This is by far the smartest design I've seen yet

    Nice idea!
Wouldn't it be better,if the air canal was in the bottom, since hot air goes up?

Good question, if hot air enters at the bottom the hot air rises and picks up the moisture it becomes heavier/cools and wants to drop back down and frustrates more hot air rising. With the hot air entering at the top it, as it grabs the moisture from the food it becomes heavier/cooler drops and is either pushed out by the newer hotter air entering the chamber or sucked out by the fan and/or the convection in the chimney (paint the chimney black helps with convection). Built a small one a few years ago for drying apple slices, and am just about to build a bigger version to do wheat and oats.

Also had same question. Did science get us confused?

Nice video ! I intend to build this dehydrator here in Florida. Hope the humidity is not a problem.

I like the reuse of the refrigerator. Any concerns with the plastics outgassing?

You can get rid of VOCs and let some fresh air into your home (or fridge in this case) by opening a window, using the exhaust fan in your kitchen or bathroom , or having a mechanical ventilator installed

Just put a small fan to draw out the air and get it cycling. Probably put a solar panel on the fan so it's self powered

Why didn't he stain the mesh a dark color? That would increase the heat transfer and speed the dehydration.

I think that's Australia, increasing the temperature would probably roast the food in fifteen minutes and make the entire dehydrator unit burst into flames and turn to a tiny pile of ash in two hours.

Arizona is the same way. Food cooks before it dehydrates. But it works well in the winter time.

make sure this silver paper is not aluminium

Maybe check out thin gauge sheet metal instead of aluminum foil
