EPISODE 90.
In this episode we start by looking at sailing yacht rigs in general - we discuss some of the most common types of sails and rigs and how to tell them apart, with help from some examples in Port Townsend. Then we have a closer look at Tally Ho’s original sailplan before meeting some of the people who have been involved in planning her new rig.
We have to do some detective work to determine the changes that were made to Tally Ho’s rig in 1927 - the year she won the Fastnet race - but finally we are confident in the dimensions and ready to draw a new sailplan and order the sail cloth that will become Tally Ho’s sails.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I certainly was relieved when the end of video came and there was no required test over sail types. Whew... Quite an amazing story.
The test is coming next week 😧😖 $20 fee if you flunk !! Leo will make fortune !!! I think I will just send him the money and skip the test !!!!!!

lol, i sat there and felt like back then when i was a kid in sailing-school.
What a series this is, it’s started out as saving a boat, it’s turned into so much more for so many people. It’s saved a piece of history but has impacted so many peoples lives, I suspect this video series will remain as important as the boat itself.
I have watched from the very first one and honestly, I thought there was no way it was ever going to be completed. I thought lets see how far he gets before he abandons it...
OH how wrong I was.
This series will be a teaching tool in the future. Taught me more about wooden boat construction than any other source. Very happily assured he will get it in the water and has apparently kept the majority of his sanity.
Hi Leo. I gave the same offer to Steve and Alix over at Arabella. Years from now when you are sailing Tally Ho and you visit Copenhagen (and you should) give me a poke online and I will com by where you are moored bringing all the ingrediencies for a traditional Danish Open deck sandwich lunch. The traditional way is that each person "constructs" their own sandwich at the table seleting the toppings of choice. You need to be moored for at least two days as their will bee beer and snaps and some of you will get very drunk. It is inevitable

Hi Leo, I have enjoyed your videos from the beginning. I'm 73 and was originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. My Grandfather, Charles Young, Made sails for the original Bluenose. He also made a sail for the first Canadian solo sailor who circumvented the world. Charles passed away at the age of 87 in 1952.
I can't wait to see the maiden voyage of the Tally Ho and look forward to all the videos leading up to that day. take care and travel well.

I found Tally Ho about a week ago, and binge watched every episode, some I even watched twice like Steve Cross. I love the passion, have great respect for Leo and all those whom have taken part in creating this incredible boat. In my opinion the best content on YT and now eagerly awaiting the next episode.

@@moonshine3333 Lol, the same, lofting went over my head and still does, especially with the math cause I'm a bit stupid there, but after watching twice I got the gist of it and a picture in head. My talent is in my hands and I come from a carpentry background, I guess that's the part that got me hooked.
I love it when he introduces us to other craftspeople and widens the perspective even more, while also being an excellent teacher himself.

I met Jim in the ferry lineup in PT. I had a dinky little stitch-n-glue rowboat that I had just started building on the roof rack of my car. He came over and was super enthusiastic and I remember him being incredibly knowledgeable... and giving me far too much credit for what I had done! Clearly the man is an endless well of enthusiasm and knowledge, and it's great to get some background on the guy after my chance encounter, and to see how he's helping out Tally Ho.
I got that same feeling from his time in this video, he just seem so excited and enthusiastic. That is the kind of people you want around you on a project like this.

Every industry has it's own nomenclature. A wide understanding of many industries and their phrasing and word choice is key. Also a huge general vocabulary helps. That said I am terrible at scrabble in two languages. I am absolute shite at scrabble. It's the placement of the words. I always botch it. It's not the end of the world though. I can at least console myself with a few beers whilst watching an improbable almost impossible thing being made from wood, blood, sweat and tears and at the moment probably frozen icicles on the eyes. I raise a beer to you Pete (mysterious unknown dude on youtube) ;)

I keep wondering who the down voters are and why?
Rigging is most fascinating...re-rigging a rescued boat even more so...I re-rigged a yard find this past summer. A 30 foot race boat had been knocked over and damaged in a storm some years ago while on the hard and I was able to acquire the boat quite cheaply....it had a new rig (used) from sister vessel (one design boat)...I was able to fit the replacement rig with a combination of gear from the damaged old mast and serviceable boom. between the two masts and booms I got one rig with a spare set of shrouds...I also rebuilt the running backstay with Dyneema...all quite fun. A month after purchase and lots of work I was sailing the 40 year old boat. I will be racing it this coming season in a local casual Friday night series.
Is anyone else interested in buying a frameable copy of Tally Ho,s sail plan or lofting drawing to help with sail expenses? I am.
If so, would you consider doing that Leo?

Been watching from Toronto since the day you built your shed. When you pointed at that little toy boat and said, this is the style boat I crossed the Atlantic in I had to go into a larger room just to hold the new, even greater respect I had for you as a sailor.

So many details (Yes, so many more to hear about!) - Just like you did with forging the bronze I hope you will be doing video highlights of making the sails and the rig. Would love to hear more about the sail cloth choices and which you choose (material, weave of fibers, etc). I really enjoy all the details and hearing about why you are making the choices you are making for Tally Ho and your future sailing adventures. Also noticed The Schooner Adventuress (Number 15 on the main sail) in your sail boat review when talking with the sail maker. Wonderful ship and story.
My father Basil Payne, at the age of 14, was the youngest crew member on his godfather's, Lord Stalbridge, Tally Ho. No only did they win the Fasnet ... there were one of very few boats that even finished. Terrible weather.

Hi Master Builder, The Fastnet race I race it in 73 &75, Do your rig&sail plan as you want, taking car of your very long expérience of all the boat you sail on. The photo of Tally' Ho in the Fastnet is the Best. Just do it (with the modernity that you can use.!!!). Bon courage and keep you safe.

This made me smile so hard. The very idea of the complexity of the rigging, just blew me away. I got completely choked up at the idea of replicating that photo. What a magnificent act of beauty. The shear audacity of pushing forward to create such a thing of awesome beauty makes my heart ache. This is so wonderful.
I hope Leo gets to see that recreated picture with his own eyes. I had a nice sloop for many years and often had bystanders tell me how pretty it looked with the sails full. I never got to see it because I was always on the boat.

I remember the one where you detailed the whole ship of Theseus idea. You blow my mind. Words fail me. When we are being guided by people who haven't done one hundredth of the study of any metier to the degree that you have with boat building. The intense thought. The decisions. Oh Captain my Captain! Your videos bring me the utmost joy, to know that there is a person who gives every fibre of their being over to the pursuit of an excellence in their craft. I grew up with that 1927 photo on the wall , in the den .started drawing yachts at 5 yrs old,when i started sailing on dads yacht..(was rebuilt like Talley ho.) 12 yrs old in 1970 drew wings on the bulb of the fin keel. 14 yrs before aussies took the cup. Started after school traditional boat builders at thirteen .Still fixing boats ,and living on my Carvel Marconi sloop ,I bought and restored during lock down .Leo i can't wait to sea her sailing.
Very fine general study of sail and mast, Leo. I covered much of this in a dramatic way in my Thriller novel, The Whaler Fortune - set in British 1786 on a square rigged whaler coming out of the Greenland Dock (for those interested). This educational presentation was well done and it's gonna be crazy when it's rigging time on Tally Ho.

Leo. Many thanks for a full and informative sail and rig tutorial. Your use of back up diagrams is well thought out and put together. I am from the other world of boat building, with it's heart in Cornwall. For nearly 25 years I was part of the world of catamarans, lead by a prolific designer/builder, James Wharram. One of the rigs that came from his design studio was the modified gaff rig, using a fully enclosed sail similar to the Freedom sail. Designed for loose footing or boom control, it is an economic, reliable mainsail design, suited for cruising catamaran use as either a main or schooner set up. I have followed your story with Tally Ho from day one and marvel at your application, precision and planning of the project. Please keep going!

Probably was a final test after his apprenticeship to make a vest with every type of sail stitch needed to make a sail. Make the vest right, you graduate. Don't, and its back to class.

During the week I build ( actually my craftsman do ) million-dollar homes as a PM. What's so impressive about Leo is how he breaks everything down into small steps. Then he executes it on the highest level. Leo, you set an amazing example of how any project should be handled. But of course, we all know there is also the LEO-FACTOR that comes to light in every video. The latest one was just a small window of how deep you process every single aspect. I know little about sailing, so all that fabric hanging on just one mast amazes me. The material must be something very unique along with the way it's mounted to the boat in order to withstand the forces must be very special.

This is truly amazing to watch. I have spent three days now watching these episodes from the beginning and I’m up to 62 now.
You aren’t just rescuing and old ship Leo... You are creating a great work of art.
I have a new found respect for the amount of time, hard work, love, and blood, sweat and tears that ship builders must have had to build tall ships without the advantage of modern tools and transportation.
I can’t wait to see the final product of your labor to restore this work of art.

I’m not sure how much off cut material you’ll have from your sails but I would absolutely buy some merch made from it.
. . .Anyway, like I was sayin', sail is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, sail-kabobs, sail creole, sail gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple sail, lemon sail, coconut sail, pepper sail, sail soup, sail stew, sail salad, sail and potatoes, sail burger, sail sandwich. That- that's about it.
I had real withdrawal symptoms here until now.
Same, I just caught up so this is the first one I’ve had to wait for, hoping to see her in person one day!!

Remarkable machines? Yep.
Carbon-fibre construction? Yep.
Flying on hydrofoils? Yep.
Capable of 60+ mph? Yep.
Sailing? Um...
I burst into tears and came running back to you and Tally Ho - a proven race winner combining elegance and breathtaking craftsmanship. Oh, and quite a nice ol' wooden boat, too. ;-)
Wouldn't it be great to see yacht racing return to the glory days: more sailing, less flying, and the sheer beauty of those thoroughbred J Class babes...
I think I shall never again watch an America's Cup. What they have been doing is an abomination. Maybe soon the crew will simply sit in a chair and don virtual reality headsets. Call it sailing. Egads!
Fantastic Leo ! My name is Dan, I do woodwork, mostly building unconventional guitars and musical instruments. I’ve spent many years on the Delaware river, 8 ft tide in my part, in “Pop Pop”, a 14 ft aluminum boat with a 20 hp outboard. A river can bite, never the same, and the learning curve has been wonderful, doing things like crossing a wing dam up stream up the rushing water in a broken piece of the dam. We were right on the top, engine full throttle, just stuck, if either of us sneezed, we would be upside down sideways. So, I’ve always wanted to build a wooden boat, walking in the footsteps of Joshua Slockem (so?). Or now in the footsteps of you. I’ve been following from the beginning, videos very well done, project amazing. Just wanted to finally ramble, understanding is quite a challenge, and you can color me addicted., I just took about 20 screen shots of your sail plans, to go back and learn. Kudos to you and your building family, I hope to meet you someday, a dream. I’m 63, but much younger on/in the water. So I’ll be back, thank you !

As far as I understand it the modern term 'clue' and the nautical word 'clew' do come from a common root to do with cord or rope.

I have always loved the idea of a square s'l for for downwind sailing in the trades. that gets rid of all jibing problems and preventers, running backstays, whisker poles and the boom digging into the swells. Seems so much easier to handle for downwind work. And they look so cool on a Gaff rigged boat!!

Thanks for that Leo. I am 76yo and been sailing since I was 15 and was often confused by sail plan terminology. I have saved this video for future reference. Love your sketches by the way, you have another talent!
Loved your sketches of the different rigs - I suppose historically the junk rig was also pretty significant. Fair winds ~~~~~_/) ~~~~
A junk rig is a balanced LUG sail more or less rectangular in shape. ... Unlike the western lug sail, it is separated into several horizontal sections by a series of fairly rigid battens. These battens are almost always laced to the outside rather than positioned in pockets. I thought the same, so a Junk is a Lug.
