    Congrats Tyler. Fantastic buy mate! As far as I'm concerned GU's are unmatched off-road. Coil sprung, bullet-proof drive-line.
    I have a 2005 TD42, and if ever something happens to it, without a second thought i'll be going for another GU.
    Don't fret on the engine and/or fuel economy mate. Just drive it and use and enjoy it for what it is... ! You won't regret it.

    I don't think you'll regret getting a petrol, I bought a petrol Hilux for some of the reasons you mentioned like maintenance cost. Petrols generally don't have distributors or high tension leads any more, combined with diesels moving to electronic fuel injection = diesels losing their water crossing advantage imo. First mod? Big auto cooler + a temp gauge.

    Owned a GU for 20yrs. Good choice. Front or rear Diff lock will be a choice. Most say the LSD in the rear is gold, but I had my locker in the rear. why not get both! Rear door will sag a little with the weight of the tyre, but nothing major. You will need another front-runner rack with that amazing stainless table to match the Nav ! Enjoy mate.

  • @andrewengland12

    First mods do the barn door opening latch with a gas strut then do the internal cabin filter, tiny and cheap mods but massive quality of life improvements

  • @OzTrax4X4
    @OzTrax4X4 2 роки тому +17

    Rear LSD is generally decent in these, so I'd look at a front locker later on.
    Long wheelbase means a shallower rampover angle, so maybe some custom sliders should be on the cards so you don't smash your sills.
    Also recommend a Wholesale Automatics Nomad Valve Body Kit and Torque Converter Lockup kit to give you that engine braking on downhill descents so you aren't riding your brakes, and while you're at it, a trans cooler.
    Heat is what kills an auto.
    Now, where's my sticker? 😂

    • @peterj5751
      @peterj5751 2 роки тому

      I would be interested in checking whether the Patrol or Nav have the longer wheelbase. Either way I suspect the Patrol will have a better ramp over angle as they really do have better clearance in the middle.

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4 2 роки тому

      @@peterj5751 Funny you mention that.
      I just had a quick Google search and the Nav is 3.2m while the GU is 2.97m, so you certainly are right, but as with all vehicles it comes down to clearance in the way of suspension and tyre size, so depends what Tyler has in mind.
      If he went 33s with the factory steps, then I think the Nav would potentially outdrive it in relation to ramp over.
      35s on the other hand, well, I'll hand to to the troll every day of the week. 🤠

    Meant to be, Tyler. So exciting when you land a second hand vehicle in that condition and with such low mileage. A rare find indeed. Glad you went petrol too. I have a Lexus LX570 - the 5.7L petrol V8 puts a smile on my face every morning and it eats it up offroad. The smoothness, reliability and lower serving costs more than make up for the fuel costs. Bloody great find! Insanely clean to a point that it's almost a shame to know that mods will be done to it BUT, it's what they're for. If there's one thing I'll stress on, please do not fit a friggen stainless snorkel on it! Stick to a safari, had a couple of 4by's come in lately with drowned air filter boxes from the down pipe gutters that have been fitted, no rain protection when parked and the rainy wind blowing towards the opening. As for the price, I look at it this way, new they were bloody expensive and well that thing is basically new and only cost ya 30g,that's a win in my books.

      @@4x4mate38 yeah nah after seeing a couple do it and others say that the novelty of the induction noise gets annoying after a while. Worst one was an 8 month old navara come in running like absolute crap, derated, and the engine light on. Plugged the scanner in, air flow fault, opened the air cleaner box and lifted the filter up and out, water was dripping off it! Looked in the box and the bottom was still a 3rd full as when the guttering was fitted they'd blocked the filter box drain hole as most do for river cross ability. Admittedly there was windy heavy rain the night before but just unlucky that where he parks it, the rain came down with a tail wind towards his car and filled the filter box up through the guttering pipe. New filer, removed the sikaflex that sealed the drain hole and made removable plugs for when he needs to cross a river.

    Well done on the purchase. I don't think you will be disappointed - looks in neat condition. One suggestion I'd make is to ensure you manually lock the hubs when you go off-road, especially in sand/mud. I used the auto-locking option most of the time when I first got mine and shagged out the OEM hubs in about 25,000 km. At that time, I had no idea auto-locking hubs don't engage as fully as manual. The auto-locks can also disengage completely if you go in reverse. For a little extra effort, manually engaging them will perform better and last longer. If you do flog them out, AVM after-market ones are great and you don't need to use a tool to lock/unlock them.

Better than a CRD, yes it will drink a bit once the bigger tyres go on, but my CRD with 33" Nitto Trails averages about 15-16lph. All you probably need is the lift, winch bar, roof rack, manual front hubs, front locker, valve body and trans cooler, check radiator core for blockage, tyres, maybe ratio change (plenty of diff gears around), snorkel. Plus you won't have engine anxiety (CRD) or driveline anxiety (Toyota)

Ive only got a 2 inch lift and 33's but youll find thats more then adequate. One thing you might to consider when upgrading tyre size and adding weight is chnaging the diff ratios, youd probaly want 4.3. as for fuel im seeing around 20l/100 average, depending on drive type so expect an increase with bigger tyres/lift/weight. otherwise bulletproof. ive also added an extension to the rear barn door checkstrap so it opens fully now. keen to see what you do with this.

In a Gas conversion the sub tank is replaced with a long range tank and made the main tank and GAS tank installed in the position of the rear main. The reason the sub tank will be cheap is it dose not come with the mounting bracket to mount transfer pump inside.... but you can make one :) id be happy to send you a pic of what the bracket looks like... Congrats Tyler, that is a very straight looking car, a great pick up indeed, looking forward to the build

    Also. Simple free mod that may save you one day.
    The computer for the auto is in the passenger kick panel. If it gets wet your gana have a bad time.
    There is enough cable on it that you can unbolt it and put it up behind the glove box. Just incase you flood it one day.

    Great choice capable as and I don’t think you will regret the petrol.
    Nice little turbo on it like they can handle and a exhaust being auto will be great also the 4.8 have the bigger/ better break set ups as well in the gu.
    It doesn’t use much more then my patrol Ute td4.2 tricked up big power so fuel wise I am around 13l.
    The gu 3.0 crd we had was 10 litres with mods but when towing it would use a heap more and you never had the power.
    Great choice I say well done carnt wait to see the build series.
    Awesome work front bearings can be annoying but easy to do I do mine couple times a year. If you get a funny shake in the front end the radius arm bushes flog out and it’s generally them can be annoying but not a big deal. Love the mechanics rigs just awesome

    You've made the right choice. The TB48 is by far the best patrol engine. The only bad thing you hear about them is fuel eco. Jeez i didn't notice how much covid tax hass hit these patrols, 28k is insane! granted it is clean condition, only to be thrashed in the bush ahah.

    My first thing to do would be total oil change, brake pads.
    Since it’s a heavy car…and for the family, vented disc rotors, change the disc brake fluid….cheers

    Nice find and it's in bloody good Knick.
    Yes you will need very deep pockets and with the auto you'll lose a lot of engine braking.
    Looking forward to seeing what you do to it.
    Thanks for sharing
    PS love the bloopers 😂😂

    Perhaps you may give some consideration to a portal axle configuration.
    Good luck in the future,

    I wanted a 4.8 GU but went for a 120 Prado V6 because it’s smaller for everyday driving but now I’m thinking I should’ve gone the GU for a bit more room in the boot when using the 3rd row…interested to see if any size fridge fits in the back
