I do always look at the amplitude to make sure the wheel train and escapement are operating properly. As well, the level movement of the balance is critical for accurate timing.
JD, you’re awesome, you’re the man. Immense enjoyment I get from your videos! I was hot after a watch like that, to become my 3rd in my new-found hobby. But here’s (what little) I know about this problem; the 16 size 992’s in Salesman’s cases were only available in in a pry-off back bezel, not screw off. Someone transferred that 992 to that case, hence the funky fit. I personally don’t like pry-off cases, so I gave up trying to find a screw-off salesman’s (clear glass) bezel. In fact, I’ve never seen a 16s screw-off salesman’s clear-back case! If I’m wrong, someone please correct me. Enjoyable video in any event, JD! Post-Script - you already corrected me, it’s a skeleton and not a salesman’s case. I should have watched last 2 minutes before commenting!
Big thanks for the comment. I now think the case was manufactured by the cwccousa.Com as their Venice model case and made of stainless steel. Even if that is true, it really does a great job displaying the movement.
The case is 2019 vintage and cost 180US and they only made 400. Info from the manufacturer. I also trimmed the case screws so the case back would close properly. Case now a collectible:)
@@JDRichard My impression was that it didn't have the hue of white gold and I guess the hunch was right, but it could be a computer thing too. What a stunning piece. Congrats for the treasure.
The 992 models came with two types of case screws. One uses a domed head case screw and the other case screws are flat head. Perhaps the flat headed screws would provide the needed clearance. Just saying...
Beautiful watch! If it was me I’d would notched the case. I think it would look better but it’s just my opinion. Cleaner look just use a flat end mill.
I wouldn't damage those mounting screws. They are probably original to the movement. One should rework the display back or case so there is clearance. This case is more than likely not original to the movement. You may have to remove some material. it's going to be a challenge. Nice watch. I have a 992 in my collection. G/L.
Great video and for a new person to this hobby, I am learning from all videos that I watch. I have a question, Is the Salesman case original to that movement? If not, that may be why the case does not fit unless the screws are removed.
Hi, just saw this video. I have exactly the same case, and was trying to put a 992 in it (a 1926, so close to the one you had!), and ran into exactly the same issue. I tried thinning down the tops of the screws, but didn't get it exactly down far enough. I was reading through the comments that you half-moon cut the screws. Any way that you could describe that or show it? I'd like to do the same, but not sure what the best way to do it is (before I pull out all my hair). Thanks!
Thanks for the video! What is the spec and price guide You use? I recently bought a 992 Hamilton with the Montgomery dial in near mint to mint online, but I paid 1,700.00 fully cleaned and oiled. I wanna start collecting fine pocket watches.
Look up: Classic Watch Case Co., USA Probably: SOLID STAINLESS STEEL Everything but the crown matches there discription. Crowns are easy enough to swap.
@@JDRichard ebay has several listed. 170 - 195 There are several pocket watches with the case also. Search = salesman case pocket watch My observation. It does not seem to add much price to a watch. Seems most are buying the movements. As long as the case is not a wreck the movement price seems fairly consistent. even with no case.
I would like to learn more about the flip out cases, with a small window in the back. They look original. I cannot even discover a reliable search term.

The amplitude of the wheel is really impressive. Indicator of the quality and good health of the movement.
Thanks for showing us this piece.
You are welcome

I think the longer screw was keeping the back from sitting down where it should. Mine has the screws and sits down tight
N ST The screws were the wrong ones so I cut a half moon on the screw heads in the tight position. All worked out.

This is notching the inside of of the caseback so the screw heads will not interfere with tighten of the caseback, Correct?

I don't believe it is and I think your assumption is correct ref. why it did not fit. It is nice however.:)
The values you stated are a bit inflated, 992s typically go for about $300 +/- depending on value.
Change The screw placement, the screws may bein the wrong hole. That why the screws are different size.

Just used a file, no magic
Great video. I’m a newby collector and tinkerer. I have my father’s 1914 Hamilton 992 and a few others. Could you tell me the lift angle for a 992?
52deg I believe
How much does a watch like that one cost ?
At least 500 bucks
What's the accuracy of this watch here, I mean how many sec + / - do they normally gain!?
+/- 5 sec per day
@@JDRichard not bad at all! Thanks for answering.

Yup. I thought all American pocket watches were uncased and you chose the case. Maybe later ones and smaller 12 size you could buy cased. 💁♂️
You could buy cases watches. I have some of the old catalogs

Notch the case where the screws go so they’re flush.
Correct
