    Since New Horizons flew by Pluto on July 14, 2015, it's completely redefined what we know about the dwarf planet and its largest moon Charon. New Horizons' mission will continue to be full of surprises, but here's what we've learned so far

      ***** We need to be able to drill through that ice though, and preferably in several places (in case the first place is a bust)... It will be tough but im sure some way can be found. Perhaps 2 different vehicles landing, one providing a drill, one providing the drill bits and rods?

    • @DemRat

      NicosMind Using only one vehicle would be more efficient, as you only have the overhead (The Parts you need for both anyway) once.

      correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there already a mission where a robot would land on Europa in 2018 and drill through the ice layer to see if there's life in the (presumably and likely) seas underneath

    Charon is pronounced with a hard 'k', just like "cholera" (another word of greek origin), not like "Sharon". In English, "Kharon" is even a valid way to spell the name of the greek mythological character the moon is named after.

    • @besmart
      @besmart  9 років тому +67

      ***** Actually, most astronomers pronounce it "Sha-ron". You're right that the mythological character is pronounced "kha-ron", but Jim Christy, the astronomer who discovered the moon in 1978 promised his wife Charlene he'd name it after her. But since it was IAU custom to stick with mythological names, they compromised and added the "Sha-" sound from Charlene to the mythological name… hence "Sha-ron" #themoreyouknow

    • @MarcelloSevero
      @MarcelloSevero 9 років тому +4

      Lord Random Yes, that is the correct modern Greek pronunciation. You should know. However, in ancient Greek the letters theta, phi, and khi were not pronounced as in modern Greek. Instead, they were breathy, aspirated t, p, and k sounds respectively.

    New Horizons is on its way to a place called "2014 MU69". Before it was classified its original catalog name was "1110113Y" which is the basis for its nickname: "Eleven". Eleven is 30 to 45km in diameter, and will be 43.4 AU from the Sun when New Horizons arrives on December 31, 2018. Eleven is still a long way off, but New Horizons is moving very fast

    The actual reason for why pluto is named pluto, is because the planet naming people couldn't agree on a name, so they let the public rain down suggestions in to a small box. One suggestion was from a girl. The first two letters of pluto, PL are standing for the man who origanly discovered
    initials. And pluto (like he said) is pretty much the greek god for the devil. So know you know, coming from a 12 year old. (Sorry if i suck at spelling)

      Bosniantoptens It is going to continue flying deeper into the Kuiper belt. NASA has identified a few Kuiper Belt Objects that New Horizons will fly close enough to in order to study. Not as close as it flew by Pluto, but it can collect some data. As long as NASA continues to fund the mission (meaning that there will be people listening on the ground and ready to study the data), there's plenty more to come from the weird outer limits

I mean, if those were the actual images we had of Pluto before NH arrived, I'm kind of guessing we couldn't definitively point it anywhere past Pluto. I'm so curious though :-D You can't NOT want to know what's out there! We're not special, I want to know before I'm dead that there's civilization somewhere we might be able to reach someday.

    Speaking of KSP: I wish New Horizons had the same data-transfer-rate as my probes in that game. Can't wait until we get all the images from that thing!
    Where to next? Mars. Manned. It's the obvious choice. Well.. that and a probe to Europa. We gotta drill that ice crust and see what's underneath. Space exploration definitely needs more funding.

    Heh, fitting that, considering how long it took to figure out features of Pluto, that we use contemporary sci-fi for "modern mythology" instead of stuff from Shakespeare (which is older and was used for Jupiter's moons, which were discovered centuries ago) or even classical Greek mythology for some of the first observable sights in the sky.

    Also, what are the implications of sunlight taking 9 hours to reach Pluto? No need for sunscreen? Solar power not so viable?

    a simple curious question if you can kindly answer please.
    Given scenario: lets say I'm standing on the ground with a ball in my hand, when I throw the ball about 6 inches up in the air, the ball falls back into my hand due to gravity (and angle)
    now lets say I'm seated in a cart that is moving at the speed of 50 km per hour and I perform the same maneuver, by throwing the ball a few inches in the air (on a 90 degree angle) why doesn't the ball fall where it was first lifted, how does it travel 50 km in the air to fall back into my hand, should the ball not fall on the ground 50 km behind?
