic as a separate 3D Sonic game. Sonic Generations got away with it back then. Now there's nothing new.
Well said
Sonic Superstars sold 3 Million. A feat just Sonic Frontiers accomplished. And thats despite its bad reputation
Releasing around the same time as Mario Wonder and Spiderman was a huge mistake
Yeah that’s what the killed the game for me. I feel like Sonic SuperStars was doomed to fail. Honestly especially with Mario Wonder.
Sonic Frontiers released the same time as God of War Ragnarok and Frontiers still sold well. Classic Sonic is simply not as profitable as Modern Sonic.
60 dollars and no quality assurance was the problem
@@electricion712Sonic Superstars still sold 3 million despite being a bad game.

They used Mania formula.
Also, they just wanted to make an original title - Penny's Big Breakaway. Good game.

People want a good game. Separate what casuals are saying to those that argue online. If you think of it, both Shadow Generations and Frontiers had fall off rates in player count faster than Dragon Age Veilguard. Sonic games are generally less popular than mainstream games known to fail.

edit: Guys i need you to back up your data, aside from an ambiguous total franchise sales numbers there's no word on how much did superstar sold, only sega claiming it did not meet expectations
Numbers matter in real life. Sonic Superstars plain and simply isn't a good game. But Sonic 2 mobile is continiously the most actively played widely available Sonic game.
Superstars sold 3 million. Almost as much as Frontiers. Sega wanted more
You do realize that only Sonic Frontiers sold more than Superstars right?
And numbers make Superstars the second best seller. Right behind Sonic Frontiers. This justifies Sega's reason to use Classic more. And I dont even like Superstars. But your logic is against you
@@HyperSuperSonic-i1fThose are sales for the franchise in general and not just for Superstars. The truth is that Superstars didn't even reach 1 million sales, so it's a failure, stop spreading misinformation on the internet

Scrap that! I hope we just have “Sonic” ONLY
@@prodmeizosonic only? That doesn’t make sense.
It's about time Sega finally realized they can't just poorly milk classic sonic. They're like, 4 years late on that.
Because people want good games. Sonic 2 sold best. Then Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Sonic CD sold the least. And Game Gear Sonic games barely sold.
They failed at leaving Classic behind in the 2010s since that decade was all about 90s nostalgia, Superstars is gonna stick out like a sore thumb of the 2020s and just kinda awkwardly exist among the other games.
I didn't think the game was a disappointment.
Because those 2D games dont sell.
Sonic Rush and Advance were restricted to handhelds where platformers sold 10+ million. So please stop.

I agree. Sonic Advance did exactly that.
I mean…. If this is incentive enough to delete Classic Sonic from existence, then by that logic, Modern Sonic should’ve been erased YEARS ago.

WHERE'S MY SONIC? GIVE ME MY SONIC OR I'M NEVER PLAYING ANOTHER SONIC GAME EVER AGAIN, REEEEEE!"
You can tell that Sega have been treading lightly for over a decade because of whiners like this.
Maybe they should have just made Superstars a cheap but good game like Mania was, and it wouldn't have been a disappointment
Worst case scenario, Classic Sonic exclusive characters like Mighty, Ray, Trip, and Fang stay lost in the past forever. Best case scenario, at least some of them finally get introduced to the Modern Era and maybe even become main characters.
If every classic character has a modern counterpart, then there's basically no point in the classic timeline.
Other than whiney fan boys who hate "that ugly, stretched out green eyed Sonic!"
Then there's this new character, Trip.
And to that one guy who keeps saying Superstars sold $3 million as a gatcha:
1) evidently that’s not the numbers Sega thought it would be considering this whole thing is “Superstars was a disappointment.” Just because a game looks like it sold a lot on paper, doesn’t mean it underperforms despite what people think of the game.
The fact only two characters have super forms? Is Disappointment 😔
Who else do you want to have a super form?
I think Knuckles deserve it 🤭

This was entirely their fault. It was their fault for keeping Classic Sonic as entirely "nostalgia" rather than simply a design or artstyle difference. It was their fault for making the Mania devs bring back old levels rather than having entirely new levels like they wanted to do, it was their fault for putting Classic Sonic in Forces despite not needing to be in their at all and still reusing Green Hill and Chemical Plant, and it was their fault for Superstars turning out the way it did with the falling out with Evening Star and not allowing the game to go further past Sonic staple environments and mechanics.
Superstars would’ve been fine if it released in place of Sonic 4 back in 2010 with it wearing the title of that game Sonic the Hedgehog 4 or even releasing after Episode 2 as the Episode 3 we never got
And I absolutely agree Classic Sonic is just a gimmick that they refused to let go of even when he played the worst in Forces.
4:52 Nah fam that's the impostor Santiago
fr😭
That's right, bring back the Advance/Rush series
I've seen claims as high as 3 million, no source whatsoever
Am I the only one who thinks it’s kinda sad that the first Sonic game to have Naoto Oshima involved since SA1 was a flop
If SEGA thinks sonic superstars is a disappointment I guess I don’t have to feel bad about not completing it.
CS..is like fast food
You love it once in a while..But having it everytime you will get sick of it one day
I'm gonna wait for the SuperMID lovers to swim into the comments. XD
Not a regular saturday like Superstars was
All I’ll say is, I love superstars and I better get a superstars 2 before their done with modern Sonic.
10:18 Look at Prince of Persia The Lost Crown; one of the best games of 2020, critically acclaimed, and nominated for best action/adventure game, but it sold terribly, and that’s why Ubisoft is slacking on PoP and instead pumping out slop.
Sadly the lesson for these situations tends to be
“X thing had disappointing sales, thus, x thing is a poor choice to go forward with.”
Rather than considering, *why* is achieved less success than [the developers or company] anticipated.
Surely, it has nothing to do with:
- the high release price
- game competition
- unpolished coop gimmick
There are other factors, but, tbh those are a lot more focussed on individual preferences…
we need 2d fully gone in 3d games next
Superstars was a JOKE compared to Mario Wonder, but it doesn't mean the makings of a good game wasnt there...
SEGA: Man, why don't people want to play 2D classic sonic?
Sonic Rush fans: There's a better way...
SONIC RUSH 3 AND ADVENCE 4!!!! LESSS GOOOOO
I personally would be glad if Sega ditches Classic Sonic and just make Modern Sonic games instead.
The only problem I see with Superstars is that it’s too easy
Easy? Those long boss fights, especially for Trip and the multiplayer mode it was advertising say otherwise
Easy? What are you smoking? The final bosses were absolutely brutal.
@@jakighcolburnchannel3584 Long doesn’t mean hard
@@nazomius7033 so we’re gonna pretend Sand Sanctuary, Golden Capital Act 2, Cyber Space, and both versions of the Egg Fortress boss fights don’t exist?
Prem you absolutely nailed it. Classic Sonic is 100% a gimmick. It worked for Gens, but it should have been left there.
its so easy, just continue mania. falling out with the devs? why not just make amends, like damn make me sega president frfr
Classic Sonic and Sonic Superstars wasn't all that bad, I mean it could be worse. They could've brought back Boom Sonic.
If you ask me, Classic Sonic is so limiting to the series.
Classic Characters arent allowed to talk or have any character development. Modern Characters arent allowed to appear in 2D games. Its better if Sega just says its simply a different art direction
and vice versa no classic characters have appeared in modern 3d games
Trip had a character arc in her debut game
And see that we can't have Shadow and Fang Interact In the same game make it even more dumber, What a terrible decision Sega made.
Can we finally have a true rush 3? (Not colors DS or generations 3DS)
9:59 They’re adding Sonic Riders into the Sonic racing games because it makes more sense than a riders game that is far more limited in themes.
This makes no sense superstars was received relatively well.
Do y'all watch the videos?
no tf it wasn’t lmao
a lot of people found it underwhelming and some outright hated it

Classic Sonic should have stayed as a one time appearance in Generations
Superstars sold better than mania and it was better than lost world colour utimate and forces, sega was expecting frontier numbers , also superstar was clearly rushed and didn't have the style of classic sonic games nor the music
Sega thought Classic Sonic was THE shit on the same level as Modern Sonic, but in reality, Modern Sonic is just way more popular than Classic.
Premy's hate for Classic Sonic is so shameless.
His stages would be 3d takes on stages from his past and later Sonic games including Stardust Speedway, Death Egg, Cyber Station, Mad Gear, Final Egg, Egg Fleet, Tropical Resort, and Metropolitan Highway.
the Renaissance is in full force now.
Here's how I see things
The late 2000s and pretty much the whole 2010s were when Classic Sonic needed to return because Sega had alienated the franchise from its roots far too much, trying out a bunch of things that fans just weren't into.
I’m actually happy that we will no longer get classic sonic!
Ok now make 2D modern sonic game like rush or shadow gens level.
8:28 MARIO 3D WORLD IS THE GOAT THOUGH. It might just be nostalgia, but it is one of my favorite Mario games
Sonic superstars was a great game, sad to hear this from sega and the community
I don't mind having Neo Classic Sonic exist in general in the same way I don't mind Movie Sonic existing. The issue is when he being treated equal to Main Sonic in the games.
He should be a skin or side character. He needs to have the same importance as Charmy Bee not Tails lol
Sega's decisions are disappointments. Like, oh, I dunno... releasing the same WEEK as Mario, for one thing. Sonic Superstars itself wasn't a disappointment. It was just mismanaged and poorly handled just like pretty much everything else relating to Sonic that Sega does.
Yk, I fully get what you mean here. Current Classic is treated like a gimmick. While modern sonic...is just sonic. Alot of ppl won't get that
They should have just stuck with the hand drawn visuals, it would have made the game more unique
I like classic sonic but I don't think constantly using him was the smartest idea
For you guys understand there not done with him it's just in question if he is still staying or not.
My main issue was why the heck would they bring arzest back especially for a 2D Sonic
I think they were also working on Balan Wonderworld ...
😢😢😢but sega i love the classic sonic game formula , please dont leave classic sonic. MAKE A BETTER CLASSIC SONIC GAME
increndibly funny to me that we actually got a new sonic game with oshima's involvement that really does capture the essence of the series with its setting, characters and story and then it fails in comparison to other games that are inherently not sonic
Team Sonic Racing was a big hit, so here is another racing game advertised by Shadow himself, so you know it’s good.
Only through growth and time though.
i think the problem is that while modern sonic games are trying new things and getting creative classic sonic games keep pretty much the same gameplay and gimicks with nothing rlly new to bring to the table
i think its also due to how theres nothing to be interested in unless you like a classic sonic fan specifically like regular gamers to them it just looks like another classic sonic game and unless they like those games they wont buy
i think things like new gimmicks or new style or just something that makes these games stand out will make it more interesting
pp love classic sonic and his gameplay style and storytelling and his world and some prefer it over modern sonic so to me this feels like a loss
Maybe...just maybe...They can go in a Sonic Advance direction where classic type gameplay is fun, has modern designs, and new gameplay features.
They're not going to do that though
If sonic superstars was hand drawn like rayman legends I think it would be been a different story.
Hand drawn artstyle after Tyson Hesse or Akira Watanabe’s artstyle would’ve went crazy
This is good news but I don’t think they should abandon the 2D formula, like give us an advanced or rush style game
Was always best to keep the two playstyles separate. Keep Sonic Mania / CD Sonic as a separate game and Adventure Sonic as a separate 3D Sonic game. Sonic Generations got away with it back then. Now there's nothing new.
