- The notion of Georgia O’Keeffe as a loner, an artistic ascetic hiding out in the New Mexico badlands is as central to her mystique as it is untrue. In this conversation with Tim Gihring, host of The Object podcast from the Minneapolis Institute of Art, we discuss the fascinating origins of this legend and all the evidence to the contrary-from celebrity visits to FBI investigations. This conversation will be a fresh look at an enduring myth.
Tim Gihring is the writer, producer, and host of The Object, an award-winning podcast from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Based in Minneapolis, Gihring has been a journalist for more than 25 years, writing for The Associated Press, Minnesota Monthly, and other magazines and newspapers around the world. His research on O’Keeffe was featured in the April 2022 episode of The Object, “Hiding in Plain Sight: The O’Keeffe We Never Knew.”
Another fantastic talk about a true visionary who gave us some of the best art in the world. I loved learning more about her in her humanity. the more I learn, the more I respect and admire the person she was and the legacy she gave the world. This may sound melodramatic, but looking at her art lifted me out of the worst depression so far in my longish life. I'm still looking, learning about her, and always want to be.
We tend to ignore how wealthy she was after her husband died and her art supported her, allowing her to live well even if she lived frugally and was generous in supporting the school and people in Abiqui etc.
Spending Christmas Day with this, thank you its wonderful.
at 4:15, "Mrs O'Keeffe"? Really? If you have to use "Mrs" then "Mrs Stieglitz"? O'Keeffe was her maiden name and she chose not to be addressed as Mrs. Please do some homework.
The photo used for home page and in the presentation is GOK with Rebecca Strand, not MDLuhan.
Thanks very informative....Wow I would love to visit the museum. The more one learns the more fascinating her life and works become.
Another fantastic about that, well done👌👏👏👏
The Arnold Newman portrait is interesting in how he makes Stieglitz primary and O'keeffe secondary. It would be telling to know if he placed them in this dynamic or if it was of their choosing, since the placement could be interpreted as misogyny.
Love this….didn’t know she was that “free” feeling when she lived in Canyon & was a teacher, which is where I am. Each time I go to Santa Fe/Taos area I’m super drawn to Abiquiu & Pedernal. I love her 2 homes & SFe museum..Ghost Ranch.
I think that is why she loved NM so much... that same open space beauty - the need for that was in her true essence. How stifling New York and Lake George must have felt - when I look at her home and her artwork of NM and the photos of her there, it is obvious she is in her full glorious essence in that exquisite place.
So much talk - I'm out of here
i think it would be good to look also at her sister ida who was equally talented
Merci beaucoup pour cette présentation. Je suis artiste française et passionnée par l oeuvre de Georgia O Keffe .. je projette de venir en 2025 à Santa Fe au musée et pour visiter ces deux maisons pour comprendre encore mieux sa vie. 😊😍
No comment
I skipped through it ... there was so much in it that wasn't about Georgia, and she is who I stopped in for...
I wonder if Georgia ever met Bob? Whether yes or whether no, i think it would make a good short story.
I always felt she was a cia asset, especially with art angle.
Really?
Was Georgia romantically disappointed?
Interesting
I can see comments but not a Chat. ??
