dude is a different breed of killer. How could you get into so many fights, get beaten so bad you have to be revived...and still not be punch drunk? Ken is the kind of guy everyone under estimated and gave a hard time, yet he still came out on top. The world can't handle certain people. They cope, doubt and make up lies. But in the end, the truth shows through.
    You're a legend Shamrock.

The greatest. Tremendous back story and a real inspiration on overcoming obstacles. He's exactly what MMA and Wrestling are missing today--cool look, strong personality and can back up his big talking. That's why McGregor's over. Can't understand why his peers don't understand this simple, old school wrestling style of character development (or for that matter, why WWE doesn't get it anymore, either!).

John Wolf When I met Ken Shamrock in Webster, MA he was extremely nice & cordial. I always hated that WWE wasted Shamrock when they should've had him in big main event matches and a title push.
At least in TNA he had some great matches. He could've had great matches in WWE but instead they had him in stupid silly storylines & pretty much smeared him IMO.

Rob Sycamore Well said, Rob. I couldn't agree more with all of your points. The guy is a living legend, he could return to the WWE today, I see him as the manager of a young protégé, a young MMA guy or something like that. There's definitely an angle there for Ken Shamrock to return.

Ken's fight against Don Frye is one for the books! I think Ken fractured or broke both of Don Frye's ankles with heel hooks and Don still didn't tap. Don won the fight but said that fight took about 10 years off his life. Shamrock was beat up as well.

    • @SageSea1

Yeah after this fight don took a further beating (no bs brawling) by fighting takayama right after. Even though he won and takayama got it much worse, you could see his prime was slowly slipping, already about 40 years old. He was constantly sore from his roughed alcoholic body as well as his badass prime and shamrock battle, further hindered by his inability to tap. (Seriously, i think every submission loss came from ref stoppage.)
After the takayama fight i believe he went 5-8, turning his great 15-1, two time champ status into a slowly fading 20-9, losing to people he never should've lost to period. I think his stubbornness towards retirement took a lot lf years off his life, but I hope the best. Still the most badass fighter, maybe it was worth it.

Despite his reputation with certain people and, his current fighting records, he was still a pioneer of MMA and did help the WWE rebound when it was at its lowest. He created the first MMA training camp, which produced some awesome champions (Jerry Bohlander, Guy Mezger, Frank Shamrock. Even Oleg Taktarov trained there when he first entered MMA) What amazes me is how he's functioning, mentally. He's taken some hard blows throughout his life and career, yet he can speak very well and is doing a lot of entrepreneurial work. I see Mark Coleman and it's sad to see how another MMA pioneer has turned out and his ability to speak is limited. Koodos to you Ken Shamrock, I hope your future continues to be positive.

A lot of people forget that Ken Shamrock is how "The Rock" came to be. His UFC nickname was Ken "The Rock" Shamrock. Then then ROcky Maivia, a then member of the Nation of Domination, beat down Ken. The "Real Rock" was born. Awesome times!

Don't forget he also inspired Bill Goldberg's character as well. Bill often spoke of how , still being green to the business didn't even know you don't "steal" another man's gimmick and Bill freely admits he "stole" Ken's shoot fighting persona. From the intensity to the knee pads. Ken saved the UFC with UFC 40 as well and was the real reason people tuned into the infamous Forest Griffin vs Stephan Bonnar wasn't because it was a 'great fight' like the UFC try to spin...it was because TUF was on before Smackdown and Ken was in the main event after Griffin vs Bonnar.

It may not be a big deal to some people but ken shamrock is the whole reason submissions happen via tap out in wwe. Before shamrock, no one tapped out. People just said yes and we had to take the refs word for it. As a fellow indy pro wrestler, that's a big deal to me. Just like jake Robert's DDT that most wrestlers do incorrectly these days (its NOT a hop and fall). Point being that the tap out and the DDT will be forever staples in pro wrestling because of those 2 guys. Jake's in now it's Shamrocks turn to get his HoF call.

I respect and admire Ken Shamrock. He was undoubtedly a pioneer in No Rules Fighting. At the time he started in UFC 1, Shamrock showed Americans, and the rest of the world, that striking alone wasn't the most effective fighting method, but it was a combination of striking, grappling and submission skills. Shamrock started the evolution towards Mixed Martial Arts. The Gracie family only promoted their brand of Jiu Jitsu. Two different things.

His explanation about why he left WWE (because he was cool with Bret Hart, and because he was losing every night for six weeks straight) sounds a little off, since Bret left the company almost TWO YEARS before Shamrock quit.
WWE talk starts at 1:01:13, btw, in case anyone wonders.

    • @danielmelvin4525
      @danielmelvin4525 2 роки тому

Well the fallout from Bret leaving affected the political standpoint of the company. Shawn and Hunter had control and even after Michaels retired he still
Came back as commissioner up until prob after Shamrock left. By the time of the screw job Shamrock was positioned really well and he fell off after. KOTR was meaningless by 98 (it used to set up a summer slam program with the champ or a program at least) but by 98 it was just a 4 man tournament which took some of the prestige away and nothing really came out of it. They eventually turned him heel with the corporation and tha he just got buried. He pretty much got the Vader treatment which was very much a product of Shawn Michaels being a dick.
The same thing happened with Owen and he was there for the same time as Shamrock. Owen was never more over than between the DX iyh at 97 to WM 14. If you don’t believe me watch clips of the Black Hart Owen Hart era the fans were literally packed with Owen signs chanting his name getting Austin pops from the crowd. They kept beating him over and over yeah with scre job finishes, and losing isn’t the worst thing but after getting beat multiple times by triple HhH the fans stopped caring cause they knew it was going nowhere and eventually the feud stopped with Owen never getting over or getting some kind of payoff, and he was put in the nation and back in the mid card. Than much like Shamrock he refused a storyline that as an father with kids wasn’t appropriate and got saddles with the blue blazer. However that stupid gimmick wasn’t necessary just like Shamrock doesn’t need to be kissing his kayfabe sister.

At 12:38, he said he ended up going after the drill instructor, and this is the reason why he didn't make it through USMC Boot Camp. But in his book, he said he got discharged because they found the disc in his back due to neck injury. Which one actually got him discharged?

Shamrock makes up stuff as he goes, cheated with steroids. Without the juice just a 135 pound average guy. UFC's a work too. Pathetic.

This guy is as tough as a two dollar steak in a B rate neighborhood, however very intelligent and well spoken. Respect. He inspired me to challenge myself and face my fears. Thanks KS

That event where they got arrested was one of the Battlecade Extreme Fighting events in Canada. On the official dvd they even include some footage of the guys being arrested if I remember correctly. Igor Zinoviev was one of the guys they showed getting arrested, again if I remember correctly.

Likes to toot his own horn a lot and always has an excuse for losing UFC fights. Still, enjoyed this interview and loved listening to his stories. Definitely a legend. Much respect.
