- Wagner Moura didn't speak Spanish and was too skinny to play Pablo Escobar for Netflix's Narcos, so he enrolled in school and gained the "freshman 15" to prep.

To think that his acting abilities were so great that the casting directors didnt even care that he didnt speak the language
+Radhika Doraisingam Elite Squad is his best work. You would love it too. I guess.
+Ivaldo Capitão Nascimento is freaking iconic. I absolutely love that film and his character
+Radhika Doraisingam
"He'd work his way around", they must've certainly thought.
He flew to Colombia.
He's good friends with the director, Jose Padilha, that was surely the determining factor. (But obviously also is indicative of his acting skills, as Padilha has used him on several large projects)
+Radhika Doraisingam 80% of the words in Spanish and Portuguese are the same. Both languages derived from Latin, just like Italian and French.
Escobar being interviewed by President Gaveria.

Yes, we brazilians do not speak Spanish. We speak Portuguese. You can realize by his accent comparing to anyone who speaks spanish. When I've been in the US twice as an exchange student it was easy to identify a brazilian speaking English.
Imagine having had a random spanish class in Colombia with this dude just one of the classmembers. And then you go to watch Netflix a year later...

I don’t know if this sounds fucked up. Wagner is such a good actor. He made Escobar in certain scenes likeable.
6 Underground yeah it’s so weird because when I watched the Cali narcos or even the Mexico narcos I didn’t feel as bad for them but I found myself rooting for Pablo sometimes for some reason😂
He made Pablo Escobar human...does that make sense? Not a drug Lord murderer but an intelligent human with feelings. Loved it!
I totally agree. It was only in certain scenes where he did cruel acts that I didn't approve or like him. But basically for the rest of the series I was 100% rooting for him and was very sad when seeing to what he had come down to in the last chapters.
@@thijsvandijk6604 tropa de elite is so good. Watched it twice and il watch it again after you reminded me of it. 😆
Pablo was not as "bad" as other Narcos in real life too, these series show us very well how good and bad no longer exist in these kind of conflicts. Sometimes is just monsters fighting monsters in the name of law. Who is going to tell me he or she didn't hate Carrillo after killing Gustavo?
Last episode of Escobar life is heartbreaking I forgot he was a monster. Brilliant actor and brillian writing
I just finished watching it. Yeah it was pretty emotional. He was a family man
@@ratlakmin you are lucky dude. I wish I can watch it for the first time. Enjoy....
Its very emotional
I got happy seeing his mum and tata get that upset
@ratlakmin if he was a family man he wouldn't make his family live in hiding so close to death and destrction. By the way he met his real life wife when she was 13 and she was 15 when he married her. He was 10 years older. Just like his cousin gustavo says on the show "you need to control everything". The main reason he loved her was because he had complete control over her life and groomed her from a young age.
All brazilians know this guy for a long time now. He is brilliant. A world-class actor who's underrated just because he's from Brazil. Shame...

Straight up didn’t think he spoke a word of English until seeing this, unbelievable actor
As a Spanish speaker not me his Colombian accent is nonexistent he sounds like someone that speak Spanish but is still learning(which is exactly the case)
He litterally sounded like someone learning spanish. Which is the case lmao.
@@darthkrator9366 given that most of people who watched Narcos don’t speak a word of Spanish, Wagner could speak portunhol and people would still think that was a perfect Spanish 😂 I think that’s the reason the director didn’t care about this accent, they were doing a tv show for Hispanic countries that was a product for American market (eventually the rest of world).
Wagner Moura is a kickass actor ,americans should take advice from the Parasite director and just accept subtitles to have a whole new world unveiling right before their eyes. His movies ARE GREAT
Just wait until you watch "Elite Squad". That man's badassery sky rockets in that movie.
Some Americans love subtitles. Dubbed is the worst thing to happen to cinema since Howard the Duck
I watched 2 of his movies Elite Squad and The Man From the Future and loved them both
I thought he was Mexican or American who can speak Spanish at first, but Brazilian who played Colombian, it's very impressive, and his acting is very good
Portuguese is spoken in Brazil not Spanish...Some words are a little similar but that's about it.

Yeah, like the last name did not give him away

thats why he said its impressive
He smashed his role as Pablo, I don't think anyone else couldve done it better
Hugo Garcia nahhh he did really bad as Escobar, but I still respect him for his hard work, watch the Colombian show, that actor really kicked ass!
Wagner was awesome, no doubt, but Andrés Parra will always be the one who really gave life to Pablo Escobar.

O conceito de estratégia
Man, I am amazed with Wagner, I didnt know he was brazilian; when I first saw him in Narcos as Pablo, I didnt have any doubt that he was born in Colombia. I am from Peru and I know how people in Colombia speaks. Incredible acting!, but not only that, his presence on screen was outstanding, his energy and power without even saying a word. So, he started with the language which is hard in itself and then start building up the character....
he’s incredible. the fact that he made the audience root for pablo at times is insane
his acting level is damm high
Not Really, his accent is way off and one of pablo's main characteristic was his accent and his way of talking overall, he doesn't even get close to that of you want to see a very good personification a Pablo you gotta see andres parra acting in the soap opera Pablo Escobar el patron Del mal, he reeeeeally reeeeeally nails it even the way he used to breathe whilst he was giving a "speech", expressions, he has it all, its almost perfect.
juan david Velasquez Yeah, Do let me know when you've learnt speaking Cantonese in perfect Hong Kong accent in under six months. :)
some would say it's over 9000
Zayn Khan then why not use someone that really speaks the correct way? They have used several other Colombian actors for that matter
do u really think just by speaking the perfect accent makes someone the best actor?
Give this man literally every award because he earned them for making me forget that Pablo Escobar was an absolute monster.
His performance was SO COMPELLING that I ALMOST felt bad when they got him.

you know that portuguese and spanish are not very different. For a Brazilian person that only knows his native language, is way easier for him to understand spanish over english. You know that, right?
Apparently they only have a few words in common, according to native speakers. I don't know.
valar yes yes. But with the words they have in common, if you are portuguese, you can pretty much understand the rest. Of course there are some terms that are different, but you can understand almost evertthing they say and it is a very simple language to learn if you are portuguese. I know this because im portuguese.
