Hi Stephen, another great contribution to Sigil Users everywhere. I just downloaded Sigil 1.3.0 on my Mac today. Do you plan on doing any more tutorials in the future? I purchased your e-book template back in 2017, but to my shame, I have never got around to using it. However, I do have it safely squirrelled away for a 'rainy day'. If you have time and like me, in Scotland, you are rather locked down, perhaps you will update your template tutorials for 2020/21? Hi Stephen, I’ve just watched all of the Sigil videos and paid for the template. Thanks for re-igniting my interest in creating ePubs!! I have all of Liz Castro’s material from years ago, so used to know a lot, but seem to have forgotten a lot of it! Not sure if this would be ‘current’ or best practice now of course. What would be useful to me would be your style of delivery to illustrate a few style points with ePub. Specifically (All with CSS of course): Drop Caps in the opening paragraphs of every chapter. Indent or not subsequent paragraphs Chapter headings: here I see a lot of good formatting in commercial epubs where each chapter starts on the right- hand side in a 2-page layout, some writing and images, soft page-break for the actual writing to start, then cunningly, some control of what appears in the built-in TOC. Built in TOC displays with the cover image on the left. Hard coded TOC tidying up at the end of the project. Not much to think about for you!! I’d happily pay for an updated style sheet to cover some of this. Thanks
Hi Keith. Couple of thoughts and some styling for you to experiment with. There are many ways of styling so it depends on exactly what you want to accomplish. Drop caps can be done, though the styling but may not work for all readers and devices, particularly older ones and consider that people may zoom in/out affecting style. Paste this into your ePub style sheet and then include the 'class' in the tags e.g. /* Simulate drop cap; the pseudo-element will not work with older devices */ .dropCap::first-letter { float: left; font-size: 2em; vertical-align: text-top; background-color: lightgray; padding: 1px; } /* Indent the first line of a paragraph */ .indent { text-indent: 1em; }

Hello. Have watched all your Sigil tutorials. They were very helpful. Thank you so much! But from your videos, I kind of like the idea of having a built-in page editor in the previous versions of Sigil instead of today's version where a separate software needs to be installed. If I go for an older version with the built-in editor, will that in any way affect the quality of the ebook I'd be creating or present any problems?
Jimbo, the older version should produce a usable ePub file. The newer Sigil is updated to include the 'ePub 3' standard, which is capable with audio, video and more. Be aware that older standards like 'ePub 2,' just like computer operating systems, will continue to be supported for a time, but will be retired. This means, eventually, eBook readers may not recognize ePub 2 files. Think floppy disks, music tapes, CDs ... and you get the idea.
I think having to work with two software is madness. Why on earth would they do that? Simple is always best. They are discouraging people from using it.
Just a heads up, but V 1.1.1 is it's own .exe file that auto-saves to the Programs folder (cutting out the extraction and copying steps from this tutorial). Many thanks for the video though, it solves a problem that I didn't think I'd be having (as I was using an older version of Sigil were the page editor was still in it).
Great tute, but PageEdit in my Mac displays the text in a window which either encompasses the entire screen, or, if you decrease its window size by dragging the edges, you see the Sigil window beneath it. The Sigil window also displays text which changes in tandem with code changes, so I'm not sure what advantage PageEdit gives. I'm going to stick with the old version for initial editing, and then open the epud in the new version for final touchup (maybe).
Well thank you very much for this without this Sigil would be useless to me. Still the previous version were far superion even with this now I have to press that botton of Page Edit for every Section of the Ebook. This new version of Sigil are just inferior to the ones with the book view included in the program is sad to see that this great program has just goten so much worse with time and it fills like there is no reason if it was fine before why was it ruinned? However the way Sigil helped me last time for my Bengali Ebook (in Kalpurush font), it is not working with the "PageEdit" as it is not taking each and every font. I am again using Bengali Font (kalpurush) and somehow PageEdit isnt doing the job. Please Help.
Try this Sameer. I suggest using a test ePub first. Open your ePub in Sigil and in Book Browser, right-click on the Fonts folder and 'Add existing files.' Locate your font file on your computer (kalpurush.ttf) and select it. Now you have installed the font in your ePub. Save.
Then you edit the 'stylesheet' (in Styles folder) to include the new font, for example, body { font-family: "Kalpurush"; } @font-face { font-family: "Kalpurush"; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; src: url(../Fonts/kalpurush.ttf); } Remember to save regularly.
Hello I have Sigil 1.20 and I don't know if this method will work for my version. Should i get the older version where the button where you could change from html to book view existed or no?
GarriSun, I have 1.2 also and once you have Page Edit installed, go to Sigil's 'Preferences' and follow the video. The idea is to tell Sigil (in Preferences) where to locate Page Edit on your computer.
@@GarriSun I agree. I can insert an image/file from Sigil and have it show-up in Page Edit. But was not able to insert an image in Page Edit. I don't have a good answer to this right now. Possibly a bug in Page Edit that may be fixed in a future release.
But why would the people who created Sigil actively make worse almost ruin Sigil, with only the code view sigil is very difficult to use I may be exagerating a little but I fell it would be almost unusable for most people.
Just me, I won't comment on the developer's choices but can say that Page Edit is a highly-featured and superior editor, compared to the limited Book View. It is fully integrated with Sigil and continues to be enhanced and updated regularly. This from the main guy Kevin Hendricks in Feb-2015, "It’s [Book View] also in my mind substandard. It gets the job done for quick edits but it’s not as full featured as I’d like. Especially when I’m used to using editors like WordPress’s editor." And more recently (2019) this note from DiapDelaer in the Mobile Read forum, "The reason for the the change is quite simple. Book View sucked. Maintaining it sucked, updating it sucked, and finding workarounds for everything that it broke sucked. Every new feature envisioned had to jump through convoluted hoops just to make sure Book View didn't blow it all up. That sucked. Everything about it sucked. So we chucked it. Just as we warned we were going to do for years. It was a developmental boat anchor and I dance on its grave every single night."
Hi have just downloaded Sigil 1.1.0 and PageEdit 1.1.1 and if I edit in PageEdit the code in Sigil updates but if I change code in Sigil the PageEdit file does not update. I have set PageEdit as the editor in the Sigil preferences but is there another setting or something I need to set to reflect changes both ways thanks for the tutorial

What I noticed, Page Edit may be set on 'Preview' (eye icon) where no edit/save is possible. In Page Edit, locate the 'Pencil' or 'Eye' icon to toggle between Edit and Preview modes.
Elizabeth, I don't have a Mac handy to check exactly how this works. It should be a similar idea as with PC, in that you locate Page Edit in your Mac 'Applications' folder. Another possibility is to open your ePub in Sigil, then right-click on a document (in Sigil's left column in the 'Text' folder) and from the context menu choose 'Open With.' This should allow you find Page Edit on your Mac Applications folder, to open the document with. And noting that you can find user guides on this page (scroll down) that may provide some more information, generally. github.com/Sigil-Ebook
I just did it on Mac following this tutorial and it's quite simple. It's really really similar, just give it a try! You just need to download in GitHube the Pageview file that ends with .txz

I noticed that when the Sigil window is made small, the icons are hidden, but accessed via a dropdown menu. If this is the case, look for two right arrows >> and click them. OR check your 'View' menu: Toolbar / Edit is ticked

Hey 12th. Yes, Page Edit is a separate, though synced-with-Sigil program. The two offer a different, but related experience.

What if my book pages are in .html instead of .xhtml? PageEdit doesn't seem to support html.

They should never have separated the book view from the Sigil app. I swear some people want things to be complex that don't need to be.

Nir, Sigil have a version for Linux. Do a search for Sigil Ubuntu and see what shows up.
