Am I the only one who enjoys the strain in his voice? He is showing raw emotion and that makes you feel much more than a simply "perfect" voice. I loved this
Agree agree agree. Real love is trusting that the other sees your flaws and accepts you despite them and is, in some cases, even more endeared because of them. This song couldn't have sounded any more perfect to me.
That's why the original recording of this song (from "Places That You've Come to Fear the Most") was my preferred version vs. the radio version. - steve
That warms my heart. My wife left me 7 months ago after 10 years together and 5 years of marriage and I sometimes just listen to this song for a good cry. Pretty fucked on my part for forcing myself to sad. I did jump a gate and let her in once in college. lol
I just have a hard time thinking this to be true. Part of the mystique of first meeting someone is not knowing if it's for sure. I would imagine you have a little more security in your relationship now, right? I'm very happy for you. It's just hard for me to fathom this concept. I acknowledge that you have no reason to make this up, so not accusing you of lying. Just asking for clarification. How is it possible when you are so sure of each other? My high school sweetheart when this song came out, although magical, we both had so much changing left to do. And we did. Now she is someone I could never see myself with from a personality perspective. It's so amazing you guys have stuck together through the changing of the tides. Were there no changes you had to adapt to with her? Everyday is seriously no question? I admire you, and am cheering you on.
@@tymirra8769 reading this 2 years later. Hope all is well with you, my friend. Life is nothing without struggle. Nothing bad ends without reason. I hope you arrived at that.
I’m legitimately stumped at the comments! I consider myself a pretty critical audience and don’t particularly have a thing for this guy; however I found that performance to be nothing less than absolutely moving. I also think he looks fantastic!
I'm just reading these comments getting irate over here. People are have no idea what pitch is. This performance is raw and breathtaking. Contemporary listener ears are so saturated with fake autotuned, vocaligned, doubled, and compressed vocal tracks in popular music and on these stupid fake singing shows they cant recognize the perfection in something thats real but just slightly rough around the edges.
@@kevinmccord8847 I know right? I feel like even if I didnt play any instruments I'd still love this version way more than the original though. he puts just as much emotion into the strumming of the chords as he puts into his vocals
Dude, this is not just a song. This is a memory that is being shared that was integral in his life. This is an amazing story. The vocals were super emotional, shit almost had me in tears low key. This was so good
So many comments about Chris's voice and looks. We all age, if we have the privilege of doing so. Over time, our voices change and no performance is ever a carbon copy of another. I had the honor of my emotions being placated/redeemed by this man's lyrics and music in my twenties. I have nothing but admiration and respect. I am grateful, for it has helped me endure those ominous and formative years. Love to all going through something that this connects to.
It's nice to hear an updated version of this song. It's been years since I've actually listened to this song. Amazing song. Brings me back to 2009/2010
This version hits so hard, you can tell he was dealing with some shit before this performance, I have recently watched him play live, and he sang this song and was so happy, but this version is so heartbreaking and so filled with such emotion and heartbreak, and I love it
Breathe in for luck, Breathe in so deep, This air is blessed, You share with me. This night is wild, So calm and dull, These hearts they race, From self control. Your legs are smooth, As they graze mine, We're doing fine, We're doing nothing at all. My hopes are so high, That your kiss might kill me. So won't you kill me, So I die happy. My heart is yours to fill or burst, To break or bury, Or wear as jewellery, Whichever you prefer. The words are hushed lets not get busted; Just lay entwined here, undiscovered. Safe from the hour and all the stupid questions "Hey did you get some?" Man, that is so dumb. Stay quiet, stay near, stay close they can't hear So we can get some. My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me. So won't you kill me, so I die happy. My heart is yours to fill or burst, To break or bury, or wear as jewellery, Whichever you prefer. Hands down this is the best date I can ever remember, Always remember, the sound of the stereo, The dim of the soft lights, The scent of your hair that you twirled in your fingers And the time on the clock when we realized it's so late And this walk that we shared together. The streets were wet and the gate was locked so I jumped it, And let you in. And you stood at your door with your hands on my waist And you kissed me like you meant it. And I knew that you meant it, that you meant it, That you meant it, and I knew, That you meant it, that you meant it.
I’ve seen a lot of comments about his voice being rough. His voice might not be what it used to be but this is raw and real and it’s a great story. Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen don’t have good voices but they tell amazing stories.
Serenaded this song to my girlfriend 12 years ago. Got married, and 2 kids later, still sing this song to her. Thanks for this beautiful rendition Chris!
Thats the best iv ever heard him sing this song!! something must of made him reconnect with the lyrics after all these years of singing it to get a performance like that!, so good...
I know he doesn't hit every note but man, this version got me more than any other version because you can feel all his emotions he put into this performance. Great job, even though his singing isn't as good as it used to be.
I always preferred their one live version of this song the most, but after giving this one a few run throughs, dang, this is hard to beat....20 years after the fact, performing it acoustic and solo. Amazing.
This song was like the anthem of my heart when I was in a toxic relationship in 2002-03. And not too long after I stopped listening to it because it brought up so many painful memories. Then I met my wife in 2011 and just recently realized how much the bridge or outro or whatever its called reminds me of one of my wife's and my first dates(August 27th, 2011). I think it was our 6th date. But hands down, its the best day I can ever remember, I'll always remember.... .
Went to the show at Foxwoods a couple of weeks ago. You guys are still amazing live. It was the 2nd time I've gotten to see you live. Thanks for all the years of great music.
I agree... he looks like "i cant believe i am still singing this song".. He has lots of great new music, but this was his peak. He doesnt look too good in this video.
That's not grief... he's been playing this song for like 15 years. He's just borderline blown out his voice and is probably tired of playing this song haha
just now i saw this acoustic version, and i feel the side story of this song, it was sad. and when he hit the high notes in a last part. iwas dout because maybe he cant because of his age. but he can and it was so amazing and yet Im still crying. 😭😭
it's beautiful. he's not young but the emotion still stays the same. Though some of the notes are somewhat "off notes" but still the emotion is deeply felt that it still feels like its right.
I like even this version of the song. Captures that feeling even still. Chris is older now, as we all are, but this song meant the same thing to us all when it came out. That feeling of the new beginning of a relationship.
Seeing comments about his voice.. What's life without a risk or two? The few notes he missed he made up for with emotion and killed the rest of them. Anyone can play it safe At least he's got balls man it's not easy to sit up there and commit like that. Bravo i say Bravo!

i feel like there could be an album where every song is the same song but each version is from a different year. if an artist could take this idea and take a hit from when they were in their early 20's and record it every 5 years until they die. that would be deep. i dont know if it would be like hearing this recording here but this is cool
Man... I remember waking up early before school to watch this video on tv when it first came out. Been such a long time, for some reason I wanted to listen to remember to breathe and this came up. Can't believe it's been so long. On to Early November next lol. Wonder how they look now.
The Early November was my favorite band for a hot minute around my senior year in high school. A friend burned me a CD of the Acoustic EP and I would blast that every night at the kitchen at work. I totally forgot about them until now. Thanks for reminding me.
