"Steve Albini and working with him changed the course of my life. He taught me so much about music, and life. Steve was a great friend - wise, kind and generous. I am so grateful." - pj harvey
Yeah pretty underrated compared to the plastic pop dolls... but who cares? Pj Harvey is one of the most amazing, unforgettable girls ever in music history! My favorite ever! But at the right time...She's like Patti Smith from the 90s but better!
I've had a big crush on her since the 90's. Her confidence, earthy natural sexiness, and huge talent and creativity are simply magnetic, and never more on display than in this video.
@@jrwhite3950I would not describe her as timid in person. She has a very unpretentious and dignified attitude yet always comes across as confident and assured about her artistic visions.
That might be a good thing though. We could then just get rid of Russia, the land of the think they're free, and some other tiny place we aren't allowed to mention.
@jens2049 Rock n roll is a unique thing - blues based and highly rhythmic. Her other albums are great, but they're not rock n roll records. The first 2 records are loud and nasty rock n roll records and I personally like them more for it. That's all I was getting at.
I agree 100%! I mean how could you possibly be bored with her hot tunes, deep lyrics and those wild-ass improvisations? They all mesh together for a fascinating artist. I loved her from the very first time that I saw her. STILL just totally unbelievable.
This album holds a seriously special place in my heart. It was the first album I bought at the old Tower Records in Austin, Tx on The Drag after moving there at 17 in 1993. Not only is it a brilliantly powerful album, song and performance wise, it is also a masterclass at simplistic studio techniques. The whole album screams my first hard earned freedom, finally leaving New Orleans, true independence at that young age. I will always cherish this.
I think what people may have a hard time understanding about PJ is her authenticity and lack of pretension. Music is force fed and manufactured and churned out in such a way that we become accustomed to what we THINK we like, because it's safe and simple and popular. Modern music and modern audiences don't want artists that challenge us or take us outside of our safety zone, which is exactly what Ms. Harvey encompasses. The thing is, she doesn't even realize she's doing it because it just...comes OUT of her; it's so organic and yes, raw. I doubt she even realizes (or cares) what a musical genius she is or the influence she's had and will continue to for a long time. All hail PJH.
Yes.....what you said totally encapsulates how I feel about it...no one wants to be challenged and want to stay in their safe little comfort zones and never leave...it sickening!
It is authentic but at the same time her first five or six albums the protagonist is never her (male, female, mythical is the voices in the songs..)... It is always a character, like subtler Bowie really. And ways she was in costume basically on stage and how she is quite reserved and shy but onstage is larger than life reminds me of Bowie.
This doesn't challenge me, or takes out outside my 'safety zone' This just a piece of good sleazy sounding rock, it's nothing new. All of her stiff is great which is why she sells out concert, shifts albums, top charts, and is highly critically acclaimed. And her more recent output is better than her early stuff.
listened to Rid of Me last night - hadn't played in a while. It's just simply a masterpiece. the whole thing. Then tension in songs like man-size and yuri g is just phenomenal. That is the word for the whole album "tension", and phenomenal would be the album's rating.
Wow what a muso you are. It really is amazing these days the way ppl fawn over producers. They're only doing the job they're meant to be doing. They're just like the guy who frames some masterpiece is all. They didn't paint it, they just put it in a decent frame and hung it well. She would have made just as a song whoever produced it. This 'producer awe' that has got so fashionable in recent is so meh. It's like ppl thinking they're smart just because they read credits.
I don’t think there’s a hotter music video of a female artist than this one. Jesus help me. The ending of just her voice when the music goes silent is the cherry on top. 1:06-1:18 is the hottest bit for me
It would be without the fake American accent, and the FACT that nobody in England ever calls it 'gasoline'. The Brits don't need to pander to Americanisms to shine. More like the other way around.
She was always on the margins, never quite hitting the big time of mainstream success. While alternative rock did have a niche for female artists in the 90s, most of it was and remains very dude-centric. Also, you had people like Alanis Morisette and Gwen Stefani who were much more acceptable to mainstream ears, eyes and sensibilities, which drew attention away from gems like our Polly here.
Was working at a restaurant many moons ago, walked into the kitchen and one of the chefs was playing Rid of Me. I said " who is that?" I adore her and she is still making amazing music.
One of my alltime faves from Polly Jean. You could dig your way down down down to the bottom of the meaning of this song & all you'd discover is a secret door behind which is more meaning. Stellar writer, guitarist, performer.
I found her recently totally awesome. She's on a different level. Only song I knew before was Down by the Water I just never knew it was her lol. Whenever I hear shit music now I come home and put on PJ to cleanse my soul.
