Maayan Lev Honestly nothing prepared me for how terrifying that scene was. Enjoy the experience of it! Let me know what you think! I’m so starved for content from this revival.
Steph Piano it was great. I loved that scene. Side note: I don’t think people realized that the new ending was supposed to be haunting and telling about society and how it delivers justice. No spoilers, but I thought it was a very significant change to the old ending.
The show is always dark. The violence and grit are rooted in the play from which the musical is adapted. It's just that Rodgers and Hammerstein tried to tone them down, but they are still there.
This number is just unsettling. The fact that Curly, supposedly the “good guy” of the show, is callously taunting Judd, an outsider “bad guy”, about his death is just...holy shit. You can hear the audible terrified panic in Judd’s voice, as if he’s breaking down and his tone makes it sound like he’s pleading for Curly to stop. It is then in this production that you are like...”Ok, so who are the bad guys and good guys here? Now I understand the point the creators were trying to make...” God, I wanted to punch Curly in the face during this...
I played Jud in a school production of this show. The irony wasn’t lost on me that the bullied outcast kid was cast as the bullied outcast character. The show was a nightmare, but I got to scream like hell during Lonely Room, so that was a plus.
This song is honestly super chilling especially how cheery he’s singing about convincing this guy to kill himself. Isn’t this guy supposed to be the protagonist like wtf
I know this was 2 years ago but like this song is insane!!! I had listened to it before I saw the show and was like “This songs pretty good in a dark way” but then I saw the song in context and I was shocked afterwards I was like…well I was stunned into silence. This musical is so morally gray and I love it lol
Conrad Stemler True, But with the beat and everything I don’t see how it would be scary? Perhaps deeply sad or even angering. Is it the manipulation that’s scary? Or is it like a revelation thing?
@@Lucy-nw4im The manipulation is scary. The character we have been led to believe is the hero of the story, the one who is right and will win in the end, is convincing his enemy to commit suicide through a song.
Conrad Stemler I suppose, but it feels like an odd inclusion as Curly never faces the consequences of this anywhere in the show. I think it’s sad about how quickly Jud buys into it, and also the fact that’s it’s true. If he did commit suicide, then he would be mourned. Perhaps not as much as Curly implies but it would still attract attention. That’s best represented in Heathers (the film and the musical, which I assume you’ve seen because hasn’t everyone). I suppose I see now that it’s the fact that Curly gets away with this very evil act that’s scary in many ways. While Jud, Who isn’t the best of people in all honestly, gets blamed a lot for his actions.

I found this musical unsettling when I first saw it and that was the traditional film musical when I was young. But when I was older and heard this song and realised the court was cobbled together at the end. I actually saw it just like this new version makes clear.
