Freezing Camp | MSR Access 2 | Southern Uplands | 2021

- So with the weather forecast set for a cold spell I headed north again to the Southern Uplands, it was a beautiful day but was set to go below 0c overnight and with the windchill it felt like minus 5c.
Still I packed all my winter gear in readiness for a cold night but it was still a shock to the system having camped in 10c last week .
It was also the first run out for my new MSR access 2 since selling the Akto , this one has loads more room but time will tell if its the one and I am not 100% sure I will be keeping it ..
I did manage to get a few night shots but it was too cold for lingering outside .
Sorry its a bit long winded but its a while since I have had good weather.

You're like a walking goose with all that down draped on your body 😂🤣 Liking the MSR Access, I know it's light for a 2 man but still no overhead storage 😲 that little touch would add a 100g at most. The fly colour on these new MSRs is bang on for woodland, hills etc... Nice viddy Dave 👍 Lee
I feel the cold Lee 🥶🥶🥶🥶 yeah they missed a trick and should have the overhead storage . Colour is great and as you say bang on for blending to the surroundings. As always thanks for watching atb Dave

Looked very cold morning. Always find it tough putting tent away in cold icey or snowy weather. Good star-lapse. Like the tent.
It was very cold and yes a very slow pack away and cold hands , pleased with the nightlapse .
Brilliant night Dave some nice stills. Weather has definitely changed I got stuck in Swaledale 4 miles from the Tan hill in that storm. snow came from nowhere took everyone by surprise. Thanks for sharing.

what can i say dave but what a camp..sunset,stars,sunrise & a heavy frost absolutely brilliant ..those are the camps i really like that most .the night lapse was top notch the way you got orion across the sky was fantastic tfs.

Always safer having a wall as protection , saying that it doesn’t block the cold 🥶 🥶 a real shock to the system indeed but still good to have decent conditions for a change 📷👍 atb Dave

Smashing footage Dave, the new tent looks really roomy , your enjoying your wee trips over the Border 👌👌 Had a hike round the Hart Fell horseshoe last month, did it left to right and once you drop off Hart Fell Rig its a bog the rest of the way round, the first half is much drier, the Carrifran Valley is being put back to natural woodland and scrub and there`s a hidden waterfall at the far end of it which is a gem, looking forward to your wild camps from those locations.

@@BorderRambler couple of hundred yards along the road at Blackshope Dave, room for a few cars at the gate next to cottage, you'll have the place to yourself, never saw a soul on the walk !

It was certainly chilly Geordie, only fools would not go prepared with plenty of layers at hand . Yes last night would have been a good test for a loony lol 😂
Now that was a camp an half Dave . What a view , so lucky . The tent looks the dogs danglies. And that night lapse . Well just genius . 👍
Thanks Joe , it was bloody cold in the morning mind 🥶 the GoPro 9 gets warm when using it , so enough to stop it freezing up lol I also had a power bank connected for a 10 hour Timelapse 😂 roll in summer 😎
Nice tent Dave, you hear mixed reviews about MSR. I purchased the Hubba Hubba last year as you say for a bit more room and I cannot fault it. Nice to have a bit more room and luxury as you get older 😊

That was THE best overnight lapse I’ve seen for ages. Fabulous!! Why hasn’t anyone invented an electric blanket for a USB power pack?? That was cool thanks.

Wow, that looked cold, Dave! Well worth it though to get that fabulous night time lapse. The sight of Orion drifting across the sky....spine tingling.
It was really cold 🥶 Maurice and was difficult to get out in the morning lol . Very happy with the nightlapse atb Dave
May have been cold but the weather looked great with amazing views. The wind looked strong mind, so looked a good pitch next to the wall with a bit of protection and looked real cold when the sun dropped. Now that was a morning to wake up too and awesome shots of the night skies and sun rise/set....May have been a restless night sleep but worth it for the views you got, cheers Alan

Thanks Graham , I like it and I don’t lol … I think the Hubba nx is better as it’s lighter , more snug and is not as cold as the larger tent . Thought it was the one but maybe not lol tfw atb Dave

Great trip and tent, got me winter tents. I was at the Cheviots last week in the snow and had to escape the gorms and cancel a Wildcamp because of the storm. Yes its a bodyshock to feel the real cold again. ATB

Great camp, love the hills, access 2 looks ok. It has the extra side pole to make it a bit stronger than the Hubba Hubba I use, mine suffered bent poles when we put it up in the wind, but we have used it in strong wind, lost confined it now.
I will watch with interest !
It looks the same sort of conditions we have on the Cheviots !

what a great night time timelapse, didnt you use to have a MSR tent? certainly agree space is needed in a tent at winter time

Just caught up with this video Dave, great conditions, very watchable. For icy cold wind chill, I use a neck gaiter to protect mouth and nose. How was condensation management inside the tent? If you did switch to a Scarp, I am certain that you will instantly appreciate its ease of pitch and versatility.
Thanks Iain , I have a fleecy buff but didn’t think I would need it 😂 quite a bit of condensation but I suppose the frost was reducing the breathability of the material. Scarp is the same design as my old Akto and not really sold on that type ,but you never know Lol atb Dave
Great video Dave, Southern uplands looks a great place to explore your lucky to have it so close to home.
I'm looking for a proper 4 season tent, not sure what to go for, the Scarp1 is looking like the one.
The Access 2 looks very similar "almost" to my Elixir 2, just a different inner with solid walls otherwise the same tent and the poles are different.

Did you know the amount of heat given off by the body at rest is equal to about 1 candle power. No surprise the tent was frozen:)
Thanks Sandy, yeah it’s about 45 min drive away and is always very peaceful. They are all very similar but just have certain additions or not . Not sure it’s a keeper tho 😂 I am also looking at the Scarp 1 (can’t help myself lol) . It was like waking up in a fridge 🥶🥶 , at least I was warm till I got up . Tfw atb Dave

Thanks David , no footprint but I believe they are not the best as they are badly fitted.
I have the access 2. Last used it on the Cumbria Way - loved it. Since MSR only do a universal footprint, have since got one made by Lucy Quinton. Does bespoke footprints. lucyquintcraft.co.uk Cheers.

That's the best vid footage I've seen of an Access 2 - sort of makes me want one. Great vid Dave, great area for hiking and camping and you chose a fantastic route and pitch. Damn it was chilly though! That's the first vid I've saw this season where the tent's been solid with frost. Initial thoughts on the Access then? Looks palatial, nice sturdy pole design, can't go wrong with double bules. Cracking good first test out for it. Well done. At least you didnt have to get your feet wet on this one :) TFS (P.S one of the best night-time-lapses I've seen in a while as well)

the SUW looks a cracking trail, must look at it sometime...as always , a cracking camp, bloody chilly tho lol. what did u film the overnight timelapse with? surprised the cold didnt just zap whatever battery it had, lovely shots of Sirius and Orion there, something bout that constellation , just says winter is here to me..a pleasure to watch..ATB WJ
Thanks Jay , I have only dipped in and out the suw but it’s a decent trail I’ve heard. Believe it or not nightlapse from my hero 9 with a power bank attached for 10 hours , they run warm so probs stopped it freezing up 😂 winter was deffo up there on that night . Atb Dave
