    The main thing about Lexus and Toyota is the build quality. The steering feels nice and firm (not overly assisted) and they just drive straight. On a Corolla or something its a tin can, but I have a Camry V6 that rides like a rock. 2009 XLE with 47,500 miles (you read that right) . You look in the fender well and see the whole body is filled with sound deadening from the factory. Its things like that that make me a Toyota fanboy.

    The mythical TVS GS400 man finally exposed. Great video.
    Daves car feels more planted likely due to the very light weight enkei wheels. I believe theyre around 18.5lbs each. As well as the coilovers.
    Forward momentum- The 18 inch gs460 wheels you have on your car are heavy. Ive weighed them before... i believe 26-28lbs each from memory. Heavier than stock GS wheels 22-23lbs each.
    Swapping to lighter wheels would improve braking acceleration and handling on your car greatly!

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks! He weighed the Enkei wheels and I believe they were 22lbs (edit, see below) or so each. Heavier than we thought. Plus he has heavier tires, so I don’t think that’s the difference at the corners because it might be nearly a wash. I really think it’s the bracing, taller tires, coilovers, and more OEM bushings in comparison to my stiff aftermarket bushings in places.

    • @DanWeinbrand
      @DanWeinbrand 2 місяці тому

      @ForwardMomentum heavier than I thought. Do we know what the specs are on the wheels? 18x9 ish?

    • @David-98GS4
      @David-98GS4 2 місяці тому +1

      These PF01’s are 18x 9.5, +35, 20.6lbs. and the wheel tire combo, came it at 47.4 lbs. So these 255/45 series tires aren’t the lightest but I agree with you lighter setups definitely contribute to better dynamic performance. However with the extra 150 whp / 100wtq it’s not nearly as dramatic of a difference when it comes to acceleration. I wanted a very compliant ride with this setup, my other wheel/tire combo is more performance oriented. I know we all enjoy making these incrementally better, modern cars simply aren’t built with lasting quality like this anymore.

    • @olegkulyak

    I have owned an 01 GS300 (got wrecked) and now I own an 01 GS430. Same exact spec/color on each. Same exact suspension mods (Coilovers, swaybars,) and tire setup. The 430 is way way quicker, it is not subtle at all. Its a huge difference. I was shocked driving the GS430 home. This car is not speed contender in comparison to sports cars today, but the 430 will easily be faster than most cars on the road, new or old. The exhaust note is also much different, the 3UZ has a really good tone.
    As far as handling goes, I want to say the 430 has less understeer. BUT that may just be me getting better at driving the platform.
    Surprisingly, the biggest difference in fun factor is that the 430 does not do donuts in the rain the way the 300 did (due to the difference in gearing). The 300 used to get pretty sideways on U turns if I wanted. The 430 is a lot harder to do that in for some reason. Still good fun for an open diff car.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому +2

      A supercharger and LSD will make u-turns and doughnuts quite the adventure in the 430 with VSC off, should you desire that level of fun again. But yes, you’re correct, the 3.2 rear in the 430 vs the 3.9 in the 300 definitely has an impact on initial punch and revs.

    Great video.! That 98 GS 400 is absolutely bad ass with 400 rwhp!
    Plus looks great and super clean.
    I would much rather go with a power adder on the 1UZ than a Chevrolet 6.0 LS swap which I was looking into for my GS 300. There is a guy locally who did a LS 6.0 automatic that puts down 463 hp at the wheels . His was a 2000. GS 400 with a trashed 1UZ. So that’s why he went with a LS engine. Cheap and plentiful.
    Nicely done I would say and also very quiet.
    If I had a GS400 I would go with a power adder like you both did. But being a GS 300 a LS engine conversion is the way to go for me.

      The lower gears would give a huge advantage in a dig race. Even with about 20% less power, I bet the red car would edge the white one in a 1/4mile. It seems like with the 6speed you would have just kept the standard 3:73 gears? The 6speed should have already had an extra tall highway gear, you must be able to get great gas mileage when you’re trying?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому

      The problem with the 3.7 is it just ripped the rear tires up in 1st gear and it required constant shifting for a poor daily driving experience. I really think the white car would pass me after 60 or so. It just rips up top. We both have 5 speed manuals that are nearly identical to the AT ratios. The CD9 6-speed just adds another shift into the mix; there wasn’t really a benefit at all (aside from being a glamorous option). A drag race would be very interesting though!

      @@ForwardMomentum I barely remembered that story, I had the same exact 92 SE-5spd and totally remember the stupid VTC gears clicking and clacking. I got so tired of them even wired up a toggle switch to ground them out when I couldn't take it any more. Variable length intake runners, COP ignition, VVT, it was definitely ahead of its peers, too bad the valvetrain wasn't quite ready for primetime. I did run some nitrous with the help of the JWT daughter board and it made stupid torque for an NA3.0. I never liked the temperamental nature of bottle pressure in relation to the fuel delivery needs, I overheated the bottle many times and pressure would get to 1200+ and man it detonated when it ran lean because of stock injectors, happened probably a dozen times, and it was scary. Fortunately I never blew it up, the VE30DE bottom end was so stout!

      @@ThatMaximaKid Oh the mighty VQ! I had the cousin, 98 I30-T w 5spd VLSD. Once put on a MEVI intake manifold, if you remember that one, along with a Stillen Vortech non-intercooled SC kit and made 326 fwhp and maybe 270wtq, not too shabby. It was a blast and pretty darn quick for its size, mass was considerably less than the 2GS. However it lacked refinement and front engine/ rwd which are so much better to drive. Also Toyota was in its absolute prime, Japanese stock market hadn't fully collapsed yet, and they built one for the ages with these cars along with the LS and SC cars of the era. I doubt we'll ever experience anything like that again in the automotive industry.

    starting around the 19 minute mark you point out that this car feels planted whereas yours feels "shuddery". that is probably due to the fact that when the suspension mods were done, compliance was lost on both this and your car, but when he went to a dimensionally larger tire, he gained some back. the spring and struts are still quick, but, the larger tire has a larger footprint and more interior volume, allowing for great lateral stability and more cushion than a stock wheel/tire would have provided. the tires are the stars in this setup.

    • @David-98GS4
      @David-98GS4 2 місяці тому +1

      Appreciate your insight! Yes once we increase the stiffness of the springs on the 2GS, depending on rate, it does tend to overwhelm the chassis somewhat. Having used subframe braces in past vehicles, I remembered how much it improved driving dynamics and overall enjoyment of the car. Enter the SC430 bracing, which brings the stiffness way up into what I'd estimate is a 30k+ Nm/degree range, allowing the suspension to perform as intended rather than the chassis flexing having to absorb all that energy, acting like a twisting spring. Pretty sure with the right tires I could get a 3 wheel going now lol. Also the lack of internals squeaks, rattles and otherwise shudder tells this story well. Definitely agree, these tires are standouts on their own but its really the sum of the parts all working in concert.

    Awesome 2GS! Great build! Are you on ClubLexus? I have a few questions if you have time to answer them? So the SC430 bracing, those pieces just unbolt from a donor SC? Are they a straight forward install on the GS? Or was there anything that needed to be worked with the install? I didn’t notice an A/C condenser, are you still running the A/C? Did you look at swapping to an aluminum fan shroud for an IS or Supra? Last question, have you considered upgrading to the 3UZ ECU? You would be able to run the smaller throttlebody, and the ECU is much more tunable so you would not have to run the Piggybacks. If you find a 3UZ donor vehicle, you could pull the wiring harness, the ECU, gas pedal, and the throttlebody. Then you can run the 1wire Bosch Knock sensors that are a big upgrade and also the smaller style coils which an upgrade from the older coils. I believe you would also be able to run the Wide Band O2 sensors. Just an idea?

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому

      Hey - not sure if you’re asking me or David, but I’ll assume him. Neither of us are active on ClubLexus. Here’s what I know: braces he will comment on here. A/C is still in. The condenser is sandwiched and hard to see. No real benefit to going to aluminum fan shroud. No need to go to all the work of swapping to a 3UZ ECU and associated harnesses when the car runs so well as-is. At that point a standalone would probably be a better option. Hope that helps!

    • @davew9258

      I am looking at adding some boost to mine, and was just trying to find learn if he had considered the 3UZ ECU, or if he decided this was the better path? He mentioned that he wished he had the newer style throttlebody that’s smaller, do you know if he still running the original, pink injectors? Or if he had swapped them to something a little bigger? The aluminum shroud doesn’t offer any performance benefits, but it would complement that gorgeous aluminum radiator, and then he could also run some low profile fans if ever wanted to. Thanks for the reply! Great video

It does require some custom elements but overall the fitment is correct and it Greatly enhances chassis refinement. Alum fan shroud could be neat but unnecessary as the stock fan setup is plenty efficient and doesn't require finding space/ parts for a purge tank, however shiny alum could look pretty cool. At one time I had considered the 3UZ harness and various components as you described. Really what settled it for me was all the tuning/ dynos I have seen thus far seemed rather lackluster and overall not that impressive. Our stock timing is pretty safe, for modest boost (

I heard, if you do things like donuts in gs300 on dry asphalt, your torque convertor will go bad quite fast. Will the same would happen with 430? If so, why then? It is even safe to go out of the turn sliding a bit on wet conditions even accidentally? Should trans cooler help with that? Or if i want to do things like that just simply need to manual swap it? Also, the winter is coming, so if i will do some kind of drifting in snow, will that also be a high risk of torque convertor failure? Or on snow it will be all right? Thanks 😁

If you want to make your GS430 smoke the rear tires at will, just swap the rear end out of a GS300 that has the lower gears and weld the spider gears and you can burn the tires right off the rims

    Cool car. One think I've noticed in your reviews is you don't really show off the cars well. Granny shifting and short shifting isn't really what the viewers want to see. Show the rev limiter and a couple pulls like every other reviewer.

      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому +25

      Did you watch the entire video? Apparently not. I hit the limiter and did more than a “couple pulls.” I try not to make it a regular practice to jump into someone else’s car and bang the limiter on every shift, especially on public roads.

      Yeah I assure you he wasn't taking it easy. Unfortunately I feel like videos are never able to give a realistic impression of speed. Next time we may go line them up at a nearby tree, and really see what they can do. 😎

    its a nice car, but 3 piggybacks is just asking for trouble..... if yall can figure out the mechanicals for the blower, put a standalone in the car.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому

      Meh. Been running like this for years. No argument that a stand-alone would be better, but between the initial cost and custom loom, neither of us are looking to drop $2500 to get a little timing control.

    • @bdub215
      @bdub215 2 місяці тому

      @ForwardMomentum timing control, flex fuel, vvti control and engine protections. Piggybacks won't help if and when you should run into issues....
      Its the small things like that move a good build to a meaningful one.

    • @ForwardMomentum
      @ForwardMomentum  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, we’re well aware of the benefits. Not our first rodeo. It can be safely done with piggybacks so for the time being, we’ll just play with fire for a few more years.

    • @David-98GS4
      @David-98GS4 2 місяці тому

      The piggybacks we are using have been reliable and produced measurable, safe results, 60% power increase is not too bad really. No denying a standalone could offer greater control in some areas and allow for a bit more power. VVTi control would provide little gains with stock cams, especially for an FI car, where we could simply pulley down if we wanted to move more air. Going to a SA we'd probably only gain ~10% "safe" power increase, if that. To really get the value from such an investment, the rods and pistons would need to be upgraded in order to run more boost and on top of that maybe end up needing a stronger clutch and DS too. So its either, All IN $10k++ for the SA, harness, engine rebuild, plus more parts, seems like a slippery slope! Or simply enjoy the cars for what they are in current form, classy, reliable and decently quick antiques : )

      @@bdub215 Last thing I will say, if LINK or Haltech offered a PNP version for the VVti like they do for other popular models, then it would be far easier to justify getting one.
