I remember fighting to install NeXTstep 3.3 for intel on a Cyrix, a long time ago. What a great environment those days, when first m$ windows were junk (today, it still is..). Long life to xnu!
Thanks so much for sharing this. I ran into the same disk initialization error when installing on my Sparcstation 5 when using a scsi2sd. Your fix worked like a champ.
Very nice! One of my favorite vintage OSes on a practically-forgotten platform (well, kinda; HP-UX is well-known but almost nobody remembers that NeXTstep ran on it). Also, the HP 712 is just a cool-looking little box, kinda halfway between the SPARCStation 20's "all business" look and the SGI Indy's "party time" look.
I've been wanting this machine since I watched your video looong ago and I just got one from ebay - it will make good company to my C8000 (that sees lots of use) and yes, thanks for the tips, it will save me a lot of time! Hope you get to some videos on your new projects at any time in the future. =)
I loved the gecko workstations. Always had my choice of Sparcstations 5s and 20s but always went for the 712/100. Just seemed all around faster and certainly quieter. I've loaded Openstep on a SS20 and it's just a hot and noisy mess.
hello i recently bought a hp pro opt 2600 assuming it was a scsi cd for my roland sampler though it was not and the slot was too large for a conventional cd. after some research i figured it could need a cd caddy so i ordered one from ebay. upon arrival the caddy did not fit either. So my question is what on earth is the correct media for this drive before i lose it and throw the damn thing in the trash!
How did you write the NextStep 3.3 iso image file to a physical compact disc? The file is not a regular .iso file as I know in Windows. Edit: I can boot NextStep 3.3 iso file on a sd card in a ZuluSCSI adapter.
Very nice! I installed NeXTStep on my 712/60 few years ago. Since then I had only very little time to play with. I would like now to replace my noisy SCSI HD, with your fine SCSI2SD-V5 solid state solution. I saw that a new V6 SCSI2SD card is available now. Is it compatible with 712 hardware? Waiting for your next videos ... Thanks!
Miraculously, I got my hands on the same computer. Thanks for the great tutorial. Do I understand correctly that there is no DHCP client in NextStep? I look forward to continuing the story about working with the network.
What keyboard make and model do you use on the hp712.. Next step is super picky. IBM model m does not work. And old hp keyboard does not work. A cheap modern HP keyboard works. I like your better.
Its 2024 and I am still begging for more videos. I like the style. Its simple, well explained, professional, right to the point.

This is an awesome video and channel. Keep up the good work - you definitely deserve more than 92 subscribers!
Wow - bloody awesome! Instant subscribe.
This must be the cutest CD drive I've ever seen. I hope you get it sorted.
I love it! Keep 'em coming. I really enjoyed the glamour shots of the computer!

A fascinating slice of computing history. Thanks for putting this together!
Nice job! I especially like the part where you configured the scsi2sd as a cd.
"Emacs , oh I shouldn't of installed that, I use vi" :thumbs up: legend.
Well, she is a dev for various BSDs, so... You know. GNU-heads need not apply. :D
This is great :) Took me back to buying and repairing IPXs you could buy in bulk on Canal street.
Love your videos. Keep up the great work!

Awesome! Thank you for sharing. I remember NEXT.
Very interesting to look back. Keep it up :)
Great job for your first video. I wonder how many HP PA RISC are out there running Next Step? Keep up the great work!
I have the 80 Model and 64MB Parity RAM.
Cute voice and great content !!
Impressive
Especially the knowledge to fake the cd

I think that you're right - I haven't seen any way to configure DHCP as a client. I hope you have fun with your machine!
Were you able to interact with the BIOS soft keys (the yellow ones at the bottom of the screen) using the IBM PS/2 keyboard?
Yes! It works just fine using the function keys
