My one Oscars gripe is when are they gonna stop making jokes about animation being for kids? Literally none of the shorts were “made for kids” and The Boy and The Heron was rated PG-13. It’s getting old and tired at this point.
A lot like the Oscars themselves. And maybe Hollywood as a whole.
It's disheartening to hear that people still think that animated projects are only for kids to consume. When there are plenty (not enough) of animations rated for adults. I love animation more than live action. I dont know what the harm is in watching what you like, for kids and/or adults. Watching animated works doesn't make you regress. I love to think that it inspires others. From writing a story, aim to work in that field, down to making their own animations.
Yeah invincible is clearly for children, it's a cartoon superhero

As an Haitian who watches your show everyday, BBQ is not the one of the top gang leaders doing the worst, he is the most educated in all of them since he was a former police officer who was going to get framed for murders. The main top gang leader putting the country in unrest name is “Izo”. He has tiktok is a raper and the most driven one because he was the one the broke into the jail and proceeded to do a party for some of them afterways. He has the high powered guns and war drone to oversee where ever he pleases.
Btw Thank you for spreading awareness about Haiti. I started watching your videos in haiti back then, had to leave the country to come to school here. Its not by choice the country is truly beautiful but a lot of forces are at play to keep the country in this situation. Thank you again.
So sorry that you had to go through that, I hope things settle down in Haiti.
Exactly this was more of a people's revolt then anything else. Ofc tho as usual western news paints it as bad and evil cuz they burned drug dealers. Im pretty sure cuz america's habit it empowered cartels to make everyplace a drug den.
Im glad you're safe at least, thankyou for sharing this info! I do want to ask though, you mention izo and said he is a "raper" and i understand English isnt your first language. Do you mean he sexually assaults people or do you mean he makes rap music?
Run. Flee. Get out of Haiti. Haiti failed long before this. Flee to somewhere else in South America (hell, why not try the US) before their borders close.

To add to the Boeing story: There was recently a whistleblower named John Barnett who reported on safety and quality control concerns in the company’s production line who was found dead in his car with an apparent “self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head” before he could finish being questioned about things happening at Boeing for an investigation.

I'm so happy that Boy and the Heron won Best Animated Feature, it was so deserved. More people need to be aware of Studio Ghibli and their trove of classic, beautiful animations. I would have loved to see an acceptance speech from Hayao Miyazaki, he deserves his moment!
Have you seen Robot Dreams?
There is a really good four part documentary on him on NHK . Actually I’ve watched a few documentaries on various subjects. Anyhow check it out . Hayao has done several anime pieces since this came out lol He was retiring ……. A brilliant man and team .

I work in a lab (albeit not in forensics) and it sounds like this woman was cutting corners in a lot of procedures meant to ensure the accuracy and precision of her results. Lab work has a ton of quality control measures, which are admittedly a pain in the ass, but without them we would have no way of knowing if our testing methods or instruments are producing accurate results. There have been many times where I’ve been trying to complete these quality control measures and they keep failing over and over and it is SO tempting to just fudge things because you know your instrument is working fine, but some minor factors is just causing this headache. But you have to solve your problems because although cutting a corner once may not really have much of an effect at all, consistently doing so across multiple quality control measures will just compound issues until your results can become virtually meaningless. So although she wasn’t just making up data, without the quality control, she may as well have been doing so. Lack of proper quality control was also stated to be a potential factor in the Boeing door accident, just underscoring its importance. This system of checks and balances and proper and thorough documentation is the tedious yet necessary backbone of high-quality lab work and anyone willing to constantly ignore them is not cut out for this profession, especially when the results can be the difference between freedom and incarceration or even life and death.
You are absolutely spot on. I'm field service for a pretty large company's chemistry analyzers and without proper calibration and QC, the analyzer is just making an educated guess based on old information.
Exactly. She knew better. I hope that she's held accountable for what she was so obviously comfortable doing.
I respect scientific minded workers so much. The constant strive for professionalism and rigid methodologies deserves respect. If vaccine hesitant people had a tenth of this knowledge there would be a lot more vaccinated people. It's sad that ignorance and misinformation hold so much sway today.
Hey I’m actually so thankful I saw this comment, I’m a chemistry student about to graduate with my Bachelors. Is there any possible way you could help me land a job?? I’m so desperate, the job market is terrible.
I was a little confused by his summary statement of this story. Thank you for your perspective
For the forensic scientist scandal: sadly there's actually precedent for this. There are two women in prison for tampering with drug evidence during their tenure as forensic scientists. One was an addict using the samples at the job to get high as she did her work, the other was fraternizing with prosecution lawyers and not doing the proper processes to get done with things faster. Both of them worked on innumerable cases that had all been called into question, and the state legislature was trying to cover up how bad the situation was.
Eventually this determined lawyer and his team got all the cases they worked on thrown out, but countless people had been locked up for years on tampered evidence. There's actually a netflix documentary on it. Hopefully those cases will set the tone for how this new situation is handled
The Beatles are my favorite band of all time. Knowing that Paul got THE bass back is so heartwarming to me. There is a moment in the documentary Get Back where Paul is asked why he isn't playing his Rickenbacker bass (the one he is playing in the Hello Goodbye video) and is playing the Hofner, he just smiles and says "I like this one." I really recommend that documentary as it is so fascinating for any Beatles fan and even for anyone who isn't. Also, Phil, you should look into the new Beatles song "Now and Then" and how it was created and the whole story behind it. Super interesting.

@@Ruffles2012 Probably something personal and embarrassing, that she didn't want discussed endlessly in the media. Like pelvic floor repair after bearing three pregnancies. Something interesting to add: John Barnett- the Boeing whistleblower who worked for them for 30+ years, was found dead in his truck in a hotel parking lot right before his deposition. They said the gunshot wound seemed self inflicted, but personally I'm a bit suspicious. Convenient for Boeing since this guy was the one trying to make the planes safer and they pushed back on him throughout the years and when he tried doing it all in writing before this whole recall happened they told him he needs to make the corrections 'orally' not wanting this kind of thing in writing. Rest in peace John Barnett, no matter how it happened, he just wanted people to be safe.
That Bass story was a breath of fresh air - I'll always take the non-soul-crushing news stories!
At the risk of sounding weird, the relationship between a musician and their respective instruments is a deep one. As a musician who has had instruments stolen, the McCartney story warmed my heart. The last instrument I had stolen was a guitar my aunt found in a dumpster. It was a strange Japanese built guitar, the brand, I had never heard of. Of course it did break my heart when it happened. I had recorded tons of tracks with it and was like losing an old friend. That being said, I also had a guitar that I never thought I'd see again, returned to me after 15 years. The joy of that was overwhelming. Congratulations to Paul for getting his old friend back and total respect to those who tracked it down!
Fellow musician here.
Just to clarify, URA pussy. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
I was in a plane that almost crashed when i was about 6 years old. That kind of trauma leaves you with devastating effects... i've had panic attacks ever since. A woman on the flight had a heart attack. That's not to say anything of the people who've perished in crashes. My heart goes out to everyone affected by Boeing's complete disregard for human safety.
Yea, it's horrifying. My grandfather died in a crash and my Grandma, who wasn't even on the flight, has had a crippling fear of flying ever since. She has never stepped food on a plane since and will rather drive in her car for days at a time to get somewhere than spend a few hours in the air. You cannot overstate how severely something like this impacts everyone involved. Of course you can never make something 100% safe, there's always room for human error or freak accidents, but the least you can do is follow all the safety protocols to the letter and have quality control to be absolutely sure you've done everything you can, so that the risk is at least as small as humanly possible.
@@No-ue5pi Its very ironic that she trusts a car over a commercial airliner. The odds of you dying in a plane are much smaller than in a car.
The weirdest thing about happiness and phone use is how many of my friends don't have hobbies because they don't have time, but they spend every other sentence saying "I saw a tik tok..."
I’m from Africa. I know those countries and people who live there… Zimbabwe happier than Kenya? That study is so wrong on so many levels.
I have this issue so badly. But when I try to work on my hobbies, it feels like work.
I think it’s important to remember that hobbies require similar energy units as work. While I’m very much down for learning to limit social media use, a lot of the time people are using TikTok et al when they’re so exhausted they’d probably be just staring off into space as an alternative
It’s about the mental/physical energy a task requires and all of the additional time that ends up being required for it.
I’m not really someone who can scroll TikTok for hours, but my version of that is reading (usually as an ebook since I can turn it on dark mode if I don’t want to look at a white screen). I don’t consider it a “hobby” because it’s often pretty mindless media consumption, just like watching tv or TikTok is for others. For me, reading takes basically no energy, and I can do it regardless of if I feel exhausted, sick, etc. It requires no clean up, prep work, supplies, or time spent driving to a location.
However, I don’t always have the energy to engage in hobbies (like baking, d&d, or the various arts & crafts I’m into). Hobbies are often expensive, create messes I have to clean up, might require socializing with people, are more physically taxing, etc. Those aren’t inherently bad, but they do mean that I’m not always up for engaging in a hobby after a busy day of dealing with responsibilities.
Thanks for sharing the Paul McCartney story. It genuinely made me smile. It reminded me of when Billy Corgan was reunited with the guitar from the Gish era a few years ago.
The Taliban story just feels painfully interchangeable with how North Korea handles it's internet and general image of "everything is totally fine here".
That's every dictatorship
This type of propaganda in favor of the Taliban is also being pushed in media as propaganda in favor of banning TikTok in the US.
Don't forget Saudi Arabia using influencers and sports washing to try and distract from human rights abuses.
Its also hilarious to see people criticizing the taliban and then in the next breath yelling "free Palestine" like bro take a good look at Afghanistan, Hamas is just like the Taliban and they’ll jump at the chance to turn the country into Afghanistan 2.0
Or Palestinians
Phil got me over here freaking out that I missed Mother's Day. For my US peeps it's on May 12th, you're good.

The happiness index report is so weird to me considering that Sri Lanka is somehow ranked 2nd even though we went through the worst economic crisis in our ENTIRE history just under 2 years ago, flooded the presidential home, driving the then president out of power and somehow we rank #2!!!?? what? who did they poll? the politicians of sri lanka?
can this also be linked to the reason why we see so much tolerance for corrupt politicians since our nations independence and the reason why sri lanka does not go though major economic/social changes because we get so good at being flexible at adapting to terrible conditions and staying there?
Good to note that this is not the UN happiness index we usually talk about that takes into account the economic situation, health, safety, education etc. Of the country in addition to looking at emotions. This study seemed to focus on emotions, and mental wellbeing/strengths only. And it has quite interesting questions like resilience - ofc people that are battling a war or a crisis have had to overcome obstacles and have gotten to find themselves resiliant, whereas someone in a much more privileged and safe situation may feel like they crumble over the smallest set back in their life => don’t feel resilient => worse points.
That's the one story I found odd, I looked at the UN happiness for Australia as I am Australian (which also is why I found it odd), the story claimed that Australia is one of the unhappiest countries where the UN happiness index says Australia is like the 12 happiest country
same with Australia, though in the opposite direction! I'm surprised we are so low...sure we have a housing crisis and some flooding the last few years, but I was under the impression our country was much happier on average....
That or... people simply lie on the surveys
Consider it's self 22:22 reported.
I read that the main reason of unhappiness amongst developing countries is that we compare to the western developed countries.
When your priority is basic needs being fulfilled, you don't have much time to worry about "being happy", you're just glad you're alive and have food.

The lack of mention of Akira Toriyama's passing and the MASSIVE worldwide reaction (enough so that apart from The Boy and The Heron, the Oscars plain disappeared) is disappointing.
Phil. I appreciate your news, thank you for your time.
I do photography as a hobby and people are blowing this way out of proportion. What they did was take several shots, layer them on top of each other, and then mask in the best parts from each image (ex: some shots will have better facial expressions than others). The big mistake they made was refocusing between each shot, which will cause the images not to align correctly and lead to depth of field artifacts (the blurry stuff) that people discovered.
I am shocked that there wasn’t any mention of the Akira Toriyama death.
The internet collectively mourned the loss of him, yet celebrated his life and impact in ways that nearly rival when Princess Diana died.
It really surprising seeing how both irl and in social media it was the main topic of discussion this weekend, even if you are not a dragon ball or anime fan it was impossible to miss

As a musician (yeah yeah gag) the story about Paul McCartney’s guitar really moved me. There really is no replacing your favorite instrument. Even if you get a better one, there’s always something about your favorite that just feels right. I know I would be devastated if I lost my first trumpet, and I’m so happy Paul McCartney was able to get his guitar back. That moment must have felt incredible.
Happy to hear the bass story. Good to hear interesting news stories that aren't sad or political.
A major problem with forensic science, and particularly foresinc scientists, is the fact they work with the prosecution in most cases. Particularly in criminal cases. They are not unbiased. They know the cops. They the DA and rest of the prosecution. They tend to be on friendly terms because they deal with them often.
The prosecution wants to get conviction. Convictions progresses one's career. The forensic people know this. If your data gets convictions then the prosecution will seek you out more. Which can help your career and/or company. It's a horrible feedback loop, but it's one that exist.
Something tells me when they're looking up the mental health stuff. They ignored Sudan, the Congo, and obviously most of all Palestine places right now that are being tortured, how surprising😐

As a Haitian American, it is very painful to see my family's country being held hostage by several different countries, including the United States. The people of Haiti have been stripped of their rights to make decisions for themselves since the assassination of President Jovenel and it seems like just about everyone in or adjacent to power was in on the plot in some way or another. There is literally no one the people can trust. My father, who emigrated to the US in the late 70s, cannot even bring himself to speak on the situation otherwise he just ends up in tears. It's very sad. Thank you for covering the situation, Phil.
Which countries are holding Haiti hostage.
@@matchstyx3460 In the last 48 hours, the US, Canada and other Caribbean countries have taken it upon themselves to host a meeting without Haiti’s current prime minister (who just announced his resignation a few hours ago) to come up with plans on how to bring elections back into the country. If that’s not an indication that the Haitian people are actively being dictated by external forces, thus being “held hostage,” I don’t know what is. The US in particular has been puppeteering Haiti for decades, especially since Clinton was an ambassador (look up how the Clinton family single-handedly decimated Haiti’s rice economy and left the country worse off with their policies and how they’ve only apologized and have made no efforts to correct their errors). Yes, Haiti is rife with corrupt politicians but they’re also in bed with the US and other outside forces.
USA is not holding haiti hostage ffs no ones is willing to take accountability for how messed up their country is anymore. You're a good example why America needs to stop sending aid to so many other countries, effing ungrateful.

That's not the definition of the word "forgot." You simply didn't know to begin with.
Musician here! Paul McCartney to this day has been one of my all time favorite shows I ever had the privilege of seeing while in music school. Hearing the story about his Hofner being returned to him brings a slight bit of just awe at the scale of this project. I know if something like that were to ever happen to the bass purchased for me by my grandpa, I would do the exact same as instruments like those are one of a kind and hold a huge sentimental value for a life time. Thanks for change of pace with this story instead of crushing my soul for the last decade+ 🙂
As a bass player, thank you for covering the story about Paul McCartney's Höfner. This was actually a really big story in the bass player community. I love each of my basses equally and would be devastated if any of them were lost. After playing them for so long they become a part of you. To be united with your first after so long must be an incredible feeling for Paul.
That's probably the best ad read for Seed so far. Definitely an improvement on older ones. But I'll still wait until more trials are actually done rather than in progress alone.
I remember picking up a gig job about 10 years ago, ended up setting up Paul McCartneys' dressing room, and was able to watch the entire show from the floor. It is, and always be, one of my favorite memories/concert I've been to.
I find it really interesting that the Taliban is now attempting to change its image. However, I can't help but think whether or not they know that they'll never change people's minds, especially people who knew someone that was deployed in Afghanistan.
With enough propaganda any mind can be changed. Just look at what's happening in Israel.
They're only doing it cause they're economy sucks and they need tourism money
So long as they treat women the way they do, nobody should be in any kind of favor to them

As a (former) musician I really connect with the McCartney story. I played trombone from 5th grade all the way through college and though I upgraded to newer shinier trombones I still kept the one that got me started. wat what, how do you shower, watch and drink at the same time?
The day I had an ice cold cider in a hot shower was the best day
@justind4615 that's what I was saying lmao
Crazy how people haven’t heard of waterproof phone cases or multitasking lmao
I really thought phil was gonna talk about Akira Toriyama passing
Hey Phil, I wanted to read some of the sources, and they're not in the description anymore??
Thank you for all the work you do... so we can have free news. Lol. Seriously, you do amazing and thorough work.
Make sure you diversity your news sources! I use phil to see what I should look into. Much love to Phil but he (and his staff) definitely have their biases.
Basically r/all/top but in video
Sooo.... am I the only US father and husband that went to double check the date of Mother's Day when they heard the Kate Middleton story. I didn't know there was a different day in the UK. As an aside Happy Mother's Day to my friends across the pond.
I also had to pause it and double check that I didn't miss mother's Day. It's May 12th in the United States this year in case anyone's wondering.
I didn't know it until I moved to the UK a few years back. Same with the fact that Canada also celebrates Thanksgiving but in October!
I get that each time as a Pole living in UK.
I treat UK's as a 1st warning, US' 2nd and then comes May 26 for us. :,)
Have you heard of Brazilian Valentine's Day being in June?
Its not just Uk. Its most of Europe.
Another American thinking the world revolves around America
2:50 anyone notice that the bricks seen through the car window don't match the outside bricks above the car? What's up with that?
Man, I've always been curious about what happened to that bass. I had no idea there was this huge campaign. Really awesome to see that it was found.
That bass story was needed, Phil. Thank you for covering it. I needed a little happy cry today!
Genuinely appreciate the bass story. Very cool & a shaft of light in a darkening world.
I love that Macca got his original bass back. I'd also love to hear what it sounds like today, it'd be neat if Paul recorded a song with it.
I love that the statement on the Hofner guitar for Paul MacCartney was dated February 14 - Valentine’s Day. 😀
I can only hope the video was finished before the news of Toriyama's passing was made public. Weird to not include it
24:00 why not contact the bass company and ask for another one??
You know its a slow news day when both the Oscars AND the Royals are in it
Thanks you for the Paul McCarthy part of you video. I needed the good vibe, think about making it a daily thing. One good news change the day for anyone.
Yo, thanks for that sweet little highlight for Sir Paul's missing Hofner! I don't know how long I've been in love with the Beatles, only that I'm pretty sure I knew all the words to "She Loves You" long before I entered pre-school in the late-80's; and as a former teenage bass student, Paul McCartney was my hero from the start! On top of being one of the single greatest songwriters of any era, his incredible melodic bass lines that are distinct but complimentary to the singer. It warmed my heart to hear his iconic guitar was finally returned, and I can't wait to see if he's able to use it once again. :)
Philip defranco not covering the death of one of the most influential mangaka and creator of dragon ball is insane
There was so much news today. He should have made time to mention it. Oh well.
@@rustinusti it's actually getting bad as in right now lmao
RIP Akira Toriyama thier will never be anyone else like you
Casey Lee Williams is the vocalist on most of not all of the RWBY soundtrack. Because RWBY is currently between seasons, I'm not completely surprised but a bummer for her to find out that way since she and her dad have been on the music for that show since day 1.
What?
@@moustachio05 this was in regards to the person who found out about rooster teeth shutting down over Twitter. It was mentioned in Yesterday Today
@@moustachio05 You're going to have to elaborate on your confusion. There's nothing here to "what?" over.
To my understanding, she's not an employee, she's a contractor doing the music. And on top of that, RWBY was effectively cancelled anyway because they had that big "greenlight volume 10" campaign, basically begging for fan support to let the show keep going. And it didn't go that well.
@@flux_caseyMakes sense. Still a bummer about vol 10 though. I was kinda looking forward to figuring out how they were gonna follow all the weirdness that was vol 9.
Phones at 11 years old is wild. I didnt get one till I was 15 and it was when the touch screen phones still had buttons
okay what is that end credits song for the BB merch, i need to know cuz i want to listen to the whole thing
I always look forward to the news from Phil. It's been a day. This marks the end lol
Soooo sloooowwwwwww. Talks like he's on promethazine
@@BassLove42 you know you can adjust playback speed instead of complaining? Fix your own problems.
@Bea-a-deer Just listen again, put 2 an 2 together from the last couple of videos where he said he needed to slow down. I guarantee, this audio is mixed slower, then graduates up.
12:50 the collapse of silicon valley has made me wonder about how many people got away with lying their way to “success”, it’s horrific.
The bass McCartney story was such a nice add in thanks Phil
Thanks for the smile at the end there Phil.
Catherine cant win can she. If she recovers in private thats wrong, if she breaks cover thats wrong. Its ridiculous
She didnt "Break the cover" Someone named "C" posted a heavily photoshoped image of her, and then someone else released a blurry side shot.
Thats how you make suspicion
It's more so how they fumbled this whole thing that's weird about it
It would have been better if they had said nothing at all rather than these vague stuff
I dont think anything has gone on, but the fact that they have messed it up this badly is just bizarre

Hi Phil, hope you had a good weekend
I miss heard the first part of the happiness segment and I thought I heard “the United Kingdom citing there food…” I busted out laughing then realizing you said “mood”
Me: no clue about anything but seeing a new philly upload. I'm here for it.
