    Great way to repurpose an aging display that couldn't be refurbished in it's original state. Turned out awesome!

      The original screen never looked good, even when new. I think this is why Apple didn’t sell many of them.

      Glad you liked it! I agree, it pairs really nice with the Apple IIc. It's a shame Apple didn't officially come out with a color flat panel display BITD. They might have sold more of them.

      The small green screens on the stands for the Apple IIc machines are 4:3 but the flat panels were never 4:3. They are good for text in 80 column mode.

    That's pretty small, especially for a non-laptop. I'd rather have something at least as big as the original tube monitor. I remember the IIc as very expensive, much more than the II and IIe, and was and still am disappointed in Apple's direction. I wanted them to come out with something cheaper and competitive with Commodore64, TI99 and Sinclair's. With this it was obvious they were going high-end, and in fact got way too expensive for schools. Schools eventually switched to PCs because Macs were ridiculously expensive for education. I have oddly mixed feelings about this mod. I remember playing Karnataka on monochrome, I think mine was a pirated copy. Along with pirated Drol. Pirating often required A fancy disk drive, and different methods of copy protection were used on different titles.

    • @geekwithsocialskills
      @geekwithsocialskills  3 роки тому +4

      Agreed, something as big as the original CRT would be better, however at the time this is what Apple made for the //c computer. As for having mixed feelings about this mod, like I mentioned in my video, if the original screen was working with a good picture, I would have it kept it stock, but since it was total garbage, doing the mod IMHO was a good decision. Now for playing a pirated copy of Karateka, don't copy that floppy LOL. Oh and Drol is so much fun, even today in 2021!

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 3 роки тому +1

      @@geekwithsocialskills oh yes, I forgot to compliment you on the actual mod. 🤗 I saw something similar done on an Amstrad, I think. One of those British computers with a similar small LCD. Good work! Karateka, but I never got Prince of Persia, the title by the same guy which got a lot more attention from history. I'm waiting for the day e-ink has fast enough refresh rates, and is cheap enough!, to use in something like replacing an original Mac screen. Probably would cut electric power requirements, and weight, to make these totally portable. We're not there yet. It would be much better than making a Macquarium!

    It's been a couple years since the release of your video. I noticed the flicker on the walking path in Karateka at 4:24 and 4:44. Normally, there are adjustments on a VGA LCD that allow you to tune out such flickering. Are there any such controls on the controller of your LCD to remove that flickering? (The reason I ask is because I have the same LCD working on a IIc now.)

    • @geekwithsocialskills
      @geekwithsocialskills  Рік тому +3

      Hi James! Indeed it's been a couple of years since I posted this video. The flicker you mention doesn't happen in person, it appears to be an artifact of my camera at the time of recording. As for any special controls on the controller board, I don't recall there being any, however I could be wrong since it's been a long time. The LCD used doesn't seem to be available anymore.

    • @JDW-

      @@geekwithsocialskills Thank you for sharing your experience. Unfortunately, with my LCD, the flickering I see on the same walking path in Karateka is with my own eyes. It's not on camera only, although the flickering appears on camera too. I'm just curious if there's a way to get rid of it like you can with adjustments on many VGA LCD monitors. The fact your flickering doesn't appear to be visible to your eyes is interesting. You and I should have the same LCD since mine is the same Prototype that Javier Rivera and Jonathan Adar put together and was shown at the recent VCF Midwest this past September. They forwarded it on to me, and I aim to do a video about it. Would you might firing up Karateka again to be absolutely sure you don't see any flickering on that walking path? If you don't, it means the flickering can be tuned out. I'm just curious as to how.

    • @geekwithsocialskills
      @geekwithsocialskills  Рік тому +3

      I found out about the LCD from Javier Rivera back in March 2021. The eBay seller he suggested no longer had them for sale, however I did find a slightly different version on AliExpress which is the one I purchased for the modifcation. The original one Javier used in his modifcation did have some different resolution options that mine didn't, so maybe that has something to do with it? I did double checked and I can see a little bit of flickering. Until you pointed it out, I didn't notice it LOL. For reference this is the link I used to purchase my LCD (they are now sold out it seems) but maybe you could reach out to the vendor and see if they know more about internal adustments? www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832711035241.html
