I live in Lithuania, we love those things from our Latvian brothers! Here you would find probably more than 10 different brands. So far the best ones for me are Amberfish from a small jar, they are a bit more expensive but they are softer and with tails cut off, smoked to perfection, very delicious. With some brands (I believe Riga's gold) it can be a bit of a luck game as they pack those by fish size. Sometimes your can might contain larger sprats than the other can from the same company. If you pick a can with bigger fish, they have different flavor and are typically stiffer than the small ones. Some people like them, some people don't. Recently one of the companies (don't remember the name) started using transparent lids on their cans, so you can see exactly what you are getting. Nice review!
Your channel provides the best info on canned fish. I love watching your videos to discover new brands. I just made a Rügenfisch keiler sprat sandwich with gerkins, grünkohl, red cabbage with apples, rote beete salat, and tafel-senf
I have nothing interesting to say but commenting early apparently tickles the UA-cam AlgOriTHm and I want this channel to blow up because the content is great and your cats are just adorable.
I was eating some Latvian sprats in tomato sauce, and looked them up for some reason, not expecting much. Apparently there is not just a video but an entire channel dedicated to canned fish. I love UA-cam sometimes.
Two sharks see a school of sardines and one says, "Bro, are you hungry?" The other shark says, "Nah, man, I'm good - you go for it." So the first shark swims right into the school of deenz and chows down on hundreds of the little fishes. Not long after, the first shark curls up in pain and cries, "Oooh, aagh, uurgh!" The second shark asks, "What's the matter, bro?" and the first shark replied, "I forgot you're supposed to wait half an hour before swimming after you eat!" That seems to be a decent amount of fish for about $3, so I suppose the moral of the story is to buy in bulk. Tomorrow I'm picking up 15 bottles of Encona West Indian hot sauce from the post office but the price is low, low, low in bulk! Great vid as always.
I get the Polar Latvian sprats in glass jars. Excellent. But turn them upside down for a while before opening. They are packed standing up in the jars, and the tops are exposed to air inside the jar, the tops of the fish can dry out a litttle, and get tough. Resoaking them in oil (by turning the glass jar upside down for a couple days) fixes the problem to perfection. 🐟
I never thought I would see a channel about canned fish, but then I saw the video about 5 things about sardines. Interesting how channels end up in the feed.
Just started watching your channel. This is by far the best one I’ve seen so far. The analysis of the fish and comparison. The quality of the video and the music was top notch.
I make gift baskets for Christmas every year and the belveder Riga sprays always make great additions. Very classy but still nice and cheap (I buy them for $1.99 a can)
As far as comparable to King Oscar, Brunswick bristling sardines in olive oil is the way to go. Very lightly smoked like KO, both come from the Baltic sea, small, and no tails. And I think they are just slightly firmer then King Oscar
Eating a couple of cans of SOS lemon and EVOO sardines with a side of sour cream n onion Lays while watching this video. You have an entertaining YT channel, thanks for your effort.
Last summer I mistakenly ordered a case of the Rigas, the can you had was not the same as the ones I have. Those look a lot smaller and not nearly as well packed inside.
I never tried an upscale Latvian bristling, but the Riga and other more-affordable Latvian brands I tried, I really wanted to like, but the smokiness was just too much to withstand. The tails didn't help either. I'd like to try the Belvederes though.
I like the Brunswick bristling sardines in olive oil. Not quite Latvian but dang close, and no tails with a very light smoke flavor, like a slightly better king Oscar. Most all the stuff from the Baltic sea is lightly smoked, so if they actually say "smoked " then they're usually extra smokey!
Big change up with the 2-can variant!!! Which leads me to ask the question, HOW MANY CANS OF DINES CAN MATTHEW CARLSON CHOW DOWN ON, in one setting??????
I can eat Riga Gold Sprats all day FOREVER, then soak up the oil with some fresh bread. The reason for the can style and same black/gold labeling is because this is how they were packaged during USSR days going back decades. Only change is that they added pull-tabs. I used to wait in "breadlines" with my parents in late 80's hoping that the grocery would have some in stock. No doubt the target market is heavy on nostalgia for the taste and look with older folks who are immigrants to the US from that part of the world. I'd never buy anything else, and go to an "ethnic" store to specifically get these as a treat once in a while. I think they get re-labeled in Brooklyn. Go figure. =)

I like sprats (or "Sprotten" how we call them here in GER) fresh from the fridge. They're not as oily as the canned ones which enhances the beech-smoked aroma. They're also really cheap here and kind of an oldschool food. They were probably arleady made this way in medieval times. First specific mention I know of is from the 18th century.
