Oh my god.....FINALLY!! I've been looking for better info about this setup for like 2 years!!! There's so many ways to set this up wrong and positive grid hasn't really given proper instructions regarding an amp setup except, "just............plug it in......"
Good video. If one is in the market to play electric guitar, you don't need a guitar amp, or a head with a cab. You can use powered PA speaker. The bigger the speaker / watts the more expensive. Some have battery backup and bluetooth / usb so you can load up backing tracks while you jam. If you're already a musician with this setup, then of course this is a great way to get jamming without buying tons of extra cables and pedals. I recently bought Bias FX 2 on my $20 Mac Mini I got from a thrift store. It's amazing how far we've come in technology. Take care my friend.
Thank you for explaining this I’ve been looking for an answer to this question for some time now and this is the first response I’ve seen from anyone that even addresses the question.
So just to recap what you are doing....Jam Up Pro does not allow you to bypass the cab modeling within the app, so when you plug in to your amp through the ipad it's basically like playing through two amps giving it the simulated sound? And then when you turn bypass on in BIAS, it's the equivalent of using the effects of Jam Up with your physical cab? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still trying to get the hang of this!!
Close. I take an amp in BIAS, disable it, and then import it into JamUp so I can use the FX available in JamUp. Without disabling it, it is more like running a mic'd speaker sound into another speaker, which is why it sounds pretty bassy/muddy.
wow great .someone finally showed how to contact amp mod, like BIAS into a live amp cab....double checking if i got this right you plug out of the ipad into the effects loops of a amp head,.than turn of amp cab in BIAS
Hi, I have BIAS on my desktop pc. Could I use that to run through my amp? It has 2 channels, one for clean and one for OD. I think I tried this with guitar rig before, but it was really bad. I'm using a Behringer Guitar link to connect to my pc.
Oh and where should the master and clean volumes, the iPad's volume and gain level on an irig hd's levels be at for the best possible tone? I've experimented with all of them and I'm still not 100% sure which configuration is the best for playing live.
Evan Abbott Set the iRig input level first - you want to make sure it doesn't clip when you play hard or palm mute. I usually keep the iPad at two or three clicks down from full volume and usually have bias or other amp modeler at about 80% volume. Then use the amp master volume to control your overall volume.
Nice setup.. I have a Marshal DSL 40C amp and just got Bias FX desktop for my laptop. I also ordered iRig Pro DUO2 for my hook ups.. but I need a little help... What cables will I need to get to run the iRig into my amp? Part numbers would be awesome if you have them available but if not I understand. Thanks bro!
+MrKZizzle With that interface it's super easy - just run a regular 1/4" guitar cable from one of the Duo2 outputs into the return jack on the Marshall and you should be ready to rock!
There are quite a few too choose from, I use the Apogee Jam but there are several other choices - check out some of them here: www.sweetwater.com/c1062--iPad_iPhone_Guitar_Interfaces_FX
Kind of an off-topic question here, but I'd really love an answer. I notice that you're using a JTV-89. The palm-muting sounds very crisp, so crisp that I might even consider buying one again. The original turn off for me was that palm-muted chords sounded muffled if the guitar modelling was turned on. So my question to you is whether or not you were using the modelling when you recorded this? Were you using the physical magnetic pickups and just have your guitar down-tuned anyway? Thanks very much in advance. Excellent explanation on how to turn off the cab voicing feature too.
It was the magnetics. My band tunes to drop Db so what I did was setup the Variax to that tuning and I use the modeling tuning to get back up to standard for the rare times I need it. The palm muting still leaves something to be desired for heavy stuff - though I think it is still good for lighter rock and blues style palm muting. Hope that helps!
I'm noticing a bug with Bias FX with Bias on iPad Mini 2. My idea was to run a dual rig, one amp without cab emulation, the other with cab emulation. Then pan each amp far left and right, split one to poweramp & cab via the stereo cable, the other to the FoH PA with cab emulation. Unfortunately when I edit an amp in Bias and import it to Bias FX, it replaces both amps in the dual amp setup. :( Have you experienced this?
I haven't tried that complex of a setup but sounds like a bug for sure. One work around might be to work on your BIAS amps within another simpler preset. Once you have the amps dialed in where you want them, go to your dual preset and swap out the amps being used with the updated models.
My PC guitar interface is a Behringer UMC204HD that I use for an array of VST sims on PC that I'd like to use as preamps. Currently, the interface 2 ''OUT'' (1/4'') go into studio monitors L & R. Questions: 1) Can I just buy a ''Y'' (3 male 1/4'' ends) split cable to plug the interface's 2 ''OUT'' into an amplifier FX loop ''IN'' or do I need some kind of rectifying circuit placed in-between to correct for voltage/current/impedance? 2) How do you close the amplifier's FX loop? With a reverb/delay/EQ pedal in the amplifier's ''FX loop ''OUT''?
Hi Dipendra, I connected BIAS to my ISP Stealth Power Amp but did not get the expected result (lot of fuzz), does the "CAB SIM off change" also apply to a Power Amp or do i need to tweak more on BIAS or JAmup Pro?. Thanks
Technically, the power amp is still being modeled even with the cab sim turned off. That amp should be pretty transparent though so you shouldn't really be getting any extra fuzz. How does it sound compared to using the cab sim on and just headphones?
night and day difference, thanks for sharing. Can you go from guitar-amp input - fx send - interface line in - bias fx (No cab modeling) - line out - buffered effects return into power amp - speaker?
Awesome video man, I noticed you said you use the HD500 with your rig. do you use it with bias or jamup? I have both and I was wondering if the pod can be used to control the pedals in jamup. If you're using a rig like this, I would love to know! thanks!
I haven't tried using the HD500 with BIAS or JamUp since I don't have a midi interface for the iPad. I imagine it should work for at least patch changes if not for pedal on/off. I have used the iRig BlueBoard a bit at home and it works ok but I've found that lag between switching is too long to use for live use (it's fine for home though).
Would you say that the ipad's audio output (headphone jack) has inferior or superior quality to a usb direct out? (I'm concerned about a loss of quality when inputting into the effects return)
You may get a touch more noise using the headphone out but I think it's pretty usable as is. Depending on your amp you may need to use a DI box to match the levels to your amp correctly.
I think it comes down to personal preference. Amp+Cab gives a more traditional "real amp" feel, especially when jamming in your room etc. Direct to PA will give you more consistency between what you hear and what you might run to the main PA for a live show. I've used the Alto TS112A with various models and it does sound really good but sometimes I still just like to use a real amp too, so I'm always going back and forth depending on my mood.
Is there a reason in particular you chose to not disable the power amp and transformer emulation since you are running it into a genuin power amp? Seems redundant?
tbpantsreapertb When I made this video the power amp disable wasn't an option. If I were to do this today I would keep power amp modeling on at lower volumes and disable power amp modeling at higher volumes.
Thanks for such an informative video, how would you say the effects from Bias compare to quality stomp boxes when played through your amp? I was going to buy a couple of really nice pedals but I'm now considering just doing this..
BIAS actually doesn't have effects. There is BIAS FX which does (it doesn't let you create your own amps though). The effects in BIAS FX are great - I think it's a great value, especially if you already have an iPad.
Ah i see! Have you used any of these effects through an amp? I just really want to know how it sounds because im thinking of making a virtual pedal board with an iPad.. Thanks for getting back to me!
Sounds wise I think it will hold up well live (either through an amp or direct to PA) - the biggest challenge is dealing with preset switching and having a good setup in place to keep the iPad charged etc.
What kind of cable are you using from the iRig to the amp? The iRig can be prone to feedback and extra noise since it uses the headphone jack - are clean tones ok?
Dipendra Bagchee The iRig is plugged in the iPad's audio jack. From iRig/iPad the signal pass through a P10-P2 adapter that goes in a P10 cable in the High Amp input. Cleans are less harsh because the volume is low, if a raise it, the treble kills everybody ahahaha. On Jamup, the output is configured to Speakers, not Headphone (nothing really changed). The Gate on BIAS does not change the treble.
Does your amp have an fx loop? You may get better results going straight into the fx return. Otherwise you may have to compensate the treble on the amps eq.
I have a roland cube 30. will plugging in straight to the amp clash with the settings on the amp? The amp also has an aux input to use the amp has a speaker, will that work better? Your reply would be much appreciated
Yes with that particular amp the aux input is probably your best bet since it will bypass the Roland's built in amp modeling. You actually will probably get better results keeping the cabinet modeling on in that case but try both and see what sound you like better. Don't forget you can move the mics around in BIAS too, which can make a pretty big difference in the tone.
Great demo! awesome sound with the CAB OFF. Just in case the amp does not have an effects loop, have you tried the guitar input in front of the amp? Thanks!
I haven't tried it myself but you can run it into the front input as well. It may not sound quite as clear since you would be running it through an extra preamp. The best thing to do would be to try and set the cleanest setting on the amp so that it doesn't color the tone too much.
Very good video estou I am looking long ago a video like this and almost nobody uses connected to an amp I tried it with the jam apogee and headphone output to ipad to a marshall and sounds incredible but the serious problem spending the canar of distorcion to clean as in the bias would do that live ? regards
Hi I have an irig pro, so obviously I connect my guitar through it into an ipad air via lightning connector. So my question is what specific type of cable do i need to connect to the ipad headphone jack, into the fx loop of my amp? I'm just a little confused. I was thinking if i need a 1/4in mono female to 3.5mm stereo male connector then connect my guitar cable through it?So ipad headphone jack > mono/stereo adapter > guitar cable > fx loop. Is that right? Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks man!
I don't I think I said that (or meant that). Generally you want to disable speaker modeling when running into a real cab but of course you don't have to. Whatever sounds better to your ears.
Great idea on posting a video on this topic. I have an HT-5R combo and will try this setup. Question, do you know if with this setup I could still use the Aux In to play along backing tracks?
Yes the aux in should still play the backing tracks since it is after the pre amp too. Don't forget you can also play tracks off the iPad too in the background ;)
So hard to find info on using a cab with the iPad still running the same setup? I'm trying to get setup now. Have everything but the interface and 1/8 stereo out
Hi, I'm just getting into this setup too, I'm basically super short on cash to buy better gear, my amp sounds like butt, but I have bias on my laptop, and I am getting good tones. I'm having a problem with the cab Sim thing. With it on, the tone isn't bad but as you describe, it sounds a bit weird. However, running through my halfstack, with the cab Sim off, it doesn't sound like its running through any cab. It sounds essentially like playing through a normal speaker with nothing but a distortion pedal. Can you tell me more about your settings in bias and how you achieved your tone? My amp head is garbage. I'm running it on clean just to push the noise, and have a pretty nice cab and after market pickups.
Which amp is it? Does it have an FX loop or are you running it into the front input? I'm not really using any special settings in this vid, just disabling the cab to eliminate the "double cab" effect. If you are going in to the front of the amp it may be overdriving the input too much or the EQ of the preamp may be coloring the tone too much.
Evan Abbott In this example I needed the camera kit connector for the Rocksmith USB cable to work. Now I have an Apogee Jam that connects with a 30 pin or lightning connector.
Hey - yes this was a while ago :) The same idea can work with your PC - you just need to be able to send an output from your computer audio interface to the FX return of your amp and make sure cab sims are off - this can work with essentially any amp modeler plug in (or even hardware) where you can disable cab sims. Sorry I don't have the setup now to demonstrate.
Thank you! I didn't think about using the FX return, that was a great tip!! Hey, can I use a regular instrument cable going from my iPad main out (I use an Alesis iODoc II) to my FX return in? I'm thinking I might not need a speaker cable because I'm not sending a powered signal, like from my head to me cab but want to be safe.
I'm loving Bias Amp! Question: Is there a way to select the output so Bias knows I'm connecting to a speaker/mixer/P.A instead of headphones? The app sounds AMAZING through headphones and very thin through speakers, what am I doing wrong? I know I can open JamUp (lite) and select output (speaker) there but it makes it slow to audition new Bias amps as this has to be done with headphones before being openned up in Jamup before I hear it sounding nice and full through a P.A... Please help!!
I don't think there is a way to do this yet within BIAS. Generally though you shouldn't have to do too much deep editing to the amp when you switch to speaker output mode, just using the the EQ on the amp controls within JamUp should be sufficient in most cases. What I've learned with all these modelers is that you will always have to spend some time with your final output system to dial in the correct tone - you can get in the ballpark with headphones or on your amp at home but expect to save a preset for each setup that you have dialed in. I generally have presets for each guitar with each amp/speaker/headphone setup I use.
Have you noticed that with the cabinet bypassed, the mic choice and position still changes the sound? So the cabinet modelling is bypassed, but not the mic. I think this is a major flaw, and I've told them that. I'm now using the Pro version so I can use my Redwirez cab IR's. But it's not as good as just using the Redwirez MixIR plug-in, where you can combine multiple IR's.
Hey mate great video Im just curious, does the master volume on the blackstar function as normal when running directly into the effects loop return like that?
Yes. The volume knobs are the only knobs that still function when plugging straight into the return. The FX loop is wired a little strange on the HT-5 and you can still change between channel 1 and 2 but channel 1 has a lot more volume output.
thats pretty cool thanks man, the fx loop in my orange jim root terror doesn't work like the blackstar, i think its something to do with them being series or parallel loops, one works one doesn't. pretty sweet that the blackstar allows control of the master, it can double as a little tube power amp like your using it or buy two and run stereo with a pod, probably cheaper than buying a dedicated stereo tube power amp too......hmmmm......
So I am getting my ipad any day now and was looking at doing something similar to what you are doing, however I like my ht 5r sounds and saw on a jamup review someone just using it for effects in the amp fx loop. What is your opinion on this application? Cheers!
Yes it should work fine for that. Just disable the amp block and use whatever effects you like. The main thing will be trying to get a good level into the iPad but with something like the Apogee Jam or iRig HD you have a gain control so you can avoid overloading the input.
I wonder how the bias software would sound by going directly from the lap top/ ipad and go straight into a standard live PA system. Would you then use the cab simulator in order to get a good sound through the PA?
+Joel Simoneau Should work fine for that - that's really the simplest setup, but sometimes smaller PAs don't handle guitar so well so it's good to have options.
Great video! I was hoping you can help me with an issue i have with Bias. I have a focusrite itrack solo interface. I'm trying to use it with my Shecter 5 string bass guitar. I plug it in but i can't get to work. I can't use any of the amps or anything. I hear my bass sound but it doesn't puck up the signal to use the amps or effects with Bias. I really hope you can help me out. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!
Occasionally I'll run into a similar problem with my Apogee Jam interface where I'll get signal into the app but no FX being applied. Trying force quitting all of your apps, reconnect your interface, and then reopening the app to see if it picks up the input properly. I've found this happens most when I have multiple audio apps open (like Amplitube and Garageband and JamUp at the same time).
Did I get it right : You use a Rocksmith PS3 Interface into a USB-Lightning Adapter for Ipad ? Od do you have an Ipad with old Connector ? Will this function with an Ipad mini with Lighting ?
Yes I used the Rocksmith cable with the Camera Connection Kit USB adapter. Mine is the older 30 pin version but it should work the same with the Lightning version. I've recently started using an Apogee Jam though - I like it better because I can use it with my iPhone and iPad and the connection is more solid as it "clicks" into place.
Should be pretty easy in a gig - very similar to any other multifx unit that you might use. The big challenge is having a reliable solution for footswitching between presets. Right now the options are pretty limited but it seems like bluetooth foot controllers are becoming more common - haven't tried them myself yet...
Everytime I play via PA the sound seems to be okay but when I use headphones as an output I can hear anoying frequency when palm muting.. the thing is that I can hear that buzz only when tube screamer in front of the amp is engaged while I play through headphones.. so I can hear that buzz in my recordings. and without TS the sound is not tight enough.. any advice ? signal chain : noise gate-tube screamer-markIV amp sim(mesa cab)-10 band eq-reverb
Does this happen when the iPad or iPod/iPhone is unplugged from power? It could be a ground loop buzz. You could try a different iOS interface that has it's own output jack so you don't have to use the headphone jack (iRig Pro or Line 6 Sonicport for example).
Tomas Obester Yes you could use it as a "pedal board" running into the front of an amp. Just leave out the amp models (BIAS FX is the app you want to use as BIAS has only amp modeling)
The riff I'm playing is from the song "Middleman" by my band Asyst (you can check it out at asysttheband.com). Yes the tuning is a 1/2 step down and drop d.
navid rostami That should sound great Navid. It's always difficult to say what is "best", but any decent speakers and interface can get great results. If you're happy with it, that is the most important thing!
With the Lexicon simply run a 1/4 inch out into the FX return of your amp - you will probably want to run a mono FX/amp setup as well so you don't lose half of the stereo signal.
Thanks for the demo. BIAS seems Great. Does anyone know if the Axe FX II or Kemper feel more immediate. i.e. faster response time / feel more like a real amp than iPad apps. I assume they do as the Axe FX and Kemper are devoted solely to creating guitar tones and probably have faster processors. Any advice is Much appreciated as I may buy an iPad Soon just to play with BIAS. Thank you.
I don't have either but I'd assume that they have better latency for that more immediate sound. That said, I think BIAS (and JamUp Pro) are very playable on the low latency modes - it's not distracting to me. It's really an incredible value for the money.
thanks for the vid...but for me, disabling the cabinet sim didn't stop the super harsh feedback & thin crappy tone when going into my (clean) amp, maybe I'm doomed to only enjoy this on headphones.
Yes you can but you will need to tweak the amp a bit to try and get the cleanest sound possible. Since you would be basically plugging an amp into another amp you will have to work more to get the modeled tone to come through.
Man I hope u answer my question I want to connect my guitar to my iPad and my my iPad to the amp All at the same time so I can play live with some effects that I can do through GarageBand How can I do that ?? Thank u any am a huge fan
hello i tried just today to use ipad with bias as a "sound unit" and it was going straight into the tube amp loop. Sound was awesome, but i had very suttle latency compared to playing just through amp (mostly noticable in slow chuggy parts) any ideas how to get rid of it?
So it can never be removed? Cause i don't remember even subtle latency on lets say Line6 Pod and other mid price processors. Feels little bit weird, like playing air guitar or something 😆
Thank you Dipendra! What would be the purpose of removing the power amp from bias? Would this allow you to plug directly into the front of the amp (instrument/line in) ? Thank you again for posting this video...this saved me tons of frustration!
The power amp also colors your tone a certain amount - with this setup you are theoretically going through a power amp sim and then the power amp of the real amp so it isn't a "pure" modeling setup. Just like removing the cab opens up the sound , disabling the power amp modeling would provide a little more fine tuning options.
Hey man, please tell me how you set your amp, in preamp section to cabinet micing section. Thanks a lot for this video. I've been learn this setup to my live performs, glad to see this video. Thanks i hope you can help my cas, thanks man, sorry for my english
Thanks for the answer!, i have an Apogee one interface, so let me if i understand, in order to plug in my interface to the amp, i have to do it through the headphones output to guitar amp input? Thanks,.
Hey. Thanks for this video. I need some help. I use an apogee jam to connect my guitar to my iPad. I then run a 3.5mm cable from the headset jack on the iPad to the fx return port on my Blackstar ht60 soloist. (I use a 1/4 Adapter with the 3.5mm cable) When i do this, I get no sound whatsoever. If i plug it into the main input on the Amp it works, but the effects are not so clear. Amy ideas? Thanks
+ZuluV1 Looks like with that amp you need to plug in a dummy jack into the input to "trick" the amp into thinking it's got something plugged into the front. Check out this thread: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/modeler-into-fx-return-of-tube-amp.1158639/ You can use a short patch cable or even something like a headphone jack and then plug into the return and you should be rocking!
+Dipendra Bagchee Thanks for the reply. I did what you said, and it worked, kind of. I do now get sound, but the volume is really low, even with the iPad on max. My amp's volume has to be up to around 2 o'clock which is really high. Also the effects don't sound great. I must be missing something. Any ideas? Thanks
@@jammyjamz89 Ah sorry I misunderstood the question. Yes you can either plug straight into the guitar input or if your amp has an fx loop you can plug straight into the fx return input. I recommend the fx return if you have it since it usually provides a better sound with a modeler. If you are only using FX then in the front input is fine.
+gtamoviestudios the easiest way is to connect a cable from your sound card output to the PA mixer. The exact cable depends on what type of outputs are on your sound card and what mixer inputs you have available.
Im sorry, but can you tell me how do i run my scarlett solo into my randall 75watt solid state combo? And where do i plug it? Effects Loop Send?? Clean channel?? Sorry xD
+Dipendra Bagchee Thanks for the speedy replay, greetings from Ireland. Yeah, so I guess it's important to get the right cable. What cable are you using exactly? An 1/8 inch stereo to dual 1/4 inch mono? If so, I'm thinking of using the same setup as you (with a Magnum 44 poweramp), but possibly plugging the other 1/4 inch mono cable into a cab simulator box (maybe an AMT Pangea - you can load your own impulses on to it) then running that into the PA. So that way you have good stage volume and an awesome direct signal going to the FOH PA. Just need to make sure I've the correct cables in place and if I'd need a DI box from the Pangea before plugging into the stage snake XLR input. Any thoughts on such a setup? Thanks in advance.
+Niall O'Brien Actually, the Pangea has a "thru" connection, so I could go from iPad to Pangea and split it there - one to PA, the other to poweramp and cab. :)
+Niall O'Brien Yes in this video I'm using 1/8" stereo to 1/4" dual mono cable, mainly since the output is coming from the headphone jack. Some iOS interfaces have quarter inch outs on the interface themselves so it makes the connection simpler.
Yes! Back when I did this video that wan't an option in the software yet. I've found at low volumes keeping the poweramp on can sometimes sound fuller but as you crank the real amp up it usually sounds better with poweramp modeling off.
lovenish kumar Yes this vid was done before that feature was available, although at low volumes it's less of an issue as the poweramp isn't working very hard.
Oh my god.....FINALLY!! I've been looking for better info about this setup for like 2 years!!! There's so many ways to set this up wrong and positive grid hasn't really given proper instructions regarding an amp setup except, "just............plug it in......"
+Evan Abbott I know man...if i come across the guy who did this...would definitely break his jaw
I can't find out how to do it I have a quarter jack into my iPad and doesn't work
Yes agreed! There are so many fantastic options these days.
Thank you for explaining this I’ve been looking for an answer to this question for some time now and this is the first response I’ve seen from anyone that even addresses the question.
So just to recap what you are doing....Jam Up Pro does not allow you to bypass the cab modeling within the app, so when you plug in to your amp through the ipad it's basically like playing through two amps giving it the simulated sound? wow great .someone finally showed how to contact amp mod, like BIAS into a live amp cab....double checking if i got this right you plug out of the ipad into the effects loops of a amp head,.than turn of amp cab in BIAS
Hi will it plug into any amp?
What line in do we need ?
What slitter?
Hi,
I have BIAS on my desktop pc. Could I use that to run through my amp? It has 2 channels, one for clean and one for OD. I think I tried this with guitar rig before, but it was really bad. I'm using a Behringer Guitar link to connect to my pc.
Did you find any solution... I want to connect to bias fx to pc.. Also want to connect my amp and cabinet...
Thanks bro!!
+Dipendra Bagchee to run mi ipad in my triple rectifier I need an interface but what caind of interface?
There are quite a few too choose from, I use the Apogee Jam but there are several other choices - check out some of them here: www.sweetwater.com/c1062--iPad_iPhone_Guitar_Interfaces_FX
VERY useful advice, thanks man! Even though it took you 7 seconds to actually show how to do it hehe.
Ha ha true, but hopefully the extra explanation helps clarify why it sounds better. :)
Yes true. Hope they make the option of disabling the power amp.
Have you experienced this?
Is there a point doing this? Does it sound better than the amp itself? Cheers
Depending on your amp you may need to use a DI box to match the levels to your amp correctly.
what do you think should work better ? Active PA or tube amp+cab ? of course, I can get active PA much cheaper but what about sound quality ?
I think it comes down to personal preference. Amp+Cab gives a more traditional "real amp" feel, especially when jamming in your room etc. Direct to PA will give you more consistency between what you hear and what you might run to the main PA for a live show. I've used the Alto TS112A with various models and it does sound really good but sometimes I still just like to use a real amp too, so I'm always going back and forth depending on my mood.
wow this is crazy !
i just got an ipad and the possibilities are endless !
amazing video !
cheers !
how do you setup your blackstar here? clean channel? or it doesn't really matter?
Can you list down the equipment?
(As a pose to the sounding great on direct PC recordings i mean.. thinking about using it for gigs)
Sounds wise I think it will hold up well live (either through an amp or direct to PA) - the biggest challenge is dealing with preset switching and having a good setup in place to keep the iPad charged etc.
Awesome man thanks for your tips!
Nice tip mate! But I keep with harsh treble sound when running any simulation on my 20w SS amp. Any tips?
How are you hooking it up?
Dipendra Bagchee Guitar > Whammy - Wah - Flanger - Vibe - Drive - Fuzz - Delay > iRig > iPad 4 > BIAS (no JamUp) > Amp. I disabled the cab sim.
You plug iPad direct to fx loop? You have different impedance. What about add to chain reamp box? (iPad -> reamp -> fxloop)
Thanks man!
did you say that you can't use the speaker models on the pod? because you can.
Have everything but the interface and 1/8 stereo out
Maybe I’m just like blind but I cannot find how to bypass the cab currently in bias FX 2
Awesome, video. I wonder if there is any way to do this on Windows? Maybe fx loop send, interface in, then interface send to fx loop return?
+Dipendra Bagchee I'm using a really cheap head I don't think it has an fx loop even, but I'll try that thank you
Thanks for the Vid man. I was using the FX loop into my ios and back into the amp, this is much easier.
I would like to know the purpose of the camera kit connector...is it for older generation iPads?
Evan Abbott In this example I needed the camera kit connector for the Rocksmith USB cable to work. Now I have an Apogee Jam that connects with a 30 pin or lightning connector.
i know this video is soo long ago but can i use my bias fx two installed in my pc to do the same? and can you show the plug in process upclose?
Hey - yes this was a while ago :) The same idea can work with your PC - you just need to be able to send an output from your computer audio interface to the FX return of your amp and make sure cab sims are off - this can work with essentially any amp modeler plug in (or even hardware) where you can disable cab sims. Sorry I don't have the setup now to demonstrate.
i have a doubt, with the positive grid plug, its just plug the cables, running the app then plug to an amp and it work? (EQing and stuff aside)
+Norman Weichel Yeah regular 1/4" instrument cable from the Alesis to your FX return will work.
Did Rocksmith cable stop working for you? On Ios 9.3 I just get drop-outs and jittery audio.
I think I do remember that happening but it's been a while since I messed with it.
Hey mate great video
Im just curious, does the master volume on the blackstar function as normal when running directly into the effects loop return like that?
Yes. The volume knobs are the only knobs that still function when plugging straight into the return. The FX loop is wired a little strange on the HT-5 and you can still change between channel 1 and 2 but channel 1 has a lot more volume output.
thats pretty cool thanks man,
the fx loop in my orange jim root terror doesn't work like the blackstar, i think its something to do with them being series or parallel loops, one works one doesn't. pretty sweet that the blackstar allows control of the master, it can double as a little tube power amp like your using it or buy two and run stereo with a pod, probably cheaper than buying a dedicated stereo tube power amp too......hmmmm......
so i guess i'll need an ipad...but will any tablet work?
Same principle should work on any tablet/phone with a guitar sim app - as long as you can get audio out and turn cab sims off.
Alright cool. Thanks for responding!!!
will this work with a wireless guitar pack?
what is best for output from an i pad, studio monitor or amp? for guitar.
Were you going through the clean Channel on the amp?
Hi, great video , I can’t have a good signal with irig 2 to my Fender hot road deluxe in to the effect loop , what in doing wrong ?
Did I get it right : You use a Rocksmith PS3 Interface into a USB-Lightning Adapter for Ipad ?
Od do you have an Ipad with old Connector ? Will this function with an Ipad mini with Lighting ?
Yes I used the Rocksmith cable with the Camera Connection Kit USB adapter. Mine is the older 30 pin version but it should work the same with the Lightning version. I've recently started using an Apogee Jam though - I like it better because I can use it with my iPhone and iPad and the connection is more solid as it "clicks" into place.
where do i connect my ipad in cabinet or headamp?
how dificult is it to be used in a gig?... when you have to pass from rythm to lead and back... or for volumes... thanks... and great video.
Should be pretty easy in a gig - very similar to any other multifx unit that you might use. The big challenge is having a reliable solution for footswitching between presets. Right now the options are pretty limited but it seems like bluetooth foot controllers are becoming more common - haven't tried them myself yet...
thank you for the help. lml
does bias also bypass preamp tubes?
You could try a different iOS interface that has it's own output jack so you don't have to use the headphone jack (iRig Pro or Line 6 Sonicport for example).
is it possible to use positive grid apps with real amps for fx only ?
Tomas Obester Yes you could use it as a "pedal board" running into the front of an amp. Just leave out the amp models (BIAS FX is the app you want to use as BIAS has only amp modeling)
Dipendra Bagchee and if I want to put some modulation fx after the amp ?
Hello,
Could it work with a reference power amp and a guitar cab foe high gain stuff?
Yeah it would work great with a clean power amp and guitar cab!
Just tried this method with my JCA50H, working like a fucking charm. Thanks brother!
Kyle Gregory Glad you found it helpful man!
Nice riff! Whats the name of the music? If not, are you using Drop D? Thanks!
The riff I'm playing is from the song "Middleman" by my band Asyst (you can check it out at asysttheband.com). Yes the tuning is a 1/2 step down and drop d.
I do this but too, it's great. Until you upgrade to Bias Amp 2 which doesn't have a cab bypass option.
Would this work if I had just a speaker cab and no head? As if I used the app as my head.
No, you need something to amplify the signal for the speaker cabinet. You could run it directly into a powered speaker.
nice idea
.guitar ipad return efx tube amp . your said mean :is that your chain? thanks
Yep that's right.
navid rostami That should sound great Navid. It's always difficult to say what is "best", but any decent speakers and interface can get great results. If you're happy with it, that is the most important thing!
What would I do with an interface from FX desktop? I'm running a Lexicon Alpha right now.
Childhoof try to put it on headphone mode into your amp it stops te noise
If I don't have an effects loop can I just hook my Ipad into my guitar amp input?
Yes you can but you will need to tweak the amp a bit to try and get the cleanest sound possible. Since you would be basically plugging an amp into another amp you will have to work more to get the modeled tone to come through.
would you please let me know how to disable the power amp ? i'm trying the desktop version
In the Bias FX window, click the cog-wheel on the top right. Then click Global Control. In there, you will be able to disable Poweramp.
When you use the stereo splitter, don't you only get one side of your signal?
Yes, but unless you have two amps to run into for stereo you need to either just use one channel or get a stereo > mono adapter.
Man I hope u answer my question
I want to connect my guitar to my iPad and my my iPad to the amp
All at the same time so I can play live with some effects that I can do through GarageBand
How can I do that ??
Thank u any am a huge fan
You need an interface that both can plug into. I use my Line 6 Sonic port. I'm testing it this week to make sure it works well! I'll keep you posted!
Thank u very much please keep me on touch
hello i tried just today to use ipad with bias as a "sound unit" and it was going straight into the tube amp loop. Sound was awesome, but i had very suttle latency compared to playing just through amp (mostly noticable in slow chuggy parts) any ideas how to get rid of it?
T1Mastr Yes there can be a small amount of latency - make sure all other apps are closed - that can help but it can’t be eliminated completely.
So it can never be removed? Cause i don't remember even subtle latency on lets say Line6 Pod and other mid price processors. Feels little bit weird, like playing air guitar or something 😆
T1Mastr what audio interface are you using with the iPad?
im using iRig 2. could something like apogee duet solve the issue?
you can also disable the cabinet by flicking it up out of the signal path, same thing :)
TheWaterbound07 Yes two years ago that feature wasn't there ha ha! :D
I have a spider valve 212 and it has power amp in connection. Will this work?
Yep should work great with that!
Just like removing the cab opens up the sound , disabling the power amp modeling would provide a little more fine tuning options.
justo lo que estaba buscando solo queria saber si puedo usar el ipad con amplitube mesa boogie, con un gabinete rectifier
Hey man, please tell me how you set your amp, in preamp section to cabinet micing section. Thanks a lot for this video. I've been learn this setup to my live performs, glad to see this video. Thanks i hope you can help my cas, thanks man, sorry for my english
Thanks a lot dude, I'm gonna try this tomorrow
When i do this is sound buzzy through cab without the sim on, any ideas?
It's going to sound buzzier at first - you may need to tweak the presence and other eq settings to dial it in for your cabinet.
Thanks Man! it was a great Demo!
Helps a lot. Thank you very much.
The problem I have with BIAS is that even though you disable the cab, it leaves the mic active...try moving the mic around, and the sound will change.
I only have a practice amp and a small quarter jack to lightening connector into my amp and doesn't work
Thanks for this video, if I understand you correctly the signal chain is Guitar > iPad > FX Return. Is that correct?
Lair Nicolas yep that's right!
If my amp doesn´t have return, can i plug in my guitar in the input?
Yes but you will probably get a more "colored" sound that way. Try to set the amp as clean and neutral as possible when going straight into the front.
Thanks for the answer!, i have an Apogee one interface, so let me if i understand, in order to plug in my interface to the amp, i have to do it through the headphones output to guitar amp input?
Thanks,.
Nice video. I'm gonna try that myself now :-)
Can you do this with a laptop?
Deltasquad382943 Yes same principle applies.
can i use the rocksmith cable on the desktop vesion?
Yes it should work on the desktop version too.
Hey. Thanks for this video. I need some help.
I use an apogee jam to connect my guitar to my iPad. I then run a 3.5mm cable from the headset jack on the iPad to the fx return port on my Blackstar ht60 soloist. (I use a 1/4 Adapter with the 3.5mm cable)
When i do this, I get no sound whatsoever.
If i plug it into the main input on the Amp it works, but the effects are not so clear.
Amy ideas? Thanks
+ZuluV1 Looks like with that amp you need to plug in a dummy jack into the input to "trick" the amp into thinking it's got something plugged into the front. Check out this thread: www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/modeler-into-fx-return-of-tube-amp.1158639/
You can use a short patch cable or even something like a headphone jack and then plug into the return and you should be rocking!
Any ideas? Thanks
would this work with a power amp and cab??
Yep should work great!
Can I plug straight into a half cab with left and right plug
No you can’t plug straight into a guitar cabinet - you need some type of amp to amplify the signal and the amp will connect to your speaker.
@@DipendraBagchee I mean is it possible to set up bias fx 2 through an amp instead of head phones
@@DipendraBagchee how does this connect to my laptop with Bias fx2 installed
@@jammyjamz89 What audio interface are you using with your laptop?
Dentária Porto No, you need an amplifier to make the signal loud enough to power the speaker cabinet.
please. do you have any advice for an efficent way to connect a Laptop running Bias FX Standalone directly to a PA for a live gig?
+gtamoviestudios the easiest way is to connect a cable from your sound card output to the PA mixer. The exact cable depends on what type of outputs are on your sound card and what mixer inputs you have available.
+Dipendra Bagchee would u recommend gigging with bias directly in to the PA?
Yes that is probably the simplest setup as long as you have a good monitoring system for the PA.
Im sorry, but can you tell me how do i run my scarlett solo into my randall 75watt solid state combo? And where do i plug it? Effects Loop Send?? Clean channel?? Sorry xD
Any issues regarding balanced/unbalanced cables?
It should work either way - it just depends on your setup. Most amps have an unbalanced input though.
+Niall O'Brien What interface are you using for the iPad? (FYI my mom is actually Irish, I have family in the Dublin and Wexford area ;) )
+Niall O'Brien Yes in this video I'm using 1/8" stereo to 1/4" dual mono cable, mainly since the output is coming from the headphone jack. Some iOS interfaces have quarter inch outs on the interface themselves so it makes the connection simpler.
You shoud turn off the power amp too because you’re running through the blackstar’s one...shouldn’t you?
Yes! Back when I did this video that wan't an option in the software yet. I've found at low volumes keeping the poweramp on can sometimes sound fuller but as you crank the real amp up it usually sounds better with poweramp modeling off.
Great tip, good to know..!
I was think of going into a crown xli800 to a 2x12 v30s cabinet. Anyone try that?
You should turn the power amp off too...ur using it twice
lovenish kumar Yes this vid was done before that feature was available, although at low volumes it's less of an issue as the poweramp isn't working very hard.
big difference....cool vid
I also use the rocksmith cable, haha
Lol cool I have one too. So where do you plug it in??
Thanks bud
Good video, but so much bla, bla, bla...
