Your system of attaching to the boat assumes there is a soft or sandy bottom that can be stabbed into, so the pole remains vertical. I run into soft mud, and rock. In those cases the pole will run down to a point, but will not stay vertical on their own. So a bracket on the boat is needed. The bracket holds the pole vertical, which in turn prevents it from dragging and letting the boat move.
