- Rabaul, Papua New Guinea was known as the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ for its spectacular deep-water harbour and natural beauty. It is home to two volcanoes that flank the harbour, Mt. Vulcan and Mt. Tavurvur. In 1994, both volcanoes erupted and buried the town.
