42 gallons per barrel by the way. First time in real mountains for me, 1983 I was 19 years old, in a 72 KW 400 big cam, no jakes, loaded from Cortez to Montrose thru Delores, Rico, and Ridgway. It was a shit show for sure. Somewhere between Rico and Ridgeway I found my self sitting on the west bound shoulder looking at my truck on the east bound shoulder smoking like it was on fire (and I was probably sucking my thumb too) wondering how in the hell I would ever get out of there. Because I wasn’t planning on getting back in that truck! Fortunately, a log hauler going up stopped, sat with me awhile and gave me some instruction. He was my 2nd guardian angel that day. The first one caught me at the truck stop in Bloomfield ask me where I was going, and then told me do not to go thru Ouray with no jakes on that truck. He probably saved my life. Someone who has never experienced losing their brakes going down a mountain loaded does not know what real fear is. It was a real life lesson for me. Praise be to the Lord for looking after children and idiots.
I just retired in May of 2023, after doing 42 years as a independent OTR trucker. I've climbed every mountain. My rule of thumb was, whatever gear i used to climb the mountain, is the same gear i used to go down it, and never had any issues.
Hi Mike - I was on a mountain pass in my car last winter and it got icy with a sudden snowstorm. I remembered your tips and always carry snow chains, got us out to safety in no time while most others are stuck for the night! Thanks! Good to see your videos again!
Mike, I'm an 89-year-old female fan in Florida. SO glad you're back. 3 years ago, you got me through pneumonia once & bronchitis twice. 2 years ago, a mini-stroke. Loved blue "Betsy" and now"Black Betty". Great to be riding shotgun w/you again.
Yesterday I looked on your channel just to see if I might of missed a video. First thing this morning a video popped up on my feed... Love your new truck!!!! Thanks for sharing, always love the snow videos. Peace
Good evening right now in Michigan! Great to see another awesome video from you! Take care and be safe on the road! Saw the reports of this snow event! Now I see it! WOW!
A person can apply everyone of those tips you gave for navigating steep grades up & down to private vehicles !!! I know because my ex(now but we are still really good friends which pisses my sister off) brother-in-law taught me. I am eternally grateful for this knowledge because turning 71 in December, my reaction time isn't what it used to be and I've overheated brakes before and ended up taking a really wild ride down the east side of South Pass in Wyoming !!! I hope everyone watching your videio today utilizes this information....it could save their lives, vehicles, and extend the life of their vehicle by following them. Thanks Mike !!! I even watched to the end (it ran twice) in case I missed something :) !!! God Bless and keep the videos coming...I ALWAYS learn something or re-enforce knowledge I already had with every video !!!
My Dad gave up his cdl at 90 and he taught me to drive my truck and my load and let you drive your load and your truck. He liked move as fast as he could and to cold nose me and I like to save my truck as much as I could so I learned that when he tried to cold nose me to not watch him just relax and drive my load as safely as I could. The brakes are for emergencies, jake and gears are to keep it as slow as needed and use the brakes only in emergencies.
Hey Brotherman, When I'm Home Relaxing with the Fireplace Going, I Play Some Music and Watch Your Winter Videos to Remind Myself of What Lays Ahead of Me When I Hit the Road. We'll Done and Keep Them Videos Comin! 👍
The only time I ever smoked my brakes was way back in the beginning of my career (25 years ago) was when I used the "light, steady pressure" method of keeping my foot on the brakes. I switched to the "stab" method, and have never smoked them since.
I used to enjoy my drives over that hill... I was usually pulling a flatbed or stepdeck, five axles... Loaded I would go up and down 35 to 40 mph when loaded... I was a resident of East Carbon, so you likely know that place, and the proximity to where you are at... Thank you for doing this correctly, as that hill is deadly for the foolish... My last time on that road was during the fire, I used Emma Park to 191 south to detour that fire...
This video reminds me of videos of Red Mountain Pass, Colorado. There in the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado. At least there's guardrails here!
I was extremely surprised when he passed you, but tail-gating you on the way up what's he gonna do push? my opinion not cool to pass going up-hill. I was taught to go down the hill in the same gear you went up the hill in, and to use your jakes in keeping your speed down, riding the brakes while going down with proper gear and jake-brake use doesn't seem extreme to me, would always know I was on the grapevine by the smell of brakes.😁
So I love this channel and missed you when you were gone but I don't understand your trips. You are carrying oil but from where to where? I apologize if this is a stupid question. You don't go out on the interstate anymore. Right?
Hey Mike !!! Does the trailers have MTN BRAKE SHOES on them as the shoes & drums are wider then standard shoes & drums & does your "KW"" have drum or disc brakes ?? GOOD advise about using up your braking power as DON'T want to run down the mts like that ROOKIE did with the flatbed going into Denver & ran over those cars & killed people !! 🤔🙄👍👍👍👍👍
Wondering if you are missing Vail Pass. From what I was seeing it was a mess from there all the way to Limon east of Denver with the gates closed and people were told to stay home.
--some commenters saying this is Duchesne UT to Helper Ut ... why so many other oil trucks, I don't see a Utah refinery nearby but you sure passed a lot of tanker yankers/ trucks going the other way.
There isn't a refinery nearby yet. It all gets loaded in rail cars in Price to be shipped out. But all this oil will soon be going to a refinery currently being built on I-70 about 10mi west of the CO state line.
You must be wore out brother, Video looping and everything, back in the day I got that training how to use the transmission on the mountains, wit a driver off the cb radio, He was pulling a set of tribes up on Tehachapi in California, I had à petty good radio at the time me and another driver was chatting i was telling him every time i come off this mountain my brakes smoking , driver wit the tribles holla said where u at, I told em, he said get on up I'm trying to make a long story short, but that's how i learned to come off mountains using the transmission, we didn't have Jake's at the time, I believe the retarter had just started coming out,,But anyways appreciate your videos Mike bring back memories, ✌️
Back in the late 60s before I went on the big road I was a cab driver in Hartford, Ct. Every now and then I'd get a fare going to Jacob's Mfg. or a pickup there. One of them told me they made engine brakes but that meant little to me. I hauled meat out of the Omaha area for awhile and came off Eagle mountain more than once and smoked out the scale house below. One time in particular they sent me off with new shoes on scored drums... good times :) I did eventually drive a nice truck or two with engine brakes... somehow it felt like cheating. Imagine today with auto transmissions and Jake brakes deciding what gear was needed !!! What's next Microwaves and Fridges?
His ability to pass you in those circumstances is probably very minimal, and he’s on your bumper to minimize his time in that passing lane when the time is right. I’m not a trucker, but that’s plain physics.
Where you are wrong! Better to back off so there is time to gain speed for the pass. I'd have gone with he was drafting Mike but not much gain at those speeds.
Ohhh Ohhhh Black Betty, climbin a mountain, ohhh ohhhh ahole trucker, riding my tail end. Ohhh ohhhh, putting my gear in, ohhh ohhhh jaking down the mountain.
I enjoy tracking you on Google Maps but it's a challenge to figure out where you are. Maybe you could mention your location and direction at the beginning of the videos. Or not. Peace, Bam-ba-lam!
Of course you're wrong.. in every action film I see they take corners at full speed with their inside wheels off the ground,,, They must be right yeah? .. . Joking aside love your vids keep them coming...
So glad to see your vids again, love them, love the new truck, thank you for still trucking and shooting vids for us.
I agree. I enjoy your videos Mike.
Agreed! It was great to see Mountain Man Mike in action again with the new rig! Oh, and an oilfield barrel is 42 gallons, not 44 gallons.
So good to see you back mmm. Love the scenery 😊

My wife and I have been over this pass a few times, but only in the early fall..beautiful country.
How I wish I were hitchhiking,
Riding along in the passenger seat,
Headin' down to Los Angeles...
Well, I almost agree. Anywhere but LA!

I was taught stab, but my school was in Nebraska. I brake lightly over Donner with 3 Jakes. Good video
No buddy passes Black Betty and gets away with it. Her hood is looking shinny! Great video! Peace

I made a search, and it said that this is indian canyon in Utah. 47 miles route, but there is a steep section over 10 mile stretch.

Good job buddy. THANKS
Pricks behind the steering wheel of big trucks these days are becoming way to common. I run into them daily anymore
Would love to see a dashboard cam view of the gauges.
Good morning. Looks balmy.
No Volvo stressing out that KW
Amazing new truck! What's the ornament on the hood? Love your channel and I'm glad you're back.
Good Job
When did we start creeping down a mountain, I'm used to full throttle.

Lovin' Black Betty!!❤ cut out Steve Sommer Overnight Drive to ride.
Thanks for posting. Did I miss it -- Indian where? What state?
I saw a sign that said Ashley National Forest and that's out of Vernal Utah
Indian Canyon, Utah.
Between Duschene and Helper
MTN MAN MIKE: Will you consider going live... Winter conditions are your training grown. Black Betty can handle anything.

Why are all the pickups parked one the side of the road? Are they hunting?
What happened with your last trucking job and what are you driving and engine and transmission
Wondering if you are missing Vail Pass. From what I was seeing it was a mess from there all the way to Limon east of Denver with the gates closed and people were told to stay home.
The emission engines have exceptional engine brakes. My old 12.7 Detroit, not so much. I have everyone blowing by me on big downgrades.

Mountain bike how many tires are on combined on that whole rig can’t really see trailer wheels my brothers arguing with me

I saw a sign Ashley National Forest. It's out of Vernal Utah
Utah statel highway 191 between Helper and Duchesne Utah
@@dalewells4961 Thanks.
If it's a 12513 speed then grab granny low overdrive and take em. But be careful don't stay there long. Oil in trans doesn't circulate properly.
What kind of truck is Black Betty?❤
Hi mike hi black betty 🚚
How does oxygen (air) cause the brakes to get hotter?
Maybe he meant they don't catch fire as easy without the oxygen.
Making that engine earn is keep.
A beautiful day in the 'hood. Hey, how about that election, Mike!!!
Where “Indian pass”. Must be around a big oil patch Alberta or BC?
