  • This is part one of my Hadrian's Wall Coast to Coast trip that I walked in May 2014. This instalment sees us start from Bowness-on-Solway and walk to the Bleatarn Campsite east of Carlisle on Day 1, from there we then walked to Greenhead on day 2 and had our first glimpses of the wall.

I’m an American born in Texas but I have a profound love for American and world history, and this walk is something I’ve always wanted to take part in. I’m hoping once I leave the military I can make my way over to England and give this a go! Thank you for posting!

Hi Dean. First, thank you for creating and publishing this series of videos. As a hiker, I really enjoy good hiking videos on youtube. I found yours and over a period of several nights, watched all 3 of the Hadrian's Wall hike videos. They were really fun to watch. The HD format and your great, interesting, and fun commentary made them all something to look forward to each evening - thank you for that. A few other notes that made this so interesting: 1. I've always enjoyed Roman military history, and seeing the wall brought that all to life. 2 - I lived in England from May, 1963 to Jan. 1966 (military dependent - US Air Force). We lived near Huntingdon, and were stationed at RAF Alconbury (leased by the US Air Force). As a young man, I was interested in walking, and recall seeing the signs for "public footpaths". However, no one wanted to walk them besides me, so I missed on that opportunity. So, viewing your videos gave me an opportunity to see the beauty of your countryside. 3 - For most of my adult life, my hobby has been hiking, and photographing the hikes (now in digital photos and videos). I live in northern Georgia, not far from the southern end of the Appalachian Trail (AT). While I enjoy the forests and high mountains of the Appalachians, I also enjoy hiking in the open, especially when one can see views of the surrounding area. Your video, especially the second one where you had so many interesting and beautiful views, really appealed to me. One other note (sorry for the long commentary), I was impressed that you and your companion hiked 32 miles in one day! My best in the mountains is 26, and I was 20 years younger when I did it! Thanks again Dean, look forward to further communication. - Ken

I walked that a few years ago, west to east was the best way to do it. Your video brought back lots of happy memories. It was my first solo LDP. I was lucky as I had one five minute rainfall on the whole walk. I took over 800 photos, every signpost and great view. Still need to upload the whole lot on flickr. I went on to do the 147 mile Viking Way after that. Didn't enjoy that one at all. Then decided a 100km from London to Brighton was a good idea, as you do! Not sure which LDP, to do next.

Hi mate, I really enjoyed the Hadrian's Wall trek. I'm still considering a few options for a 4 dayer along an LDP but will have to wait for 2016 to do a longer trip (used all my holiday allowance for 2015). Any thoughts on what you might do next?

Excellent to relive the path like this. We walked the path just a couple of months after you did. Not at all the way you did, we booked b&b's and had our luggage transportes as well. Bit of a lazy option by the looks of this video, but I was 17 weeks pregnant at the time, so I had a bit of an excuse. 😄 Thanks for posting this!

The farm at Banks Turret was owned by my Wife’s family just a couple of generations ago, her Grandfather, who was also born there. I now live just west of Banks/Lanercost at Brampton but I originally come from the town of Wallsend at the eastern end of your journey. I actually lived on the wall as a child as the route came through our back yard and out of the front then down to the river.

I'm not sure how heavy my bag was sadly as I don't really weigh them. I did have 4 days worth of food with me but it wasn't too bad. Water was scarce along the middle section sadly so we had to carry a lot, you can get it but you have to go off Trail. I think I carried 3-5 litres each day. Hope you have a great trek. ATB Dean

It feels like such a long time ago that I can't remember the distances sadly, I'd suggest doing it as slowly as you can to enjoy it. The middle section is the best bit of wall and by far the most spectacular scenery wise.

+TraffordReds9 we stayed at some good campsites along the way and there are a few BnB options too. It's a really great walk and I'd definitely do it again myself. Hope you have a great trek if you go and do it. Thanks for watching

Hi Deano, is it me, or did your mates pack change half way through day2? He seemed to go from a huge green Berghaus Vulcan military style bergen to a much smaller red North Face day pack? Also, your other friend (the smaller chap) seems not to be with you anymore? Makes me wonder, if you guys were using a 'support crew' taking gear to the next stop point? Or did your mate just dump the Bergen and most of his original kit? Did the smaller chap throw himself off that bridge into the river perhaps? :-)

Yeah my mate ended up dumping his green bag and switching to a smaller one half way through day two. My other friend the smaller chap was just along with us to walk the first day then went back to Carlisle. Well spotted :-)

We ended up only camping the first night so dumped gear as we had accommodation/hostel for remainder of trip. The plan was to wild camp on night 2 but all will be revealed in the next instalment ;-) haha

This is quite an old video now, would love to go back and walk this route again. Fixed the wind issues over the past 6 years with better microphone protection
