Yes even in Bangkok I have never felt threatened at any time of day or night. But then again I don't hang in the walking street type locations nor wear flashy jewelry as you said😉 I would say the only really unsafe deal in Thailand is the roads especially after 10pm or if you wake really early to exercise etc. Too many drunks driving even more than other times of day. 😀Lastly your 100% correct about safety & your responsible for yourself walking over hazards (open trenches etc) watching what is going on etc.... open eyes open ears 😉 Thanks I always enjoy watching your journey although makes me home sick for Chiang Mai

I have never been. But, leaving in October with a one year Ed visa. I am widowed and from the Caribbean, but Thailand is like a dream for me. So ready to visit and see if I could retire there. So far from my kids! Lol. Maybe that is a good thing, thought!? Hahahah
      Best wishes to you!

Good to know it still feels safe over there! I've always been more leary of the western backpackers than the local folks! haha

On my first holiday to Thailand - Phuket as many do! - got some sensible advice from a long-term expat - simple, don't get involved in someone else's fight, keep clear of drugs and offers of drugs (setups).
Returned fulltime to work here in 2009 and now in our third long-term location, way out east. In those almost 15 years I've had two instances where I could have been in trouble, just coincidence but both involved Muay Thai and drunks.
First I 'rescued' a drunk Englishman I vaguely knew who was aggressively disputing the entrance fee with a group of Thai men - looking back I should have left him to it as a hiding may have knocked some sense into him, and I was at risk intervening.
Second I was in the company of an Irish guy at a rural temple event featuring Muay Thai, he got a warning that locals were out to get him as payback for him standing up to someone over an irrelevant incident earlier, and me by association as his 'friend' - made the decision to leave quietly.
    So that's it. Disappointing!
We moved to our current town in 2011 and first night there had a visit from two local police, the 'welcoming committee' giving directions to the local police station and their phone number, a reminder to wear a motorbike helmet, and a statement that I'll always remember - "we sleep well in [our town]" ie no tolerance.
    Good neighbours, good people.
By comparison I went to 'safe' New Zealand Feb-Mar this year - what a horrific contrast, dreadful crime, wouldn't go back.

Personal experience. Never had any real problems in Thailand, but that said there is more road rage here than there used to be 10-15 years ago. Other experiences in my 30 years in Asia. My house was broken into while I was away on an international trip when I lived in Singapore… l we thought it was the condo staff but never got anywhere with the police. I had an armed guard outside my house during nights in Malaysia some of the time I lived there… there was a gang of armed men breaking into homes at night in my area for several months. A friend of mine was also assaulted and mugged outside a bar in KL. And who can forget the heavily armed security and metal detectors walking into any hotel in the Philippines? I would never expect something like these experiences in Thailand, especially Chiang Mai.

Great insight as usual. One thing i noticed was a seemingly high rate of violent crime between the Thai people themselves. And Thai TV seems to cover those incidences a lot.

Even with a “safety last” mentality in Thailand, Thailand is a 100% safer than navigating the crime and homelessness in Los Angeles.

Your points are well taken, but...I watch several English-language Thai news vloggers. A Thai serial killer (nicknamed "Cyanide Sara") was arrested a few weeks ago! 🥺People are people, and people worldwide do people stuff. (i.e., commit murders.) Thailand has cops, prosecutors, judges, jails and prisons for a good reason--it needs them! 😢

I regard myself as a sensible guy but living here for two years i have learned that under no circumstances argue or upset a Thai it will escalate very quickly losing face is a no no for a, Thai i have been chased and threatened for just tooting my horn
Forever reading about Thai murdering each other over the simplest of reasons on a,weekly basis the murder rate has made me feel uneasy at tines
I live in Issan and am very wary of my surrounding as a ,foreigner

Me reading from South-Eastern Europe: "A dangerous place...?" 👀👀👀
Why don't we just follow the first precaution, innit!!

I'm surprised Myanmar is 3rd. Usually in oppressive regimes there is less crime due to the lack of legal rights. When Baby Doc was in power, Haiti was the safest place in the Caribbean. That all changed when he ran away.

Yep, I've been thinking of moving out of the USA as I reach retirement age. I traveled to Merida Mexico on an exploration trip. I think the media in the USA tends to over exaggerate and be critical of other countries.
I loved Merida. Realize it is one of the safest cities in the Americas, but I met several Mexican citizens and as long as you were respectful and courteous, they reciprocated.
I am thinking of exploring Thailand as a potential landing point for retirement (hence my subscribing to this UA-cam channel).
I'm glad to see someone actually living there speaking openly about the conditions and challenges.
I haven't seriously considered Portugal. I may have to look into that.

Why Malaysia no 1.. why not Thailand or Myanmar ? You kidding me 😂 You know has been many decade the Thai government has been asking Malaysia for help to quell the rebellion in southern Thailand and the fake statistic still said Malaysia is the highest crime rate 😂 in Myanmar they kill Rohingya ethnic and Japanese reporter but the fake statistic still said Makaysia the highest crime rate in southeast asia 😂 Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and other religion can live together witout any issue in Malaysia.. Look at the legit data from Global Peace Index Malaysia rank 18 most peaceful in the world, better than UK, USA and some of European countries
