1 Sheet of Plywood Collapsible Platform
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 кві 2021
- I thought it would be a fun design challenge to use only one 4’x8’ sheet of plywood and still have everything I wanted in an SUV bed. It certainly is not the easiest build but it just might be the most satisfying. The bed expands and collapses and with the folding headrest the platform is 6 feet long. The table slides out for easy meal prep and the whole thing is super easy to take in and out of the car. We’ve already taken it on a few road trips and it’s proven a great way to sleep in the SUV.
This particular build is for a 2014 Honda CRV. Check out the .pdf for all measurements.

Probably the most unique sleeping system on UA-cam. The fact you used one sheet of plywood is impressive.
Thanks Ed! Plywood is expensive these days. I figured why not give it a shot.
@@MattTheDesigner It's very cool, the simplest solutions are the cleanest looking and by far the best. Tiny note on pocket screws, they are useful when you don't have access to other side, but if you do, the other way is stronger.
UA-cam is the next best thing to having a lifetime of experience. Thanks to everyone who shares.
There’s never been a time like this in history. Pretty cool.
My partner and I wanted to build a bed for our 2016 CRV. We needed my dads help because he’s handy. He wasn’t really keen on the idea but he came across your video and he was hooked. He printed your plans, brought them to Home Depot and was really committed. We plan to use it this weekend for the first time, just waiting for our trifold mattress to arrive. Thanks again!
Cool! Post it somewhere when you’re done at let me know.
Cool! Post it somewhere when you’re done at let me know.
Oh man that's so cool! Hope that it works out as well as the one in the video. Have an awesome weekend!!!
Two years later and am just finding this gem! I am a one handed builder so I’m having to make a lot of adaptations in the build process and loads of mistakes but this was the first plan/video that actually seemed obtainable. Thanks so much!
Hey Michael, that's awesome....do you have your own you tube channel? If not then maybe you should......One Handed Builder would be a great name for it :)
You’re funny Brother, “I didn’t know how to but I watched a bunch of UA-cam videos” … and here I am watching you!….thanks for your efforts, my college daughter is ecstatic with her new build…thanks to you 🙏🏻
UA-cam has all the answers! Glad I could help y’all out!
This is THE BEST DESIGN EVER 👏👏👏👏👏
Congrats, you managed to show this good solution in a short, no boring video.
You gave us a FREE PDF FOR IT, I love you!
I’ve been looking for something like this for months! Thank you so much. Might make some adjustments but overall will follow what you did. Thanks again
JUst brilliant Matt. I have watched this a few times now and also the 2.0 version. I think your explanations and logical thought process sync with most people. Thanks a bunch mate, cheers from Oz.
Only a few hours of Cinema 4D? Disney must hire you.
Haha! It's all straight lines. As soon as you start adding curves and cutting holes in things it get's way more complicated.
Apparently, other than the trial, there are no free versions of Cinema 4D anymore. Fortunately, freecad is now almost ready for that 1.0 release.
I absolutely love how you research UA-cam videos to find out how to do things!!! I do too. And giving the links to the videos you used is extremely helpful! Thanks!
Outstanding design. Awesome video! You are brilliant.
Love you're into ! Youre so loving and caring ! Thanks for all you do for us ! ❤
This is by far the best one I've found for my Toy Highlander SUV. Thanks a bunch.
No problem Napasak! It was lots of fun to make.
Does it feel level in the Highlander or did you need to modify it?
@@Robocalypse0101, no, it's not level for my 2013. It's incline higher at the second row seats when folded down. I simply take them off and have so much more space for stuffs.
Great design and appropriate plugs for resources. I especially like the ramp and wedge.
Glad you like it!
I followed along with your instructions and video. It is a great design and very simple. The fact that it is in two sections cuts down on the hassle of loading and unloading it.
I was stuck for so long trying to think how I'd like to build a sleeper platform for my Jeep. Following your idea allowed me to get it done and now I'm happy to have an ideal platform for trips
That’s great! I’m glad it worked out for you.
Thanks for sharing this and including measurements! You did an excellent job of explaining things too. I just bought a 2014 Honda CRV and have been looking at different options. Yours is practically perfect. I will use this with some modifications. I want to be able to leave the smaller 40 section of the 60/40 rear seats up but have the option of a wider platform if I want a larger sleeping area. It will need a little more wood for a second set of guide rails but no big deal.
Oh man that sounds cool! Would love to see it when you’re done.
Thank you for sharing . You made it look easy and fun to build this platform.
Super Thanks Matt! I made this (with some modifications to fit my model) and it’s awesome. Great design, smart! Fun to make! Goodbye tent, hello warm car sleeping:)
Welcome to car camping!
Awesome! I’ve been looking for months for a build like this. Just finished modifying it slightly to fit my Honda Pilot.
we do live in amazing times. reminds me to be more grateful. Thank you
This is so awesome! just started doing some research because my daughter has agreed to help me build out my SUV for camping...she's my "handy-woman". She will be so excited that I found this awesome build! Thank you!!!
M J Rodriguez glad I could help!
Great job on the video Matt! Thanks for making it.
Thank you matt, loved the spirit of this video - like so many of us, just humble people trying to learn and figure out things as we go. Appreciate your effort in putting this together.
love the honesty at the end
Well freaking done! I really aprreciate a.) the single piece of plywood and b.) the humility / "i dont know figure it out" attitude you bring to the youtube woodworking sphere
Thanks Earth All Night! I like your channel!
@@MattTheDesigner Ditto. Looks like we are hangin ina similar wheel house here
@@kendellharbin Wheel… House… Pun intended? Haha. I think you’re right.
It’s awesome how you credited your sources! 🙌
Thanks for the video you sold me with the PDF.. Liked and will now follow great job.
I loved your video and used some of the ideas to make my own platform for my Forrester. I also now love pocket holes!! Thanks Matt! Yet to test it out as we hit COVID lockdown here in Oz!
That’s great! Isn’t youtube amazing?? Haha
Hi, I'm all over your channel today. I know you made an updated and improved version with drawers, but I think I'm going to make a modified version of this for my Cube as a cheap lil starter project while I figure out if car camping is for me. Can't beat the cost of 1 sheet of plywood!
Thanks again for the video and the free plans!
Perfect one out of all the 100s of videos that I saw till now.. will get it done for my SUV also.. looks simple and cute
Glad I could help Satish!
Great folding bed, thanks 😊
Great video! I agree; it is the definitely the most satisfying build I have watched to date, and I have watched a lot. :-) Thanks for sharing.
From humble beginnings, to where you are now! Still enjoyable videos, and definitely looking forward to seeing what's next! 🤠
Don't forget to update your playlists, since you've done several projects for your rig! 😏
All the content and presentation was first class .Loads of good ideas thought through.
Awesome, build. I like the hinges. This looks great.
Dude, thanks so much for this!!! Just built one for my 2005 CRV with some minor changes. Used your 2nd build's base and then fitted some runners for the tabletop and covered the whole thing in interior trim, less glue, no pocket screws and hides the screws, then secured with 2 location pins. Stoked!
Sweet! I was hoping people would take my ideas and make it their own. Thanks for sharing.
What height did you need for the legs to clear the rear seats? I sort of thought about 36cm for my 05 Cr-v.
Also the front and back legs can be the same height right? As the floor is flat
Do you have some pics?
Im trying to find a build to fit for my 2009 Honda CRV.
@@bnosluoc4830 sorry, just saw this now. I used an extra sheet and made legs the same length as base section, i.e. created a box for storage, so no open sides and opted with either 400mm/450mm in order to clear the back seat when folded/use the folded back seats as support for the middle section. The headrest section folded out with piano hinge and I can set it to lean up against front seats, like a day bed, or lie flat for when sleeping, without building any additional supports.
@@silkefletcher1822 i do but not sure how to share on here 🙅♀🙈😄.
Fantastic process and video. Good job
Wow, I am impressed. I don’t have the skills or tools to make it like this, but this gave me good ideas to make a bit of more simple edition of this.
Thanks! There is for sure an easier way to do this haha. Good luck and I hope you share you project with us. :)
Дуже дякую за ідею. Ваш варіант просто чудовий, мені він підходить. Я постараюсь його повторити. Бажаю успіхів вам у вашій праці, гарного вам дня.
Best one I seen so far. Very well done.
Great video! Thank you for sharing
Nicely done! Love the hinges at the front - we're currently in progress of upgrading our Honda Pilot microcamper to take out the seats and build a living room and sleep area. Thanks for sharing!!
Thank Chris! You project sounds cool. I'll SUB to see how you fit a living room in there!
@@MattTheDesigner haha - it’s all about space reuse :-)
Fantastic!
Nice! Will come back to this in January when we buy our Sprinter! Thanx!!
Please share how you apply this to a sprinter. I’m hoping to upgrade some day.
You did some awesome work there, love the design of that!
This is so amazing! Great job.
Well done!
Thanks very much for making this video.
Like the Idea and the instructions.
Dude. Your whole pipeline is so good. I love your branding, your website, the PDF PLANS! finally someone that actually measures things and takes notes. Thank you so much for this!
My GF is coming to Canada, and I'm gonna take her on a 3 week look of Alberta/BC. I've got about 5 days now that I can build this for us to REALLY make it a unique trip. Thank you.
If there is ever anything data related (aanlysis, ML, AI-Bots) I might be able to help you with, let me know. I'd love to share my gratitude through my skills.
Thanks man! Sound like an awesome trip. Have fun!
Правильный подход,концепция и воплощение! Лайк!
Brilliantly done!
Nice! Cheers from Brazil!
This was inspiring in an unintentional way. This guy is so handy and can do so much and then has to look up how to install a car battery. He really is just a normal guy doing his thing and learning. He doesn't know everything but he is teaching the things he does know.
Also he palmed a battery. Even if it is a 24 series, that is some good grip strength.
Palmed a battery! 🤣 thanks for stopping by.
this is an incredibly underappreciated and rare skill these days, to be able to teach one's self something. there is information for everything you could ever want to know on the internet in various formats, text/audio/video, explained at all different skill levels; there is really no excuse for ignorance. but most would rather watch 60 second or shorter videos about conspiracy theories and end of the world politics and celebrities wearing less every year (with the notable exception of 2010 lady gaga wore meat)
I loved this!
So utterly impressive! ❤
This is absolutely amazing you’re so smart and talented
Everything about this video is awesome Congrats
Just what I was looking for! Thanks so much.
Genial!!!!
Eu estava procurando por um projeto de cama que fosse legal pra fazer na minha CRV 2010 e vi que você vez algo muito bem montado e interessante.
Obrigado por compartilhar!!!
This is exactly what I was looking for, and wanted for my Tucson! Thank you!
Enjoy!
I have watched a ton of these types of videos .I like yours the best. It's not over built lighter weight AKA Better gas millage .Instead of wood draws long plastic cover totes would be perfect . Thanks for the awesome video my friend .
This is great Matt
Thanks for this!
It turned out great, congratulations🙂🇵🇱
🙂 great work!👏
Thanks for sharing the plan!!!
This is so godamn genius. I'm making this for my hatchback Mazda 3. Thank youuu!!!
My brother in-law used to have one of those. That’s gunna be cool!
Great video Matt! Love your style and as a Honda CRV owner looking for a build to copy, this may just be what I needed!
CRVs unite!!
Thanks, Matt.
Thank you so much! I was searching and searching for a collapsable design I could leave in my Jeep! Can't wait to get this built (by someone else). lol Enjoy your adventures!! :)
👍🏼 Would love to see how it turns out.
So so perfect finally the best bed I've seen so far for my honda crv thank u so much now someone to build me 1
Give it a try Debbie!!
I recently moved to a south american country without evilbay and all that good stuff. These really ARE amazing times. Sooner or later I am going to build something similar for my used old 4Runner. Without the "ordering the parts over night" part though. Thanks for the inspiration!
Sounds cool! I see a lot of people using 4Runners for this kind of thing. Where in South America?
great design ! Thanks vm for sharing
This is Awesome 👍👍
Matt. This is the best I have seen. Damn. Great work.
Awesome video, thanks for inspiration...!
Fantastic! Thank you for sharing.
Nice job dude. I've been collecting ideas for my recently acquired 03 GMC Yukon. This looks like the best idea yet. Thx
Thanks! Would love to see what you end up with.
Absolutely brilliant, Matt!
Thanks Antonio!
Thank Matt, I followed suit and had a bed on my Mazda CX5 ^^
Post a vid!
This is a very nice design, thanks
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This is awesome.
You should take orders and if you do I'll be first in line. Without a doubt the best simple design on youtube.Awesome.
I appreciate RayRay. Thanks for watching!
Excellent
Gold... pure gold, dude! 👍
Pocket holes are the bomb!!
Thank you for sharing this idea. I am making one with basic idea for my mazda!
what a gem! thank you!
I'm going to use this video for my Jeep Cherokee! Thanks!
Awesome! I've been using it about a year now and it's been great. Post it when it's done!
Very nicely done project. I will be doing something to my CRV within the next month
Thank you Mr. Hiker!
Your video is so well made. I enjoy watching it.
Thanks @MTBikeBO
Holy moly! I’ve been looking for a build just like this for months now. It didn’t show up in searches cause I was using Honda CRV build in the search. This is the best build video by far and the fact you included measurements is insane. Thanks so much Matt. Can’t wait to get started on mine.
Thank Timmy! Your channel is SICK. I subbed. Let me know how your build goes.
@@MattTheDesigner Nice dude. I’ll keep ya posted on how the build goes!
I ended up getting 1/2" plywood on accident. Did you feel like the 3/4" was sturdy? When I built it out and tried laying on it, I noticed it dipped quite a bit in the middle. Wondering if it's worth re-trying with 3/4"
@@TimmyLodhi I haven’t noticed any flexing on ours. I used 3/4 and it was hardwood plywood. I’m not sure if that makes a different in strength. I just chose it because it looked good.
@@MattTheDesigner I feel ya. I should’ve gone with 3/4. Might need to give it another shot 😂
Really great...Inspiring to do something by ourself
Very nice mate
I don’t own a CR-V but I love the bed! Subscribed.
"We're living in amazing times." Agreed. ☮
Love it!
