The Prophet and the Sahaba never recited the Qur'an from a mus'haf, nor built huge mosques of marble and gold, nor cleaned their teeth with toothbrushes instead of the miswaak. If you actually study Islam and its history from traditional sources you will soon learn that much of what we consider Islam today was not practiced by the Prophet and the Sahaba over 1400 years ago. This doesn't make it wrong, because times change and society must adapt. If something was not explicitly made haram, then it is halal. This is the reason that this kind of practice has been established by Islam's classical scholars for over a thousand years, the vast majority of whom were Sufi. It is a fallacy of the modern-day cult of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab that all innovation is haram, this was never the understanding of the classical scholars of the maddhabs and it is not the understanding of the vast majority of modern scholars.
