13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a cross-genre video game developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 4. It was released in Japan in November 2019 and worldwide in September 2020. The game is divided between adventure side-scrolling segments and real-time strategy battles, and follows thirteen high-school students in a fictionalized 1980s Japan who are dragged into a futuristic war between mechas and hostile Kaiju in a non-linear narrative.

I think there is an interview that clarified that when the 15 die due to the Kaiju (leading to their real world bodies also die inside the pods), the nanomachines break down the corpses and start the simulation again by growing new clones.
You get out of the simulation thanks to Inaba initiates the emergency escape procedure and makes Universal Control boots the 15 out (hence why they all get out of the pod early at 16 years old instead of the original plan of 20). If you go with operation Aegis of closing off all terminals, the Kaiju would be gone but the link to UC would also be cut off. So time inside the simulation would stop, the AI "NPCs" won't come back (since there is no UC to manage them anymore), and presumably all the kids will just live inside a dead world until their real world bodies die of old age.
Awh, i liked the theory i had more where there is just a giant hole underneeth the fasility where all the clones get yeeted to the moment the world loops, just to make space to start again with the new clonesXD
I thought they were actually 20 when they got out, they were just put on pause for 4 years while their bodies got fixed up the rest of the way. Megumi certainly looks... older in the ending sequence.
Honestly, this LP is better marketing than what Sony did for the game
Ya know, gaming companies hiring people do (commentary/interactive) LPs as a form of marketing would be a pretty cool buissness idea! It helps give back to the creators, and the games get more exposure :)
Reminds me of Chuggaconroy's lp on Xenoblade chronicles 1. He did a better job marketing the game through his lp than Nintendo did.
@@DLxxx I’d have to disagree, I honestly hate when people do fully sponsored gameplays because the reactions don’t feel genuine. Like if Nico was being sponsored by a company to play their game, even if he genuinely enjoyed the game, I wouldn’t be able to trust that because he’s probably not allowed to say anything bad about it. Idk, just my opinion.

I didn't think about gamers being essentially paid off/bribed to speak good about any game the market wants to push (regardless if they enjoyed it or not), which would inevitably lead to dishonest reviews and eventually ruining consumer trust. And i suppose even if it somehow didn't, Lps would still just become uninteresting if we have to question the legitimacy of every reaction and comment made in them, thus losing their appeal, thus removing the benefit of having sponsored lps in the first place.
So I guess I have to take it all back then 😆
@@DLxxx Yeah, I mean, it kinda depends which company or game. I’ve seen a few UA-camrs begging to be sponsored by games they genuinely enjoy and when that happens, it usually turns out ok. Like if half way through this, nico started being sponsored by them, I think it would probably come out the same since he showed he enjoyed it before the sponsorship.

@@rensato5027 on the one hand, Juro Izumi was apparently a gentleman "knight in shining armor" type, so he probably wouldn't make move like that until marriage, on the other hand it's rude to refuse a lady, and Megumi DEFINITELY would make a move, girl is thirsty as hell
The confusion regarding Morimura and which loop she has experienced is THE most confusing plot point in the game.
To sum it up, there’s a Morimura who has experienced Loop 1 (with Juro and Okino and the underground spaceship) and Loop 2 (the loop in which she tries to change the future with Juro)
But then that Morimura dies at the end of Loop 2 as she sends Ida forward another loop.
That Ida then appears before the Morimura who’s only experienced Loop 1 so far and tells her about Loop 2. But he lies about some things causing her to later kill Juro.
So that Morimura (the one we’ve seen for the majority of the game) has only experienced Loop 1 and Loop 3. Loop 3 being the current and last loop.
Shits crazy complicated. But viewing the first 10 or 15 events in order clears it up a bit.
I just don't understand which Morimura did we see when we saw her catsuit version on the sentinel, did her body get thrown out of the pod and replaced with Iori's?
@@00kapa There are four scenes were it looks like Morimura is in a sentinel.
Ryoko and Juro's first scene (chronologically) where Juro meets/saves Ryoko.
The time when Iori met Ei in the 2065 ruins.
When Gouto was viewing her logs during his prologue.
And when she sent Ida forward a Loop at the end of Loop 3.
However, when you go back and re-watch those scenes you realise it's never actually confirmed that she is in a Sentinel.
Its entirely possible she was just communicating with other people using some future videocall technology. Which is also why she has clothes on.

But that’s was most likely just another red-herring.
Except that those "loops 1, 2 and 3" are more like 310, 311 and 312 which is why they are called -2, -1 and "current" instead. Pretty sure Morimura was using Type 98 tank and then they just didn't want to draw another sprite for her.
Fun fact: Originally Kamitani wanted to show all of the 15 out of the pods together naked, but his team just said "Nah it's lame" so they only showed Kurabe and Yakushiji at the ending

I can’t stress how much I LOVE this games final battle. It’s a wild, epic desperate struggle from almost start to finish. You have to keep attacking, countering and using resources. But it just KEEPS GOING with almost no end in sight. I don’t know if any other battle in a video game has ever made me feel like actual combat would.
But this final battle comes CLOSE.
I’m late to playing and finishing this, and yeah... I keep questioning my life at that point until i was suddenly told I did it
They did a great job on the whole "yeah the odds of you actually surviving were really low" vibe
I literally put nenji and ei on north and south about 3 city blocks out, and tomi and natsuno oriented east/west with miura on dps and yakushiji on support. After about the first 3 rotations through the team I was able to just start dropping EMPS every single turn until survival. It was the lowest effort least epic battle ever lmao. As soon as Kaiju started moving BOOM back to timeout

haven't watched the full vid, but to answer some question:
How did they finally get out of the simulation?
- in the final scene, inaba said that they managed to make UC notice some abnormality in the system that activated the force ejection protocol. so basically, since 1) the original program was for them to leave at 20 y.o, 2) the kaiju invasion always happens after 16 years and 3) the UC doesnt recognize the kaijus as a "threat" until too late (terminal compromised), everyone always gets stuck in the simulation for the inevitable destruction. UNTIL the last loop where 426 izumi and miyuki inaba worked together to hack UC (from the command ship) with okino and baby chihiro's help. and of course, operation aegis and the sentinel pilots' efforts to keep the terminals uncompromised by the kaiju while the commands are being processed. so its really a joint effort!
What happened to the bodies in the pods if they die?
- based on kamitani's Q&A, he said that if a loop fails and all the 15 dies in the simulation, the bodies in the pods gets destroyed and recreated again. this is also why those who used sector 0 to jump into a new loop can only exist as AI as they lost their original body in the outside world. also fun fact: the bodies actually take turns being born, it takes 24 days to create a clone so all 15 kids has 24 days difference for each of their birthdays lol (that's also why ryoko, gouto, and takatoshi are a grade higher than the others in school)
Yeah that's what I thought. If the probes have genetic information, it's not like it's consumed when they create a clone. They still have another copy to use, so it makes sense that once a loop occurs, the old body is destroyed and a new one is created.

@@fierytigergaming8112 Technically, UC would force eject the clone from the simulation if they were critically wounded. But UC would still be in control of them, so they'd be unable to get out of the pod, like Okino and Tamao were, and may be stuck in an endless sleep, like Tamao was.

This game was absolutely incredible and packed full of love and detail. It really sucks this game didn't get the recognition and praise it deserves, since I very much doubt a game of this quality will come out anytime soon. Let's hope Vanillaware's next game is much more successful commercially.
It came out in September internationally. Give it some more time and exposure and more people will come to love it.
This game deserves many more sales, but it was a success for Vanillaware. It was considered a success at 130K copies sold, and it has now sold over 300K.

It's very subtle, but check out the Epilogue scene where Gouto and Shinonome are explaining the new situation to Professor Morimura.
Gouto is a bit of a formal person, and only refers to people by their last names. The only exception I remember was "Chihiro-san" for the child clone of (secretly the Professor) Morimura, and only because she insisted he call her that instead of "Ms. Morimura." Heck, he even states during a battle conversation that he dated Shinonome for a while in middle school, but he's still calling her "Shinonome-kun."
In the epilogue scene, he's calling her "Ryoko" now, no honorifics.
@@hourensoma9456 I'm saying that based on the official script book, they have a relationship chart in the last part of the book, and those two are not stated as in a romantic relationship, while other pairings like 426/Miss Morimura and Ida/Inaba are also included. Gouto and Shinonome do get closer, but not in love, at least not in the epilogue
Oh, one thing, although there are infinite possibilities in the universe, don't forget Juro Kurabe, Shu Amiguchi and Iori Fuyusaka only "happen" in this one loop, we can have tons of Izumi, Ida and Morimura, but those 3 are just rare, and accidental

@@hourensoma9456 George Kamitani was asked in an interview about Ryoko and Gouto's relationship at the end of the game and he just said it's up to the player's imagination.
I do hope they hook up after both get over their crush on an older person (Ida and Morimura).
I just want to highlight how amazing the OST for the final battle, Edge of the Future, is. The way it goes from feeling somber, to intense, then to hopeful, and then finally victorious had me on the edge of my seat when I was playing. Then I launched out of said seat when the remixed title screen theme kicked in. The music was seriously the cherry on top for this amazing game.
Nico despite having some confusion with a few plot points, that didn’t change the fact that this was one of the funnest and best LP’s you’ve ever done!
I enjoyed every moment of it, thank you for introducing myself and many others to this amazing game. I bought it like 4 episodes into this LP and it became one of my favourites games of all time!
I was waiting for this every day, I even stayed awake all night for one episode that came late

Basically everyone is Juro Izumi, and everyone else is Chihiro Morimura.
I really thankful that the ending kept it kind of ambiguous as to whether or not Ryoko and Gouto got back together, meaning Miwako still has a chance!
I also love how various couples already have children by the time they go back in the simulation, I really would have loved to see the little rascals.
An ending where everyone gets laid, and every ship is theoretically canon.

This game came out of nowhere, barely spoken about, and was fockin amazing. Even as someone who doesn't like vn style games or tower defense, I recently bought it myself because of Nico, and while I'm saving it for the future since I just saw this lp, wow, this definitely is one of my favorite lps I've seen Nico play. Even me, the kh and yakuza fanboy, loved a game like this. The characters, the artstyle, the music, the writing, chefs kiss all around. This definitely feels like a one in a generation game, and I can't wait to see what vanillaware does next.
For the next lp, I am hoping Nico would return to the action genre, either with Zelda, or, maybe No More Heroes?
This was definetly my Game of the year of 2020, hopefully we can see a LP of Trails In The Sky next or a visual novel like Higurashi

I just want to say I really enjoyed this LP. I'm glad Nico found this game. I knew about this game for a while. When I first saw a preview of it, with the visual novel aesthetic and mechas, I was immediately sold, but I never thought Nico would LP it considering he once said he wasn't into mecha anime. So this LP came as a surprise, and it was surprise for all of us, Nico included. I had my reservations about watching because I wanted to play it myself, but really, it will be a while before I can get console to play it, so by the time I get around to playing it, it will be long enough to forget most of the details.
What made this LP so enjoyable was Nico having the time of his life playing it. The reactions and overall praise he's given this game. Again, it was totally unexpected because this wasn't what he usually likes. But each episode after each episode, he's loving this game more and more, and not to mention the game itself lived up to be something amazing and enjoyable with it's art, music, gameplay and story. Just a really enjoyable let's play. I'm happy Nico enjoyed this game as much as he did, and can't wait to play it myself.

As for the next game, i think it would be great to continue the tradition of having a Zelda game alongside a Yakuza game. Either Wind Waker HD or Twilight Princess i feel would be good.

@@crimsonstarfallen9226 I would like to see him play TP, it's still my fav game in the franchise. While BoTW may have my fav story now, I still love TP's story and gameplay. I am glad though I got the Gamecube version though. If I had gotten the Wii version, I might not have loved it at all because I tried Skyward Sword and even though I liked aspects of it, the gameplay was too jarring for me to enjoy and I ended up stop playing the game.
A game I think I would like to see Nico play next would be Omori, its an interesting game that I think would fit in really well for the content he tends to work with.

When its all said and done, I can always appreciate a sugary sweet cliche as heck happy ending. (Especially moments between Juro and Megumi and Izumi and Morimora was really sweet, especially when they turned into their younger versions, showing how it all ended as it began). Thank you once again Nico, watching your passion, fascination, and immense love for this game in turn made it so wonderful to experience it along as an LP!
I whole-heartedly agree Nico, this game is truly one of the greatest games ever built with a complex story that actually ties everything in a neat bow, and then some... but if there is one fault for this game, and it was the marketing surrounding it when it launched in the U.S. It is getting traction, and hopefully it'll be considered a crowning jewel of not just games but also storytelling.
The other bonus it is that, because it throws so much information at you, you tend to forget things about it and it gives more replay value and people to go back and replay the game again and it makes people appreciate the game more in the 2nd playthrough or even a 3rd playthrough.
There are faults with it, like there are some things that might turn people away and what they do throw at you will give you headaches trying to figure it out or that some folks might get some existential dread when it comes to this stuff, but despite any faults... this game is and will forever be a masterpiece even when the market doesn't know it.
I predict that in a few years, this game will become well-known and loved by a lot of people with a thriving fanbase similar to Danganronpa, Okami, and the Yakuza games. Games that get more popular as time goes on.
God I hope so. This game more than deserves a thriving fanbase.
Any issues I had with this game got solved by the end, so glad every convoluted twist was explained, also the crossed shipping mess makes more sense now if you take into account Universal control went through many different variables in each loop.
I really need to play this game SO MUCH. (Haven’t spoiled myself, just wanted to hear his final thoughts).

I kind of love the implication from Yakushiji's comments as well as from 426 and Juro Izumi of 2188 that Juro is destined to have a growth spurt after high school, going from scrawny high school kid to action hero physique.

Nico, this has gotta go down as one of your best LPs in history. I know it will for me personally. I still remember October 15th like it was yesterday. I woke up and checked my video feed, and I noticed that you had started a new LP. Recognizing the thumbnail from another video. I decided to open up and watch. I remember that in the scene of the first episode in the nurse's office where I was hooked. From then on I have fallen in love with this game and its small fandom. I have never fallen in love, or been as passionate about a game as much as this one before So from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU Nico. Thank you so much for introducing me to this gem of a game. It may be over now, but it will always hold a special place in our hearts.

I love how Izumi has basically filled the role of Megumi's sarcastic father-in-law with Fluffy and mooch of a brother-in-law with Shiba.
Kurabe, Megumi, and Izumi would honestly make for such a wholesome family dynamic, lol. You've got the sweet, tender motherly figure, a gentle, endearing guy who's always passionate about his hobbies, and the snarky, sarcastic, yet still lovable asshole.
I can just _see_ Shiba constantly trolling Juro in his freetime and Megumi having to reprimand him for it while cooking them both dinner 😆

I read that post-launch interview. Seems like accessing the Sentinels shifts everyone's vision to a game-like view from inside their pods, so that's the in-game reason why Destruction looks the way it does. That's what they're all seeing, is a game board.
So they actually explained what happens to the pods after each loop in a spoiler interview that the director of the game did. Essentially, nanomachines break them down and make new human beings.
Okay that bit about the Tamao Kurabe (Granny) is actually super useful to know because I spent half the series wondering if the kids actually had parents at all or just had UC feeding them excuses for why their parents weren't around.
I would recommend that nico makes the analysis video a stream instead so that we could all provide any input if there's anything he may be confused about. plus, more head figuring this shit out would be more effective than just one.
Nico, at some point in the future would you be willing to do a character tier list of the cast?

@@fierytigergaming8112 Plus I believe it introduces the world better. Also going from CS to TiTS can be very jarring and may lead you to hate how slow it goes and such. Such as BigKlingly when he first played it though he eventually came around.

Also Aegis rim for me is definitely up there with Yakuza and persona 5 and Trails And Danganronpa As my favorite games of all time that are single players!!!!

I just wanna say, thank you for playing this game. I had been aware of its existence for a while, but you doing this LP and seeing the first episode or two is what finally convinced me to pick the game up and play it myself. (And then I promptly binged what was there of this LP so I could be here for the finale. Lol) This is quickly becoming one of my favorite games, and I don’t know if I would have been fully convinced to try it if it weren’t for this LP.
This was a fantastic LP for my favorite game of all time, it was a joy to watch all the episodes over the course of a few days, I decided to do this after your video essay on why 13 Sentinels was a fantastic game, which I'll probably have to rewatch now because I forever hunger for 13 Sentinels content and that vid was fantastic.

Thank you Nico for bringing this game to my attention. I saw an ad for it one day and completely forgot to take a note of it but this LP reminded me what I forgot. It was a ride and a half!
Not rlly done with the video yet but it just hit me, it's really tragic how 2188 Megumi was just a child during the whole ordeal with the 15 survivors in the end and she probably witnessed the others killing each other one by one and I'm guessing she was killed early on since Ryoko and Ida were the last ones to die

The Final Battle really makes me think I should grind
It gets super easy if you bring Super Large Missile - it one shots (almost) everything in a large area and fully replenishes your EP with all the kills, so you can just spam it.
And so, a glorious series comes to an end.
Just gonna be real - this might be my favorite LP you've ever done. I was SO excited to see you continue with the story and after every episode I just wanted more. I adored this and it was so fun, I'm so happy you loved the game and convinced so many penguins to give the game a try!

Other than that, it would also be nice to see Nico return to FE3H since it has been so long since Nico finished the Blue Lions route and it would be interesting to see the game fron the perspective of another faction.

I first heard this game from the positive word of mouth from the likes and Sakurai and Yoko Taro, and decided to get it day 1 when i saw the reviews praising the story. Binged it in 3 days and loved it so much its solidly in one of my favorite video gaming experience, and I shilled the fuck out of it in the discord and to my friends. Never in a million year did I imagine that you would actually LP the game at all, let alone that soon. I was overflowing with joy when I saw the first episode got uploaded. The LP has been such a blast watching you enjoy the game so much and theorize everything, getting things wrong and right.
Once again, thank you for playing this game.
For recommendations about the next LP, I highly recommend 428 Shibuya Scramble, as it is basically the closest thing to 13 Sentinels in my knowledge. Its a VN that uses real life pictures as its main presentation, and is incredibly funny and engaging. For the second recommendation, Trails in the Sky FC is also a great game, the first in the Trails series that has incredible world building, fun characters, and highly engaging story.

My friends still see my tastes in games, anime, stories, etc. as "not great" or "hit-or-miss", mostly due to the first interactions I had with them years ago. I started talking to them about this game about how amazing and well-crafted it was, and after a fair amount of convincing and briefly describing what the game was about - without going into too much detail - they seemed a bit intrigued. I really hope they try it out, cause it was so worth it for me, who almost never gets invested in mecha-based franchises.
For the next LP i hope Nico plays Higurashi When They Cry, i think Higurashi horror is a good change of pace for the channel (plus it would also lead to a possible Umineko LP and THAT would be really awesome)

You misunderstood the bombing dream thing. It doesn't specify that Morimura when she's just mentioned offhand because she is the only Morimura we call Morimura, unlike Izumi where he has to be specified because there are several different Izumi's that are important. It was saying that the events of the bombing happened one loop ago, it wasn't saying that Morimura was from one loop ago
Finally finished this play through! Whew 🥰 I honestly started this thinking it was something else, but Nico always manages to make genres that I’m not familiar with at all interesting. I really loved this game and I’m happy I gave it a chance.

Did the math, there were in there for roughly 4992 years, which is exactly 312 loops. This means if they looped one more time, then halfway into that loop the facility would break down.
