I well remember the twisty drive from Alamagordo through Cloudcroft one evening in 2017. They had the tunnel under construction at night, so I had to spend the night on the side of the road until it opened next morning. I had noticed that something was wearing out my trailer tires prematurely, and when I finally got to Artesia, one wheel was on fire. I parked behind a grocery store and got someone to look at it. When they jacked it up, the drum cracked in two and the wheel fell off! I was stuck there for 5 days. How I got down that mountain without careening off a cliff or even noticing much wrong I cannot say. But here I am, so I must have made it.
Fun!! One of my favorite roads is between Durango and Silverton and Ouray. Million Dollar Highway! One time a huge truck was tailgating me going dowhill! Scary.
Hi Rusty, Enjoyed the change and variety of scenery as you climbed in altitude. Your feelings about driving through tunnels is the way I feel about driving over tall bridges! Thanks for sharing this area of NM.
Jeez I would probally get car sick even if i was driving, with the winding road and elevation. Rusty you drive just like i do when they stack up behind me i just tell myself I'm probally saving some lives by making them slow down. Haha! Beautiful drive, Thank You!
Sitting in first class waiting to fly to San Antonio listening to your driving trip to Cloud croft: I snorted my drink laughing when you said: “ Have a few high balls in Cloud croft and then fly down this mountain.” Sir Rusty that was by far the funniest thing I heard all day. Thanks for the laugh. Glad to be going back to Texas for a while. Cheers 🍻
Super video Rusty! I lived in Farmington when I was a kid back in the 50's. Your driving vids continue to improve. I think they're some of the best on the Net! Thanks!
Great channel, Rusty! Your down-home, honest, country style approach won me over. Say, Heading back to centex from Alamogordo, any one else notice the land-for-sale sign on I-10 just east of Sierra Blanca, advertising '20-acres, $165 per month.' LoL 😂 Only 88 miles to El Paso. Why the hell not. Anything's better than Austinistan.
I don't like that run up the mountain either. Going up I have done it in a four cylinder car, six cylinder, and eight cylinder. Eight is best because the others start getting hot if you get caught behind a RV at 40-45 mph. The eight cylinder got 59 mpg going down. Good video!
You need to drive over to Trinity Site where the First Atomic Bomb was tested. Its over there by White Sands someplace. The bomb got so hot it formed a rock out of the white sand called "Trinite". Only other place they found rock like this was at the bottom of the dead sea.
I remember the drive when I was stationed at Alamogordo AF Base back in 1984, looks a lot like it did back then. Something that might help when driving up high grades... take a couple of aspirins (thins the blood out) and lots of fluids to keep from from getting dehydrated.
Yep. my dad carried a huge square large red jug of water , strapped on to the front of the radiator , when he when thru NM.. Co. and up to washington state. . I remember that . like yesterday. I was just a little one too. he had a Edsil. and it kept breaking down. Yep. it was good at that.
I drive from Santa Fe (7200 feet) to Taos (6900 feet, about 70 miles) in northern part of the state and there are mountains/canyons/etc on the way up when you get north of Espanola. Been a few times when its rainy decent size rocks have fallen onto the roads. One fell right in front of a small bus I was riding.
Awe, Rusty, I so appreciate your video. I'm headed this year . Last there 2012. Meaning for cloudcroft is appreciated . Looking forward to part . Do you know height of tunnel? I'm driving a small C class. 12ft tallest point Engine is a E350 v10 SUPER. HEAVY DUTY. You "rock" Rusty. Great video thanks for taking me along. From Oklahoma safe travels Jp,$🐞
Great drive Rusty , it always gave me an uneasy feeling driving up or down mountains too especially on the cliff side where the guard rail is . There was a tunnel near Somerset Pennsylvania that would unnerve me a bit also .
Thanks Rusty for the tutorial on Rocky mountain driving, beautiful area and a good road. Having grown up in the West, six or more thousand feet elevation is common, it's the grade and cliff hangers that can get scary. The road from Red Lodge MT over Beartooth pass would not be advised for you, steep, windy and a cliff hanger!
Safety corridors in New Mexico are stretches that have a history of frequent severe crashes. Traffic fines are doubled there. There are some safety corridors in certain places on I-40 and I-25 too.
Looks like fun! What kind of stuff do they have in those shops? I luv shopping ❤️ That tunnel looked scary Rusty! You’re brave to do these videos while driving!
I meant like is it souvenir type trinkets or clothing or local artists or antiques or what type of stores ? The last time I went to New Mexico as a kid all the shops were like Native American Craft type stuff and tourist souvenirs. It’s all good though Rusty 🙂 Enjoy your trip!
I miss Cloudcroft. Spent my highschool years there.

That is a great hostel btw, unless the sound of elk and hummingbirds makes you grumpy. Nice video
Thank you for that drive Rusty. Beautiful scenery!

Been there many times and hiked the OSHA trail and Rim trails that you passed on the way. Good tour. Thanks!!!

Thank you Rusty this sure brings back memories

17' is height of tunnel. My C class will be able to go through. In your video I stood close to my TV and was able to see ht. Thanks👍
cool video talk rusty lol and driving your truck
I played golf at Cloud Croft one time. Nice place!
Great drive Rusty , it always gave me an uneasy feeling driving up or down mountains too especially on the cliff side where the guard rail is . There was a tunnel near Somerset Pennsylvania that would unnerve me a bit also .
I've been to cloudcroft a number of time on the way to sunspot nm, to see the solar observatory.
I wonder how that altitude would affect alcohol comsumption?

That was quite a climb. Better have a good vehicle to pull a camper across it.
Beautiful country setting. 👍
Cloudcroft NM looks like a little town from Six flags. .
Thank you Rusty, be safe.

Hey Rusty. Does your Dodge have a tow\haul feature or do you leave it in drive when towing Casita
All that snow on top of that tall mountain is why it’s called Sierra Blanca.
Thank you for the trip.

Good Lord Rusty, you sound as if you may need to change your underwear after your drive up the mountain. 😂
?????????
God Bless You Mr. Head
@@davidlynnprepperprincipal3540 🤔👍👍👍
👍
Been there years ago.
When I was a kid.
Stop in at the old apple barn and give us a review
Hahaha love the Apple barn!
Keep right except to pass was the first motor vehicle statute written in New Jersey except it appears nobody got the memo.
That's a good reason to have only a small trailer. Less is more as you know.
Gas is $1.20 more in southern California. I miss being New Mexico.
If the mountain road is too steep gearing should be used to maintain a safe speed.
I meant Holloman AF Base in Alamogordo
A safety corridor is where there have been many accidents.
Yes, the Sacramentos.
Granite Shores
Maybe they should call that road Heart Attack parkway. Bring your oxygen tank.
Seems like the low oxygen content has affected the video quality. Lol
First
Looks like there is some incredible National Forest campgrounds up there, but I don't see Rusty towing the Casita up there???
Its n.m. if it's 70 , people go 90 !
