Home run mate! Love your video. So oak is the way to go. Makes sense to me. I'll bet that's going to feel great when you see your cabin roofed with shingles that you made yourself! You taught me a lot ! Thank you.
Do what you love and dont worry about the rest ! Right !? Right !!

Cheers Daniel. Makes a tricky sounding thing look quite fun. Definitely seems doable, even if you're not lucky enough to be 3rd generation shingler!
Must also be incredibly satisfying to say you made the roof itself that is keeping the rain off you and your guest.

yes, making the shingles is half the fun and its a great way to really understand how certain woods split and change once they start to dry. Next time I might choose a softer wood wit ha straighter grain!

Try and get nice straight grain. We spent three days pushing through knotty wood. if you have straight grain you should be able to split to around 10 - 20 mil. Good luck Eskimo.

Cool, use your froe to half those shingles and you get twice as many for the effort!

Hey dobbie, Am trying to make shingles for a mobile pig arch from horse chestnut which from today's progress is very hard as the grain doesn't run that straight. Nice vid.

yes, you want nice long tiles but the longer the tile the more bend and knots. Chestnut is a good one to use. Straight grain will save you days of work!

We've got Bodark (Osage Orange) 'round here. Given its rot resistance I wonder if it would make good shingles (if you can find some straight enough.).

WE have a NEW method for splitting .. Find a long hard wood wedge. when the free gets stuck in the middle of the slip ( which happens a lot ) place the wedge in the gap and hammer the wedge down. this should split the tile and saves you having to lever the froe causing cuts to the hands ... Ie. No need to tap the frog on the tip a second time. just use wedge . much easier and safer !!!

Nice! and just a quick heads up, Hyezmar is allowing visitiors to his website to get his woodworking plans for free, before he publishes them for sale.

Is that red or white oak? Is it the same kind we have in America? Do you have to pre drill holes for the nails? Thanks

This is almost painful to watch you do without a draw knife and a bodgers bench... It would speed up the process and improve the final product. Tapering is easier and the layers fit together better.

Why did you use a maul to split the log when your Froe would be more accurate? You quartered the log and remove the sapwood because you say it's more prone to rot, but then don't split radially, why?You get better shingles if you split radially as when a log dries out it splits from the centre towards the edges, so as your shingles dry they're going to distort and split, you might as well just leave the sapwood on if you're going to split like that as you'd get more out of the log. Also, why are you making them almost an inch thick if you've got decent oak that isn't twisted?Chestnut would be cheaper and lighter, plus you'd be supporting coppiced woodlands.

Thank you very much (Tudah Rbah, in Hebrew). I decided I want no pharmacea in my house, as the Creator told me to get out of babel and I have been doing that since 2010, when filled with the Spirit of the Creator. Again, Tudah Rbah. I write books about the Creator and give them out. The real Name of the Creator is Hayah (ancient version). When Moses/Mose asked Who does he tell the YSHRALites it was Who sent him, the Creator said, Hayah asher Hayah. Translators tell us that means I am that I am. But no, it is His Name Hayah sandwiching the word asher. Asher means blessed, the straight path. After Lea had another son, she called his name Asher because, she said, people will say I am blessed. Halaluyah means in Hebrew, highest praise to Yah. I am a Cherokee, which is the world's name for us. But again, no. We called ourselves, in ancient days, GNY YN U Yah, meaning I am a vine of Yah. Do the 7 appointed times, as these are called MUGhDY, which means My Witness, so these are the Witness times of the Creator. They are written of in Leviticus 23. Do them yearly, but no more animal sacrifices. The Jews?Yahudim kept the right time, not the gregorian clander. Instead of 2017, it is really 6016, 11th month. Michael Rood is an excellent time keeper of Yah. Yah is a short version of His Name. The modern version of His Name is Yahuah, as the Southern Kingdom hid the Name when they were in Babylonian exile. I find truth by asking the Creator to show it to me. The internet is full of wolves telling lies of mankind's history. So ask the Creator to fill you with His Spirit. Shalom U ahabah (peace and love), from our home to yours.
