Slavery is legal when you are incarcerated....and the sad thing is, several major corporations will use inmate labor for their products, goods, and services while the individual is incarcerated, however, upon release that same individual will not be allowed to work for those same companies due to their criminal records.
It's not just Alabama, every State that uses prison labor does it. I was a former Corrections Officer and Counselor for the state of South Dakota for 4 1/2 years and I "know that game" intimately.

The suit had to be brought under the 8th Amendment as a cruel and unusual punishment violation because it was totally legal to force the inmates to work for free. Look up the inmate lease system and the history of chain gangs after the passing of the 13th amendment. Most of the ground for highways were graded by inmates.

During the pandemic several states were given funds from the federal government to help people with rent and I remember the Alabama governor saying that she was going to use that money to build more prisons. Prisons are known to generate a lot of money.
Nah we need to make them states safer for us and others too. They shouldn’t be able to still do certain things in broad day without being shut down. They should be hiding but they’re not. Federal investigations into sun down states and find and replace ALL incompetent government employees engaged in discriminatory behaviors. Put real American in their place. I recently moved to Alabama and hate how their prison system is ran. They have taken millions of dollars from the public school system to fund the prison education. They are also building a state of the art prison worth millions of dollars but the state employees and school teachers barely make minimum wage. Just sad.
My brother been in prison since he was 21. He will be 48 in November. They gave him life without parole for robbery under 3 strikes law. He was out for 1 year before he caught the 3rd strike, when he was 34. He was diagnosed with ADD when he was in elementary school and would not take his Ritalin which was recalled. He stayed in the hole for the first couple of years.
