Helen Folasade Adu CBE (born 16 January 1959), known professionally as Sade Adu or simply Sade (shah-DAY),. Is a Nigerian-born British singer, songwriter, and actress. One of the most successful British female artists in history, she is often recognised as an influence on contemporary music. Her influence on music was recognised in the UK with an award of the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2002, and a was made Commander in the 2017 Birthday Honours. Sade was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, and brought up partly in Essex, England, from the age of four. She studied at Saint Martin's School of Art in London and gained modest recognition as a fashion designer and part-time model. After gaining attention as a performer, she formed the band Sade, and secured a recording contract with Epic Records in 1983. A year later the band released the album Diamond Life, which became one of the best-selling albums of the era, and the best-selling debut by a British female vocalist. Following the band's third and fourth albums, Stronger Than Pride (1988) and Love Deluxe (1992), they went on hiatus after the birth of Sade's child, while the singer experienced widespread media coverage for unsubstantiated claims of mental health and addiction issues. After a spell of eight years without an album, the band reunited in 1999, and released Lovers Rock in 2000. The album departed from the jazz-inspired inflections of their previous work, featuring mellower sounds and pop compositions. The band then underwent another hiatus, not producing music for another ten years until the release of Soldier of Love. Following that album's release, the band entered a third period of extended hiatus, and have only released two songs ("Flower of the Universe" for the soundtrack of Disney's A Wrinkle in Time, and "The Big Unknown" as part of the soundtrack for Steve McQueen's film Widows) since. Sade has 1 child & a step-child. She had relationships. In 2005, Sade moved to the Gloucestershire countryside, where she bought a run-down cottage to renovate. Sade rarely grants interviews.

“shah-DAY” is definitely a female crooner. She performed this song at Disneyland for thousands of high seniors during my Senior Trip in 1984. We were so excited to have such a big name hot new artist perform in person for all of us! Gorgeous and talented.
Excellent choice, my friends!! As everybody has pointed out, it’s pronounced “Sha-day”. She’s one of the best who’s ever done it!! Watch one of her concerts on UA-cam (it doesn’t matter which one, they’re all great) and you’ll see what I’m talking about!! “Is it a Crime”, “Sweetest Taboo”, “Cherish the Day”, the list goes on and on...
And don’t forget her crew: Stewart Matthewman, Paul S. Denmam and Andrew Hale!! Listen to their album “Sweetback” featuring Maxwell and others. Fantastic!!
Sade (pronounced Sha-day) is as smooth as it gets! Her voice and band are outstanding! Lots of quality to choose from with her. Is it a Crime is my all-time favorite. Check that one out. Follow that with Sweetest Taboo.
I love how effortlessly & elegantly Sade sings (which mirrors her stunning style). Never trying too hard. Minimum vibrato. She has a beautiful "woodwind" quality in her tone. REGAL. (They are nothing alike, but Karen Carpenter's voice is also effortlessly elegant.)
Amber, there’s no need to compare yourself to any other woman! You are truly a natural beauty! Your natural complexion is lovely and you have a beautiful smile! I’m sure Rob realizes how lucky he is! Love watching you guys! Tina
As a man Rob so wanted to say Sade is beautiful but he's also a gentleman (knows what side his bread is buttered) and realised that she reminds him of his beautiful wife would give him a get out of jail card 😆. Most married men, myself included have been there (just about to say something that would earn you dog house for a week but managed to check himself just in time).
Just some suggestions of another fantastic songs of her: Nothing can come between us Your love is king Hang on to your love It is a crie Never as good as the first time Paradise Sweetest taboo No ordinary love Kiss of life… Or any other. Going wrong wit Sade is a concept that simply doesn’t exist 😁
When this album Diamond Life came out, it didn't leave our turntable for months. Every track is spectacular! Her band and the production are just unrivaled. We got married two years later in '86 and the song Your Love Is King was our wedding dance. A truly special album.
The combination of her sensual and sexy voice and her band combine make her songs perfection. That smooth jazz/ latin/ rock/ samba beat is so smooth and and make you want to just get up and dance around the room. Her band is AWESOME.
Yeah, I think there were a lot of babies conceived to Diamond Life back in the 80's. Every bloke I knew back then had a Sade CD just in case he got lucky. :D
Most of the world as I’ve heard pronounces her name as “Shaw-Day”. Well however it should be said, she had a huge hit with this song. Back in the 80’s she was all over the air waves. I’m glad you got a chance to hear her.
I lived in Southern California in 1984 and I remember driving on Pacific Coast Highway at 5 a.m. and listening to "Smooth Operator" and knew what heaven on Earth was like.
You are right in your pronunciation and I used to listen to "Is It A Crime" looking out my window as the rain fell down in the 80s when I was just 20 and that song hit me so hard!! So, I'm with you on that one for sure!
Haha, love how both of you were vibin to the intro and when you heard her majestic voice, you both paused and had the same look on your faces. Sade has the most hypnotic voice ever and looks to match. No Ordinary Love is the truth!
More Sade please! She is one of the greatest singers ever IMO. " No Ordinary Love " " Your Love Is King " " The Sweetest Taboo " " Hang On To Your Love " " Soldier Of Love ". All 👍 👌
I hope the reason King of Sorrow isn't on your list is 'cause you haven't found it yet! Give it a whirl, top five of hers for me and I just found it about a year ago.....
Anita would be a huge rabbit hole for them. Anita doesn’t know how to make any bad songs and the vocals are buttery and super soulful! They’re gonna love it!
As previously noted by others, her name is pronounced - "Shah-day". One of the most beautiful and unique voices ever!! her catalog of music is phenomenal!! If you both ever get time, I suggest you watch her 1994 concert film or any of her concert videos available on UA-cam. You will be mesmerized...by the way, this is the short version of this song...
Whenever I hear Sade’s voice one word comes to mind every time since I first heard her when she originally hit the charts and that is “silky”. Sweetest taboo should be your next Sade song.
Love Sade! Since the 1980s I've always heard her name pronounced Shaa - day. Towards the end of the video didn't you notice she's crying as she's singing? I know it usually takes more than 1 time watching it to catch everything - I saw this video many times back in the 80s. She is singing about that man who she's in love with but he's a cheater. When he 's leaving the club you can see tears running down her face as she's singing so obviously she's heartbroken & hurt. Most video's from the 1980's told a story...I guess that's part of the reason we were so hooked on watching them besides the music being so good.
@Naomi K They, especially Jay close their eyes so much while listening, I think they miss a lot at times. Sometimes I scream "Open your eyes and watch! Listen later with your eyes closed!" LOL! Still, it *is* an honest react, so I need to try to calm down. :)
I'm thinking Taylor Dayne 'Tell It To My Heart' is gonna be needed for FF. Oh....and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam 'Lost In Emotion' or 'Head to Toe'. Such great females!
I saw her and her band in an outdoor concert in the 80's. It was enhanced by a lightning and storm off in the distance. Far enough away to not be a threat. But close enough to be like a natural light show along side her music, and simply beautiful voice. She was fantastic live.
From a guy who is more into Ministry and Sepultura, Sade is amazing. Lover's Rock is on my top 10 as one of the most perfect albums of all time. Glad to see you two found her.
1st She's drop dead Gorgeous..what a voice!! And she had so many hits from the 80's to the 2000's ..she was on every hardcore rapper listening playlist in the 90's ( Love Her ) ..
My favorite song by Sade is Cherish the Day and Stronger than Pride, but in truth everything Sade touches turns into Gold. I love the Live performance of Pearls.. great job Rob and Amber
Love when Amber came out with the new mom's constant phrase. "I need more sleep". Also J getting off the chart points for the comparison. Talk about a smooth operator.
Oh how i love young folks discovering real music for the first time and how it effects them on such a deep level! Reminds me of when i heard these songs back in the day
I would definitely recommend revisiting Sade, many many many times. She is amaaaaazing! Personally my favourite is Sweetest Taboo but all her music is very special.
Sade, pronounced SHAH-DAY, was a major hit when this, her first song came out in 1984. Smooth, velvet voice. So different from anything else at the time. Others tracks to check out: Is It A Crime and, my favorite, No Ordinary Love. This former model is still around performing and concerts with about 40 years in the business. And she looks the same. This came out around the same time that MJ's Thriller was released. So our music back then ran the gamut.
There’s actually a very subtle R in there. Shar-day (ish). The way it was described to me is to pretend you’re a Bostonian so that it’s pronounced somewhere between shar-day and shah-day.
Sade has done so many great songs. Paradise is another good one. Seal would be her male counterpart - with a hypnotic, soothing voice. Seal’s Love Divine, or Kissed by a Rose or Crazy are all worthy.
And for her work in music, she was awarded the OBE(Officer of the British Empire, 1 level below Knighthood) by the Queen. A great song and reaction by u 2.
Yes, I listen to this song, about three times a week, always amazes me, love the sax setting the tone for her smoky jazzy voice, and of course, hehe, the scenery!
What a sweet compliment to say you look like Sade! You'd better hold onto that guy, Amber! xo Sade has other great songs to chill out to! Thanks for bringing back the 80's! Love your channel!
First thing I feel in love with was this woman's voice and then I saw her in this video and I thought she is so beautiful and jazz and R&B she sings is perfect she can make you fall for her with her voice but this woman is a model if she wanted to be.
Whenever a singer prolongs a note for a long time, the listener is conscious that the singer is sustaining his/her breath. What's extra-special about Sade is how beautifully she keeps her pitch throughout that sustained note. That produces that smooth, velvety effect.
@@jdc7923 It is much harder for a singer to hold a pitch-perfect note - too many disguise their lack of being able to do that by using a lot of vibrato.
@@jdc7923 If you really look at her voice from a technical standpoint, she is not pitch perfect by any measure, but close. What distinguishes her from everyone else (beside the incredible band that sets the mood) is her delivery - smooth, sexy emotionally, and sultry. NO ONE out there at the moment delivers like she does.
Sade, pronounced Sha-day, moved to London from Nigeria to study fashion design. In her follow-up videos there is a theme of a relationship that is wrong for her, despite the fact that she loves him. Sade doesn't so much sing as she breathes her words across the notes. The jazz band has backed her from the beginning, tours with her whenever she comes out of hibernation. This is important because the band frames her voice with just enough structure for Sade to apply her the true power of her voice. When this happens, it connects with the listener from the inside. The underlying tension surfaces to acknowledge its existence when released during the solos. Some prime examples of her work are; IS IT A CRIME ? PARADISE NEVER AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME HOLD ON TO YOUR LOVE YOUR LOVE IS KING and from her Lovers Rock Live concert NO ORDINARY LOVE. This song epitomizes every great thing in her arsenal. It is also, I believe her best song. She only tours about once every decade. So if you want to see her make time.
Each and every time I hear a Sade song, my mind is always transported to some exotic location. So smooth and so sultry. Her voice lacks vibrato much like another great exotic singer of yore...Astrud Gilberto (The Girl From Ipanema).
@Steve Cabrera ...Hey, Steve... I didn't realize any one else had mentioned Astrud... and I put in a long comment. Check it out. And yes, Sade and Astrud have that smooth something. Always loved how Astrud did "The Girl From Ipanema." Now I'll have to check out more of her and more of Sade!
Gosh ..... I've listened to Sade from the beginning... you are 100% correct.. no vibrato to her voice... and when you try to karaoke her songs...you realize it...and she's slightly off pitch... impossible to copy her....one of a kind!
She is my favorite! She sounds just as good live people. Sade is actually also the group as well as her name. Too many great songs to mention! Dig deep!
Finally!! Sade is in the top 3 of my fave female singers ever, I never get tired of her voice and the ambience of all the instrumentation in her songs. So many more great songs for you to explore, Sweetest Taboo is another one I really enjoy and she has some very deep emotional songs as well.
When Jay said " Jazz " one name popped in to my head, George Benson. His album " Breezin" was the number 1 Jazz album of all time!!! Several of the songs from that album were big hits; "Masquerade", and "Breezing" come to mind. The degree of success he reached justify you reacting to one of his videos!!
beautiful woman with a beautiful voice...next: "Sweetest Taboo" and "No Ordinary Love"...
Yes yes yes!!

Sade (pronounced Sha-day) is as smooth as it gets! Her voice and band are outstanding! Lots of quality to choose from with her. Is it a Crime is my all-time favorite. Check that one out. Follow that with Sweetest Taboo.
Is it a Crime is great..love to watch her sing that one live.
You're pronunciation (Shar day) is 100% correct.
1984 was probably one of the best years in music ever. Smooth Operator is such a beautiful, emotional song. That tear at the end 😢.
Even the last line "Is it a crime".….
I could watch her performance of Your Love Is King at Live Aid over and over - so smooth (and great sax!)
Y'all were swaying at the beginning of the song and then Sade started singing and you both stopped! Loved your reaction! Love Sade!!!
*_((Officially my favorite part of the reaction now))_*
Thank you for pointing this out💯#Moment
Amber, there’s no need to compare yourself to any other woman! You are truly a natural beauty! Your natural complexion is lovely and you have a beautiful smile! I’m sure Rob realizes how lucky he is! Love watching you guys! Tina
She is absolutely beautiful, isn’t she?!?
As a man Rob so wanted to say Sade is beautiful but he's also a gentleman (knows what side his bread is buttered) and realised that she reminds him of his beautiful wife would give him a get out of jail card 😆. Most married men, myself included have been there (just about to say something that would earn you dog house for a week but managed to check himself just in time).
Just some suggestions of another fantastic songs of her:
Nothing can come between us
Your love is king
Hang on to your love
It is a crie
Never as good as the first time
Paradise
Sweetest taboo
No ordinary love
Kiss of life…
Or any other. Going wrong wit Sade is a concept that simply doesn’t exist 😁
you love is king is auch a vibe. Love that song.
YES TO THEM ALL!
Such a smooth, velvety sultry tone, not to mention you're right Amber, Sade was drop dead gorgeous.
I can't recommend "no ordinary love" enough by her ,one of my all time favourite songs ..her voice is as smooth as silk :)
When this album Diamond Life came out, it didn't leave our turntable for months. Every track is spectacular! Her band and the production are just unrivaled. We got married two years later in '86 and the song Your Love Is King was our wedding dance. A truly special album.
LOVE that song! And so many more
Sade was huge in the UK for several years. Sublime voice... 🖤
The combination of her sensual and sexy voice and her band combine make her songs perfection. That smooth jazz/ latin/ rock/ samba beat is so smooth and and make you want to just get up and dance around the room. Her band is AWESOME.
We used to call her music, “Makin Baby’s Music”. All her songs have a vibe!
And "Paradise" is a great song by her too.
preach!!!
Yeah, I think there were a lot of babies conceived to Diamond Life back in the 80's. Every bloke I knew back then had a Sade CD just in case he got lucky. :D
4Show
panty-dropping music
Most of the world as I’ve heard pronounces her name as “Shaw-Day”. Well however it should be said, she had a huge hit with this song. Back in the 80’s she was all over the air waves. I’m glad you got a chance to hear her.
I lived in Southern California in 1984 and I remember driving on Pacific Coast Highway at 5 a.m. and listening to "Smooth Operator" and knew what heaven on Earth was like.
You have to hear her sing “Is it a crime”. Her voice is 👌🏾 Also, I I could be wrong, but I think it’s pronounced Sha-day.
agreed
Oh yes! She killed that song live on her “Live from San Diego” video.
You are right in your pronunciation and I used to listen to "Is It A Crime" looking out my window as the rain fell down in the 80s when I was just 20 and that song hit me so hard!! So, I'm with you on that one for sure!
Over the 30+ years her music has been out, I have heard it pronounced both ways numerous times.
@@lindapetro5594 That's a good one but I think the "Lovers Live Tour" vid is just a little bit better, but then any version is great .
Haha, love how both of you were vibin to the intro and when you heard her majestic voice, you both paused and had the same look on your faces. Sade has the most hypnotic voice ever and looks to match. No Ordinary Love is the truth!
She started off as a fashion model. I saw her live at Jones Beach NY. She sounds the same live as she does on her albums. I love everything she sings.
I saw her at Jones Beach too (in the 90’s) she’s amazing live!!
I haven't heard this song in a while and I'd forgotten just how beautiful it is. Loved it.
More Sade please! She is one of the greatest singers ever IMO.
" No Ordinary Love "
" Your Love Is King "
" The Sweetest Taboo "
" Hang On To Your Love "
" Soldier Of Love ". All 👍 👌
I hope the reason King of Sorrow isn't on your list is 'cause you haven't found it yet! Give it a whirl, top five of hers for me and I just found it about a year ago.....
She has a voice like velvet, warm and smooth.
Anita Baker’s Sweet Love is a beautiful jazzy song from the same time period
My favorite female R&B singer
Yessssssssss!!
I second third and fourth that 🤩🤩
Anita would be a huge rabbit hole for them. Anita doesn’t know how to make any bad songs and the vocals are buttery and super soulful! They’re gonna love it!
Anita Baker is another beautiful songstress who as mentioned never made a bad song.
No ordinary love is another good song from her
I was 25 when this song came out and feel in love with her. At 64, I still love her. Time for you guys to love her too.
I was privileged enough to see her perform. You could hear a pin drop in the auditorium. Sade is legendary.
@Naomi K
They, especially Jay close their eyes so much while listening, I think they miss a lot at times.
“I’ll be your shelter” would be too good.
And Gloria Estefan, Miami Sound Machine - Conga
Actually All Cry Out is Lisa Lisa's best
Any song from Taylor Dayne is perfect!
Any Taylor Dayne song would indeed be good, but I'll Be Your Shelter would be GREAT!
I saw her and her band in an outdoor concert in the 80's. It was enhanced by a lightning and storm off in the distance. Far enough away to not be a threat. But close enough to be like a natural light show along side her music, and simply beautiful voice.
She was fantastic live.
She is the best! There’s no other like Sade!
🥰
Her live performance of Pearls is priceless!
I can't agree with you 💯 more.
Love when Amber came out with the new mom's constant phrase. "I need more sleep". Also J getting off the chart points for the comparison. Talk about a smooth operator.
Oh how i love young folks discovering real music for the first time and how it effects them on such a deep level! Reminds me of when i heard these songs back in the day
Possibly one of the 'smoothest' songs ever recorded. Love it. When I think of smooth jazz this is the first song that comes to my mind.
I would definitely recommend revisiting Sade, many many many times. She is amaaaaazing! Personally my favourite is Sweetest Taboo but all her music is very special.
I fell in love with her in 1985 as a teenager, from this song. I am still in love with her at 52. What a class act. She has no peers....
Correct Sir! Folashade is a name loaded with deeply rich meaning in Yoruba language.
Shaday, Shaday shaday! !!!
Thank you
There’s actually a very subtle R in there. Shar-day (ish). The way it was described to me is to pretend you’re a Bostonian so that it’s pronounced somewhere between shar-day and shah-day.
thank goodness!!
"Kiss of Life" is my all-time favorite, and you can't go wrong with "The Sweetest Taboo", either. Her voice is perfection!
Kiss of Life is my all time Sade song.
Like a Tattoo is one of my favorites, too.
Love that song.
You guys need to give this entire first album a listen. A complete masterpiece. It is a perfect alone for 2 night album to enjoy.
She's one classy lady and singer.
Sade has done so many great songs. Paradise is another good one. Seal would be her male counterpart - with a hypnotic, soothing voice. Seal’s Love Divine, or Kissed by a Rose or Crazy are all worthy.
Love “Kissed by a Rose”.
My favorite song of hers is Sweetest Taboo
I was in a band that did that song (and this one) and the drummer really loved the groove on Sweetest Taboo
This song, her voice are so soothing... love her music
No vibrato.
@@mikelucey5035 I hadn't thought about that, but that's true. Very little vibrato in her voice.
@@jdc7923 It is much harder for a singer to hold a pitch-perfect note - too many disguise their lack of being able to do that by using a lot of vibrato.
@@richardpare3538 Good point.
Some prime examples of her work are;
IS IT A CRIME ?
PARADISE
NEVER AS GOOD AS THE FIRST TIME
HOLD ON TO YOUR LOVE
YOUR LOVE IS KING
and from her Lovers Rock Live concert
NO ORDINARY LOVE.
This song epitomizes every great thing in her arsenal. It is also, I believe her best song. She only tours about once every decade. So if you want to see her make time.
Seriously, how can anyone not freaking love this song!
Oh my God, one of the best smooth vocalist I’ve ever heard. From the 80s… Excellent reaction
Sade Adu is her real name , from Nigeria and lives in London .
Listen to cherish the day . Also check out her live performances . Class act .
If you love her voice, "No Ordinary Love" is a must. Beautiful song and one of her most popular too.
She is my favorite! She sounds just as good live people. Sade is actually also the group as well as her name. Too many great songs to mention! Dig deep!
Sade... Smooth as Silk and Beautiful. LOVE her Music
No need to ask... he's a #SmoothOperator
Hi Mr. R., May I add, "Turn Your Love Around".. ♠W.G.
@@wgdavis5353 And Love Ballad🎸😊
Her voice is like soft butter….smooth, silky, just spreads it’s velvety texture all over everything it touches and makes everything better 🤤🤤🤤
Sade's "No Ordinary Love" and "King Of Sorrow" are almost as beautiful as she is.
“Sweetest Taboo” and “Cherish the Day” are my picks but, honestly, you can’t go wrong with Sade 😉
Along with Kiss of Life.
"Your Love is King“。。。。
