I love the history of food. The knowledge brings added gratitude for the abundance of hearty American cuisine and appreciation for the creative people like you who bring us good recipes. Thanks Rick and Noreen.
Hi Noreen, Oh my!! That looks delicious. What a way to make an otherwise regular hamburger an amazing treat!! And thank you for sharing that bit of Americana. I love learning where our traditions and food history comes from too!! It's so much fun to learn these things!! Thanks again for sharing this wonderful "Chili Size" recipe!! Love, Mary
The first time I had one of these was in 1970 at a little diner in Mountain Center, CA . I'd just finished summiting Mt. San Jacinto with my father and brothers and we stopped for lunch. It came topped with fresh diced tomato, onions, and avocados along with the cheese. I fell in love with them and have been making them ever since. By the way, the top grilled bun is best for sopping up any leftover chili.
I grew up in southern California. My mother's favorite diner food was a Chili Size, and when she had a few extra dollars it was a real treat to go down to the small cafe near our house. I recently ordered one at a Denny's and had to give the server instructions on how to make it because the cook didn't know what it was, and I didn't know why it was called a chili size either. Thanks for the history!
Awww I should have made this for dinner! Saturday I made half of Rick's chili, and I am eating that while watching this. If no one has made Rick's Woodsman Chili, oh it's amazing!
Love your videos and have had great luck following your recipes. I am new to cooking and would love if you could do a video about different cuts of beef (how different cuts are best cooked/served). Keep up the great work!
Apparently the rock I live under never allowed for learning about this but it sounds amazing. I grew up in Eastern Washington state and if that is at restaurants here, it wasn't anything I was ever exposed to. I've also never seen those beef/pork burger patties but bet they will begin showing up soon with the rise in beef prices. Going to have to try it! Thank you for the recipe, Noreen...you are the best!
Being from Michigan, in my 55 years I've never heard of this. Must throw this together! Also was not aware that Wal-Mart had a beef/pork Pattie blend. Good to know!
In the 80s they used to have bingo and sell food at Eagles hall there were burgers hot dogs n chili size. Never exactly knew what it was or why it just wasn’t a chili burger. I just got a burger n hung out listening to the gossip 😂 ty for the lesson
Loved it ! What about flipping that top, toss on some cheese, throw it under the broiler for a minute... Then use that cheesy bread to mop up the plate... (my inner fat kid is thinking out loud here... lol) Thanks for sharing ! Looks Great !
Noreen, is this the same chili of Rick's that you home canned too? Pardon my laziness but you have sooooo many awesome videos to go through to find the answer. :)
Born and raised in SoCal. We used to get them in the 1960's at a chain restaurant called Hof's Hut based in Long Beach. They're still around and chili sizes are available.
third generation 78 year old California native, and I have been eating Chili Size's all my life. Denny's, Coffee Dan's, Colony Kitchen, Hoff's Hut, Woody's and all the independent coffee shops in the 50's served the Chili Size. I'm cooking one tonight! Thanks for the video.

In case Noreen doesn't have time to answer my question about Rick's chili...is this the same one that she also made a video of canning it?
Link is in the description box below the video. Thanks for watching!

OMG a dad memory...he loved chili size
A dad memory for me too! Once a week my dad would pick me up for dinner at Denny's and I usually ordered a chili size. I loved them!
My dad's favorite! Always wondered where the name came from so thank you for sharing. ❤️
Love the story!
I've never heard of this!
Crazy, that I haven't!

How great. I'll have to make these. I'm certain they will beat the fast food ones....you have to look for the chili!

Omg i love u so much good job😍😍😍👏👏👏👏
Tommy's are the best!
Just like in Alabama when you go to a Bar-B-Q place and order a bar-b-q they bring you a bar-b-q pork sandwich.

That is so funny. I just made your dish for a late lunch. :-)
👍yummers
So there’s a burger chain out here & California called Tommy’s .. they serve chili burgers only (I think) maybe it’s the same Tommy? Looks delish
The funny Wikipedia info is that his restaurant was also nicknamed 'Ptomaine Tommy'. ??? Lol!
*How Ines Rolls* I’m from Las Vegas Nevada and we have a Tommy’s also
Here in coastal Southern California in the 1960's, we used to get a chili size at Hof's Hut. They're still around, a family-run business.
Btw we do have Tommy's burgers in California n they call it a Chili burger .
Original Tommy's Burgers rock!!! I think they dropped the chili size and went with chili fry's!!!
Love this! 😂 I love loose burgers, which here are served with chili. Never thought about doing it with a patty! Definitely have to try this!
I grew up and live near MO Rte 66. I have never heard of these before, maybe I am too far north on Rte 66.
When are you going to make some what I ate in the week videos.
I don't do those type of videos. I share recipes. I don't document what I eat for the world to see. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Recipe for Rick's chili please. Love your videos

Interesting story. I’ll take minus the jalapeños.
Ditto, my chili's already hot, no extra peppers required! Maybe a little sour cream though.
How convenient, and tasty, I have all the ingredients to make this...yum!
Off topic, but can it be your girls have graduated?? (:
When I was growing up, this was called a Wagon Wheel
In California we call it just a Chili Burger never heard of Chili size ever ! Born n raised Cali here...
What part? I lived in Southern Cali for 3 years and they were everywhere...
