"Not knowing anything is the sweetest life" - Sophocles. The music of Poolz is gorgeous, flowing, dreamy, and the autumn image with the radiance on the water seems to fit the music, but then, the quotation.... I was curious so I looked up where it comes from. It's from Sophocles' tragic play "Ajax" and here's the particular passage of the quotation (lines 550):
Lift him up, lift him hither. He will not shrink
In terror at sight of yonder new-spilt blood,
If he be rightly mine, his father's son.
Early must he be broken to his sire's
Stern rugged code, and grow like-natured with him.
O son, mayst thou prove happier than thy father,
In all else like him, and thou'lt prove not base.
Yet even now might I envy thee herein,
That of these woes thou hast no sense at all.
For the life that is unconscious is most sweet-
Until we learn what joy and sorrow are.
But that once learnt, then midst thy father's foes
Thou must show what thou art, and of what breed.
Till then be nurtured on soft airs, cherishing
Thy tender life, and be thy mother's joy.
So the fuller setting of the quotation is of an ancient aged warrior who is a father, looking at an infant son and both hoping that he'll grow to be courageous, stern, rugged like the father, but also, Sophocles gives this stern and jaded warrior a moment of envy of the sweetness of the infant's life, who has "no sense" or "no knowledge" of the woes of life, and so "the life that is unconscious is the sweetest, until we learn what joy and sorrow are." So that's beautiful, actually, when its both hoping for the child to have knowledge and also envying the sweetness of not knowing. Otherwise, I just thought the quotation taken at random seemed really bleak - not knowing anything is the sweetest life! As in a glib "ignorance is bliss"! Just escape, just avoid, just avoid, shut down... But maybe Sophocles means more like, know and yet remember the peace of not having to know. Sorry for the very long post here, I was really curious what was behind the quotation.
