Thanks for sharing this video. It's wonderful to see Jamaica back then. It was bustling in Kingston and still is today. The buildings in Spanish town were so grand. I left Jamaica as a child in 1983 so this is wonderful history that I never knew . Thank you🤗

The evil sown did not come to full harvest as yet; like people imprisoned for speaking about the criminal injustices under British rule. I think it was called " the act of sedition"; which was a good example of Fascism. And the same as today; witness a one being pulled from under his bed by a so called security thug with a machine gun or a nursing mother being pepper sprayed in a public taxi and no one charged for the offence; not to speak of the total disregard for Rasis Nzinga's and other Rases' Human Rights by the insecurity forces during the COVID. Scam. Do we pay taxes to be imposed upon with injustice by our employees, the Public Servants? It is said the more things change, is the more it remains the same. Hence, the mentality has to change to have permanent and meaningful change. Good day.

My father was born in 1930's Jamaica. My Mother in 1940's Jamaica. I was born in 1960's England. Our children were born in late 1990's and 2000's in The Netherlands / Holland. So my side of family has gone from Jamaica to England to The Netherlands in 3 generations. Still, its nice to see pictures of the environment my parents lived in. And guess what? I remember a rural Jamaica where up to 1979 one was able to leave one's windows and doors open at nights. Except for Kingston, one could get lost at any part of the island without fear of being in the wrong place.
Then there was the matter of guns in Kingston, how did poor people who could hardly afford anything, afford expensive assault rifles? Drug pushing came about after the late 1980's, long after serious gun violence began to rule Kingston. Obviously they were being given the guns.

It seems there's a lot of agreement that the CIA saw the PNP back then as a communist threat, ignoring the fact that there was already a communist party, known as the now defunct WPJ. The other party took advantage of hysteria and fear, by using this perceived threat as their main platform to win an election.

I remember walking on the covered sidewalks on King Street as a child in the 60's and the cream colored buildings @8:25. The memories. Unlike some who think Jamaica was better-off before independence, there are a lot of similarities, then and now. Except in terms of demographic shifts, and changes in crime patterns, etc.
Jamaica today has: more, and bigger banks, more hotels (some locally owned), financial companies all over, higher literacy, more widespread rural electrification, more households with indoor plumbing, more miles of paved road surfaces, etc.
Prime Ministers that reflect origins from diverse walks of life in

The fact remains that from the 1930's till 1962 when Britain gave Jamaica independence, there was little change, and Jamaica remained severely impoverished. As the film depicts, very few blacks can be seen in coastal urban settings, and this pattern only began to change in the 1970's. The apartheid experience of Africa was similar for Jamaica, though not as extreme, thus development was limited for people of color, so it was unlikely that positive change would be easy to come by.

  • @sonicstep
    @sonicstep 9 років тому +17

6:14, I seem to get the impression that the down-town streets of Jamaica were a lot more ordered and better presented back in those days than they are today (but when I think about it old U.K. footage of London has similar apparent order; fewer vehicles, less congestion). There are certainly indicators of colonial oplulence.
I notice comments on the swastika. Those that regard it negatively need to research its history (it long pre-dates the 1930's). Arianism is another thing that was hijacked and warped by Nazis; again if you don't know research it's Persian (Aria)/Iranian roots. Historically those that aim to conquer will pillage in the process and claim things as their own. The Nazis were notorious for such acts (stealing precious property, stealing research knowledge, destroying connections, distorting facts..).!

Did you look carefully to see that NOT ONE Black person was relaxing but always worki ng. I say this without any racist intent but those were times when the rich relied on old money to spend a lot of their time vacationing and galavanting. This is the Feudal mindset, enjoying life at the expense of the poor laborer and included in that, is wealth handed down from Slavery.
Today if someone walked around and there are vacationers, there would be a mix of different ethnicities, a more fair life.

I totally agree, the gun situation was created during the Michael Manley era when he decided to embrace a more socialist political adventure and was openly
flirting with Fidel Castro, whom we all know is America's longest enemy in the region. So the CIA decided to teach Jamaica and other central American countries a lesson.

I find it cool that someone got video footage of places like here so long ago. Youse on here want to just argue about how things went w/o thinking of how amazing it is that we can even see footage like this from that timeframe. we know people did wrong back then & plenty do wrong these days too that likely won't fully be discovered the magnitude of it for a long time, like what is causing climate change. I wonder how rare these recordings on this channel & other similar channels are. Question: Why does the timecode 'TCR' have a time that is so high? 12 hours? Is the original tape that long? What is the reference point in the TCR?

I knew it had to have been a white woman filming. "The 2 hour lunch break club" nothing but black women sleeping and sitting around gossiping. "The light work for .20 cents per day" a black woman breaking down rockstone or just smoking. The black man climbing coconut trees, picking and shelling them might be included. To this day, this stereotype still follow Jamaicans which is why they tend to work many jobs and work very hard to prove people wrong.

The Bahamian archipelago is also on the door step of the world's largest tourism market, and can afford to depend on this otherwise fragile industry. Islands as: the Caymans; Bermuda; and the Turks and Caicos, are mainly off-shore banking centres that shuffle financial papers around, not very sturdy economies. It seems Jamaica is being punished for having a majority of blacks who dare to assert any form of equality, thus scaring off the potential investor. After all, violence there is recent.

All those islands mentioned had few blacks, if any, living on them from the start. A better example would be the Bahamas, and Barbados, but those are independent islands that were poor at independence. The Bahamas is an island chain, so the black populace isn't dominant on all the islands, and black Bajans live in relatively poor conditions, usually in remote parts of the island, not much differently from pre-70's Jamaica.

So these American tourists go by steam boat to the port of Kingston, a drive uphill in to the interior, Hope Gardens, a beach lined with palm trees, The Rodney Memorial in Spanish Town, a sit down farmer market, Kings Street in Kingston, see the Queen Victoria statue in the Victoria park (now called Saint William Grant Park). These trams no longer exists, not in the video were trains that also no longer exist. (Some farmer market traders living on) '...20 cents a day' is shocking, they should of got given welfare and a labour exchange.

Billy Khan They came to Jamaica before there was a country called Germany. They came as indentured servants in 1850's - 60's. My great great Grandfather , plus his four brothers one sister. were of that community and settled in fairy Hill district Portland JA. The family still lives in the ginger bread house he built. My Great great Grandmother was of African and East Indian descent whom he married, my Grand mothers parents. Family name Mueller/Miller.

Have to disagree with you. Look to our neighbors i.e Caymans, Bermuda, Turks. The Caymans and Turks were dependencies of Jamaica up to 1962. You think few blacks were in urban settings in Jamaica ... well few of anybody were in such settings on those neighboring islands but under British protection what are they now? Jamaicans plea for visas to go to those same islands today! Jamaica was primarily agri-based in the 1930's but that was to change and under the Brits would have been best

  • @jaredgrey39

If Jamaica stayed a British Colony then there would be welfare and free movement, it would be a part of Britain. I reckon plenty of British people would live in Jamaica and plenty of Jamaican people live in Britain.

More banks , eletricity, etc. would have come about and probably bigger and better with development anyway. Loas Angeles is not what it used to be in the 1930's, and neither is Dallas. Same with Kingston, the things you mention come about naturally with technology and international economic gentrification. Under the British those things would have been bigger and better since, crime and slackness which has been allowed to take-over the country would not have been tolerated.
