- We Weren't Expecting That!
Welcome back to another Immersion Fiji ocean adventure. In this video, I take our customer relations manager Elenoa out bluewater fishing for the first time in her life. The conditions were perfect and it wasn't long before we encountered some big yellowfin tuna boiling on the surface. While we were making our way to the yellowfin action a Black Marlin smashed one of our lures and we were hooked up. The following 90 minutes were an epic battle. Elenoa did such a fantastic job, the first time using a fishing rod, fighting a big marlin. Then a shark looking for an easy meal came in and the battle went next level.
Imagine all this being your first-ever experience of bluewater fishing.
We had such a great day and definitely earned a swim to cool off and check out the stunning coral reefs and underwater life.
Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed filming it for you.

Thanks for watching 🤙
Ohhh what a day!!...enjoyed my self Naka Mike for an awesome experience
It was a lot of fun matey!
You did so well too 👍👌🤙👊
Well done EleNoa! Maybe ask Mike to take you jigging for coral trout next time, much tastier and WAY less work.... A Marlin though is something you'll never forget, so congratulations
Nice work. I caught a 80-90kg striped marlin about 3 weeks ago on one of the charters on the main island. Similar situation to you. Was expecting something different, not far from a sea mount. Also had a couple of bull sharks interested. Fight was about 45 minutes and I felt it for days afterwards. Nice fish and great release!
Awesome, I love striped marlin 👌
Yeah the sharks here in Fiji are no joke 🤦♂️
Always good to see them swim away strong Thanks for watching mate 🙏
That's epic, awesome to see! Good job guys
Thanks mate
We need to catch up next time you’re in town 🍻 😉

Thanks for watching mate 👍
Love fishing in Savusavu so diverse.
So much to explore here.
Thanks for watching 🤙
Well done Noah! For your first time on the rod to fight a decent sized black like that is a top effort!!!! I look forward to meeting you and planning out trip over Christmas this year 🙂
@michael - I won't be a Marlin noob this time, caught a stripe on lures in late May and then 2 weeks ago I was out deep jigging off Coffs in 140m catching pearlies and nannygai, decided at the end of the day to send a livey down and it got eaten by a (and I kid you not) 130kg blue marlin, in the middle of winter! It was my topwater set-up and I only had an 80lb leader to a single heavy gauge 6/0 livebait hook, but with a light drag, not much line and my deckie carefully driving the boat we were able to fight it to a standstill over 2.5 hours. We weren't able to touch the bill but if I'd had a tag pole we could have tagged it and I held the leader, so I'm calling it a catch especially on such light and inappropriate gear
Can't wait for our overnighter, there will be some Bluewater and topwater action for sure!
Wow sounds like the blue was an epic fight on that gear.
Looking forward to having you guys back here for more adventures.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment mate 🤙👍🙌
First time fishing and no harness just gimbal, well done alot of big blokes would of even struggled with that 🤣 killed it
Noa was freaking amazing. It blows me away that this is the first time she has ever used a fishing rod and she nailed it.
Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment 🤙
If you can find a trench 600 - 2000 feet deep you will catch Opakapaka in Fiji. The Fijians didn't even have a name for them as traditionally they couldn't fish that deep. Good luck winding them in!
Thanks for sharing and watching 👍
Great stuff. I’m heading to Fiji next June. Do you fish for dog tooth and gt?
Hi there, yes absolutely.
If you reach out through our website at www.immersionfiji.com we will be able to help you out. Thanks for watching 🙏
How long was the battle to get the Marlin on board? It looked like you were exhausted afterwards! I hope business is good!
Hi mate, all up it was around 90 minutes.
With no breeze and all that sunshine it was hard work for sure.
My arms were dead by the time we we’re lifting it for the photo. So looking back I think it was probably more like 80kg to 100kg
Thanks for watching 🤙
@ImmersionFiji that was awesome! ....First fishing a rod and reel
... that's crazy!!! Well done Eleanor!!! I'm a little jealous!!!
Why let it go
Because it’s a magnificent fish that is way more than we need to eat. Now someone else can have the thrill of catching such a fish.
Thanks for watching 👍
Nice marlin mate. May I ask what type of hooks you are using and size, brand / gauge etc? Thanks.
Hi mate, thanks 👍
I use anything from 10/0 to 12/0 and no specific brand. I pretty much get whatever I can get here on the island.
Thanks for watching mate 👍
The fish been hurt why let it go shark will attack that fish.
We drove away from the shark and made sure the fish was fighting fit again before releasing.
Thanks for watching 🙏
