your whole place is so neat in tropics we measure the rainfall using the 20 litre buckets with 30cm diameter. most of the time the buckets are full overnight. especially now that the monsoon is over our heads, we measure the rainfall by the level of water against your car. luckily I have Hilux with Tough Dog suspension, which is a few inches higher, and I have a snorkel, which allows my car to survive driving even when the water level is at your car windows. I could see hundreds of cars immobilised and practically irreparable after several days of continuous raining. the situation is very serious as we speak (Jan 2021) nice mini project!
Thanks. Yeah the rain is nothing like that here - except the main highway up north is cut in several places ATM because we are being hit a low from ex tropical cyclone Seth. And the rain has been constant over the last week. 65mm last night here alone. It is not a problem for us unless we get about 200 mm which can happen. My problem is that i film in a tin shed and it gets so noisy I cant speak on camera but I feel for the people who are really affected.
Hello! Great video. We get sometimes 1-4 inches of rain per day here. I'm wondering if, although this may be a very accurate gauge, would it be a bother constantly measuring the overflow from the outer tube into the center measuring tube...since the inner tube doesn't hold much water, it appears. I've used a rather basic Acurite brand gauge mounted to fence post up to this point, but I think with occasional heavy wind another design would be benefitial. Perhaps I've not been getting accurate readings after all. Thanks in advance.
the centre tube holds an inch of rain and because it is a tall cylinder, the divisions are widely spaced apart and this makes it very accurate. it has to be placed a certain distance from buildings and trees etc so wind does not affected it. Occasionally we have to tip the large tube into the inner tube to read it but that is not a prob in the last 2years i have had it. We had the same one as our previous gauge.
I replaced mine with a electronic rain gauge. It worked okay for a year, then started by not showing correct rainfall. I ended up buying another one of these.
I have replaced many components on mine to the exasperation point, so I dumped the whole kit. The most reliable way to predict rainfall and amount is whenever I hang the laundry on the line for the missus. You will find a correlation between the material's absorbency, the importance of the item being dry by a specific time, the intensity and duration of the rain, and you being as far away from the house as possible when it rains. The fellas at the weather station assured me I was right, and the ladies there said we were stark raving bonkers. There is further evidence on YT see THE MAGIC BASKET by Troy Kinne.
The inner tube is marked from 0 to 25mm or imperial 0 to 1 inch and you read it directly off the tube. I can't show you sorry. If you get more rain than that, it overflows into the larger canister, and you just pour it into the inner tube to measure the excess. It can record up to 250mm or 10inches of rain.
