    Eritreans speak about nine different languages in the Afro-Asiatic category but over 85% of the Eritrean population speaks a native Semitic languages called Tigre and Tigrigna. The two languages are mostly compatible with each other and are both based on Geez; an ancient language of the Axumite Empire in Horn of Africa. Search Google for Tigrigna and Tigre for more info. Hope this has clarified something for you...
    BTW in this video they are speaking in Tigrigna.

    Actually they are speaking in Tigrinya, an Eritrean/North Ethiopian language. It is sorta related to Arabic but it is a distinct different language from Arabic. I will give you an example that you might be familiar with, Tigrinya is to Arabic as Spanish is to Portuguese. Does that make sense?

    Eritrea means 'Land on the red sea'. It was so named by Italian writer Carlo Dossi, when Italian Rubbattino shipping company bought the land from Ethiopia to build port in 1890s. It was an Italian colony like Ethiopia in the 1930s. It is very much like Ethiopia, great history, beautiful people, shouldn't be divided from Ethiopia with whom they're fighting for a piece of desert! Its people are mostly christians.

    No it is in Tigringa. Tigringa is spoken in Eritrea and North Ethiopia. But Tigringa is a semitic language just like Arabic is but Tigringa precedes Arabic in terms who existed first. There is also a lot of similarity between Tigringa and Arabic. Hope this helps.

    Ge'ez and pre-Ge'ez languages were the language of our Habesha ancestors, all of which were Semetic (just so peope understand, Semetic does not mean white or black, it's just a grammar form used in language).
    During the Ge'ez days, our Habesha ancestors migrated and spread further south from modern day Eritrea and northen Ethiopia to more central Ethiopia. Because of the huge migrations and the centuries, the Habesha tribe eventually developed seperate languages but still are Habesh

    Recent research is showing that Semetic languages are indigeous to Eritrea and the most northern parts of Ethiopia.
    Habesha ppl are also indigenous to that ame locale. The Habesha ppl are a very large tribe of people who became divided by several languages (Tigre, Tigrinya, Amharic, Gurage, Hararri and maybe a couple lesser known languages) but all of these people are from the same Habesha tribe. Nothing to do with dividing ourselves from other africans. You & I are Habesha Africans

    Yes yes, we have the same ancestors, thats why most Horn Africans (Afro-asiatic Semitic and Cushitic groups mind you) look alike.
    I have been mistaken for an Eritrean a few times. Some ladies spoke to me in the language they are speaking in this video. I just shook my head and said sorry im Somali hahahahaha

  • @Hottides
    @Hottides 16 років тому

    Although Tigrinya belongs to the Semitic language family, like Amharic, it probably has borrowed much structure and many words from non-Semitic African languages such as Somali. A better analogy to Tigrinya may be English, which is Germanic at base, but is loaded with Romance influence.

    @babyniki19 Hi there I have always wondered that too...I was only told that arabs have labeled us as such and we use it to specify ourselves...I've asked numerous people what that word means but all Im told is people who are from Ethiopia and Eritrea are called this. No clear definition, I would love to know myself too as a person with Ethiopian parents. It seems like an excluding label to divide us from other people who are black or african.

    Dear henfest, I've read the books & I have 2 degrees on the subject. Perhaps the books are wrong. Dossi was a linguist who worked for Italian Prime Minister Crispi who tried to conquer Ethiopia (& lost at Adowa, 1896, but retained Eritrea as an Italian colony). The Kingdom of Abyssinia was then formed by King Menelik. If you know better then tell us, or else shut up, & BTW, get a life.
