I really enjoyed this. You may want to do some more mold prep, such as Packaging tape on the cardboard to prevent it from coming part and being stuck to the project you are making.
Fun tip for anyone trying something like this, if you don't have that thin leather to wrap around the handle, you can go buy a cheap belt from a big box store, i.e. Wal-Mart, and those things actually have three layers, two thin layers of faux leather on either side of a thicker rubber strap. Just peel the layers apart and you can use that, if you can't afford the cost of fancy craft materials like that.

Try adding petroleum jelly to the parts that you don’t want to get stuck with glue or resin , very useful when you are doing tangs or handles and you want a tight fit
