Definitely a throwback to school days, these hung all throughout the hallways. We all learned to respond to the bell. Thanks for sharing this memory of school with me.
When he hears that fire bell chime, fireman sam is there on time.
It looks like a happy bell. Made cheerful again by you. Thank you (says the bell) 🧡
When I went to school many decades ago, there was a similar bell in my school that announced the beginning of classes and the beginning of breaks. It had a terrifying volume, it was heard not only in every remote corner of the school, but also a hundred meters from the school. Probably it was designed by the same person who designed the alarm about a nuclear attack. Then no one thought about his harm to hearing.
When, much later, I came to the school where my grandchildren studied, there wasn’t such a bell, but quiet melodic signals in every classroom.
Interestingly, on any such bell in the USSR, the bell gongs were painted strictly silver, never red.
Despite all the difficulties, the work was brought to a good result. Good job done, man. My like was the first.
I’m pretty sure this one came from a school. It also reminded me of my school bell.
Great refurbishing effort and project. Looks like it will be working for a least a 100 more years now. Thumbs Up!
Fantastic job love the colours and it sounds awesome thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember#stay safe and make. 🍺🍺👍👍
I love the contrast in colors.
And it was sooo important you showed it working post restoration. Nice job!
A tip I learned working with domed head rivets. A chunk of aluminum, drill a detent into the aluminum. When riveting, rest the head of the rivet in the detent and use your air hammer or a riveting hammer to seat the rivet. Nice job on the bell! I would like to find one and restore it.
You would never know the aluminum rivets and powder coating gave you some problems. This restoration turned out very well. Good craftsmanship. Thank you and best regards from the USA.
The original black & silver colours plus the sound makes me think these might have been telephone bells for a workshop at one point in their life; certainly plenty of similar sets in use over the years.
My tiny Workshop showed the video to my dad who has worked for British Telecom since it was GPO telephones. He thinks it’s GPO/BT Bell No. 67
I really like how it turned out, looks really cool. I grew up in a firehouse, my whole family were firefighters, so it really brings back memories. I like the red bells, but I was hoping you were going to polish them. I remember the ones in our firehouse were nickle plated, but that's just my own preference. no complaints! great job
Thanks. I don’t have the adequate tools to polish them. I would have been sanding by hand all week.
I remember seeing this double gong, and it’s single gong variant, (gongs where un-painted) used as extended telephone/landline ringers for large commercial business, in the past - used at some train stations to notify when the train is arriving/about to leave, and in rare cases a fire/burglar alarm
You have come a long way from turning a handle on your drill press back at your start!!
Well done sir!!!
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you for sticking with me for nearly a year. It’s been tough and getting tougher but with support like this I’ll keep producing.
Very cool result. The mounting hole for the right bell is probably off center so you can fine tune the spacing between the bells for maximum volume.
Great restoration!! Next time, put those bells on the drill press for the sanding. That is, just in case you didn't do so this time!
Just a tip, the bell souds 'rattley' you would have noticed the holes in the domes were off centre
Take the cover off, move the armature to one side by pressing on the 'see saw' part, the clapper should not touch the dome, but be a very small distance, do the same for both domes. the offset holes allow you to rotate the domes to adjust that distance
Basically, the clapper should strike the bell only because the arm bounces.
It's very much like the big external telephone bells used for large workshops etc.
Another cracking restoration, it seems ages since the last one, hope your keeping well and looking forward to seeing the next video 😎👍
It sure has been a long time. 3 weeks. I’m keeping well. Glad you liked it.
Super to odrestaurowane ten bardzo stary dzwonek pozdrawiam serdecznie 👍👍👍👍
Nicely done. Correct me if I’m wrong but it almost looks like you can orient the bells to a wider or narrower range due to off center bolt holes. Great powder coating.
Old phones from Ma Bell had a similar mechanism. You could move the bells so close to each other the clapper could hardly move and you could barely hear the the bells ring.
If you have a landline, you can try it on terminals 3 and 5
of your `phone socket to the terminals of the bell-set.
Note - a 2.500 ohm resistor 0.5 watt
may be needed in series with the the bell to give
the correct REN (Ringer equivilent Number) to the line.
Oh! and adjust the gong spacing by
rotating them to match the 17 Hz ring current frequency. Then you have to ring your landline
from your mobile to test it.
PS. I was a telephone engineer for many years ! 🙂
Really nice work I'm a new subscriber looking forward to more videos I'll check out your other videos
Ilove sand polish
Amazing job looks great. Are these powered by mains power ?
Do you leave the bolts & the clapper bare metal? No plating or passivating?
GPO Bell 67 it will be marked as such, for external use, unlikely to ever have been used as a fire alarm, colour of gongs would be a metal finish so it would never show wear at the point the clapper hits it, gongs, holes off centre to allow correct adjustment of the gap, each gong will have a different tone as all GPO telephones did to create the will known ring. Introduced in the 1930s as a 76A and updated in the 1960s as 67B. Attractive item but don't show it to a telephone enthusiast! Nice job.
Great job...what was the square you put the filler on before you applied it to bell? Marble ?
How did you check the coils before reassembr?
The angle on your right shoulder says donate to your local fire station.... The devil on your left shoulder.... Forget that.🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑
У нас в школе был такой " звонок" на перемену
Hiya!! Love the video, just got one myself for restoration (although I’m not sure it’ll ever turn out as well as that!!) just wondering what voltage you ran the bell at? Thanks in advance
Hi, I just plugged it into the 230v power supply for testing. I have no idea if it’s right or wrong.
Perfect!! Thank you for the reply! Could I be a pain and ask how you wired it in?
So are the holes on the bells off center on purpose? Could they be welded up and re-drilled?
The holes are off centre to allow the bells to be rotated to give the best clearance for the striker and to adjust the tone and volume of the bell.
What voltage does that bell run on?
She looks like the barmaid in my local.
If we're only talking shape , count your blessings mate . If we're talking skin tone , she's got high blood pressure and is about to explode ! 😁
Look like The fireman sam bell
Great restore, but I don't think I would have used body filler on the bells.
There is no way I'm going into a shop and asking for BIG BOY FILLER...
Вся гальваника с метиза стëрта, теперь ещë быстрее заржавеет.
It's not a fire bell. It's an external telephone ringer
NOT a restoration, it’s a clean up and paint. I suppose to some it’s considered a restoration but not in the true sense. Still, nice video!
Дизлайк за неполную разборку и чистку (катушки).
Anyone else have a concern that even after 'sand' blasting there are still 1000s of tiny deep pin prick pits containing remnant corrosion. Without using a process to neutralize this the rusting will continue even under the freshly made coating of paint because the tiny pit will have enough oxygen to sustain it long enough to push the new paint off.... ?
I am so pleased with this for 2 reasons . First for the way it turned out . These bells were so typical from my youth .
Next is that the date code is from the same time that l was doing my second tour in the Vietnam war . I now have proof that l am not old , I'm "VINTAGE" .
Hahah thanks you. Glad you liked it.
