I too have the call of the curlews in my ears from my childhood ...then they were less prevalent for years ..Thankfully I am enjoying their sounds again on Clew Bay near Newport in Co. Mayo.
As a child I often heard this in the distance - after I'd been put to bed on dusky summer evenings in rural Ulster. Sense of bigness and other-worldiness.
I have the same memory, only in northern England. I remember being instantly transported to a far-off, ethereal place as a laid in the darkness transfixed. It was beautiful. The fact that I had no idea what was making the sound made it even better.
I found a curlew with a damaged wing in the garden this morning. I was going to take it to the vets but the curlew died before I could get there..... Rest in peace my little curlew friend.
Love to hear the bubbling trill of the curlew, always remember this sound and it was often accompanied by the call of the redshank and the very eerie sound of snipe 'drumming' in the sky, natures music
a spot of wild camping in the peak district on Marsden Moor only to be awoken at first light about 4am by this magical sight and sound of the curlew - very memorable for the summer solstice!
Heard this evocative sound from our country walk near Wigan, Lancs last night. The bird roase from a freshly cut hay field and continued to entrance us until dusk and on waking again from our hotel bedroom windows. Aaah! Memories of my childhood in the fields of rural Gloucestershire, beside the river Severn and the Stroud Gloucester Canal.
I have always heard their sound whilst out walking in the Dales but never saw one, until today! I mimicked its call and it flew towards me circling and calling to me for about a quarter of a mile it was lovely!
Childhoos memories here too although I did have the good fortune to encounter one recently on a visit to my birthplace. What's special here is the silence, the suspended dynamic of the absence of all sound other than the bird, such that you can almost smell the heath. Compare your grassland scene to meerkats in the kalhari! Such charm, and in the sky there is so much more grace than a wheeling gull
I heard this lovely sound from my kitchen and saw the birds flying in the sky and did not know what they were ,I heard there were curllews around the area so I looked for bird sounds and found your beautiful film .I hope I hear "my" curlews again.
indeed one of the most beautiful sounds of any creature. there is a group that passes in my neighborhood and their song echo off the buildings give me the chills man. they dont come in winter though.
Here's a poem by Welsh poet, Idris Davies. 'Blaen Rhymni' is the area of moorland at the top of the Rhymni valley in Gwent, Wales. It is on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons THE CURLEWS OF BLAEN RHYMNI The curlews of Blaen Rhymni are calling in the night And all the hills are magical because the moon is bright, And I walk alone and listen, along the mountain way To curlew calling curlew in hollows far away. And the crying of the curlew makes more sad and strange and fair The moon above the moorland and the clear midnight air, And the mountain breeze is laden with some echoes that must be The echoes of a music beyond humanity. And curlew calls to curlew and I remember as I go The merrier sounds and echoes out of seasons long ago, When the nights were full of laughter and all the days were bright And the heart too young to listen to the curlew in the night.
I'm in Alberta, near the Glenmore Reservoir, and I'm hearing what I think are curlews flying overhead. It's been going on for a few weeks. They don't sound quite the same as this, but close to it. They are a "species at risk" on the prairies of course. Lots of shorebirds come to the prairies for breeding.
I have always look forward to the cry of the Curlew when I visit a piece of ground just west of Pitlochry, Perthshire but have not heard them for three years. I ask walkers if they have heard them and none have been reported to me. Do hope they are thriving somewhere. Really glad but sad to listen to them here! Thank you for the recording.
We have them in the fields behind our house, they re-appear every early April. Im in rural Monmouthshire, perhaps if people see this and state the location they see Curlews we can get an idea of the range of these beautiful birds and if the population is diminishing
Beautiful video, beautiful songs. I came here after reading Helen Maria Williams's "Sonnet to the Curlew" and the poem makes so much more sense after hearing this "melancholy wail" for myself.
I'm reading a wonderful book and they are talking about one of the main characters riding a carriage back from town and the chill of the air is on his face, the moon is full and low on the horizon and the call of Curlew across the highfields... I just had to find out what they sounded like
Thanks again! If you would like to buy any of them I'm sure we could arrange something - or you could just watch the UA-cam and National Geographic (betacygni) versions.
Thank you. Will keep in your filming location reference and put a link to this video in the credits. My recording is non-profit and for the benefit of those not so good with sheet music. The tune is Irish but our session is in Shropshire. ua-cam.com/video/lBnicGuv-ps/v-deo.html
Been listening and watching them all week in Addingham Moorside Yorkshire. Amazingly beautiful site and sound!.
Sat outside my campervan near rothbury in northumberland and heard the curlews. One of the best sounds in the world

Reminds me of childhood summers, just warm and magical.

Fantastic; just been out walking on the North Fylde coast listening to curlews at sunset.
Brings back some wonderfully emotive memories of my childhood. Thank you!

This is the Eurasian Curlew, the ones you get in Canada are a bit different so I guess their calls are too.

We hear this all the time, but more in autumn. Right by the sea in Kerry.

This should be Finnish national anthem.
Great, what a magnificent world !
I wonder how do the heavens look like ?? :)
such a beautiful, atmospheric sound, a tragedy their habitat is slowly being wiped out in Ireland.
One is in my backyard
Thanks again! If you would like to buy any of them I'm sure we could arrange something - or you could just watch the UA-cam and National Geographic (betacygni) versions.
Saw 9 recently.
May I use some of this footage to accompany my recording of the reel 'The Curlew' on whistle ?
Providing you give credit to the original video I don't think there would be a problem - and thank you for checking with me.

Sounds a bit more discant than the ones here
I am beginning to hate Curlews because there is nonsense about Curlews every time I go online
