Way too much gate keeping in the skating community. The sport still has so much room for growth. Call it “selling out” but that’s just the reality when it comes to growth in any sport. Needs to expand to a wider audience.
I am happy that more professionals are taking the youtube route cause it makes more sense to do. You have much more control and market yourself. I love moose channel and Tom asta. Also prod. I think the times are changing due to these avenues being open now. But its a slow long grind. Plus the "youtube skater" debate from the core from the non core is here now lol. Still glad for the growth overall and hope it continues
Skateboarding is a very expressive sport, being among the "best" won't necessarily net you lots of money due in part to that. Also the NBA is the elite of professional players. I don't know if every G-leager for example is making good money.
I mean yea i don't know forsure if they all make that much but I was making the point that almost every pro can make a living in those sports but in skating really good skaters are barely making it
I'll never forget seeing a day in the life video with Cole Wilson who used to be pro for Foundation where he was paying around $200 a month to rent out someones closet in Long Beach... Side note, UA-camrs used to get shit on for skate vlogging and now industry pro's have been trying to break through because the UA-cam money can sometimes be more than what they normally make.
Dang bro you should’ve warned me on this one!!! Seeing dude trying the 5.0 break his ankle like that made me feel like I broke my ankle like that!!! But yeah agree with you 100%.. The Nyjah’s/P-Rod’s/Shecklers/Dyrdek’s are doing it RIGHT! Eventually you’re gonna settle down, have a family, now it’s not just “travel around the world, skate and party”, now it’s “oh shit I’m 35, not skating as good as I used too, I have a wife and 2 kids, gotta pay a mortgage/car payments/college funds, wtf am I gonna do now???” I’d be taking the biggest sponsors or whoever’s paying the bag to secure my future.. There’s obviously some lines you’re not gonna cross but these kids really need to do a better job looking out for their future.. You can’t skate until your 60 and retire, shit these young kids barely wanna watch someone over 30 skating, and then what? You’re 30 some years old with no good paying sponsors, which is only gonna get worse, no type of retirement setup, and no experience at any jobs
Man it really is tough out here. You really have to be smart financially and consider your future at such a young age and you risk so much injury to really make barely enough to get by in one of the most expensive city's in the u.s. thank God we can be Influncers now but damn
"doomed to a mediocre life doing what they love to do" is a bit much and a paradox aswell..its just U.S hypercapitalistic culture that has made people unhappy with what they have and always want more . The Moose video showed a guy in one of the most expensive and beautiful places on earth having his own place and having time to skate aswell , seems like a pretty good life .
I can completely understand your perspective. It is hyper competitive here. And also not everyone wants to live at those high standards. More of the point I was making was it just sucks that most professional skateboarders really can't live off of skateboarding alone. You put so many years dedicated to your craft and make so much money for your sponsors to see very little of it. Even for moose, as long as he's happy with his life than more power too him. He did seem pretty content and chill and I respect that complete. But for me personally, I would love to make enough so I would really have to worry about money like other major sports are
Want to make money in skateboarding? Skip the companies and make a Patreon. Make business partners with a media crew and agree to split the contributions. Hell, team up with other independent skateboarders to make content only accessible to patrons. I think it would be slow going at first, but this has become the business model for so many people whose primary product is media.
Yes this is great. I think there is a guy named local Joe that does that and his channel is doing great! There are more opportunities now so I should be complaining so much. I just want skaters to who are pro to make a better living mainly
Yea man. It really needs to be discussed more because it's such a young man's sport. At least know if it's worth it and how to navigate the financial aspect
Sadly, skateboarders don't know their value to their brands and therefore get taken advantage of because of it. If the social media strategist or photographer for one of these skate companies made as much, they'd likely tell the company to kick rocks. However, the people featured in the photo that is featured on the social media campaign can usually get paid less than either of those two and be happy just to have a job. Nah. Skateboarders should band together and go on strike or start their own companies that pay skateboarders according to their worth to reset going rates. But I doubt if that will ever happen because there's always some young skater willing to crack their skull on camera for a brand ad in exchange for a deck. If you want to get paid by the skateboarding industry, you're probably better off driving a forklift in the company's distribution warehouse, becoming a video editor, or starting a skate shop within spitting distance of a skatepark. All of those are more sustainable aspirations.
Yes it will take a whole wave of people willing to disrupt the skate culture and leave alot of money on the take to make it work. But unfortunately we need money to live so it's very unlikely to happen. But a boy can dream lol. I think the youtube game is helping out a bit with exposure without having to go to mainstream companies. Like prod and Tom asta are doing great
Skateboarding isn't marketed enough or in the right way. You need to get off of the idea about selling out, you have to sell out to get into the market. The same thing has happened to sports like Hockey, Lacrosse, WNBA etc. There is no marketing going on to the level there is for NFL for instance so people don't get into it.
@@tonyperksexperience1988 do you ever watch Michael relevant? He is a Christian skateboarder u tuber. He has good skateboarding content and he has been ride n for a while ,as well I like your Channel a lot too. I've been watching it for a while now I am stoked the hear that you are a Christian.
I just subbed to his channel a few days ago. I haven't watch much of his stuff yet. I have to check his stuff out more. I'm glad to see more Christians in skating and being more vocal about it. There is a undertone of demonic stuff I've seen in the skate industry.... but that's a whole other topic.
You know what I was thinking earlier watching Kevin Baekels new part which gnarly as hell and remembered how he's sponsored by Monster and thought to myself I bet nobody says shit to this dude or calls him a sellout besides maybe a few people because his ability level of skating and style are both really good especially skating big handrails same with Jamie Foy being sponsored by Red Bull no one in the core community says shit to him because they know he probably deserves it but Nyjah on the other hand I think he gets the most hate because of his fit, style, and personality
Yea thats a good point. It's very selective outrage for people in the core. I'm all for people just doing what they want to do. Your truly only a sellout when you sign up for stuff that you truly don't use and you are actually against. People back in the day thought dudes who rode for monster and redbull were sell outs and not its normal. Same with the Nike shoes with prod. Now it's normal. Sooner than later the Olympics will just be a normal thing in the skate community.
@@tonyperksexperience1988 Yeah true my issue with Nike is how greedy/corporate they are and the negative impact on the environment from so many people buying their shoes (and peope buying shoes in general) it causes I don't think they even do the plant a tree for each shoe you buy that companies like Etnies do with every shoe of theirs i buy they plant a tree to somewhat help give back to the environment.
I think it's delusional to expect to make a comfortable living as a skateboarder. That is for the very chosen few that have the skill and the luck (and maybe marketable looks). What your describing is pretty much the life of a professional inline skater or other extreme sports athlete. Reality is, for most if not all, skating is a recreational thing, and not something to go into expecting to make a living from.
What you saying is so true..this comment should be pinned to the top. I mean it's sound harsh but it's just the reality of things. We need to start managing expectations when people decide to switch to pro from recreational as if it's so simple. There's so many caveats and variables to consider it's almost not worth it.
I can understand your points here. I think its just crazy to be labeled a professional in a extreme sport and you really can't afford to live on yout own for the most part. Also it really comes down to how marketable you are because it's not a traditional sport. I'm realizing that skateboarding may never be the place that you can really make a great career and maybe just doing it for the love. But also there are no set parameters to go pro either. It's a lot
Yea I agree. It just so unfortunate that in order to really make a career in skating you have to have more avenues of income. That's what I've realizing
Because skateboarding isn't held in a stadium every weekend with people buying tickets. You're average person doesn't know or care about a skateboarding event or is willing to go pay to watch it .
That is true. I'm realizing that there may never be much money in skateboarding. It's just not a thing that average people watch enough. It's kinda like the wnba at this point lol
I'm not saying that's the only way but what is the downside of bringing more money into the sport? Also there will always be people on both sides of the core and non core so it will never really die off
Yeah, this topic is complicated and has many sides. I would just say that there are several tendencies which I do not like about the current state of skateboarding, for example: non-skateboarding companies creeping into the field (Rockstar, Red Bull, Monster etc) and making skaters their "brand slaves"; "superstar skateboarders" and reality shows and other BS that comes with it; big franchise competitions which are sort of helping to produce those "competition-oriented skaters" whose attitude seams pretty different from street-style ethos. Those tendencies are all related to "bringing money into the sport". On the other hand, as life is getting more expensive and precarious - as you said, living in LA is more and more expensive - skaters themselves are in need of more money. But it also seems that this is a more USA-related issue (I think we all see that this USA-style economic reality is not helping anyone besides the rich...).
Your right it is very complicated. I don't mind the brands that are getting involved in skating as long as they are actually committed to the skate culture. Nike did a good job at is so far. But the biggest skate scene in the world currently is southern California and it's one of the most expensive places to live. Even though it is capitalistic culture, it does provide you with an opportunity to make more money if you learn about economics. With skating... I just sucks that it cost so much to get into skateboarding and then to try and make a living doing it is even worse when you actually have the talent and notoriety.
Just keep in mind that the cost of living in LA is that high because of this nice little fluffy capitalism - cost of living is not high because of some deterministic law, it is high because of the overall economical situation in the USA, and the money problems that some pro skaters have are also related to that situation :)
Yea thats a good point. It is high because of capitalism but you also have the opportunity to make a lot of money due to capitalism also. It's not perfect and has flaws but also there is opportunity once you learn how to find them
Respect my dude. Needed to see this. I thought heaps of Pro skaters were making decent money. BMX is pretty much the same. Only the cream of the crop get the riches anything under, you can see by how everyone’s living that no one is making that Extreme Sports money like it was in the late 90’s and 2000’s.. All those sports that are higher paying are all traditional sports and if I can take it somewhere else for a second. I think this is all a perfect design controlled by the Elites. I could go on and on.
Man you already know! Extreme sports aren't as watched as the main stream sports so I get it. But man its just crazy how EXTREME sports don't pay as well and have more money coming in. Crazy

Those other sports require pads for protection, therefore if you want to compare them to skateboarding then treat them equally. Also, sorry dude, pro sports have more viewers. You're not wrong about the rest though.
I agree that other sports have more views and it brings the money in. Street league did do a great job of making skating more accessible to the masses. And true with the pads and helmet but it doesn't stop a broken leg or ankle unfortunately. But that comes with every sport.
