You can use a bottom layer with substrate that drains even more (or a larger particle size) - but you dont have to. If you use a mix of akadama, pumice and lava you should be fine.

QUESTION- Do those pots have drainage holes? I was just gifted a bonsai tree in a ceramic pot. But there isn’t any drainage holes? Do I need to re-pot it?
Hi, I have a few months old pin oak growing in my backyard right now and I was thinking of turning it to bonsai, should I wait for the next spring to remove it from the soil and pot in a bonsai pot or should I do it sooner than that?
Well you can dig around your tree (quite widely) this fall to give the tree time to grow a more compact root system. Then next spring you can dig it out and place it in a large container.
Just bought mine 2 days ego, it looks healthy, but I always heard to report it as soon as you reach home , can I do so in this winter? Your answer would be very appreciated /Tx
i am in the last month of spring, and my bonsai is about 2 and a half years old. Is it too late to repot, I have the signs of circling roots and I am worried about leaving it another year...
Its not about the time in the spring, but about the tree showing signs of growth. You want to repot before the tree actively grows - what tree species do you have, and does it grow already?
Hi! I just received 2 bonsai, Azalea and Gardenia. Both came from Bonsai Outlet. I was told the soil isn’t great but I’m not sure if I should take it all the way out and the anchor. It’s mid summer, and the Azalea came with blooms, and gardenia looks super healthy tho has a few yellow leaves which I assume was because of transport.
@@bonsaiempire I was told by a bonsai expert to replace 50% so then I’m wondering if I should remove the anchor? Feels like if I remove the anchor that would be more than 50 so not sure which way to go.

I have a question, if you buy a Bonsai tree in the spring time. Do you have to repot it immediately or wait? Because i’m getting one off of amazon, and I do not know if it has been rerooted yet.
Its not about spring - its about being on time and repot before the ree becomes active. So often, this is early spring. If you miss this point, your next slot is mid fall!
Hello, I'm new to this and am trying to understand the basics of keeping bonsai. I've been given a ficus that's been potted in what looks to be normal everyday potting soil, the kind you'd put a houseplant in. Should I repot it in something closer to the soil recommended in this video as soon as possible, or is it okay to leave it like that until the roots start to overgrow, like advised here? Also, it seems like the tree in this video was also originally potted in something much more loamy. Is there any significance to that?
I'd repot in the next early spring, into proper bonsai substrate. The bonsai substrate drains much better, which your tree will like - but you will need to check daily to see if your tree needs water.
Dead plant matters such as peat, leaf-litter, or bark are described as being organic soil components. The potential problem with organic soil components is that organic matter breaks down and reduces drainage over time. Inorganic soil components contain little to no organic matter such as volcanic lava, calcite, and baked/fired clays.

When repotting a bonsai tree do you need to put pumice or similair in bottom of pot for drainage before you put soil and tree
