    Dr. Bradley, I'm sure you're correct concerning the poor results of testing this cloth with operating radio receivers. I'd like to report on my results, anyway. I found that AM and FM radio reception was not blocked using up to seven layers of the cloth. Perhaps I have very good radios. Cell phone reception WAS blocked, however, with a single layer. Since I'll be using the cloth to protect an electronic rifle optic that is unpowered, I believe that some cloth will be better than none in an EMP event.
    For those curious, I was able to get continuity with a DVM up to 3 cm across both x and y axes, and through 4 folded layers of the cloth. I have no idea if that's significant.
    Good video, and fast delivery on the product. Thanks.

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  6 років тому

      Thanks for your report on this. I'm surprised by the AM/FM blocking, but it would obviously depend on signal strength. As your DVM showed, the cloth is conductive at the surface due to the stainless fibers. That is usually preferable because it makes it easier to ground.

    This being 6 plus years old now ... has there been any improvements to the materials and when wrapping, something like a car or ATV or Motorcycle... do you need to go under it to encapsulate it or would it be ok if All edges make contact with the ground ... and would the floor material make a difference... say , concrete vs plywood floor

    Thanks for the video. Would you mind sharing with us how one could build a faraday cage for a small portable generator? Say with hardware cloth or aluminum screen? Thanks very much.

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 років тому +4

      You could really do either, depending on the size of the generator. A small generator might fit into an aluminum foil-wrapped box -- easy and cheap, but a bit of a pain to take in and out. You could also create something using more durable, such as a large tool chest, or something like that. You just have to pay attention to the seams, which tend to leak RF energy. Many people do opt to use conductive cloth, mainly because it's so easy to use, basically just wrapping up the item, or even setting the item on a concrete floor and draping the cloth over it.

    • @Ahnleshak
      @Ahnleshak 5 років тому

      @@disasterprepper Dr. Bradley: Why couldn't I wrap the outside of a large cardboard box with foil (edges sealed with aluminum tape) and leave one end open to easily set over top of my inverter generator box? The leading/open edge touches the concrete for ground just as good as the cloth does, doesn't it? And I have a complete metal faraday covering over the generator (in its cardboard box) rather than the sparse stainless steel fibers. Bulk rolls of wide aluminum foil from Sam's, etc. are cheaper than the 10-12 sections of cloth I would need, plus the sewing costs. Or am I missing something?

    Just wondering, in this day and age with WiFi and mobile transmission towers, we have an unresolved question as in how those radio frequencies affect the human body long term.
    A bit like Hiroshima, no cancers in survivors until twenty years later.
    Could a cloth like this be beneficial as a faraday cage, come mosquito net on a four poster bed ?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  5 років тому

      Yes, folks have done a mosquito netting sort of thing over their beds using conductive cloth. Personally, I think a more translucent cloth would be better for that application. If you search the web, you'll find several types for that purpose.

    Hi , thanks for the show.
    Im building a house and I am looking at shielding signals from 5mhz up to 5ghz. Would the cloth work or would I be best to use tar foil building paper in the construction.
    My concern is local wireless devices other than cell phones become ghosts on a spectrum analyser out side of the building.
    Thanks

    Thank you! Your tests are by far the most useful on the internet, but I've got some concern about the durability of the shielding. How much energy would these conductors need to handle? Since these are not fully-enclosed like a Faraday Cage, they're relying on the ability to shunt induced current to ground, right? Couldn't the cloth, copper screen, aluminum foil, etc. just burn-through?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 років тому

      If you run the numbers, there is almost zero heating of conductors due to an EMP. I talk about this in the Reluctant Prepper's myths interview. It's a good question though.

    Will an emp affect your car/electric equipment if it is not turned on or plugged in or connected to a battery or just not running?
    Also I have a military rugged 3000va UPS it is a deployable one in a green rugged brand hard plastic 4 shelf container. 2700 watts pure sine wave inverter designed for 220/240 can be used any where in the world.
    I have 2 ?s
    1) would you know if this casing is emp proof or is the equipment emp proof?
    2) how can i turn this into a solar generator to use in a grid down situation.
    Thanks for all your hard work and info God Bless You!

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  6 років тому

      Yes, an EMP can affect equipment (including cars) that are not turned on or plugged in, although having them off and/or unplugged can greatly help. I'm not familiar with the UPS that you mention, but I would suspect that it is susceptible. The casing, if plastic, does not provide any shielding. As for a solar generation system, you need panels, a charge controller, and a battery system. The UPS likely may have a usable battery, but you'd have to mate it up to the rest of the system (assuming the voltages matched).

    If I wanted to make a bag to slip over the entire solar panel kit (manufacture packaging), would I: sew it on long side to make a tube, then tape the ends shut with duct tape, burrito style?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 років тому

      You could do something like that. Or you could make a pillow case type bag and fold down the ends, either sealing with velcro or conductive tape.

      I tested one of their duffels in a previous video. It did very well, and the product seemed of high quality. The cloth is just kind of expensive for large items. Also, I'm not sure how well it would sew together when making large covers. I think they may offer large covers now though, so perhaps it works fine when sewn.

    Do you have any advice for someone trying to protect their body from microwaves in other words of Faraday cage or some kind of a protection for the whole body when sleeping at night?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  6 років тому

      There are sheer conductive cloths that can be draped over you like a canopy, or even sewn to a blanket. They're not cheap though (several hundred dollars for the material). Also, some folks put a layer under their sheet (or even between the box springs and mattress) to help reduce energy coming in from below. Some people also buy conductive clothing (shirts and hats mostly) to help with susceptibility to EMI.

    Would a gun safe work as faraday cage? What about the effect of plug in for golden rod dehumidifier ?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 років тому

      I tested a fire safe for my EMP book, and it did fairly well. The specifics are in a table comparing different ad hoc Faraday cages. Is the dehumidifier inside the safe? If so, how is power routed out? If it routes out of the safe, it will affect the shielding effectiveness. At a minimum, you might consider adding a ferrite to the power cord. See disasterpreparer.com/emp-ferrites.

    • @stevenrhagerman
      @stevenrhagerman 7 років тому

      disasterprepper thanks , the power is prewired to the back of safe with an typical outlet inside so probably not the best. I have seen large all steel cabinets out of metal much thicker than trash cans with a door that overlaps the frame with a locking mechanism like a semi trailer. I was thinking about that for larger items after lining the interior with a non conducive material. In our area there sold a Fleet farm once or twice a year at a large discount
      . Thanks again for all you videos. I have all your books I think, have read the first 3 of the novels.

    I have a whole house generator that i am planning on installing. It's an older generac with a steel housing. I am planning on using an outlet on the side of my house so it can be unplugged from the grid. Do you have any suggestions on protecting it from EMP or is the housing sufficient?

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  7 років тому

      The generator's housing will certainly help. Also, unplugging it from the grid is very important. I'm not sure that much else would be warranted if it is unplugged. I don't think covering it with cloth when outdoors makes sense.

    Question,
    I'm working out if town I am staying in a 5th wheel camper. The bedroom is in the front and it has a slide out at the head of the bed. I noticed the campsite has a WiFi antenna right outside the camper on the bedroom side. It's just a little higher than the camper roof but within 20 feet of the camper. Can you slow down the signal strength of the Wi-Fi antenna coming into the bedroom by using Faraday cloth or aluminum foil on the walls inside the camper at the bedroom location? (Not all the walks, just the ones where the slide out is, the place where your head would be when sleeping, In other words it wouldn't be a full Faraday cage it would be more like a blocking curtain on one side. Does the wifi signal mimic a radiation source? Can you be shaded from the strongest part of the signal?
    That may not be an easy question to answer given my explanation. 😊

    • @disasterprepper
      @disasterprepper  4 роки тому

      Putting up a single-sided conductive barrier close to you would reduce the RF levels you're exposed to, but it's hard to say how much. Perhaps reducing them by 50% is my guess. A better option might be to buy a conductive netting that you could hand down over your bed, or even a conductive sheet that you could cover up with.

      You can find various kinds of conductive cloth that can be worn. Most are made with silver threads, and they do a fine job of shielding. They don't hold up in the wash that well though. No need to ground the cloth when wearing it.
