We got an Atari in 1982 or so and it was a huge shock, my (single) mom had told us that we were too poor to get one, so opening one on Xmas morning was spectacular. I think we only had Combat on the day, but that was enough, it was an awesome 2 player game! I loved the tanks in the maze. Later we got Pacman, Defender and Space Invaders and that was it, I was living the dream of having my own video arcade (when my mom didn't want to watch her soap operas of course). There was always that one kid who used to chew the rubber on their Atari joystick and it would be covered in teeth marks, I remember that as well.
Paul, in 1988, I got myself the Platinum Series B.C. Rich Warlock !!! It was the biggest thing I had ever bought besides my car (1978 Monte Carlo). I loved it even though it wouldn't stay in tune. I played it all the way up until 1996.
I might have commented this before, but in 2000, someone broke into my home. The only things the took were my Atari 2600, the around 40 games I had for it, my collecovision and all those games, and my intellivision, that had a voice module and all the games. The burglar busted down my entire back door and found my consoles and games in my top closet shelf. He didn't take my DVD player, or computer. I still wonder to this day, who burglarizes homes looking for classic gaming consoles?
I had the exact same model VCR! I got it for my 8th grade graduation present in 1982! It was a revelation to be able to record things directly from the TV! It was a beast, in all of its top-loading, fancy-wood-paneled, glory!
It was my pride and joy for at least 5 years. When it died, I opened it up, messed around with the giant circuits within, and somehow made it work for another 4 years. And I also taped You Might Think with the missing effects at the end. My tape is long gone, but I remembered that all these years. Then I saw yours! You bring back the mad memories, Paul, and your music is so much fun! Run for President already!
Yeah he definitely does deserve more subs. 3 years after you posted your message, he has nearly 37k..but that isn't enough. I really think that young people should be forced to watch his videos, as they could learn a lot from them. What I mean by that, is how Paul is appreciative of things....things that kids these days seem to just take for granted. There is also a very strong family vibe to his videos..and we all know that the concept of a normal, loving family is pretty much dead in today's society.
Thanks for sharing. We got our Atari 2600 x-mas 1982 and VCR 1984 with corded remote and a huge big satellite dish that had to be cemented in the back yard in 1985. I bet when you got cable, MTV wasn't the only thing you tried to watch scrambled......LOL
Wow! A gaming system, VCR, computer, Video camera, cable tv, and a CD player! Those technologies must have been really exciting to get for the first time when they were relatively new.
Family Christmas Gifts. Top idea! I remember when the pubs in England had video games built into tables so you could have a pint and play at the same time! This was also in the 1980's. Great times!
The first home video game I ever played was Pong on my cousin's ColecoVision. It wasn't until years later that my brother got a Nintendo system and we played Legend of Zelda and Mario Brothers constantly. Before we had our own VCR, my brother would rent one for the weekend at our local Mom & Pop shop. It was humongous and weighed a tonne. I still remember what movies he rented the first time; _Parasite_ with Demi Moore and _Deathstalker_ with Barbi Benton. One big family gift we got one year was a cool air hockey game which we played constantly until one of my brothers fell on it and cracked the "ice" completely across, putting an end to our fun.
You got some bizarre choices for games over the years, was it your Dad who made the buying decisions? You also had some weird C64 games in the US, over here it was nearly all arcade ports or movie licenses.
I believe it was entirely my dad who made those decisions, Larry. I think he must have thought he was buying "safe" games that we could all play with no violence or anything. Also, he liked sports, which I never liked. I think he might have been disappointed that I didn't get into baseball or anything. There were so many strange Commodore 64 games and that was all we seemed to get. I want to do a video about some of them soon. This was the first one that we got when we bought the computer: ua-cam.com/video/YiiLIDlZNww/v-deo.html
This was a great video and brought back a lot of memories for myself. Those Christmas's of the 80s were golden for me and are some of my happiest moments in life. Wishing you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas as well.
You did well over the years. I wanted an Atari so bad. My parents bought me a Philips Videopac G7000 (Maganavox Odyssey 2 in the US). The following year it was a Commodore Vic-20. Close, but no cigar every time.
We never got family gifts for Christmas. My bigger brother and I were too far apart in years for any kind of real agreement. We did however love playing Nintendo together, though we never go my NES for Christmas. That was a birthday gift. Glad you got that camera because, as you have made a video about before, it changed everything.
Hi Paul, I very rarely comment on videos but this is one instance where I have to... I have to tell you, you have one of the best & most interesting channels on UA-cam. I'm subscribed to approximately over 300 channels but out of all of those...you are in my top 3. I'm personally big on the documentation of ones life, I've done it myself as far back when I was 12...but even before then at a younger age, I always took a liking to the idea of "time capsuling" my life events. I'm 28 now. Wish I would have done it to the degree you did and kept it as a regular commitment as it's an amazing thing to look back on fond & great memories from the past, which I see you have a lot of. Keep up the awesome work, all those years of messing around with that video camera, audio recorder & all the material possessions you have kept with you throughout your life, has made for an incredible time capsule for many future generations to enjoy. Thank you, Mr. Original Vlogger. - Mark
Thanks Mark, I am very pleased that you hold my work in such high regard. I have only done a small amount of what I hope to accomplish and I hope that you will enjoy all of it.
Wow! All those modern things! You were pretty lucky! My dad wouldnt buy any of that stuff and we never had cable tv. My brother lived down the road and he had to have all the latest technology including a Bata machine. He said the VHS was not going to ever become popular. Boy was he wrong! He also invested in the first ever Video game system. Commander wasvmy favorite. My wifes cousin gave me the one she grew up with. She was going to sell it at a yard sale. I snapped it up. I have all the original games and even found some extra controllers for it. Unfortunately the original box and manuals are long gone. Have a Merry Christmas and looking forward to the new year with your video's.
Yeah, the betamax was a better quality in my opinion. Im not sure why VHS became the standard. They have good ones for sale on Bonanza. Pretty good prices too. Merry Christmas Paul! 🎄
I think because VHS marketed their machines to be more affordable and their tape format allowed more recording time per cassette. Even if slower speeds degraded the picture, on old TV's back then, it didn't make that noticeable of a difference to most people.
Yeah, I figured it was probably a price issue. And like you said, most people probably didn't even notice a difference. But I thought Beta was better in general.
I was just thinking about that the other day. How the weeks leading up to Christmas just got more and more exciting when you were a kid. Now every year, the buildup to Christmas is less exciting - there's less time to even consider it. Christmas day is still just as wonderful though!
So great! Your journals and recordings are priceless artifacts! I think we had the same VCR! And we also got CD player in 1988. Have you ever seen "Freaks & Geeks"? One episode had a particularly poignant scene involving a gift of Atari 2600. I begged for and got a tape recorder for Christmas 1982, for "making skits", and on Christmas day walked around the house interviewing everyone over at our house for the holiday. You've inspired me to take the tape out of the archives for a spin.
Ellen Jo Roberts- My dad first got his Phillips CD HIFI player in 1985 with vinyl at top and 2 tape decks at each side...The 2 albums he chose with it were-Dire Straits-Brothers in Arms + Kate Bush-Hounds of Love :-)
I fondly remember our first VCR -- a General Electric VHS player. The format war between VHS and Beta was still raging at the time, and luckily, the one we picked won out. We could never figure out how to set the time on the digital clock display, and it would always flash "Sun 12:00". We never had the Atari or Commodore 64 though. We had the Odyssey 2 and the Colecovision Adam. The Adam had those cassette tape drives instead of floppy disks, and they were notorious for not working properly. Plus, if you left a tape in the drive when you powered up, you'd get a power surge that would wipe out anything you stored on the tape, which sucked royally. The cartridge games were cool, and it was backwards compatible so it could play the old Coleco games too. Also, I didn't know this at the time, but there was this device on the black market you could plug into the side of the Adam's CPU so it could play all the old Atari 2600 and 5200 games. My favorite Adam games were Pitfall, Carnival, Mr. Do, Centipede, Gorf and Buck Rogers.
Hi Paul I looked up the model number of the rca camcorder you have, and it is a 1984 RCA CKC-019, sorry I don't have that right now, but I do have the same Commodore 64 computer.
I think that I also got a Atari 2600 in that year as well, the games I got was Combat, E.T. The Video Game, and Pitfall. We never had a Nintendo but I would sometimes play it at my cousins house. I lost interest in playing the Atari 2600 and couldn't make sense out of E.T. What was your favorite game on the Combat tape mine was Tanks where the ammo would bounce off of the wall.
We got ET also, that came out the next year 1982. Actually, my sister got it. It was specifically hers and not a family gift. But she let me play it. I think my favorite on Combat was the biplanes. I liked that you could switch direction really fast and shoot back.
Love your channel! I found it by researching researching Sony Handycam bloggers. I run a retro gaming channel and wanted to use one for my own vblogs (I only do 1 or so a month). If you still like to dig out the atari, you can buy a thing called a "Harmony" cart. It allows you to put games on micro sd and play them on the real hardware! People are still developing atari games too for fun, so you can add those to the cart as well.
Cool video! I like that your parents bought family gifts. Did your siblings ever make their own videos? I also love the old school stationary CD player. Did it have the index feature? I've only ever seen that function used on Classical CDs and most modern CD players don't offer that function.
Awesome trip down, eh hem, someone else's memory lane lol. I still have my Atari and Nintendo, my boys like the Nintendo, but are scared of the Atari. We will be doing a Game Play on both soon for our channel, hope you watch!
Yes! I watched channel 7 and 9 all the time. Sometimes I'd watch a show on our main affiliate channel, then I could turn to one of those and catch a different episode of the same show right after!
The tripod is still at my mom's house. My son started using it eventually and now I think one of the legs on it is messed up. She still has the Mad Magazine board game over there as well. I bought my own copy of it last year...it's in one of my thrift store haul videos.
We used the 1984 camera up until 1986. That's when we got a better camera, there's a video of how the first 1986 one we got broke and we had to return it: ua-cam.com/video/QFosvGMwF9o/v-deo.html
I remember in one video how you said you melted the buttons on the family camcorder. Did you ever get that fixed, and does that camera still work? Also, which do you prefer and why -- camcorders that use full-size VHS tapes or smaller-sized VHS-C tapes?
I have 2 of those. The first one and the 2+. I wanted the 2+ because it has some unreleased games and home brew games on it. Even though I got it 2 years ago, I still have not played it. I just don't get much free time between working and UA-cam, my music career and household upkeep. All I do is work!
Great video Paul. I have one question to ask. Did you ever got severely punished after getting caught by your parents for finding the Atari 2600 console before everyone woke up, or did you just get scolded by them?
Paul I believe you will gain more fans if you display your content in 720 or 1080. I clicked on your video and saw the 4:3 ratio and the name Original Vlogger and thought someone had ripped "Weird Paul's" original content. Come to find out, it's your channel. Excessive use of the vhs style conveys that the content is dated and irrelevant to most users, so they click away after 6 seconds. I know why you're doing the VHS look (love it), but I think it's keeping your numbers down if the entire video runs with the VHS effect applied. At least intro your videos with good HD 16:9, then cut back and forth from 4:3 to 16:9 throughout. I like your channel a lot. May the force be with you.
Man It would have been awsome to grow up in 80s back when the 2600 was a new system. Sure it was a pricey gift with a price tag of 200 bucks or $778 injusted for inflation,But after the game crash of 83 the price dropped
I rarely get to play any of them. There's very little time in my life to enjoy anything other than performing and making UA-cam videos. But I do enjoy those things!
I remember wanting an Atari 2600 so bad; I even memorized the commercial & sang the song to try to convince my parents! ua-cam.com/video/913xrM9FYpI/v-deo.html We never did get a 2600, instead we got an Atari 800XL Computer with Pac-Man (and Popeye I think)we also had an Atari 5200 later on (although I don't remember it)I only know this because there were 5200 carts in my room, so we must have owned it! I guess it was just as disappointing back then as it is now for me not to remember it!
Hay Paul, Love your channel. We would like to invite you and your blog to come join Sloth Radio NetWork. I think you would fit right in. Have a listen and then drop us a line if you'd like to work on something, maybe a show or just adding your blogs to our station. O one last thing see we are a dysfunction family of sloth's and we can't offer you any pesos, hell we havent even paid our selves. But please stop by and have a listen and see if you would like to join our mayhem. Go to www.SlothIR.com Thanks. :)
Looks very interesting! I am so behind in everything right now though. I haven't had time to even make a new video in 2 weeks. I hope to catch up soon!
I lament getting rid of Atari and over 100 diff games. Worst decision ever. Antiques Roadshow told everyone their systems were worth a fortune. Thanks Roadshow :(
This is like watching the home movies AVGN sometimes shows clips of. Very enjoyable. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I have about 130 hours of home movies from the 80s.
Ah...the Atari 2600. I have fond memories of that console. It was the first console I ever owned!
+Tipster Gaming me too!
you very lucky as a kid
We got an Atari in 1982 or so and it was a huge shock, my (single) mom had told us that we were too poor to get one, so opening one on Xmas morning was spectacular. There was always that one kid who used to chew the rubber on their Atari joystick and it would be covered in teeth marks, I remember that as well.
Wow, that sounds like a truly special Christmas! I never saw anyone chew the joystick!
I was born in 1981! :) great year! I also got my NES in 89!
I can still psychosomatically smell the Nintendo warming up after hours of zelda. best xmas
Yep!
Paul, in 1988, I got myself the Platinum Series B.C. Rich Warlock !!! It was the biggest thing I had ever bought besides my car (1978 Monte Carlo). I loved it even though it wouldn't stay in tune. I played it all the way up until 1996.
Nice! I have definitely had problems keeping it in tune, especially with the whammy bar. I pretty much had to quit using the whammy bar.
Man that story makes me very sad.
I had the exact same model VCR! I got it for my 8th grade graduation present in 1982! It was a revelation to be able to record things directly from the TV! It was a beast, in all of its top-loading, fancy-wood-paneled, glory!
It was a very fine piece of machinery.
Run for President already!
im pretty sure my dad had the same one i remember seeing it always in the basment storage area as a 6 year old...never saw it again after we moved...
You deserve more subs this is really legit
Thanks! I have gotten almost 1000 subs in the last month, so things are picking up!
Remember those corded remotes, lol. I tried to watch everything there was scrambled, I didn't even care what it was!
Wow, did people spill drinks all over it causing the player to lose their last man?
Parasite and Deathstalker!! Man, I wish I had been there to watch those on that rented VCR.
Hope you have a great Christmas
Thanks Chris, you too!
You got some bizarre choices for games over the years, was it your Dad who made the buying decisions?
You also had some weird C64 games in the US, over here it was nearly all arcade ports or movie licenses.
I was relieved when he finally got Star Raiders.
Even Star Raiders was somewhat boring!
I believe it was entirely my dad who made those decisions, Larry. I think he must have thought he was buying "safe" games that we could all play with no violence or anything. Also, he liked sports, which I never liked. I think he might have been disappointed that I didn't get into baseball or anything.

ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL
Aah good old "Dad" games, the sole reason most kids had Golf games in their game collection back in the day :D
Yeah! For some reason he never bought golf, but he did buy (gulp!) chess!
Awesome post!! Merry Christmas Weird Paul to you and your loved ones!!
Thanks Stephanie! You too!
I had a TRS80, and stayed inside much of my 10 year old summer writing programs.....mostly games, all in text!
That was one computer that we never had. I wrote plenty of programs on that C-64, though!
Wow, so COOOOL Paul!
Thanks Johnny!
I wish more families would gift like yours did. Kids are spoiled nowadays, with all of their iPhones and Playstations.
Christmas has kind of turned into a "how much can you spend" holiday now.
This was a great video and brought back a lot of memories for myself. Those Christmas's of the 80s were golden for me and are some of my happiest moments in life. Wishing you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas as well.
I'm glad to hear that, I still think back every Christmas to those Christmas Eve's of the past and all the anticipation. Merry Christmas!
Loved this video Paul! Merry Christmas.
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you!
You did well over the years. I wanted an Atari so bad. My parents bought me a Philips Videopac G7000 (Maganavox Odyssey 2 in the US). The following year it was a Commodore Vic-20. Close, but no cigar every time.
Close, yes!
Great video! cant wait for christmas to come again!
Thanks! It's right around the corner!
Happy Everything.
You damn skippy.
I have an Atari and its still fun today as it was when I first got it
It really is! Those games are timeless.
We never got family gifts for Christmas. My bigger brother and I were too far apart in years for any kind of real agreement. We did however love playing Nintendo together, though we never go my NES for Christmas. That was a birthday gift. Glad you got that camera because, as you have made a video about before, it changed everything.
The camera was probably the most important thing my parents ever bought.

We were lucky! It helped that my dad loved new tech stuff. So even though we weren't rich, he would save up for those things. Merry Christmas Scott!
Awesome! I loved Atari so much! Our first VCR was a Betamax.
We never had a Betamax...I still don't have one! But my dad did get one, after I moved out.

Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas Timothy!

Merry Christmas Paul, have a good'n
Thanks David, you too!
:D this made me do happy. remembering the excitement of Christmas as a kid!
I was just thinking about that the other day. How the weeks leading up to Christmas just got more and more exciting when you were a kid. Now every year, the buildup to Christmas is less exciting - there's less time to even consider it. Christmas day is still just as wonderful though!
Hi mighty Paul.. long time not seeing (sorry my fault) Thank you so much for your great videos and happy holiays :)
Happy Holidays to you as well!

Oh! and the Mad Magazine game! We had that too! A family fave.
Thanks Ellen! I saw a couple episodes of Freaks & Geeks, maybe not that one though. I'm glad you still have that tape from 1982, that is wonderful!
I remember us sitting at the table playing it - had to all get up and switch chairs!
Ellen Jo Roberts- My dad first got his Phillips CD HIFI player in 1985 with vinyl at top and 2 tape decks at each side...The 2 albums he chose with it were-Dire Straits-Brothers in Arms + Kate Bush-Hounds of Love :-)
Hey Paul. Great video. My dad still has a beta vcr which i believe he bought in 82 or 83. Awesome looking guitar, looks like a bc rich.
Hi Kitty. Glad you liked it! That's great that VCR is still working! I hope to get a beta vcr one day. It is a BC Rich guitar and I still play it now.
I fondly remember our first VCR -- a General Electric VHS player. The format war between VHS and Beta was still raging at the time, and luckily, the one we picked won out. Mary Chris Mess to you Paul! A Weird Paul Holiday Album would sure be awesome, Cheers!
Thank you, to you as well! I did make a Weird Paul holiday album in 1989 and you can download it for free! ua-cam.com/video/AlJOVyJEcY0/v-deo.html
Hi Paul I looked up the model number of the rca camcorder you have, and it is a 1984 RCA CKC-019, sorry I don't have that right now, but I do have the same Commodore 64 computer.
That is correct. Do you have any games for the Commodore 64 computer?
yep, i have clowns
Cool! I have that too, I have always wanted to make a video about it
I got a nes classic mini this Christmas so it's full circle for me
Very cool, Mark! I think my nephew is getting one of those. I want to get one too, once the price drops a little!
Cool Warlock.
Thank you!

People are still developing atari games too for fun, so you can add those to the cart as well.
Thanks! That cart sounds amazing...I have a few of those homebrew games on my Atari Flashback!
Let me know when you upload them and I'll try to check them out!
I had that mad magazine board game
I have 2 atari 2600 clones, they are called atari rambo, and they were popular in poland.
i dont know shit about guitars but that thing looks bad ass!
Very cool. same age lol
Atari! I miss mine :(
Even though I have it, I still miss it - I never seem to have any time to play it!
Out of curious do you have a Mad Magazine collection? If so id love to see it
Fantastic video! Before you got cable television, did you get either WTRF or WTOV on your TV besides the Pittsburgh stations?
Yes! I watched channel 7 and 9 all the time. Sometimes I'd watch a show on our main affiliate channel, then I could turn to one of those and catch a different episode of the same show right after!
I got cable TV in the late '90s. Before that, I would watch WTOV and the local Pittsburgh stations regularly.
Do you still have the tripod or Mad Magazine board game?
The tripod is still at my mom's house. My son started using it eventually and now I think one of the legs on it is messed up. She still has the Mad Magazine board game over there as well. I bought my own copy of it last year...it's in one of my thrift store haul videos.
why is this weird? I can relate to almost everything.. oh... wait... shit
Awesome original Atari 2600,does it still work? Do u still play it ???
Basically your 1984 video camera is being used right up until 1991 and I assumed that the one of your home video from 1991 has a better quality to it.
We used the 1984 camera up until 1986. That's when we got a better camera, there's a video of how the first 1986 one we got broke and we had to return it: ua-cam.com/video/QFosvGMwF9o/v-deo.html
@@weirdpaulp so it was the 2nd 86 video camera that was being use until 91 and by the way your son is 2 years my senior.
I remember in one video how you said you melted the buttons on the family camcorder. Did you ever get that fixed, and does that camera still work? Also, which do you prefer and why -- camcorders that use full-size VHS tapes or smaller-sized VHS-C tapes?
Paul, what do you think of the Atari flashback systems? Have you gotten one?
I have 2 of those. The first one and the 2+. I wanted the 2+ because it has some unreleased games and home brew games on it. Even though I got it 2 years ago, I still have not played it. I just don't get much free time between working and UA-cam, my music career and household upkeep. All I do is work!
Do you still have the Atari ?? Does it still work???What about the c64 computer
The Atari and c64 that we got for Christmas back then are both still at my parents house and both still work. I have my own of each now.
MAD MAGAZINE BOARD GAME!!!
i see ur firrst video is your eat mcdonald in chinese translate!
u r awesome!
Thank you so much!
Were you a bad boy the year y'all only got a tripod? ;)
Merry Christmas Paul!
Merry Christmas Mike! Actually, we used that tripod more than almost any other present we ever got!
hi paul
Hi
ORIGINAL VLOGGER 80'S WEIRD PAUL Hey what camara you use to record? It looks vintage
It's from the 90's, it's this one: ua-cam.com/video/sv6FUE6eXpU/v-deo.html
Great video Paul. I have one question to ask.
Did you ever got severely punished after getting caught by your parents for finding the Atari 2600 console before everyone woke up, or did you just get scolded by them?
Just scolded. I was never "severely punished" that I can remember, ever.
Did you ever get asteroids for your atari?
There's no VHS effect. This is all filmed on VHS tape, as you will soon find out: ua-cam.com/video/sv6FUE6eXpU/v-deo.html
Man It would have been awsome to grow up in 80s back when the 2600 was a new system. Sure it was a pricey gift with a price tag of 200 bucks or $778 injusted for inflation,But after the game crash of 83 the price dropped
Yeah, and the games got REAL cheap and we were able to get lots of them!
:3
Sell me some of your old gaming systems lol. You're such a lucky dude. Do you actually play them all?
I rarely get to play any of them. There's very little time in my life to enjoy anything other than performing and making UA-cam videos. But I do enjoy those things!
😎
good video Paul and it me just A different account
Thanks!
There is actualy the name of your Black Atari 2600,The term is called the "Vader Model" sense it is all Black
I have 3 Ataris. The Vader, the other model with the wood grain and a Sears Tele-Games.
Wow and the JR
I think you all the diffrent verisons of the 2600s
You have the Darth Vader Atari.
i remember Diamond Mine. Good game.... Happy Holidays Weird Paul!
I got a lot of solid playing time out of that game! Happy Holidays, Steve!
What year was your baby brother in?
1983
CoolI was born in 1982 and my brother was born in 1984.
Convincing parents to buy things was always quite the trick!

Thanks Roadshow :(
Man.
