  • Over the years, Norfolk Southern has slowly began to deplete its fleet of former Southern "High Hood" GP38-2 locomotives. these engines sport a high, short hood, and are set up for long hood operation with the "F" placard on the long hood end. These units also feature manual-valve airhorns on either end of the locomotive, sometimes different types on each, and a distinct long hood mounted bell. Between replacing the high short hoods with new "admiral" style cabs, or just flat out retiring/selling off a large portion of the fleet, the GP38-2 high hood is a dying breed. However, Conrail Shared Assets territory is home to a select few. Although mostly assigned to yard service, local WPCA-51 has always been a train where it wasn't uncommon to see a pair of these locomotives being used for power. But alas, even on this train has it become quite rare to catch a pair for power these days. On 9/20, I managed to do a mini chase of the 51 between Barrington and Somerdale, with High Hood GP38-2's 5235 and 5019. The 5235 sports what I believe to be a mixed cast P5A horn on the short hood.
