  • With the popularity of installing lithium batteries in RV's, boats and in off-grid systems we thought it about time to highlight the pros and cons of this technology. Plus in the first of a two-part series, we put a Victron Energy lithium SuperPack battery through some extreme testing in freezing and hot conditions to see if the BMS works.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:29 🚀 Lithium batteries, especially Victron Energy's Lithium-iron-phosphate chemistry, offer numerous advantages over lead-acid batteries, including higher energy density, deeper discharge, and faster charging.
02:48 🔋 Lithium batteries have a longer lifetime with many more charge cycles compared to lead-acid batteries, making them a cost-effective choice in the long run.
03:47 ❄️ Lithium batteries can operate in colder conditions, but they should be charged and stored in controlled temperatures for optimal performance.
04:46 💰 Despite the higher initial cost, lithium batteries can be more cost-effective than lead-acid batteries when considering the cost per cycle and other benefits, such as reduced maintenance.
05:42 🔌 Victron Energy's SuperPack batteries, designed as direct lead-acid replacements, have internal BMS (Battery Management System) and can handle various temperature extremes and voltage conditions.

The reason I went with Victron Energy products was because of their well made UA-cam videos.
Been a year since I bought the Smartsolar Charger and even though it was a bit pricey, it definitely has made a satisfied customer and I been doing some tests of my own and now looking into buying some of their batteries as soon as I save up some money.

Interesting video! Good to know it still gives power by -20! I have now a 100ah AGM as camper battery. But my system is build lithium ready with Victron gear.
And my plan is to upgrade to lithium but not sure if I go for the high-end victron solution or the affordable mid range lithium batteries.
It is awesome to have Bluetooth control on a 1965 Unimog 404 😁 Im looking forward to talk to you on Expo's!

    Hi gays,
nice to hear more from the SuperPack. I use two 100 Ah Lithium SuperPack "high current" with one MultiPlus 12/3000/120-16, SmartShunt 500A and Cerbo GX in my motorhome. Now I have enough power for my oven and espresso machine.

Why is it that you cannot put your batteries in series/parallel? Battleborn has an internal BMS and I can do it with those lithium batteries?

I always tell my customers Lithium batteries are like people. If they are too cold or too hot they don't work well under pressure. Keep them in a comfortable temperature range.

I bought a 100Ah Superpack back in March 2019, I wasn't aware that the internal BMS had a low temperature disconnect feature on it when I bought it so I have disconnected it through the winter months to avoid charging it when the temperatures are low (there was no mention of it in the literature, indeed your current webpage for the superpack quotes "The internal switch will disconnect the battery in case of over discharge, over charge or high temperature." No mention of Low Temperature) am I right in thinking my 2019 superpack will have the same capabilities as you are saying the superpacks have in 2021 (or now 2022) and that I can leave the battery connected to my Campervan charging system all year round with no danger of damage?

    Hi Victron : ))
can I ask few question ???
how do you have set up communication between BMSs (withs is folded from 3.2V cells battery packs) GX&&Multi II ???
It is communicate via their CAN bus, or via RS485, or do I not communicate via this protocols and it is comunicate only via smartShunt communicates ???
It would be quite nice if GX could cooperate with a BMSs communicating via CAN bus, without SmartShunt... Did you have some experience with that ???? :P
Because if it is communicate only via SmartShunt the GX && Multi it will not have info. about errors from the BMS, OK BMS shutDown the battery, but you dont have info. from the first sight... and you must check via bluethoot connection on the BMSs or from another way...
This is not bug ? This is a future ? :P

Is there a reason your batteries performed at such extremely low temperatures and did not have cell damage? Or is this likely typical of well built LiFePo4's?

Can they be used in vehicle conversions? That is when replacing a diesel engine with a electric motor. Providing for the opportunity to use solar from the roof of the vehicle in addition to the normal plug in charging.

I have a pair of Victron 12-230 AgM super cycle batts that are 2 years old, very lightly used. Can I put another identical new pair in series without detriment so I can get up to 24v 460A?

    • @VictronEnergyBV

I have a much cheaper LoFePO4 battery. The manufacturer couldn’t figure out how to make the BMS have a separate charge and discharge low temperature cutoff, so it will let you attempt to charge it below freezing, which will destroy it.
Some of the manufacturers use grade B cells, or use used cells.
Do you feel like being the BMS for your battery? I decided to take that risk, but it’s definitely a risk.
I am enthusiastically waiting 6 months for my budget to let me get a Victron MultiPlus. I currently have to unplug my charger to use my microwave, which gets old quick. I haven’t found any other inverter / charger that has the same set of features.
