      Not the only reason. But helped build the country faster than without. Slavery was used all around the world since biblical times. Still in use in some countries in the Middle East and Asia

    I'm from Alabama and currently on parole...I did 10 on a 99 year sentence...I went to Work Release and the 40% is no joke...and you pay for van rides to work. It's absolutely Modern Day Slavery. The ADOC parole board is pathetic and empowered to keep this system full of workers for the State of Alabama.

      Yes, some folks belong behind bars, but many people have simply been lied upon.

    13th Amendment. Slavery is legal when you are incarcerated....and the sad thing is, several major corporations will use inmate labor for their products, goods, and services while the individual is incarcerated, however, upon release that same individual will not be allowed to work for those same companies due to their criminal records.

    It's not just Alabama, every State that uses prison labor does it. I was a former Corrections Officer and Counselor for the state of South Dakota for 4 1/2 years and I "know that game" intimately.

I honestly just wanted to get away from home while still attending an HBCU, so I chose A&M. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Both are wonderful institutions. 🥰

      @@bobbyyoung4243 you know, there is an old case in which a Louisiana prison was being run by inmates. There were only a handful of actual employees. The suit had to be brought under the 8th Amendment as a cruel and unusual punishment violation because it was totally legal to force the inmates to work for free. Look up the inmate lease system and the history of chain gangs after the passing of the 13th amendment. Most of the ground for highways were graded by inmates.

    I live in Alabama and the Governor was on TV pulling a gun out of her purse on a TV ad… my buddy’s Grandchild said “ get your gun in your purse.. she told her Grandchild I don’t have a gun m in my purse! And where did you get that from? The child said the lady on TV! ( The Governor of Alabama)

    During the pandemic several states were given funds from the federal government to help people with rent and I remember the Alabama governor saying that she was going to use that money to build more prisons. Prisons are known to generate a lot of money.

      Nah we need to make them states safer for us and others too. They shouldn’t be able to still do certain things in broad day without being shut down. They should be hiding but they’re not. Federal investigations into sun down states and find and replace ALL incompetent government employees engaged in discriminatory behaviors. Put real American in their place. People who’s for every American regardless of their ethnicity and act accordingly, not discriminating against any. We can’t have whole states or whole towns behaving like that and everyone stands by does nothing. That says something also. Stand/speak up!!! I’m grateful for those who do.

    I don't know about the thugs, but this scared the 💩outta me. I thought the system was unfare, but not to this degree. You mean to tell me that a man who would NORMALLY be eligible for parole is denied because he's worth more money 💰 to the prison system while incarcerated? WOW!! That means you DON'T have to be a thug to get arrested & sentenced to 40/50 yrs. 😢 We can't even hold a job that long. 😅

    I recently moved to Alabama and hate how their prison system is ran. They have taken millions of dollars from the public school system to fund the prison education. They are also building a state of the art prison worth millions of dollars but the state employees and school teachers barely make minimum wage. Just sad.

    My brother been in prison since he was 21. He will be 48 in November. They gave him life without parole for robbery under 3 strikes law. He was out for 1 year before he caught the 3rd strike, when he was 34. He was diagnosed with ADD when he was in elementary school and would not take his Ritalin which was recalled. He stayed in the hole for the first couple of years.

    We have something like that here in Georgia where people work at McDonald’s and Wendy’s the same thing as Alabama and one of my homeboys said he used to pick cotton and watermelon mountains. That’s the dirty south.

      Research your history and you will learn about the chain gang and why blacks are kept in prison. Slavery was abolished in 19th century but not the system. The state owns you when you are in prison.

    My brother got life for stealing a car. Stealing somebody's car is serious for who it was stolen from, but a non-violent, no weapon crime getting life was simply for prison slave labor.

    I remember hearing about how prison labor contributes to the U.S. economy. (I took an African American History Class in college)
    I thought it was an exaggeration.
    ... Honestly, I HOPED it was an exaggeration. :(
    (It's hard enough to get real jobs...but they encourage inmates to work for less-than minimum wage... That is so unAmerican and so... distasteful. Awful!!!)

    I assumed it was mostly construction, farming and cheap companies like Oriental Trading.
    Makes me wonder about Starbucks...)

    You have to send an Affidavit of Questionnaire to the judge and attorneys stating: Under Penalty of Perjury do you have a financial interest in this case yes or no.
    If it Yes, you must reques yourself...If No,then you have perjured yourself.
    They don't like those kinds of letters.

      Alabama also using 400 million of COVID money to build new prisons.
      This reminds me of Shaw shank Redemption. The warden knew,of evidence that could have freed Andy, but had prisoner with TBE information killed to keep Andy at prison so Andy could cooked the financial records of the warden.

    Some people have stated that a 9-5 job is considered slavery! But what about the old manufacturing jobs or farm jobs that kept people working 16-20 hours per week?
    This required a lot of physical and mental stregth!!!
