That didn't work for me, but now that I am single again I have over 30 different phono cartridges to choose from. And a high end stereo to boot 😂😂😂

Hi Melinda.. I've watched all your videos in the last two weeks. They're great! Presentation is awesome. I just started collecting vinyl again. It amazes me the condition of the lp's you find. I went to my local used record store and the owner recommended I wash my hands after I got done. Never going back! Love colored vinyl from way back in the 70's. Grand Funk Railroad We're an American Band yellow vinyl, stunned me! Anyway, I love your videos!!

Hi Melinda. Amazing that you're showing that Etta James record. She has been on my mind because someone else ( don't recall who) recently mentioned her and I have put her releases on the list of ones I need to get. Now here you come piling on. Lol I love it. You're so right about her voice; absolutely beautiful. Glad you got the Ortofon Blue. That's my main cart right now too. It should sound even better after some playing time. I love the image that came to my mind of you in that AMC burning up the boulevard listening to KISS. Lol All the best.

Man I love that Etta James album! What a score! I have a reissue test press of it done by Speakers Corner but man would I love to get an original of that one. Jade Warrior would make for a nice way to test out the cart.

Yes, my husband is really good at picking out gifts for me. Anything about music makes me happy. I have seen the Etta James album a few times but had to pass on the first two because of price. I hope you find one but a test press sounds very cool to me. It was really sweet of Billy to sign my copy of his album. Does that make my copy more valuable?(Just kidding) 😀
Cool finds Melinda! I love your MFSL pickups recently. I put the 2M Blue on my TT a while back. It’s a great cartridge. I was with Billy when he picked up that Kiss. It was cool to see him find something he was looking for for another. Keep up the good work. Your videos are always getting better and better.

Congrats on the 2M Blue. That is what I have on my Fluance RT85 and it's awesome. Great VCLT as well. That Smashes, Thrashes and Hits is a tough one to find. Very cool Dolly single too. Rock on Melinda.

Hey, Melinda! I had recently been given, from my parent's collection, the same Etta James record, At Last. And I tell you, playing it brought back memories of my mom singing along to the songs as she played them. She really enjoyed that album, and now I have it! Enjoy!

I just purchased a Pro-Ject Carbon turntable with an Ortofon Red. I'm generally happy with it. But I had a random thought about the stylus upgrade. It's my understanding that the sound quality of any stylus degrades over time. I'm just wondering if some of the difference that you guys noticed was due to the new vs old stylus.
You make a great point but I do think the Ortofon Blue made all of my records sound better than I had ever heard them. There probably is something to what your saying. Going from old to new would make a difference. Great thinking. Take care.
Hello Melinda ! The Styx - The great illusion is my favourite Styx album too. I got a reprint for about 3 dollars if I do a quick Skr to $ adjustment , and it’s in pristine mint condition. If you love Hagars voice , you must’ve heard Montrose’s two first albums ? If not , check them out. You’ll love them , I kid you not. Great video. Take care. /R (A is still at work).

Wow, At Last goes for that much, I would pick that up if I found it. Beautiful classic. That’s the best Styx, so close to hitting my top 100. All killer, high school album for me. I do not know a lot about Stereo equipment so I will take your word on the red and blue. I have a friend, my once a week trainer, who is an audiophile who has been helping me upgrade. I have a NAD C 538 cd player and love it, would hate to no be able to play cds on my hifi system....going to get a better dac eventually though. I like cds for rap and metal because of the bass response.

@@MelindaMurphy i think you jinxed me because it literally stopped working today, idk if i can fix it or not prob not. I would not recommend you get that model. I think i may get a cheaper onkyo or the 300 dollar yamaha to replace it.
update: sending my cd player off to get repaired since its under warranty thru Nad so yeah.
I got to hear the Ortofon Red, Blue, Bronze, and Black at an audio club cartridge shootout. I thought the Blue was the sweet spot in terms of value, and while the Bronze and the Black provided more detail, they seemed a little harsh.
The cartridge I really liked at the shootout was the Koetsu Rosewood, which is obviously in a completely different league.
I think the Blue provides the most bang for the buck so to speak. Everyone has their personal preference of course. I have never heard a bronze or black so I have no idea what difference they would make. Thanks for your comments. 😀
Lots of neat points of contact here for me, personally. I’m Canadian but spent many, many weeks in St Augustine at my grandparents condo as a teen. Great memories. Love to get back to the Spanish Trace someday. Second, I’m so happy that RUSH is being well recognized beyond Canada. That is to say, “remembered and honored” for their contributions to the music world. Third, I just got a 2M Blue as well but it has not arrived yet. I’ll have it in hand in bout 10 days. Thank you so much for your support. St Augustine is my favorite part of Florida. The beaches and historical parts are amazing. Rush is really huge in the US. We are all sad for the loss as well. I really do think you will love your stylus upgrade. It really made a difference in the sound for me. Listen to a record you are extremely familiar with and you will immediately notice a difference. I had a blue one, I upgraded the cartridge to a Bronze wich was another improvement but be aware this one is not forgiven as the stylus is a fine line it will have a larger surface contact and if the record is dirty the noise will be present and now I own a black stylus this one uses a Shibata shape stylus created first for the quadraphonic records, The balck one has an ever surface contact of the groove wall and is even less forgiving but the music comming out of it is incredible. I heard sounds that were there before but are now clearly audible from start to end even the inner grooves are distortion free. If you opte for the Bronze or black you have to own the Bronze cartridge minimums although a specialist told me that you can use it with the red or blue but won't get the maximum out of them and have to make sure the stylus is perfectly aligned. I know the black and Bronze are more expensive but they worth it 👌.

Hi Melinda, what was your most expensive vynil purchase (boxes are very often expensive, but a single vinyl album can be too, or even more)? Apart from the recent Queen box set, mine was Gong - 2032 (2LP + CD set) for about $250,- (mint+ condition 2nd hand) Also, possibly very different from what you usually listen to, i recommend the albums by The Blue Nile. Most are now re-released on vinyl, or are going to be. It maybe takes a few listening sessions to get into their music, but it is so filled with emotion and melody, i am sure you will learn to love it. Try them, you might just like them!

I think the most I spent on a single album was $100 for a pristine Japanese press of Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin. That's just off the top of my head.
Im new to your channel, love your vids. Just a note about July. They were more psych/pop than prog, but very very good! Originals are pretty expensive, but it has been reissued! The mono reissue sounds terrific, and wont break the bank. Happy hunting!

It has been my experience on UA-cam to avoid reviews, or state an opinion, on audio equipment. I found it usually starts a poop storm. I
once congratulated someone on their new turntable and immediately got a response from someone else stating the turntable was crap, that it had cheap bearings, etc. My position is: buy what sounds good to you and ignore everyone else’s opinion. BTW, great
records in the video. Your collection must be really growing.
I enjoy reviews on stereo equipment, vinyl pressings and music itself. I always keep in mind that it is just an opinion and everyone comes from a different point of view. For the most part people have been really nice about videos such as this. I would hate to start some big storm. Lol. My videos are just for fun. Thank you so much for the kind compliment. I have the 2M Red. It's still new, but when it wears out i'll get the 2M Blue. It is pricy but sounds like it's worth it.

Beth is one of KISS best songs. First time I heard KISS was when I was made for lovin' you came out in 1979. I know Gene Simmons hates singing it, but I like it.

The 2M Red is great. Enjoy it. Once you do have the 2M Blue, you will notice the difference though. They are both fantastic. I love the whole Dynasty album. It is one of my favorites by Kiss. Too bad Gene. Lol.

Love the Rush T-shirt. Still bummed about Neil's passing, but glad I got to see Rush perform, many times. They'll always be my favorite Canadian band. Also love that Etta James album, since it's always good for weekend listening. Seeing that Styx album takes me back to being a four year-old preschooler, and how "Come Sail Away" scared me to death, when the synthesizer solo came in. The same goes for KISS, since I thought they were gonna jump out of the TV, and get me. LOL! Anyhoo, another great vid! RIP Neil.

Another cool video! Good move on the Orto 2M Blue. It's quite a jump over the Red for sure. I did the same and after awhile I wanted to try the Bronze and it as a huge leap over the Blue. So then I went for the Black and the Black was very good but, to me, was not worth the upgrade cost over the Bronze. To me - the Bronze is definitely the best of the bunch for the money. And regarding the Original Master Recordings, most are pretty good. However, Dark Side of the Moon is notoriously "blech" so be warned and don't assume they are all great. There are duds. :) Take care!

Ralf Walter I find that the Dark Side Of The Moon Mofi (original master recording) to be one of the best sounding versions I have ever heard. There are three versions of it, I have the last pressing so I can’t speak to the other ones but from others I have talked to they really liked the other versions as well. I have a first US pressing and a couple of other reissues and of those ones I find the Mofi the best sounding of the bunch.
I had a Ortofon cartridge specially designed for Dual turntable with ultra light tone arm. I never liked it and switched to Grado G1, much better. So I guess they have improved the Ortofon from what people say.
It sounds good to my ears. I'm definitely not an expert though. Lol. I'm happy with the Ortofon Blue stylus.
It's funny, I found that same Styx 'Master' in a bargain bin at a Flea Market for two dollars. It was the only one like it in the entire bin so I suspect it was just overlooked. However, the seller saw what I had in my hands and still didn't say anything. Score!

The Etta James album was worth the wait. I didn't want to spend that much money on it and finally got a decent deal on it. I am very fond of the Kiss album and one I was probably going to be looking for on discogs. It definitely made my day when it arrived on my doorstep. 🥰 Thank you!
Several years ago when I first got back into vinyl I went and got a vintage Pioneer TT. The cart was an AT120 with a bent stylus. I decided to upgrade it and bought a Dynavector 10X5 High output MC. It cost me $450.00 at the time but it's been well worth it. 3 months ago or so I bought a new TT and it came with the Ortofon red. Replaced it with the 10X5 and HOLY CRAP did the soundstage open up! The 10X5 now goes for about $750.00 but it's well worth the money. Love the shirt, Rush is far and away my favorite band and I'm still mourning Neal's passing. He was what hooked me on Rush.
I'm so sorry that he's gone too. It's probably much harder on you because Rush is your favorite band. Be glad you were able to get your equipment before the price went up. The Ortofon Red greatly improved the sound and the Blue was even better. You have some amazing stereo equipment. Enjoy.

Hi Melinda, YES! I upgraded my stylus from the 2m Red to 2m Blue a week ago and I can vouch that it’s Well worth the extra cost! I was very impressed with the Red, however it always had a “hot mic” kinda strength that showed off Every single pop and crackle, and had a certain amount of bass vibration on some of my records. Some I had stopped playing because of this! But! After the upgrade, not only are these same records and all my others Much quieter! But the overall fidelity is Twice as good! I’m still breaking mine in and I can honestly say that Now with my blue, no longer are there Any records in my collection, that I do not play. They ALL sound twice as good or better! I can enjoy my entire collection. With awe, at the sound. Heck even my digitally sourced albums sound more analog and far better. I’m glad I spent the $!
I agree with you. I noticed the difference immediately. It was a terrific purchase. 😃
45rpm's are great. They can sometimes sound better than the album version due to wider grooves and where that track is on the Lp. If it's closer to the spindle there can be more sound distortion if the platters unbalanced on a 12". 🙂

Love wolfsons records. Just recently moved away from Jacksonville, and went to that record store all the time. Not so fun in the summer with no A/C. Next time you’re in Jax, try going to tiger records in down town. It’s an amazing shop.

I switch from Shure cartridge to a Grado. It suppose to sound real good on my stereo system that I paid a big chunk of change. It sounds real good but I don't know if it sounds better. I thought the ortofon blue sounded good on my system too. They are all great and all pricey. Once you get use a certain level of cartridge and stylus.. great video, kiddo.

Using a pickering 1200 cartridge at real time.For personal reasons i like the warm sound it translates to my ears.However,i do change from time to time.For at one time i use to collect cartridges.I own over a few dozen.:)I love Styx Grand Illusion.A very put together musical arrangement.It is one of those classic rock albums that every song is worth the listen.Beside Pieces of Eight are my favorites from the band Styx.BTW,thanks for sharing your experience.I do enjoy to watch others in what i call The Glory of finding the holy grails....Peace MM!

I have the ortofon red on my project debut carbon dc turntable and may consider purchasing an ortofon blue in the near future. I've heard it as my friend Tim has one in his vpi scout turntable. My friend is a drummer who was influenced by Neil peart and when he heard 2112 in 1976 on 8 track he was blown away by the music. He told me this was on a pioneer car stereo at the time . He's 58,I wasn't born until 1978 so i don't remember when it was new. lol. I'm a guitar player that likes to play music with Tim from time to time. Music is fun!
I really enjoyed the Ortofon Red. No complaints at all about it. I do think the Ortofon Blue has improved the sound of the music on my stereo equipment. I've really been enjoying it. Peart had an influence on so many drummers. I have heard countless musicians talking about it all week. Thanks for sharing about your friend. Have a great weekend.

I am awaiting my Blue. Got sour on the red. Too much shrill high end. Do you feel the blue is more mellow? Also, thinking about Nagaoka MP-110. Yeah, I'm late to that party. Any thoughts on that cart?
I could immediately tell the difference in the sound of the Ortofon Blue. It definitely doesn't sound shrill. A lot of people say a needle has to break in but I thought this was an immediate upgrade. I hope you will be happy with yours too.
There are CD players today that have really good sounds such as Marantz. some of them even play SACD which sounds better than regular CD

I'm getting a Fluance RT85 tomorrow from amazon. It's has the Ortofon Blue cart with it, i have a fluance RT81 right now with a Audio Technica VM540ML/H cart so i will be comparing the two.

So, I had a red 2M and was reluctant to switch...fast forward and pulled the trigger on blue....once the break-in period passed, night and day difference!

Yes, Go for the BLUE for SURE ! ! ! Blue has outstanding play tones... ( I use on my travel tables & others ) The Black, and Bronze I have a few of, is all I use on my videos, but you are talking really big bucks!!!
I'm thrilled to have the Blue. It is a great fit with the rest of my stereo equipment. Maybe someday I can do more upgrades. 🤩

Good to hear that one step made such a difference! I tend to jump a few steps in hopes of future proofing. But... we all know when it comes to audio upgrades, the price of each step can go up exponentially.
I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck. Unfortunately, I do have to consider the money when making these decisions. My latest purchases, floor speakers and the Ortofon Blue, have greatly improved the quality of sound for my music.
You picked up some great stuff, Melinda. I'm looking for that Etta James album; that's a great find for sure! You know that I always appreciate autographed stuff; I read the inscription on that vinyl album, very special! That is a very nice collection of 45's; your jukebox will sound great with those singles on it. I prefer GRADO Prestige Series Cartridges. They're very affordable and sound great, but congratulations on the Ortofon Blue acquisition, a very nice Christmas gift for sure. What are my favorite parts of the video? It is your Rush T-Shirt and having the Rush Permanent Waves album displayed behind you. Permanent Waves is my favorite Rush album, mostly because of the Spirit of Radio song. Yes, it was sad to hear that Neil Peart passed away. He was definitely one of the greatest drummers of all time.

Like you, I’ve always been in the hunt for an original pressing of “At Last.” I’ve had no luck so far, but I know I’ll make it happen someday. An upgrade to an ortofon Blue has been on my radar for quite some time, I just haven’t pulled the trigger yet. What I’d REALLY like to do is to go for the bronze, but man the price 😱🤣 Great VCLT from Billy Hurst, and I know to have that album in all 3 formats must be really cool. Love those 45’s! @@MelindaMurphy so now I have 49 hours on the ortofon 2m bronze and I have to say its amazing it seems like someone took blankets off my speakers and I loved the 2m blue the bronze is a different animal entirely much more detail, bloom, actually more like a moving coil imho
Yeah, but you need another cartridge to use the bronze, right? With red and blue you are ready to do with only buying a new stylus. I have had blue once, but use red today. Will probably invest in a blue next time and see one more time, but red is a good stylus that does the job well.

I need some help with my turntable/cartridge. Newbie here: Just got a Pioneer PL71 and the headshell needed to be resoldered. Its working pretty good now but I was thinking of replacing the Stanton cartridge with a 2M Blue. Should I just replace the whole headshell too? Will it fit on my tonearm?

Nick pick up on KISS "Smashes Thrashes and Hits" I have that as a picture disc but not on regular vinyl. I've heard that KISS was planning to reunite with Ace Frehley and perform with makeup for a few shows in the late 1980s Peter Criss was not asked to participate so they had Eric Carr record "Beth" with the plan for him to perform it live.
That sounds like a good explanation for why Eric recorded Beth. The picture disc is really cool looking and I have never seen one in person. Thank you for the information. Have a great night.

That KISS album you showed was one of the first records in my collection. I got it back in 2000 just after I got my first turntable. It's a great one that I play pretty often.
It's a special one for me as well and I never ever see it. I thought I was going to have to track it down on Discogs so this was an incredible surprise.

It all depends on the Turntable you are using it on. Like when I sold TVs vcrs in the 80s. Don’t buy a great vcr only to play it on a Black and white tv.
I do think the stylus upgrade was worth while. I am enjoying better sound quality with the Ortofon Blue stylus. Thank you.

Hello Melinda. Once again you have found a treasure trove of goodies. I’m excited for you that you upgraded to THE ORTOFON BLUE. Did you receive just the stylus or the entire cartridge? Either way it’s ear candy. Received the 50th anniversary of THE STONES LET IT BLEED. If you don’t have it already,I highly recommend it. You also get the mono version along with it. Melinda Murphy I believe the 50 th Anniversary does sound better. It has a very nice presentation,plus the 180 gram vinyl is a contributing factor.
Nice T-shirt , I have almost all the Rush albums except a couple in the 90’s they want to much money for them. I played 4 Rush albums this morning. Nice haul, I agree the blue is a big step up from the red. The Ortophon bronze and black are even a noticeable difference.
I bet every upgrade is pretty amazing. I need to have more of the Rush catalogue. I have four of their albums and love them all. It's sad to lose such an incredible drummer. He was so respected and loved. Take care.
