- How to use the /tellraw command in Minecraft! [1.19.2] I made a tutorial on this command literally six years ago, so it was time to make a more modern version.
It’s super easy to learn, but pretty hard to master. Also the exact same format applies for titles, books, and most text in Minecraft, so this is a very valuable command to learn.

Trust me guys, this is the best command you will ever use (aside from /kill of course)
And it works with cheats off

This only exists because Julian (the creator of the end poem) requested it as a way to obscure text but still have it there (to give you the idea that they are speaking something you cannot comprehend), he's also the reason to why putting "PLAYERNAME" in any text (which includes Tellraw) says the name of the entity that sees the text
it's accessable ingame for the sake of map making
The obfuscate feature is honestly one of my favorites, so cool and useful
@@ghost_ship_supreme If you wanna make the ciphers from Gravity Falls in Minecraft, that’s how you do it! No one can crack a cipher like that! It’s just random, constantly changing text!
@@mbcommandnerd That's not the point. They're not supposed to be cracked, you cannot comprehend what they say because they say nothing
do you know what its called? I cant seem to find like a wiki on it and I'd really like to know more
@@Issactly what what is called?
For bedrock edition:
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"text":"§eHerobrine joined the game"}]}
You can display the scoreboard value too. For example:
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"score":{"name":" ","objective":" "}}]}
/tellraw @a {"rawtext":[{"text":"§e§lName Joined The Game"}]}
Tanks!
this command is my favourite. I’ve let myself use command blocks in my survival world for behind the scenes magic and there is something about having the name of the castle and all the villager stores I’m entering pop up that brings my world together perfectly
i really love the color "reset" it is so vivid and filled with life and love thats why its really rare in nature wich makes it rare , pure and beautiful
the hex version of "reset" is #FFFFFF

at 6:30, the translate feature is based on the lang\*.json files. let's say you have your language set as US english, the file containing all the lines and everything for that language will be stored in lang\en_us.json. If you wanna use a line from the file, you would input {"translate":"the.identifier.for.the.object.eg"}. this will output whatever the button at the top of the pause menu says in the user's selected language. You can edit the lang files with a resource pack to add custom text by just adding a new line in the same style but unless you edit the line for every single available language, it will only work for the one(s) you've added/changed lines to.
and at 3:20, true/false don't need quotations because they're boolean values, strings are usually encased in quote marks but integers, floating points and booleans aren't.
Another great tutorial, keep the good work
You just got yourself a new follower. I was drinking tea at 4:12 and I just burst out laughing and almost choked on the tea. 10/10 expirience, would definitely recommend.👍🏻
*wow*
I’ve known about tellraw forever now but still an amazing command
Honestly, that's something I'd do even without you trying to mess with me
I love this. I’m saving this for tomorrow.
As a person who understands JSON, this was a piece of cake.
I use tellraw frequently but i thought it was only useful for messages! Definetively will be trying it
I finally just realized that Minecraft basically uses jsons in its commands
It is json
It literalls uses json
You are the best bro thanks for teaching those 😊
why the hell is your jump key the q?

The best Tutorial for it👍
awesome video!
tysm this helps alot and while ur doing this tut ur also really funny :)
The format that he is showing in this video for the tellraw command is JSON format with the possible JSON inputs that mojang has encoded into chat functions, welcome to the world of programming if you actually followed this tutorial! UA-cam sends video titles, links, recommended videos, channel names, view counts, like counts, etc in JSON and the UA-cam app or webpage decodeds them and displays them the same as Minecraft is decoding the information for the tellraw command
6:30 Like with the key binds, you have to take a translation string (Minecraft uses them and in the translation files stand, which it should be replaced with.)
It will be fun trolling my cousins one. I have this.😂 Thanks for this amazing video.
I already knew how to use tellraw but good job
Finally something useful
It is easier for people to understand this command who know JSON. Anyways, cool video!
I love JSON
I would like to add that you can just use "" in place of {"text":""}.
/tellraw @a " This is a test" works, if you don't want to change the colors and such.
this works for any of the json formats (I'm pretty sure)
Hey I like this guy's humor.
I think that the Legitimoose tutorial holds up really well
3:24 The "tellraw" seems to take 2 arguments: who should see the message and a json object (Javascript Object Notation) containing the text and how it should be formated. true and false don't need quotations there because true and false are already actual values in Java (and Javascript). If the types of the values don't match, then they are automatically converted to the required type (only string/text needs needs quotations).
The Fitnessgram pacer test part got me too good lmao

the fitnessgram pacer test is a multistage aerobic capacity test that progressively gets more difficult as it continues.
FINALLYYY
if anyone is interested heres an explanation on the computer science coding part behind it.
each group of curly brackets is a "dictionary" (this syntax is exatly like python my best language) meaning that something can be assigned a value *. for example, "text":"hi there" sets the value of "text" in this dictionary to "hi there". Each of these dictionaries is seen as one part of the thing you want in chat, and commas seperate the different values in the dictionary you want to define for the text that will be printed, as well as the seperate dictionaries
The square brackets make an "array" or "list". It literally is just a list of values seperated by commas. or in this case, a list of dictionaries. Without it there would be an error if you tried to make multiple dictionaries
anything in " " is a string, which is a type of variable that is just a 'string' of letters (crazy innit)
the reason true and false arent in " " is because they are not a string. another type of variable in coding is booleans, which can only be yes or no, true or false. They are not identified with " ", just by not misspelling true or false. different people who know different languages might have different opinions (like its a JSON object or it returns 0 or 1 etc) but that doesn't matter all different explanations for the exact same use (in all the languages i know about at least)
"
" just means new line you don't need a dictionary because when the computer looks at it it doesnt see "
", it sees:
"
"
because the "\" is goofy and im not bothered to explain it since it would take a while so just accept "
" is new line.
if you really wanna know (if you even unterstood a word of what i just said lol) just reply and ask
i might answer with a better explanation
or research it
* think of it like an irl dictionary - the word "dumb" is assigned "temporarily unable or unwilling to speak" (in official oxford languages dictionary there are a lot but heres one lol)
so when you check the dictionary for the value of variable "dumb", you get "temporarily unable or unwilling to speak" minecraft checkes the dictionary for the value of "text" and finds whatever you put there. once it constructs the finished striing with all the values you put in the dictionary matching to the right words ("text", "bold", etc.), it prints it to chat.
ok i wanted this to be a short explanation but like no one i know has an attention span these days so this might as well be a whole essay for you sorry
i bet youre not even reading this cuz you do not care at all
bye
the whole format of it is just called JSON

nice scout tf2 reference in the beginning
Nice video i don't no that command even exists thx
I already know the /tellraw command i trolled a lot of players with it then found this video lol yeah use it its cool!
incase people want a little explanation, think of "true and false" as built in to the language, same as any other command would be, and think of things like "aqua" as a book-marked piece of data. its like a shortcut for typing in a hex code kinda thing.
its way more complicated than that, but thats just a basic explanation incase you're curious.
No, the explanation is that this is json which has 5 datatypes. Boolean, number, string, array and object. Only strings need quotation marks.
@@borstenpinsel fair, but that's also quite complicated for someone who has zero understanding of programming
The McLovin ID gets me everytime
3:25 its a bolean in a nutshell it means yes(true) or no(false) due to yes being a 1 and no is a 0 it is already built in all computers i guess xd
its cool but how do i put it on things like items? like i want to make an excalibur with yellow bold text, how do this??
for the record, in Bedrock it’s the same concept except instead of being basically Javascript it’s more like a Json file format, which personally I don’t know too much about Json but from what I do know I think the command in Bedrock is a little broken.
tks by deez tutoral
This could literally ruin friendships
incredible how effective minecraft players are at figuring out how to use dev features without knowing what json syntax is
Bro why this is so complicated 😭 but thanks to the tutorial
i did this like a month ago with a friend that was high on weed, paranoia is now a main factor in his daily minecraft life as well as thinking he said stuff he didnt
Poor HollowedRaven didn't know what was going on
I have that Hawaii driver license sticker on my water bottle 0:48
My friend is a dream stan and i used this to troll him and giving him a ”link to an free dream plushie” and that killed him XD
this little bar on the left side is from command? or is a setting
i have literally never heard of tellraw
how is it so old

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Minecraft's version was 1.17, and I do not have information on any changes or updates beyond that point, including Minecraft 1.19.3. However, I can provide you with information on how to use the `/tellraw` command in Minecraft as of Minecraft 1.17. Keep in mind that the usage may have changed in newer versions.
In Minecraft, the `/tellraw` command allows you to send custom JSON-formatted messages to players or execute other commands. Here's a basic overview of how to use it:
**Command Syntax:**
```
/tellraw
```
- ``: This is the name of the player or the target selector to whom you want to send the message.
- ``: This is the JSON-formatted message you want to send. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data interchange format that allows you to create complex messages with various formatting options.
Here's an example of how to use the `/tellraw` command to send a simple text message to a player:
```java
/tellraw @p {"text":"Hello, world!"}
```
This command will send the message "Hello, world!" to the nearest player (`@p`).
JSON messages can include various formatting options such as color, bold, italic, underlined text, and more. Here's an example with some formatting:
```java
/tellraw @a {"text":"This is a formatted message","color":"red","bold":true,"italic":true}
```
In this example, the message will be displayed in red, with bold and italic text.
Remember that the specific JSON structure may have changed in newer versions of Minecraft, so be sure to consult the in-game help or documentation for Minecraft 1.19.3 or later to ensure you are using the `/tellraw` command correctly in the version you are playing.
If you need more advanced formatting or want to execute commands using `/tellraw`, you may need to use more complex JSON structures, including click events and hover events. Again, consult the documentation or community resources for your specific Minecraft version for detailed information.
I need this for bedrockedition
command in command block : /tellraw [insert anything] {"text":"[insert your text here]"}
It tells me it requires an array such as rawtext. How do i fix that
so may i ask why q is your jump key...
Ah yes the SdKfz 205 Panzerkampfwagen VIII in 2:34 is very good
thx
2:12 or you could just do tellraw @a "message" but for color then yea you need {}
3:26 that's become it doesn't return as a string instead it wants to return an integer value either 0 or 1
tellraw @a {"text":"herobrine joined the game"."color":"yellow"} is that how it works?
does this kinda work in bedrock or is it just a completely new command, i know this is a java tutorial and i dont have that edition
How to I make the little white line at the left disappear when I want somebody to say something?
When you use clickevent, how do you target the player that clicked ?
maybe clickevent adding player name to a scoreboard idk
This would be useful if someone tried to be like Romeo from MCSM Season 2
how to use without comand block? or isi it posible for datapack/sc

7:04 Whats the bedrock command for this?
2:33 SdKfz 205 Panzerkampfwagen VIII be like
vroom, vroom ur dead now
I've got a big question:
So in the /tellraw command you can use clickevents, which essentially offer the player the possibility to click the whole or a part of the message, executing a command. With "{"actions":"run_command","value":""}" you can tell the game which command you want to get executed (Let's say I want a diamond upon clicking the text, I'd have to type "{actions":"run_command","value":"/give @p diamond"}").
Now to my initial question:
Is there a way to use commands, that contain the " symbol? I heared, you can use the /tellraw command in clickevents such as these, but if you try typing "{actions":"run_command","value":"/tellraw {"text":"Photosynthesis"}"}" the game says that command is invalid. I assume it's because the /tellraw command uses ", which also mark the end of the argument "value" and ultimately it confuses the game.
Is there a work-around now? I was told, I could use the /tellraw command for another /tellraw command's clickevent. I guess not, but maybe I just missed something?
Thanks!
Nvm, I found the solution.
In order to use " in an argument like this, you only have to type \ before using the ".
So:
{"actions":"run_command","value":"/tellraw @a {\"text\":\"Photosynthesis\"}"
This allows the game to differentiate between those 2 different kinds of quotation marks and so making the command valid.
Dose this work in Minecraft bedrock or Java because I feel like this is a Java command

1:07 NOT THE FITNESSGRAM PACER TEST
let me explain why you can just type true or false instead of "true" or "false", the thing is, in comas is text like data that isn't a command for the pc, but true or false are a command so they don't need it
idk that is at least undertadeble so yeah, have a great day/night :)
