Nice job, Carlos. I always enjoy when you do comparisons like this. In this case you've made a great effort to ensure that what each SDR device was seeing as far as signal / interfeference was as equal as possible. Thanks for sharing your findings!
Is the data you are showing from ADSB Exchange itself or from a application to feed the network for the site? I've been thinking of setting up a feeder for the network as well but haven't seen as cheap a way to go as doing it with a SDR dongle and maybe a Pi
That data is direct from my receiver. The cheapest way I know to set one up is with a Pi. Check with the networks, if they have *low* or no coverage in your area already they will happily set you up with one for free. If you are in the USA they probably have coverage but you never know. I have a video on my channel detailing the process of building one. Super easy stuff.
I meant the display that looked like ADSB exchange website data. Yeah there is reasonably good coverage where I am at less than 2 miles from a Class D airport.
What you are really paying for with the AirSpy is the bandwidth, something you don't really need for ADSB. I guess one would have to decide if the extra 20% is worth the AirSpy premium. In most cases, money would be better spent on reducing feedline losses and getting the antenna in the clear.
SDR = Software Defined Radio. In this case we are talking about a radio receiver that uses a USB port to deliver the sound of what it receives to a computer. I'm specifically focusing on airplane tracking using ADSB on 1090MHz. ADSB - explained here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Dependent_Surveillance-Broadcast Basically all commercial aircraft are requires to have a beacon that transmits data about their flight. Receivers on the ground can receive those messages and decode them to then see said details on a computer screen.
@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity Not interested at all. I have no idea about anything relating to "software". I don't believe computers and ham radio should be mixed. But that's just me. Everyone else in the world can do what ever they like. I'm just not into it. We're all stuck with computers now. But I don't want to have to use one to operate a ham radio.

Nice job Carlos. Love these comparisons.
Thanks Doug! 👍

Thanks! 👍
Fantastic work! I'm curious to see how the ADSBexchange SDR will stack up against the AIRSPY
We shall see, that is literally the data gathering I'm working on right now. ADSBx Orange vs AirSpy.
Thanks for this video 🙂
Glad you like it!

Yup, that is still my receiver's info directly being served by the receiver running on the Pi.
@ okay, thanks looks like I still have more to learn before jumping into this. Thanks for your responses
You need a preamp too.
I might add that to the mix but right now all I'm looking to compare is the performance of the individual SDRs on 1090MHz.

There are also extra bits of DSP that aid in cleaner signals.
What is an SDR?

To each their own. Though this video has nothing to do with ham radio.
@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity I guess not. LOL
